Prussia was renowned for its excellent infantry under Frederick the Great. Less well known is the efficacy of Prussian cavalry on the European battlefield in the 19th Century. Early in the Napoleonic wars, Bonaparte himself warned his generals of the excellent Prussian cavalry.

The well-trained and disciplined Prussian horse during the Hundred Days campaign formed regiments of cuirassiers, dragoons, hussars and lancers. By Waterloo there were eight dragoon units in the field, comprising 9% of the cavalry under Blu¨chers control.

Alongside the cuirassiers, the dragoons were the heavy cavalry of the Prussian army. Their uniform was business-like a distinctive blue Litewka long coat and grey overalls topped with a basic shako, frequently covered in an oilskin wrap. Armed with a curved sabre in an iron scabbard, dragoons were unusual among Prussian cavalry in the Hundred Days campaign in that they carried cavalry guidons into battles.

Renowned for its excellent infantry under Frederick the Great, Prussia also fielded highly effective Prussian cavalry on 19th century European battlefields.

Formed in 1813, the Landwehr Cavalry was a huge force of mounted trained militia, similar in form to their infantry counterparts. The force was a massive asset to the Prussian war machine as they totalled over thirty regiments by the Hundred Days Campaign.

The Landwehr cavalry wore dark blue Litewka long coat with collars and cuffs in provincial colours. Headgear was a mix of traditional feldmutze cap and shakos often in oilskin and with a white cross painted on. Lance pennons could vary and often reflected the uniform trim halved with white, but by the time of Waterloo all Landwehr cavalry had swapped to the standard black and white pennons.

The lance-armed Landwehr cavalry fought well on the field, comprising some 40% of Blu¨chers cavalry at Waterloo a great excuse to field lots of these brave sons of Prussia on the tabletop!

The well-trained and disciplined Prussian horse during the Hundred Days campaign formed regiments of cuirassiers, dragoons, hussars and lancers on the whole with the lighter cavalry intended for raiding and skirmishing, but in reality took their place in the main battle lines during set piece battles.

The Uhlans, or lancers, of the Prussian army fulfilled the role of both skirmishing light cavalry and line shock troops alongside the dragoon and cuirassier units. Equipped with a lethal 9-foot lance, they were an imposing sight. It was the Uhlans who saved Marshall Blu¨cher when unhorsed at Ligny.

Late war Uhlans principally wore simple dark blue uniforms and practical equipment. By the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, all units had their lance pennants with black and white swallow tail pattern.

In many civil wars in history, both sides were equipped in a very similar fashion with the colour of their uniforms and the flags they fought under being the identifying features. This was no different for the forces of the Union and the Confederacy in the American Civil War, and these miniatures, presenting their arms at firing line, are equally suited to be painted as either a Union or Confederate regiment.

Wearing dark blue tunics, light blue trousers and armed with percussion rifles, the Union soldiers learnt how to manoeuvre and march great distances to take the war to the south. Early regiments were of mixed quality with few having drilled before, let alone seen active service of any note. By the wars end they were a tough and efficient fighting body of men, a match for their adversary, Johnny Reb.

Confederate regiments were tough, with many in their ranks used to privation and familiar with firearms. This was just as well, as compared to their northern foes in the Union they were frequently poorly equipped, fed and armed - much of their equipment was taken from Federal prisoners or privately purchased. The better maintained troops favoured the Enfield muzzle-loading rifles if available, but many types of rifles were used during the war, even old flintlocks in reserve units. Ragtag they may look, but southern troops had a spring in their step and were renowned for their quick and terrifying charges, many emitting the unearthly, ululating Rebel Yell to unnerve their blue belly opponents.

The 3rd Battalion of Detachments, struck from all official records, exemplified Brigadier General Alan Campbells view, "I have collected several detachments of recovered men belonging to Sir J. Moores army, whom I found scattered in all directions, without necessaries, and some of them committing every possible excess that could render the name of a British soldier odious to the nation." During the Douro campaign and capture of the city of Oporto in 1809, the 3rd Battalion had its first taste of action near the village of Grijo. There they crossed bayonets with the infamous French regiment, les Bouchers (the Butchers). The bloody encounter was also notable for the savage dog fight between Duchess, the 3rds bull terrier mascot, and the French poodle, Fifi, both animals leaving their mark.

These exceptional miniatures are oozing character and cast in finest Warlord Resin are a must for any self-respecting (and those not quite so self-respecting) Napoleonic British wargamer.

There were few battles that did not feature artillery of some kind, and any General would have been very happy to have the support of medium or light guns. The guns were on the whole bravely and well served by both sides, inflicting losses at long range with bounding iron cannon balls, and using case shot - a tin of tightly-packed musket balls - at close range.
This box can be assembled and painted to represent Continental gunners, including the famous Molly Pitcher (below), or their opposite numbers, the Royal Artillery.

The British army in America was tiny, so much of the defence was traditionally performed by the Militias. These were civilian bodies, locally manned and equipped with state muskets.
Their performance varied greatly, some behaving very well on the field whilst others deserted or broke and ran when under pressure. What they did do was add manpower to both armies. Militias fought for the American side, but thousands also fought as Loyalists for the Crown Forces.
