This heavily armoured aircraft was virtually unrivalled in terms of firepower, but it was difficult to manoeuvre and an easy target for fighters. The Il-2 had to attack enemy targets from very low altitudes, which led to enormous losses of equipment and personnel. It is therefore not surprising that after 80 combat missions against the Germans, Vasily Emelianenko received the highest award: the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. He flew a total of 92 missions. His aircraft was shot down three times, and each time he managed to return to base, demonstrating remarkable resilience and courage in terrifying circumstances. Written in a lively tone, Vasily Emelianenko's memoirs offer a rare insight into the reality of combat on the Eastern Front and the tactics of the Soviet Air Force. He recounts with remarkable clarity the difficulties and consequences of fighting an enemy that was as skilled as it was increasingly desperate. Encounters with enemy fighter planes, emergency landings in enemy territory and the loss of close friends are described in a dramatic and moving way in this rare eyewitness account.

During their relatively short period of service, dive bombers often contributed decisively to the success of military operations by many armed forces. Designed for precision attacks on protected buildings, small targets and surface vessels, these aircraft sometimes replaced traditional artillery and offered a more effective solution for certain types of targets. Although they were often confused with dive bombers or ground attack aircraft and tactical support aircraft, dive bombers played a special role and were characterised by specific technical and tactical deployment solutions. The line between these different types of aircraft may seem blurred, but they should not be confused with one another. In the Soviet Union, the initial approach to developing dive bombers was uncertain, but soon there was a strong push to realise and introduce aircraft with these characteristics. Although to a lesser extent than other belligerents, after a long series of prototypes and unsuccessful attempts, the Soviet aviation industry also succeeded in providing its air force with a number of dive bombers that proved their effectiveness in war.

The second volume of this four-part series deals in detail with the combat aircraft delivered to the Soviet Union during the Second World War under the Lend-Lease Act. Based on Soviet archives, Allied records and eyewitness accounts, aviation historian Vladimir Kotelnikov provides the most comprehensive study to date of the British and American combat aircraft used on the Eastern Front. The volume covers the deployment and operational use of the British Hawker Hurricane and Supermarine Spitfire, as well as American aircraft such as the Curtiss P-40, Bell P-39 Airacobra and later the P-63 Kingcobra. Kotelnikov examines the numbers delivered, the routes by which they reached the Soviet Union, and the combat units to which they were assigned. He describes the training and retraining of Soviet pilots, the adaptation of tactics to the characteristics of the individual models, and the logistical challenges of maintaining foreign aircraft under frontline conditions. Soviet assessments of the aircraft are presented in detail, from the robust P-39, which was valued for its heavy armament and low-altitude performance, to the Hurricane, whose obsolescence became painfully apparent in combat, to the Spitfire, which was admired for its manoeuvrability but could only be used to a limited extent in Soviet service. First-hand combat reports and pilot testimonies bring these assessments to life and show how Western fighter aircraft fared against the Luftwaffe in the merciless skies of the Eastern Front. Illustrated with colour profiles, hundreds of rare photographs, original documents and technical tables, this volume provides a detailed portrait of how Lend-Lease fighter aircraft contributed to Soviet air power. It shows not only their operational impact, but also how their use influenced Soviet thinking about aircraft design and doctrine in the years that followed.

Pages : 104 | Images : 255 b/w photos, 8pp colour profiles, 1 b/w map

A volume from the series Europe @ War. The third volume of this four-part series deals with the bombers, transport aircraft and seaplanes that were delivered to the Soviet Union under the Lend-Lease Act. Drawing on extensive Soviet and Western archival sources, aviation historian Vladimir Kotelnikov provides the most detailed analysis to date of how these aircraft were delivered, adapted and used in combat on the Eastern Front and in Soviet naval operations. This volume focuses on the American Douglas A-20 Boston and North American B-25 Mitchell aircraft, which gave the Soviet Air Force versatile and modern tactical bombing capabilities. Kotelnikov examines their delivery in large numbers, the training of Soviet crews and the way they were integrated into existing units and doctrines. He analyses the missions flown low-level attacks, airspace surveillance and close air support and assesses their performance in the face of formidable German defences. Equally important were the thousands of Douglas C-47 Skytrains (Dakotas), which became the backbone of Soviet transport aviation. The book examines their role in supplying the front, supporting the partisan war, and enabling strategic mobility in a theatre of war where logistics often determined the outcome of campaigns. The study also highlights the contribution of Allied aircraft to Soviet naval aviation. From PBY Catalinas and other flying boats deployed in Arctic waters to long-range patrols and convoy escort operations, these machines extended the Soviet Union's maritime reach at a critical stage of the war. Illustrated with colour profiles, hundreds of rare photographs, maps and technical tables, this volume offers a detailed portrait of how Allied bombers, transport aircraft and seaplanes shaped Soviet combat power. It shows their essential role in supporting the Red Air Force and Navy in the fight against the Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine, as well as in laying the foundations for the development of Soviet aviation in the post-war period.

It contains over 140 photos showing these vehicles in operational conditions, as seen and used by soldiers often both as a means of transport and as accommodation. Instead of embellished official pictures, this volume presents the raw and authentic reality of military service. It is an invaluable reference for both military historians and model builders.

They consisted of three specialised branches radio-technical troops, surface-to-air missile troops and fighter aircraft troops (IA-PVO) and their primary task was to intercept and destroy enemy aircraft, from bombers to reconnaissance aircraft. The IA-PVO operated independently of the Soviet Air Force, and its pilots were considered elite, selected for their exceptional flying skills and receiving higher salaries due to their immense responsibility, especially in the event of a NATO air attack. A notable figure in the IA-PVO was Major Oleg Petrovich Vydrenok. He graduated from the Higher Military Aviation School in Stavropol in 1976 and was one of only 20 lieutenants out of a total of 200 who were appointed third class military pilots. During his 14-year career, Vydrenok flew various aircraft, including the Tupolev Tu-128 Fiddler and the Mikoyan MiG-31 Foxhound, and gained extensive experience in operations during the Cold War. In Soviet Cold War Pilot, Vydrenok's training and operational experience provide a detailed comparison with Western air forces and insights into the techniques developed to counter NATO aircraft such as the SR-71 Blackbird and B-52 Stratofortress, demonstrating his crucial role in the Soviet air defence system.

Hundreds of fighters were destroyed in the first few days, but many of them were obsolete biplanes. Soviet Fighters of the Second World War describes the development of fighters from the dark days of Barbarossa to the final triumph over Berlin. Starting with obsolete aircraft such as the Polikarpov Po-2 biplane and single-engine fighters, the Soviets opted for two main lines of development: the LaGG-3 with a radial engine and its derivatives with a radial engine, the La-5 and La-7, and the Yakovlev fighters with a radial engine, which were produced in larger numbers than any other fighter series. These aircraft are not only described in detail, but experimental fighter aircraft are also covered. In addition, colour profiles illustrate these aircraft in terms of design, camouflage and markings. From the I-15bis biplane of the late 1930s to the outstanding La-7 and Yak-3 fighter aircraft of the last year of the war, all fighter aircraft of the Red Air Fleet are covered in this comprehensive volume.

The Soviet air force was a highly developed air force capable of supporting ground troops, gathering intelligence and launching long-range air strikes. Illustrated throughout with detailed artwork showing authentic markings and comprehensive technical data, the book is a concise guide to the military aircraft used by the Russian Air Force from the end of World War II until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Arranged by type, the book contains all the major aircraft used by the Soviet Air Force, from the MiG-15 jet fighter, which achieved such great success against Western aircraft in the Korean War, to the Tu-95 long-range bomber, capable of carrying nuclear weapons, and the ever-adaptable Mil Mi-8 Hip helicopter, which was used as a troop carrier, reconnaissance aircraft, electronic warfare platform, attack platform, artillery spotter and airborne command post. The guide is illustrated with profile graphics, three-view drawings and dynamic views of the most famous aircraft of the period, such as the Ilyushin Il-28 Beagle, a jet bomber used in the 1950s and 1960s in wars in the Middle East, and the MiG-21 Fishbed interceptor, the most-produced aircraft of all time. With 100 detailed artworks, the Technical Guide. Russian Aircraft of the Cold War is a reference book for model builders and aviation enthusiasts.

Four decades have passed since the Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster, the worst nuclear disaster to date and one of the greatest man-made disasters of all time. Much has been written about this disaster and its aftermath, films have been made and TV series produced. At first glance, there doesn't seem to be much of value to add. Yet despite the abundance of material on the subject that is available when dealing with most English-language sources on the topic, it is impossible not to notice that certain aspects of the event are treated rather superficially. The efforts to deal with the aftermath of the disaster included a significant use of aviation, particularly helicopters. While most attention is usually paid to the men involved in cleaning up the disaster area, especially the physical removal of radioactive debris, the pilots' contribution, particularly that of the helicopter crews, also deserves recognition. This volume aims to give them the recognition they deserve by showcasing their contribution. To achieve this, it is still essential to consider the broader context, which includes at least a brief description of the development of nuclear energy in the Soviet Union, the Chernobyl disaster and the efforts to deal with its aftermath. Of course, the development of helicopters in the USSR should also not be left unmentioned. Furthermore, the Chernobyl disaster, by its very nature, cannot be separated from the broader context of the nuclear age, the Cold War and the hypothetical nuclear war from which, fortunately, we have so far been spared. Last but not least, the aftermath of this disaster also deserves attention, especially as it was far-reaching and can still be felt today.

The booklet continues the story of the P-40 Kittyhawk aircraft in the Soviet Arctic, focussing on their operations from mid-1944 to the end of the war. As the conflict intensified, these versatile aircraft were tasked with reconnaissance missions, ground support and vital defence operations in the unforgiving northern environment. This volume examines the adaptability and lasting impact of the Kittyhawks through detailed operational reports and personal narratives. It also analyses their legacy within Soviet aviation and shows how these aircraft contributed to the eventual Soviet victory on the Eastern Front. With its wealth of previously unpublished sources and vivid historical detail, this final volume will captivate aviation enthusiasts, modellers, historians and anyone interested in the role of Allied aircraft in Soviet service during the Second World War.

Volume 1 traces Russia's path from the first military balloon observation unit to the founding of the "Rossiyskiy Imperatorskiy Voyenno-Vozdushnyy Flot" (RIVVF, Imperial Russian Military Air Fleet). It highlights the challenges of establishing an effective air service, including the procurement of aircraft, training of airmen and pioneering aerial reconnaissance, while offering a comparative perspective on Russia's efforts in relation to other European powers. Profusely illustrated with photographs, diagrams and illustrations, the book provides a lively account of Russia's formative contributions to military aviation.
