Before the battle of Lützen, the Swedish King Gustav II Adolf appointed the already war-experienced young Duke Bernard of Weimar as his deputy, just in case. And it came as feared. The ambitious Bernad von Weimar in particular is said to have insisted on the continuation of the battle. Bernad von Weimar commanded the Swedish left wing, which was engaged in heavy fighting with heavy losses against the enemy's right centre. Above all, the firing imperial battery of fourteen heavy guns at the Lützen windmills tore large gaps in the attacking Swedish brigades. In addition, there were counterattacks by the imperial infantry. Several times the Swedish brigades gave way and had to be persuaded to attack again by the commanders. Bernhard von Weimar commanded the first meeting of the Swedish left wing directly next to the infantry brigades engaged in heavy fighting.
The main figure of the series is Duke Bernhard von Weimar, who, with a raised standard, calls on the retreating infantrymen to stand firm.

From Lützen, where Wallenstein had stayed behind with Holk and probably with all the regiments destined for Leipzig, Count Rudolf Colloredo was sent with 300 men on the morning of 5 (15) November 1632 to occupy the town and castle of Weißenfels. A few companies of Croats had been added for security. Patrols of horsemen sent ahead soon reported the advance of the Swedes against Weißenfels, and a little later it became clear that the main force of the Protestant army under the king's leadership was marching past Weißenfels towards Lützen. Colloredo immediately ordered his 300 men and the old garrison of Weissenfels to march back, the Croats retreated to Rippach in a steady skirmish with the enemy cavalry detachments of the left wing of the Protestants.
When crossing the Rippach, the Croatian rearguard was still reached and a Croatian company was split up, losing its field emblem - a red standard with an imperial eagle on one side and a Fortuna on the other.
