Baron Manfred Freiherr von Richthofen and his red Fokker triplane made history in World War 1. The Fokker Dr. I was introduced on the Western Front in June 1917 and only received clearance from the General Staff after a lengthy test phase and the approval of flying ace Manfred von Richthofen. The Dr. I was the most manoeuvrable of all the aircraft used and achieved high climb speeds. With the Oberursel radial engine (110 hp) the Dr. I reached a top speed of 193 km/h and could climb to 3000 m altitude in 6 minutes. Two Spandau-MG's were installed in front of the pilot's cockpit. All pilots of Richthofen's group flew red triplanes. At the end of 1917, the Dr. I was withdrawn from the Western Front, but the red Baron continued to fly this type and achieved a total of 80 kills before it was shot down in April 1918.
