Volume 156 of the series "From Reason to Revolution 1721-1815." Bogdanovich's "Russian History of the War of 1813," now available in English translation for the first time, continues the history of the War of 1812. In his account of the events of 1813, the author strives for a precise picture of one of the most important years in European history and acknowledges the Russian army's role in the liberation of Germany. Russia, of course, could not defeat Napoleon alone. However, after beginning the war in Prussia and the Duchy of Warsaw without the support of allies, the Russians succeeded in winning over Prussia and eventually also Austria, Sweden, and Great Britain to their cause. This book will appeal to anyone interested in the military history of the Napoleonic Wars, as well as wargamers, and offers a fascinating glimpse into the surprisingly cosmopolitan Russian officers of that era. Although Bogdanovich had access to Russian state archives and private records, he also draws extensively on published German and French memoirs and historical works to provide additional context and balance. Volume 1 covers the period from the Russian invasion of the Duchy of Warsaw to the armistice in June 1813. Volume 2 covers the period from the resumption of hostilities in August 1813 to the coalition's advance to the Rhine in December 1813, from the Battle of Katzbach to the decisive Battle of Leipzig and on to the Battle of Hanau.

With the Peace of Tilsit and the Congress of Erfurt in 1808, this power struggle seemed to have come to an end. When Russia no longer accepted France's continental blockade and put its own politics first, Napoleon thought he could end this with the threat of force. In 1812, the Grande Armée marched into Russia. The campaign ended disastrously for France and its allies. From 1813 onwards, the Russian armies advanced inexorably and were ultimately among the victors. Gains in territory and population made the Russian Empire stronger than ever for the next few decades. The book features eyewitness accounts from people who were involved in many of the conflicts leading up to the second invasion of Paris in 1815.

Radozhitskii, a distinguished Russian artillery officer, recorded his experiences shortly after the wars against Napoleon, drawing on notes he had made during his campaigns. Born in 1788, the author was educated at the Imperial Orphanage and entered military service in 1806 as part of an artillery unit. Through his skill and determination, he steadily rose through the ranks and earned a reputation as a capable and dedicated officer. Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812 changed his life. As an artillery lieutenant, Radozhitskii took part in almost all the major battles of this historic campaign. In 1813-1814, he took part in the German War of Liberation and the invasion of France, where he distinguished himself in several battles before ending the war as a staff captain in Paris in 1814. Radozhitskii's memoirs offer a vivid, unvarnished insight into the daily life of Russian officers during the Napoleonic Wars. This volume accompanies him through the invasion of France and its aftermath, offering impressive descriptions of the trials and triumphs of the soldiers, gripping accounts of battles and poignant stories of human suffering. When these memoirs were first published in Russia, they captivated the public and received widespread acclaim. Leo Tolstoy drew on them when writing his epic War and Peace. Today, these moving pages allow readers to experience the chaos, courage and calamity of the Napoleonic era through the eyes of a contemporary witness.

Bogdanovich's Russian history of the War of 1813, published in English for the first time, follows on from his history of the War of 1812. In his account of the events of 1813, the author strives to give an accurate portrayal of one of the most important years in European history and pays tribute to the Russian army's achievements in liberating Germany. Of course, Russia could not defeat Napoleon alone. But the Russians, who had started the war in Prussia and the Duchy of Warsaw without the help of allies, managed to win Prussia over to their cause and eventually (in Volume 2) Austria, Sweden and Great Britain as well. This book will interest both those interested in Napoleon's military history and wargamers, and it provides a fascinating insight into the surprisingly cosmopolitan Russian officers of the time. Although Bogdanovich had access to Russian state archives and private documents, he also draws extensively on published German and French memoirs and historical works to provide additional context and paint a balanced picture. Volume 1 covers the period from the Russian invasion of the Duchy of Warsaw to the armistice in June 1813, including Prussia's defection to the Russian side, the liberation of Berlin and Hamburg, the invasion of Saxony and the monumental battles of Lützen and Bautzen, followed by the Russian-Prussian retreat to Silesia. Volume 2 will cover the period from the resumption of hostilities in August 1813 to the advance of the coalition to the Rhine in December 1813.

It is the only publicly available English translation of Bogdanovich's official history of the participation of the Russian armed forces in the fight against Napoleon and his allies in Russia in 1812. This translation also includes excerpts from Ivan Liprandi's critique of Bogdanovich's work. This final volume of the trilogy continues to cover the operations from the Russian point of view; from Napoleon's abandonment of Moscow to the expulsion of the Grande Armée from the Russian Empire, including the operations against the Prussian and Austrian-Saxon auxiliary corps on the flanks. The author had full access to Russian state archives, but also referred extensively to published works by French and German historians to provide a broader context. The maps show entire phases of the war, while the battle plans show the location of the dominant terrain according to detailed state surveys, while villages, forests and roads were copied from previously published Russian plans. The appendices and footnotes also contain detailed battle orders, important correspondence and a bibliography with the critical evaluations of these sources by Bogdanovich and Liprandi.

Led by Suvorov, who many believed would have been a match for Napoleon, the Russian and Austrian forces scored victory after victory against the French. This is much more than a story of strategy and tactics; it is a tale of adventure, of a Russian army fighting desperate rearguard actions and attempting to escape across perilous mountain passes by night. Suvorov's memory is still held in high regard by the Russian military today. The last and greatest campaign of this legendary soldier has found a suitable narrator in Christopher Duffy. Suvorov's marches and battles can be followed with the help of numerous maps, photographs and original drawings that reflect the appearance of the troops.

The author, Ilya Timofeyevich Radozhitskii, served with distinction during the wars against Napoleon and wrote down his reminisces shortly after the war based on the notes that he kept while campaigning. Born in 1788, Radozhitskii studied at the Imperial Orphanage, enlisted in the artillery unit in 1806, and steadily rose through the ranks, earning a reputation of a capable officer.
Napoleons invasion of Russia in 1812 changed his life. Serving as an artillery lieutenant, he saw action in virtually every major battle of that historic campaign. In 1813-1814, Radozhitskii took part in the War of the German Liberation and the invasion of France, serving with distinction at Bischofswerde, Bautzen, Katzbach, and Leipzig before finishing the war as a staff captain in Paris in 1814. Upon Napoleons return in 1815, Radozhitskii was assigned to the Russian Expeditionary Corps that was dispatched to France but arrived too late to confront Napoleon.

Radozhitskii offers fresh insight into the life and daily experiences of Russian officers during the Napoleonic Wars. This volume follows Radozhitskii across Germany as the Russian army, buoyed by the victory over Napoleon in 1812, marched on to liberate German states. Radozhitskiis narrative contains striking descriptions of the wartime experiences of soldiers and officers, vivid accounts of the battles, and heartrending stories from the French retreat. When published in Russia, these memoirs garnered considerable public attention and Leo Tolstoy consulted them extensively while writing his famous "War and Peace".

The winter campaign culminated with the Battle of Eylau, with consideration to the exhaustion of the fighting armies, frosts, impassable roads and political factors that stopped the bloodshed in the main theatre of war until May.

The narrative then considers the inactivity of the armies, and exhaustion of all possible resources in anticipation of the spring campaign, before concluding with Napoleons repulse at Heilsberg, the Russian defeat at Freidland, retreat to the right bank of the Neman and peace at Tilsit.

Wounded at the battle of Ostrovno, he remained in ranks and later fought at Smolensk, Lubino (Valutina Gora) and Borodino, lamented the surrender of Moscow, and celebrated Russian victories at Vyazma and Krasnyi. He watched in bewilderment the catastrophe that engulfed Napoleons forces that winter, an event he vividly describes in his memoirs. Radozhitskii offers fresh insight into the life and daily experiences of Russian officers during the Napoleonic Wars.

Starting in the summer of 1812 and following the travails of his unit over the next six months, Radozhitskiis narrative contains striking descriptions of the wartime experiences of soldiers and officers, vivid accounts of the battles, and heartrending stories from the French retreat. When published in Russia, these memoirs garnered considerable public attention and Leo Tolstoy consulted them extensively while writing his famous "War and Peace".

The artillery of Tsarina Catherine II was mainly a collection of pieces left over from the Seven Years War. Tsar Paul I introduced a much needed reform with a new artillery system that under his son, Tsar Alexander I, became the excellent M1805 Arakcheev system. This is an invaluable reference for the historian, model maker and restorer of ordnance of this period.

He has evaluated numerous sources and enriches the publications available on the subject - which are not as extensive as on other armies - with a thorough presentation. This is likely to find a large readership, as it covers the Napoleonic Wars, in which Russia played a not insignificant role. As is well known, many interested experts and laypeople are still intensively involved with this period.
This very comprehensive and detailed publication on the cuirassiers and dragoons describes how their organisation and structure developed, how the regiments were manned, in which battles and campaigns they participated, what their armament and equipment looked like, and last but not least how their uniforms looked. The latter is dealt with extensively, with the development described in detail. The reader must always keep in mind that in that era, years could pass between the issuance of a decree and its full implementation.
This applied to the uniforms as well as the weaponry and equipment. In the regiments of the Guard, on which the tsar kept a close eye, these changes naturally happened more quickly than was the case for Army regiments in the gigantic Russian empire's distant provinces. From this perspective, the descriptions of the Guard regiments address both their special characteristics and their elevated status. An interesting aspect of the book is the description of not just the combatants but also the non-combatants within these regiments, a subject usually not covered at all in comparable publications. Here, not only are their uniforms, weapons and equipment described but also their distinct roles. Additionally, the book provides detailed information on the Gendarmerie Regiment created near the end of the Napoleonic Wars.
This work can provide new insights to both military scientists and military historians but also historical filmmakers, military miniature collectors and interested laypeople. This book's clear structure makes it easy to use as a reference work. The appended lexicon of Russian military terms and their English translation enable a clear conceptual classification in both languages.
This volume provides the most thorough work available on the Russian cuirassier and dragoon regiments during the Napoleonic Wars. Based on the Russian author's highly detailed work, it addresses the organisation, campaigns and battles, uniforms, weapons, personal and unit equipment, mounts, unit awards and flags, with their development during the period. Not only does this edition provide excellent graphics of uniforms but also high-quality photos of rare museum pieces, and contemporary depictions of the cuirassiers and dragoons of both the Guard and Army regiments. It is an indispensable work for anyone with a serious interest in the Russian Army during the Napoleonic Wars.

Contents

Introduction

Organisation
Organisation of the Cuirassier Regiments
Organisation of the Dragoon Regiments
Organisation of the Life Horse Guard Regiment
Organisation of the Chevalier Guard Regiment
Organization of the Life Guard Dragoon Regiment
Organizational Changes 1803 to 1809
Organizational Changes 1810 to 1815
Refilling the Regiments

Campaigns and Battles
Cuirassier Regiments
Dragoon Regiments

Cuirassiers
Uniforms of the Army Regiments
Differences in the Uniform of the Guard Cuirassiers
Weapons
Equipment
Horse Furniture

Dragoons
Uniforms of the Army Regiments
Weapons
Equipment
Horse Furniture

Differences in the Uniform and Equipment of the Life Guard Dragoon Regiment

Army Gendarme Uniforms

Differences in the Uniform and Equipment of Non-Combatants

Standards and Regimental Awards

Sources

Translation of Russian Terms into English

He has analysed numerous sources and enriches the existing publications - which are not as comprehensive as those on other armies - with a qualified account. This should find a large readership, as it covers the Napoleonic Wars, in which Russia played a not inconsiderable role. It is well known that many interested experts and laymen continue to study this period intensively.

In his publication, the author takes a very comprehensive and detailed look at the cuirassiers and dragoons. He describes how the organisation and structure developed, how the regiments were replenished, where they were deployed, what their armament and equipment looked like and, last but not least, how their uniforms appeared. The latter takes up a lot of space and is described as it developed. The reader must always bear in mind that it could take years from the promulgation of a decree to its full implementation. This applied to uniforms as well as armour and equipment. In the regiments belonging to the Guard, on which the eye of the ruler rested, these changes naturally progressed more quickly than was the case in the deep provinces of the vast Russian Empire. In the description of the regiments, special features of the Guards are presented from this perspective, but also from the point of view of their prominent position. An interesting aspect of the work is the detailed depiction of both combatants and non-combatants. The latter are often not mentioned at all in comparable publications. Here, on the other hand, not only is their uniform, armour and equipment described, but their specific function is also explained.

Overall, it can be said that this work can provide both military scientists and military historians with detailed insights as well as historical film makers, tin figure collectors and interested laymen with new insights. The clear structure of this work makes it easy to use as a reference work. The appended index of Russian terms and their German translation enables a clear conceptual categorisation in both languages.

It then looks at the Tsars diplomatic efforts: Emperor Alexanders journey abroad; Prussias changing relationship with Napoleon; the Treaty of Potsdam; and the Tsars relations with Britain and Sweden. Returning to the Danube theatre the history covers: Kutuzovs retreat from Braunau to Krems, the actions at Lambach and Amstetten, the Battles of Krems and Dürnstein; Kutuzovs march from Braunau to Znaim; Bagrations march to Hollabrun; and the action at Schöngrabern.
After a consideration of operations in the Tyrol and Italy, the narrative shifts to the arrival of Buxhoevedens corps and the Austerlitz campaign including the action at Wischau and the pre-battle manoeuvring and dispositions. Austerlitz itself is then considered in detail: Napoleons dispositions; initial operations by Dokhturov, Langeron and Przhibyshevsky; the defeat of the coalition centre; Kamenskys battle; the exploits of Prince Volkonsky; the actions of the coalition cavalry; the defeat of the Russian Guard; Bagrations operations; the defeat of Langeron and Przhibyshevsky; Dokhturovs exploits; the coalition withdrawal; casualties of the coalition and French armies.
The narrative of the primary theatre of war concludes with the arrival of Essens corps, the Tsars return to Russia, the Peace of Pressburg, and the march of the Russians through Hungary and Galicia. However, details are also included of subsidiary operations in Hanover under Tolstoy in conjunction with the British and Swedes, and in the Mediterranean under Lacy at Naples and Corfu.

This is followed by a discussion of the Tsar's diplomatic endeavours: Emperor Alexander's journey abroad, Prussia's changing relations with Napoleon, the Potsdam Agreement and the Tsar's relations with Britain and Sweden. The story returns to the Danube theatre of war and covers: Kutuzov's retreat from Braunau to Krems, the battles at Lambach and Amstetten, the battles of Krems and Dürnstein, Kutuzov's march from Braunau to Znaim, Bagration's march to Hollabrun and the battles at Schöngrabern.
After an examination of the operations in Tyrol and Italy, the arrival of Buxhoeveden's corps and the campaign of Austerlitz, including the action at Wischau and the manoeuvres and dispositions before the battle, are described. Austerlitz itself is then considered in detail: Napoleon's dispositions; the initial operations of Dokhturov, Langeron and Przhibyshevsky; the defeat of the coalition centre; the battle of Kamensky; the exploits of Prince Volkonsky; the actions of the coalition cavalry; the defeat of the Russian Guards; the operations of Bagration; the defeat of Langeron and Przhibyshevsky; the exploits of Dokhturov; the retreat of the coalition; the losses of the coalition and the French armies.
The description of the main theatre of war concludes with the arrival of the Essen Corps, the Tsar's return to Russia, the Peace of Pressburg and the Russian march through Hungary and Galicia. However, the secondary operations in Hanover under Tolstoy in conjunction with the British and Swedes and in the Mediterranean under Lacy at Naples and Corfu are also described in detail.

By late November Napoleon had reached the banks of the River Berezina - the last natural obstacle between his army and the safety of the Polish frontier. But instead of finding the river frozen solid enough to march his men across, an unseasonable thaw had turned the Berezina into an icy torrent. Having already ordered the burning of his bridging equipment, Napoleon's predicament was serious enough: but with the army of Admiral Chichagov holding the opposite bank, and those of Kutusov and Wittgenstein closing fast in, it was critical. Only a miracle could save him. In a gripping narrative Alexander Mikaberidze describes how Napoleon rose from the pit of despair to the peak of his powers in order to achieve that miracle. Drawing on contemporary sources - letters, diaries, memoirs - he recreates one of the greatest escapes in military history - a story often half-told in general histories of the Russian campaign but never before fully explored.

The story moves from Kronstadt to Corfu, to the siege of Ragusa and battle at Mount Athos, to the chaotic reshuffling of alliances with the signing of the Treaty of Tilsit and the ill-fated dispersion of the fleet among the British, French, and Austrians.Straddling the Wars of the Third and Fourth Coalitions and the Russo-Turkish War, Senyavin carefully manoeuvred around multiple threats from all sides with limited resources and came through with minimal losses, though political circumstances ultimately robbed him of the laurels.Told from the perspective of a midshipman aboard the frigate Venus, but augmented and expanded with archival data and interviews with his comrades and acquaintances, Bronevskiy illuminated an often-overlooked theatre of war and sought to teach his readership about the myriad cultures and rich history of the region, transforming his personal journals into a comprehensive history of the campaign. His scope varies from personal interactions with civilians and tours of local landmarks to the diplomatic correspondence of general and admirals and the combat actions of whole squadrons and corps.Unabridged, illustrated with all the original engravings, featuring newly translated maps and annotated throughout with notes and corrections, Boland?s translation brings Bronevskiy to a new, wider audience in a faithful but approachable presentation.

Having survived the ventures of the Third and Fourth Coalition Wars and the Russo-Turkish War, Admiral Senyavin manoeuvred with limited resources amidst diverse threats and came out of the whole affair with minimal losses, although political circumstances ultimately robbed him of the laurels he deserved. The our is the first world complete pubblication in English language. Compiled at Saint Petersburg during the year from 1837 and 1851, the Historical Description of the Clothing and Arms of the Russian Army has had an enormous impact and great importance for the study on the history of Russian costume and uniformology development over the past centuries .There are various ancient editions of the work but Mark Conrad's translation is the first one and the best, remaining true to the original structure and essential style of the text. Conrad's comprehensive translation is an indispensable resource for today's historian, strategists, and scholars. The Viskovatov's enormous work is based on a great quantity of archival documents and contains four thousand colored and b/w illustrations. It is composed by 30 or 34 volumes (1st edition 1-30, St. Petersburg, 1841-62, and 2nd edition Vols. 1-34, St. Petersburg - Novosibirsk - Leningrad, 1899-1948). The topics discussed start from the early czars until the late nineteenth century. Our new edition has enriched the book with the plates: we revised and colored many of the images so far available just in black and white, as well we found some rare color plates with the collaboration of private collectors. These, together with the first ever English translation, make our collection exclusive and of great value.

There are various older editions of this work, but the edition by Mark Conrad is the oldest and best because it retains the structure of the original and the style of the text as far as possible. Conrad's comprehensive translation is an indispensable source of information for today's historians, uniform experts and anyone wishing to study the equipment of the Russian army between 1796 and 1825. This new edition of Viskovatov's uniform work has been upgraded by the editors to the extent that a considerable number of the plates previously only available in black and white have been re-coloured, so that we now have a Viskovatov illustrated predominantly in colour. It was also possible to include some very rare colour plates from private collections in the corpus to complete the work. All this, together with the first English-language translation, adds to the great value of this complete work.
