The uniform worn by the U.S. Army during World War One was fairly modern and the result of practical experience, field trials, and advances in technology. In 1910 a new uniform and equipment was introduced with several characteristics inspired by the European powers of the same period. While most countries still incorporated traditional system of leather straps with buckles for supporting individual items of equipment, the U.S. Army adopted an all canvas set of belts and carriers that primarily attached with a system of hooks and grommets with adjustment made by buckles on the supporting straps. When deployed to Europe various French and British items designed for front lines were considered for American use. The British Brodie steel helmet and small box respirator gas mask were eventually adopted on a massive scale with only minor variations.

Though there are many origin stories for the World War One soldiers nickname of Doughboy there is one with strong historic support. Likely, the name attached early to the Americans from U.S. military operations on the Mexican border in 1916 when Pershings Expeditionary Force traveled south of the border to fight rebel Pancho Villa. Observers noticed U.S. infantry forces were constantly covered with chalky dust from marching through the dry terrain of northern Mexico giving the men the appearance of the mud bricks of the area known as adobe with adobe transformed to dobies and then further into doughboy. Within a few months, these dobies, or Doughboys, were redeployed to Europe. Another popular explanation is that the usage of the term in World War I originated from the millions of doughnuts that were distributed to the soldiers by the Salvation Army women, known as Doughnut Lassies. These doughnuts were freshly made at refreshment huts and field hospitals, becoming a welcomed taste of home and helping to boost soldiers morale.

The Great War marked the first time in history the United States sent soldiers abroad to defend foreign soil. The French ecstatically welcomed the first wave of soldiers. Vive lAme?rique! came the shouts at the edge of a Boulogne pier as Pershing steamed into port. In an emotional arrival ceremony at the Marquis de Lafayettes tomb, Col. Charles E. Stanton declared to the crowd, Lafayette, we are here! suggesting Americans had come to repay an old debt to the French dating back to when the colonies stood virtually alone in the American Revolution. The war weary French civilians were curious to meet Uncle Sams soldiers greeting them as they marched through the villages toward the front. This set is based on a famous U.S. Army Signal Corps photograph of an old French couple welcoming a couple of Doughboys in their village in 1918.
