Chester William Nimitz entered the Naval Academy in 1905 and was an excellent student, graduating with distinction. Afterwards he joined the USS Ohio and sailed her to the Far East - his first but certainly not his last engagement with the region. The passing years saw Nimitz further his knowledge and influence through numerous assignments and promotions. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt chose Nimitz to take command over 28 more senior flag officers. FDR ordered Nimitz to, "get the hell out to Pearl Harbor and dont come back until the war is won." At the height of the Pacific War, Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz commanded more than two million men and women, 5,000 ships and 20,000 planes.

On 6 April 1814, Napoleon Bonaparte abdicated his throne. After some 15 years of armed conflict, the Emperor of France - and conquerer of a large portion of Europe - was exiled to the tiny island of Elba. He spent only 9 months and 21 days there. With the aid of a meager partisan fleet of seven ships and 1,000 men, Napoleon escaped his island prison on 26 February 1815. He landed again on French soil to a warm reception. The royalist nobility had resumed their mistreatment of the proletariat in general and the veterans of the Grande Armée in particular. These were a few of the factors that helped swell the number of Napoleons troops until they became an army. And then even more men followed.

In 1896, Churchill was determined to get a transfer to be a part of the war in Sudan. Many serving officers wanted the experience of battle to further their careers, as did Churchill but not his army career, his one as a man of letters. He had already written one book of war on the North West Frontier and needed a follow-up. His new posting confirmed, he also obtained a commission to write accounts of the war for the Morning Post, at £15 per article. His subsequent book, The River War, detailed the cause of war, the death of General Gordon in the siege at Khartoum, and his participation in the Battle of Omdurman. After the battle his unit was ordered to return to other duties, and Churchills personal experience of the war ended.

He destroyed the first French republic by force, yet led the construction of the modern French state with the creation of an innovative education system and the founding of the Bank of France. The French writer and historian, François-René, vicomte de Chateaubriand, was a contemporary and monarchist who despised Napoleon, but later grew to admire him. His final judgement on Bonaparte read, "Living, he failed in the world. Dead, he conquered it."

The most dangerous assignment in the most dangerous job of crewing a bomber was that of a gunner. And of all the gunners positions the absolute most dangerous was that of the waist gunner. Manning these crucial battle stations, the two waist gunners were situated back-to-back making it an awkward and challenging duty. And because a bombers profile offers a large and inviting target, the mortality rate for these fliers was a staggering 19 percent. Overall, U.S. bomber crews had a 20 percent mortality rate, 50 times higher than the U.S. infantry in the ETO. The rates of injury and capture were also higher among bomber crews, more than in any other area of military service.

By literal definition, the most important member of the "bombers" crew was the Bombardier. Often stationed in the extreme front of the craft, the bombardier took control of the airplane during the bombing run. The bombsight was connected to an autopilot and the Bombardier had soul responsibility for the plane until the payload was delivered. Often he would serve as the forward gunner depending on the type of aircraft. Originally the position of bombardier was held by a sergeant, but in 1941 the U.S.A.A.F. commissioned them as officers.

In December 1944, Germany launched a last-ditch assault across Belgium and northeastern France in the Ardennes Offensive, also known as the Battle of the Bulge. Met with initial success the drive was stalled by determined allied resistance, notably at the now surrounded crossroads town of Bastogne, Belgium. On 26 Dec., General George S. Patton launched an audacious plan to relieve the defenders of Bastogne. Employing a complex and shrewd strategy, he directed his Third Army to make a fierce counter-thrust movement and broke through the German lines, relieving the valiant defenders and ultimately pushing the Germans east across the Rhine. Here Patton wears a B-3 Bomber Jacket with his famous ivory handled, 45 caliber, Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army Revolvers on the hip.

As the United States most successful fighter ace of World War I, Captain Eddie Rickenbacker was credited with 26 aerial combat victories. Even as a young man, he exhibited a strong thrill seeking behavior - he tried to "fly" a bicycle outfitted with an umbrella off of a barn roof and drove in the inaugural Indianapolis 500. It was as a driver that Rickenbacker first served in France but soon finagled his way into flight school. He was chosen over several senior rank fliers to head the 94th Aero Squadron, nicknamed the Hat-in-the-Ring Gang. There he emphasized three core principles: Never attack unless there is at least 50/50 chance of success; always break off an engagement that seems hopeless; know the difference between cowardice and common sense.

Youngest son of a Union Civil War General and Medal of Honor recipient, Douglas MacArthur was himself nominated for the Medal of Honor three times (he was awarded the medal in 1945). A consummate student, MacArthur was valedictorian at the West Texas Military Academy and graduated top of the class at West Point, in 1903. During World War I, he rose to the rank of brigadier general. He had a long relationship with he Philippines including the appointment of Field Marshal of the Philippine Army. It was in the Philippines during WWII where he realized his highest rewards but not before suffering his greatest setbacks. In 1945 he achieved the rank of 5-star General and on 2 September accepted the formal Japanese surrender aboard the battleship USS Missouri.

In April 1898, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Theodore Roosevelt, resigned his post. There was a war on with Spain in Cuba and always a man of action, he saw little of it from behind his desk in Washington. He then helped form the First U.S. Volunteer Cavalry Regiment, the Rough Riders, who were composed of sophisticates, roustabouts, athletes, cowboys, and generally anyone who could shoot. They fought a short, minor skirmish known as the Battle of Las Guasimas and a larger, more famous one up Kettle Hill. As part of the San Juan Heights it became erroneously known as the Charge up San Juan Hill and earned T.R. the Medal of Honor, posthumously. He reveled in the fury of it claiming it "the great day of my life" and "my crowded hour."

Soldiers assigned to tank and reconnaissance units and armored infantry units in half-tracks needed cold weather gear when fighting from their armored vehicles since they did not have efficient space heating. All of the items were made of cotton twill in the OD#3 (a shade of olive drab), with the wool knit cuffs of the jacket in a similar color. Dark olive, Melton wool lined the garments for warmth. Nickel plated talon zippers closed the jacket front, the bib trouser fly, and side access pocket. Eventually, other ground fighting infantry, artillery, and ancillary units were also issued the winter combat uniform while fighting in frigid cold. The jacket itself became very popular in many of the services due to its thermal protection and ease of wearing.

In accordance with the terms of the 1919 Treaty of Versailles, Germany was banned from having any air force. When the Nazi Party came into power that treaty was abandoned and the Luftwaffes existence was publicly acknowledged. To aid Nationalist forces in the Spanish Civil War in 1936, the Luftwaffe sent a detachment known as the Condor Legion, ostensibly to test their fledgling air service. They were an unequivocal success. The Luftwaffe proved to be the most sophisticated, technologically advanced, and battle-experienced air force in the world. This pilots peak cap is made of blue-grey fabric, has a black patent leather peak, and is piped with silver cap-cords. A silver bullion embroidered Luftwaffe eagle has two stylized wings with cockade in the center.

In the summer of 1940 the Royal Air Force and the German Luftwaffe waged the Battle of Britain. Germany had plans for the invasion of England (Operation Sealion) but needed air superiority in order to achieve their goals. At that time the Nazi government fielded the most imposing, battle-tested air force in the world. It was up to the RAF meet this challenge and they did with some of the best fighter aircraft available - the Hawker Hurricane and the Supermarine Spitfire. Ultimately, the Luftwaffe was defeated forcing Adolf Hitler to abandon his invasion plans. This led Winston Churchill to proclaim, "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few."

The 99th Pursuit Squadron was the U.S. Army Air Forces first African American fighter squadron. The Army Air Corps established a training program for black aviators at the Tuskegee Institute thus earning them the nickname the "Tuskegee Airmen." Their other nickname, "Red Tails," came after they painted the tail assembly of their fighters a conspicuous crimson. On their 179 bomber escort missions they lost a total of only 27 bombers - a good record of protection. On one mission to destroy a tank factory in Berlin, they shot down three German Me 262s (historys first jet fighter) in a single day. For this and the rest of their exemplary service, the squadron was awarded three Distinguished Unit Citations.

The United States Army Air Forces (U.S.A.A.F. or A.A.F.) was the major land-based aerial warfare service of the United States Army. When established it was composed of 15 permanent combat groups, each organized into three or four flying squadrons. By World War II it held 67 combat groups: 26 were classified as Bombardment; 26 Pursuit groups (renamed fighter group in May 1942); 9 Reconnaissance groups; and 6 Troop Carrier/Combat Cargo groups. This figure represents a U.S.A.A.F. fighter pilot wearing the classic A2 leather flying jacket under his life preserver , and carrying parachute. He appears as he would have pre-flight ready to mount his P-38, P-47, or P-51.

After U.S. entered World War II and the formation of the Tank Destroyer Force, a suitable vehicle was needed to equip the new battalions. By November 1941, the Army requested a vehicle with a gun in a fully rotating turret as other interim models were criticized for being too poorly designed. The prototype of the M10 tank destroyer (TD) was conceived in early 1942 and delivered in April that year. The M10 was numerically the most important U.S. tank destroyer of World War II. It combined thin but sloped armor with the M4s reliable drivetrain and a reasonably potent anti-tank gun mounted in an open-topped turret. Despite its obsolescence in the face of newer German tanks like the Panther and the introduction of more powerful and better-designed TDs as replacements, the M10 remained in service until the end of the war.

The vehicle that came to be known as the M18 was the result of a convoluted development process that began in fall, 1941. At that time U.S. Army doctrine held that a force of dedicated tank destroyers would thwart enemy armored assaults. General Lesly McNair, head of Army Ground Forces, decreed that half of these antitank forces be towed weapons, contrary to the wishes of the head of the Tank Destroyer Center, Colonel A.D.Bruce, who advocated heavily armed, very fast, self-propelled tank destroyers.
Within these restrictions, development progressed through a series of vehicles - the 37mm Gun Motor Carriage T42; the 57mm Gun Motor Carriage T49; the 75mm Gun Motor Carriage T67; and finally in early 1943, the 76mm Gun Motor Carriage T70, which in March 1944 was standardized as the M18. Buick, the builder of the vehicles, dubbed the new tank destroyer the Hell-Cat (notice the hyphen).
The Hell-Cat first saw combat at Anzio, Italy, and from there use of the vehicle spread throughout the European campaign. While designed and built to be a tank destroyer, units in the field frequently pressed the vehicles into service as direct-support artillery for infantry. At their peak, in March 1945, there were 540 M18s in use in Europe. Those Hell-Cats are credited with the destruction of 526 enemy armored vehicles, at a cost of 216 of their own.

US M3A1 Half-Track 179,95 €

The U.S. produced more than 40,000 half-tracks between 1933 and 1944. And of the dozens of half-track variations produced, the M3 and M3A1 half-track Personnel Carriers were among the most widely used. As the name suggests, these vehicles were used to move men across beaches, through mud and snow and forest on every front, and also served as a prime mover for the M5 3-inch anti-tank gun.
During M3 production, external mine racks and interior grab handles were added and the suspension, fuel filters, and other components evolved. The M3 utilized a M25 pedestal mount (with a D54075 gun cradle) to support the M1919A4 .30 caliber machine gun, rather than the skate rail found in the previous version designated the M2. Near the end of production, the M25 pedestal mount with .30 caliber M1919A4 was replaced with a M49 ring mount and M2HB .50-caliber machine gun over the co-drivers seat. With the change in gun mounting the model designation was changed to M3A1.
This array of mounted machine guns could be dismounted from the vehicle, placed on tripods, and deployed in the field. On the M3A1 and M2A1 half-tracks, the squad leader was responsible for firing the pulpit-mounted machine gun. When the vehicle machine gun was dismounted the MG was crewed by a team of three riflemen. When a squad was mounted, the squad leaders manned the half-tracks machine guns, an array of two 30 cals. on either side with a rear pintle to mount one in back should the need arise, and a 50 cal. M2 forward. After the squad dismounted, the driver moved the half-track to a predetermined location and manned the M2. The "Ma Deuce" could provide fire at longer ranges and was very effective against light skinned vehicles. All vehicles carried tripods for the mounted machine guns so they could be dismounted and used in a mobile role.
