In the scene depicted, they are guarded on a village square by Central Asian auxiliary troops of the Russian army. A charitable civilian couple is trying to bring food to the prisoners.
The tree was deliberately not engraved, as a large number of pewter trees already exist.
The figures can be added from the series Tilsit 1807 and Marauding Frenchmen 1812.

Even though the soldiers of the Trainkorps did not take part in battles and were probably considered inferior, they were still exposed to dangers. The supply system was a popular target for the enemy's light cavalry and partisans. The train also contained the thousands of civilians who moved with the Grand Army: Servants, civil servants, artists, scientists.
Each unit had a number of sutlers who sold food, tobacco and alcohol. These sturdy women rightly felt that they belonged to "their" regiment, whose uniform jacket they wore with their hats and women's skirts. They also served alcohol from a colourfully painted barrel during the marches. They knew how to handle weapons and soldiers and knew how to defend their skin against friend and foe. The army was always accompanied by swarms of ladies with commercially dubious reputations, but also wives and soldiers' children. All shared the fate of the army.
Our series shows, among others, artillerymen, wounded, train soldiers, exhausted lead horses, coachmen, sutlers, soldiers' wives and actresses with ladies' baggage.
Overall series:
Drawn by Hans Fritsch, engraved by S. Maier.
Very suitable for depicting:
Crossing the Berezina,
The Battle of the Berezina is the name given to the fighting during the retreat of Napoleon's Grande Armée from the troops of Tsar Alexander I across the Berezina (now Belorussian Bjaresina) from 26 to 28 November 1812. This battle was the last in the Russian campaign of 1812 before the withdrawal of the French army across the Niemen on 14 December 1812.

Series list for 100/19/7
Nos. 100-114 (2x) Nap. lead horse, pulling heavily, head lowered
Nos. 100-307 (1x) Nap. The battalion was divided into grenadiers, fusiliers and voltigeurs. The grenadier company had to solve the most difficult combat tasks and led the bayonet charge. As a rule, it was the longest-serving and most proven company and was located on the right wing. The fusilier companies formed the centre of the battalion and were also called centre companies, while the voltigeurs stood on the left wing and swarmed out in front of the battalion front as a disbanded swarm of riflemen in scattered combat. Voltigeurs and grenadiers were the "elite companies" because of their special tasks. Uniforms and armament differed only slightly, e.g. in collar colour or headgear. Usually the line infantry wore the chako, the military counterpart to the top hat. The chako offered protection against sabre cuts and "storage space" for the soldier's valuable small items, such as letters and money. There was also room for a flask. Occasionally, the elite companies of several battalions were combined into "mixed" units for special tasks.
Our series shows line infantrymen in harrowing scenes of retreat. They march, fight, charge, repel attacks with bayonets, eat, limp supported on crutches or rifles, fight over edibles, rest, get drunk, fall from exhaustion or plead for help. Officers try to keep order.
Overall series:
Drawn by Hans Fritsch, engraved by S. Maier.
Very suitable for depicting:
Crossing the Beresina,
The Battle of the Beresina is the name given to the fighting during the retreat of Napoleon's Grande Armée before the troops of Tsar Alexander I. Retreat from Russia.
These grenadiers are probably Napoleon's most famous soldiers. Many legends entwine around the brave and steadfast elite corps that served their emperor faithfully to the point of self-sacrifice. Even during the terrible retreat from Russia, discipline and fighting ability were never lost. Joining the "Grenadiers on Foot" was a coveted honour, for which the applicant had to have at least five years of infantry service and two campaigns in which he had distinguished himself militarily and morally. He also had to be at least 1.76 m tall. The only reminder of the original function of the grenadiers, the hurling of grenades, was the decorative element of a stylised grenade on the coattails, cartridge pouches and the cap lids of the high bearskin caps. The grenadiers wore the traditional braid and gold earrings. Their uniform remained untouched by the reform of 1812 and expressed the exclusive tradition of the troops. Some of the greybeards had begun their soldiering career under Napoleon as a young general of the Republic; the Emperor, with his excellent memory, knew them by name.
Later, in their Emperor's final battle at Waterloo (1815), they refused to surrender and were shot up without remnant - "The Guard dies, but it does not surrender!".
Our series shows the grenadiers marching in retreat, even at short rest.
Overall series:
Drawn by Hans Fritsch, engraved by S. Maier.
Very suitable for depicting:
Crossing the Berezina,
The Battle of the Berezina is the name given to the fighting during the retreat of Napoleon's Grande Armée before the troops of Tsar Alexander I. The hunters on horseback were among the so-called possessed of the privilege of providing a squadron for service in the respective imperial residence. They were barracked in the Paris Military School, uniformed in hussar style, and in the field formed to some extent Napoleon's bodyguards.
Our series shows hunters on horseback, but also hunters trudging along on foot, as many horses died or were slaughtered during the retreat.
Overall series:
Drawn by Hans Fritsch, engraved by S. Dead and dying horses, but also sick and exhausted soldiers became their prey. They were mostly loyal soldiers of the Emperor, albeit with less enthusiasm, but were often treated condescendingly by the French. "When the rations were distributed, we had to fight for every loaf of bread, every pound of meat. In this respect, the French treated us like little boys. On the battlefield it was a different matter, where Napoleon's orders had to be carried out...", remarks a Württemberg lieutenant.
Among the soldiers of the Bavarian regiments who came from Tyrol, however, the number of deserters was particularly high; the suppression of the Tyrolean uprising under Andreas Hofer (1809) had not been forgotten. During the retreat, they practically disbanded. Later, after Napoleon's heavy defeats in the wars of liberation, these states switched to the allies' camp.
Our series shows line infantrymen of these units on the gruelling retreat.
Very suitable for depicting:
Crossing the Berezina,
The Battle of the Berezina is the name given to the fighting during the retreat of Napoleon's Grande Armée from the troops of Tsar Alexander I across the Berezina (now Belarusian Bjaresina) from 26 to 28 November 1812.
This battle was the last in the Russian campaign of 1812 before the withdrawal of the French army across the Niemen on 14 December 1812.

Series list for 100/19/9
No. 100-245 (4x) Bavarian infantryman of the line
No. 100-246 (4x) Bavarian infantryman of the line, with rifle/pouch. rifle/pouch
No. 100-247 (4x) Württemberg line infantryman
