He was, in the 18th century, the monarch of a German state, Prussia, which had few advantages and many small territories scattered from the east (East Prussia) to the west on the Rhine (Duchy of Kleve). His was a relatively small nation surrounded by France, Austria, Sweden and Russia, all hostile to Prussian interests.

These two volumes discuss the beginnings of Frederick II's reign and the development he further brought to the army. Having succeeded his father on 31 May 1740, he was able to take advantage of the difficult position in which Austria found itself, due to the thwarted succession of Maria Theresa, and went to war with his new army, intending to take possession of Silesia. With the Treaty of Breslau (11 June 1742) he obtained sovereignty over almost all of Silesia and the county of Glatz.

The three volumes focus on the armies of Savoy, Spain and Austria, which fought between 1717 and 1720 for control of Sardinia and the Kingdom of Sicily. The first part of the second volume deals with the army of Spain during the conquest or defence of the gained positions in Sardinia and the Kingdom of Sicily, and especially with the infantry. In addition to the uniforms of the Spanish army, the organisation of this force as well as its undertakings in the context of the so-called War of the Fourfold Alliance 1717-1720 are presented.

What for the military apparatus in Vienna could have been a beginning of a Great Military Reform, the triumph of the Generalissimus Archduke Charles, became one of the worst nightmares of Habsburg history. In short, after a series of unfortunate events and bad military conduct, Austria disappeared from the European scene, losing further important territories but, above all, losing its mighty armies. The author chooses to tell about that period, evaluating the military organization, starting from the recruitment, up to the details of the various units, because that army, was the largest army fielded by Austria before the Great War: man told about 600,000 men, including the Levies of regional volunteers, called Landwehr (in the territories of the Austrian Crown) and Insurrectio (in the territories of the Crown of St. Stephen)....
...At the end, Austria entered into war with the most powerful military force of the whole Napoleonic Period (in numbers of fighters), an effort which hardly seemed possible and which surprised the world. Unfortunately its three armies (and the Landwehr) did not surprised Bonaparte.

The author decides to report on this "dark" period of Austrian history, evaluating the military organisation from recruitment to the details of the various units, as this army was the largest force raised by Austria before the First World War: it was said to be 600,000 men, including the contingents of regional volunteers called Landwehr (in the territories of the Austrian Crown) and Insurrection (in the territories of the Crown of St. Stephen). In the end, Austria came into the war with the most powerful force of the entire Napoleonic era (in terms of numbers of soldiers), an effort that hardly seemed possible and that took the world by surprise. After the war against the Turks had already been raging in Hungary for more than half a century, a new clash of arms broke out between the Habsburg Empire and the Ottoman Empire in 1593 due to border violations. Both sides attached great importance to this dispute, which soon drew the neighbouring states of the two major conflict parties into the war. A complex and devious struggle with armed force and diplomacy began. The army organisation and equipment of the protagonists involved in this conflict is described in detail, together with the various campaigns, significant battles and sieges.

It was a clash very different from those then fought in Europe: a kind of war based on fast cavalry battles rather than the crash of armies of infantry.
The reasons for this anomaly are to be found in the very nature of the armed forces involved in the conflict. On the one hand the mighty army of the Sultan of Constantinople and the other the army of a European state team as a result of constant confrontation and clash with the Turkish had come to emulate the practice of war.

Following this victory, Alboin decided to lead his people to Italy, which had become severely depopulated after the long Gothic War (535554) between the Byzantine Empire and the Ostrogothic Kingdom there. The Lombards were joined by numerous Saxons, Heruls, Gepids, Bulgars, Thuringians, and Ostrogoths, and their invasion of Italy was almost unopposed. By late 569 they had conquered all the principal cities north of the Po River except Pavia, which fell in 572. At the same time, they occupied areas in central Italy and southern Italy. They established a Lombard Kingdom in Italy, later named Regnum Italicum ("Kingdom of Italy"), which reached its zenith under the eighth-century ruler Liutprand. In 774, the Kingdom was conquered by the Frankish King Charlemagne, and integrated into his Empire. However, Lombard nobles continued to rule parts of the Italian peninsula well into the 11th century, when they were conquered by the Normans, and added to their County of Sicily. Their legacy is apparent in the regional appellation, Lombardy.

This second edition is completly in colour.

It is restricted to a limited number of knights, initially 24 but increased to 30 in 1433, and 50 in 1516, plus the sovereign.[1] It received further privileges unusual to any order of knighthood: the sovereign undertook to consult the order before going to war; all disputes between the knights were to be settled by the order; at each chapter the deeds of each knight were held in review, and punishments and admonitions were dealt out to offenders, and to this the sovereign was expressly subject; the knights could claim as of right to be tried by their fellows on charges of rebellion, heresy and treason, and Charles V conferred on the order exclusive jurisdiction over all crimes committed by the knights; the arrest of the offender had to be by warrant signed by at least six knights, and during the process of charge and trial he remained not in prison but in the gentle custody of his fellow knights. The order, conceived in an ecclesiastical spirit in which mass and obsequies were prominent and the knights were seated in choirstalls like canons,[2] was explicitly denied to "heretics", and so became an exclusively Catholic award during the Reformation.
