The typical village encompassed about 100 residents, housed in single family huts made of wood with thatched roofs. Surrounding the village would be high fence. Mean to keep their livestock safe at night from forest predators like wolves and boars, it also provided some protection from marauding viking raiders.

Vikings raised most of the settlements that they encountered, which were commonly made of flammable materials such as wood and wattle-and-daub. The best surviving structures are stone churches.

W.Britain Photo Realistic backdrops are rendered on an industrial, photo giclée printer using pigment inks for deep, rich color. The saw, axe, adze, drawknife, and shave horse are tools for woodworking projects. The grinding wheel would help keep tools sharp, while the pulley would help move items in various tasks. The ladder would be only one of several types and lengths, and the stool and pail would be essential in the cow shed. Although most of these items are now only of interest to collectors, they were once important tools on every farm from the 18th until the mid-20th century.

Hand pumps chiefly operated with a piston or diaphragm mechanism with a check valve on the entry and exit ports to a water chamber. Because water from these pumps is drawn directly from the soil, it is more prone to contamination. If the water is not purified, consumption might lead to water-borne illnesses or disease. A notorious case was the 1854 Broad Street, London cholera outbreak. Contaminated water was suspected and when the handle of the public pump was removed, the outbreak subsided. Public pumps were not merely water sources but were also places where people gathered to share information, news, and gossip.

Construction of fortifications, roads, bridges, camouflaging positions, surveying, and mapping are the province of military engineers. Because they were in the vanguard of any military force these soldiers were called "pioneers." Their main weapons were the pick, axe, and shovel. Pictured in this grouping are four wicker gabions filled with earth and rock. The empty, pre-woven cylinders were light and would be carried in the ammunition train to be brought up to the front lines where the engineers would fill them, creating protection for siege guns and forward troops.

State and local governments had small bureaucracies and limited budgets which prevented a substantial response from the public sector. Out of necessity enterprising private citizens set up turnpike companies to build and maintain these vital arteries. Investments came from local landowners, farmers, and merchants, who realized the convenience, increased trade, and development that the roads would bring. Many were already comfortable with using private toll bridges, which by their very nature, faced little toll evasion - a serious problem for toll roads. The solution lay in the venerable turnpike fence. Their study construction and height of anywhere from from 4 to 6 feet dissuaded all but the most determined freeloader.

The chemical compound chlorophyll makes photosynthesis happen, allowing maple trees (and all other plants) to grow during the spring and summer. Its also what makes leaves look green. The shortening days and colder nights trigger the trees to prepare for winter. Photosynthesis shuts down, and chlorophyll fades from the leaves, allowing other colors to emerge. Some of those reds, yellows, and oranges have been there all along, masked by chlorophyll. The most vibrant fall foliage occurs when the end of summer is dry, and the Autumn days are sunny and nights are cool but above freezing.

Realistic and durable, this piece is designed to fit a common book shelf. Maples usually have easily recognizable palmate leaves (palm-shaped lobes stemming from the leaf base) and distinctive winged seeds called samaras. Most are shade-tolerant when young. Maples are often riparian (preferring moist soils) as found in deep woods and along stream banks but tolerate a wide variety of soils. Some larger maples known as "hard-wood maples" have valuable timber often used for their decorative graining. Maple is considered a tonewood, or a wood that carries sound waves well, and is used in numerous musical instruments including violins, guitars, and many drums.

Realistic and durable, this piece is designed to fit a common book shelf. Chilly nights that stay above freezing promote anthocyanin production. Both carotenoid and flavonoid compounds contribute to orange leaf color, especially the carotenoid beta-carotene, the same chemical that makes carrots orange. Beta-carotene absorbs blue and green light waves and reflects yellow and red, which makes it appear orange in maple leaves. Yellow leaf color comes predominantly from the cartenoid xanthophylls, which is similar to the pigment that makes egg yolks yellow. Brown leaf color comes from tannins, waste products that are left after the other colors fade.

Realistic and durable, this piece is designed to fit a common book shelf. Most species are deciduous, losing their leaves in the fall and are renowned for their autumnal leaf color. Many are shade-tolerant and are often understory rather than climax overstory (i.e., shorter than the main canopy) trees filling in the intermediate area between the forest floor and the tall tree canopy. The maples distinctive seeds are produced in early summer and are called samaras, or colloquially "maple keys" and in the modern era "whirlybirds" or "helicopters." During World War II, the U.S. Army developed a special airdrop supply carrier that could carry up to 65 pounds (29 kg) of supplies and had paired "wings" on each side so that it would spin as it dropped from a plane, like a maple seedpod.

Realistic and durable, this piece is designed to fit a common book shelf. The Iroquois and the Cherokee called these plantings the "Three Sisters" because they nurture each other like family. When grown together these three crops support each other structurally and biologically. The root nodules of the beans fix nitrogen in soil and help stabilize the relatively shallow root system of the maize keeping them grounded during high winds. In turn the corn acts a trellis for climbing beans while the wide leaves of the squash shade the ground, keeping the soil moist, and help to prevent the establishment of weeds.

War is catastrophic to the environment - when the goal is to prevail by any means necessary, the environment is often the first casualty. Mature trees are the most prominent component on the landscape and as such suffer the most discernible damage. They are also sturdy and can endure an excessive amount of hardship before succumbing to their wounds. While undergrowth and grasses are relatively fast growing, trees are not and can stand as silent sentinels for years to come.

Sometimes referred to as "deadfall," it is more specifically known as "blowdown" or "windthrow." If the tree did not uproot, but instead was broken along its trunk it would be called "windsnap." Large and tall trees are more susceptible to storms as their tremendous size and mass put enormous strain on their ability to stay anchored to the ground. Decaying trunks, fungus induced patches of dead tissue, or insect damage can weaken a tree enough to snap it when stressed by high winds.

Wooden cooperage was common in the Roman Empire and one of the earliest depictions of a wooden tub dates back even further to 2600 BC. Traditionally there are three types of cooperage: white, dry, and wet. White cooperage consists of straight-sided items such as butter churns, buckets, and tubs of various sizes and often made of pine or oak. Dry cooperage are kegs and casks for dry goods and may not be watertight or waterproof. Wet cooperage consists of barrels that are precisely crafted to be water tight. Smaller containers were generally referred to as kegs, while larger containers were called casks and could be rolled. The name barrel is often used today to describe any size container, although in historic terms this would be a 36 gallon cask.

This includes a stone boat that resembles a sled, used to move heavy items short distances, and an always useful wheelbarrow. A scythe, sickle, pitchforks, winnowing tray, and wooden grain shovel are a direct connection to the crops, while a pick and shovel are a nod to other tasks. Tools like this have been ubiquitous on farms in one form or another from the late 17th century until the mid-20th century.

Small ones were often used for moving any number of different items and could be drawn by small animals or simply pulled by a person. The style we have chosen to reproduce would have been common for hundreds of years throughout European towns and villages, from the 18th into the 20th century. These were often used by families to transport goods to sell on market days. The cargo we have included is dated to the 19th and early 20th centuries by the milk and cream cans that came into general use by the 1870s.

But the early to late fall - harvest time - is the most bountiful and joyous season. The harvest that began in August does not really end until later in October. The sun is quite literally setting on the garden season as the days grow shorter and cooler. The cereal grains such as oats, wheat, and corn are brought in, vegetables too, along with apples, picked and put-up for the winter. A variety of root vegetables, such as turnips, potatoes, and beets, are dug up and stored in stone-lined pits to prevent hard freezing. And with the late corn already collected only the last of the beans and the slow ripening squash and pumpkins remain among the brown and brittle stalks.
