In Ancient Roman times the Testudo formation or Tortoise Formation was a kind of shield wall formation commonly used to protect a large group of soldiers moving towards the enemy. In the Testudo the soldiers would align their shields to the front and on top of their formation... Some groups would also carry their shields on both flanks of the formation for additional protection. This mode of defence offered some a degree of protection against rocks, arrows and other projectiles while the unit still advanced towards the enemy slowly but surely. The Ballista, sometimes called the bolt-thrower was an ancient missile weapon that launched a deadly projectile at a distant target. Originally designed by the Greeks, the Roman Army improved and adapted it to meet their more mobile military requirements as they campaigned throughout the Mediterranean and across Europe. Because of its mobility and adaptability it could also be used on ships as well as to defend fixed fortifications. Many different sizes and styles were employed however the most numerous in service were the smaller, easily portable versions similar to the one K&C has made. A crew of three Legionaries was usually employed to transport the weapon, assemble it and fully operate it in battle.

Every Roman Legion was commanded by a "Legate", he in turn was assisted by no less than six "Tribunes". These were men usually drawn from the Romes upper social class. In camp and on the battlefield they were easily recognized by their more decorative and expensive armour. Among their many duties were general administration and management of all military camps, forts and other establishments. That also included food supply, overall security and enforcing discipline as well as ordering punishments when required. A Legate was a very senior official who acted as a deputy general to governors of provinces conquered by Ancient Rome in the 1st and 2nd Centuries BC, during the period of the republic.

In the latter half of the 1st Century BC, Julius Caesar began appointing Legates to command entire Legions in the Army.

This practice became customary under the Emperor Augustus who gave these commanders great power and influence not only over their personal areas of responsibility but also in Rome itself.

Our figure represents no particular personality but portrays a strong political soldier of wide experience and knowledge in leading a Legion in battle, protecting a Roman Province in peacetime and dealing with the trials and tribulations of Rome itself.

Lucius Aelius Sejanus rose to power under the reign of the Emperor Tiberius, the adopted son of Augustus. Sejanus was the first, but not the last, to exploit his position of Commander of the Guard to pursue his own ambitions.

He made extensive efforts to ingratiate himself with the Emperor while at the same time quietly eliminating any others including Tiberius own family, from having any connection with the Emperor himself.

Inevitably, he over-reached himself by trying to get Tiberius to make him his heir apparent.

This led to his downfall and execution but for 17 years he led the Guard and was a major power in Rome itself.

Each Legion carried two main standards, one showed a carved or cast portrait of the current emperor to remind the Legionnaires of their loyalty to him.
The other standard emblem was an 'Eagle' made from either silver or gold with thunderbolts held between its claws. This 'Eagle' standard carried by the 'Aquilifer' was the symbol of the entire Legion.
The soldier carrying the 'Eagle' usually wore a brown bearskin over his armour.
