Many people say, "I already know what is right and good." Others say, "I am unsure about certain issues." And some look to role models from history or their personal lives, asking themselves how those individuals would have solved a particular problem. We frequently find ourselves in situations where it is crucial to be able to assess the consequences of our actions. This is particularly important for soldiers: they bear responsibility for others as well as for themselves and must be able to stand by their decisionsbefore superiors, subordinates, the courts, and, not least, their own consciences. Featuring texts from antiquity, the Middle Ages, the modern era, and the present day, this reader invites reflection on what is good and right. It offers prompts for self-study and encourages discussion of ethical and moral questions. The book aims to help soldiers act responsibly and in accordance with their conscience during situations of conflict and crisis. Volume 37 in the series "Potsdam Publications of the Bundeswehr Centre for Military History and Social Sciences."

From Kosovo and Bosnia to Thailand and Afghanistan, he was repeatedly confronted with death and injury. As a medic and paratrooper, he treated wounded soldiers while under fire. Amidst the devastation of the tsunami in Banda Aceh, he disinfected mass graves and fell into the hands of rebels. While fighting the Taliban, he prepared himself to use his final bullet on himself. He was forced to watch helplessly as a young Afghan girl was stoned. How could a person endure all that? He found a way out of his nightmares at the Invictus Games in The Hague. As captain of the German team, he discovered a new kind of courage and strength within himself. The Games became a turning point in his life.

They have already been deployed in wars, terrorist attacks, and political assassinations. Today, they are more relevant than ever. This book provides a comprehensive overview of biological weapons, tracing their history from the past to the present. It recounts how the Scythians used snakes to poison their arrows, how smallpox was used against the indigenous populations of the Americas during the Seven Years' War, and how Japan waged a brutal campaign of biological warfare in China before and during World War II. The book also examines the biological weapons programs of various nations: from the investments made by the USA and the Soviet Union during the Cold War and the activities of South Africas "Doctor Death" to the involvement of a Canadian Nobel laureate in biological weapons development. It also discusses the controversial theory that modern virusessuch as HIV, COVID-19, or monkeypoxmight have been engineered as biological weapons. Furthermore, the book describes the use of biological weapons by terrorist organizations and criminals. The threat posed by biological weapons is growing; advances in biotechnology and synthetic biology now make it possible to create microbial weapons far more dangerous than those of the past. The book highlights how the development of artificial intelligence and drones significantly contributes to this risk. The future use of deadlier biological weapons could result in devastating pandemics, ecological catastrophes, and potentially even genocide. Consequently, effectively addressing the threat of biological weapons at both national and international levels is of paramount importance; the book also outlines how to respond to a biological weapons attack. There is a deafening public silence regarding the danger posed by biological weapons. Written in an accessible and engaging style, this book aims to break that silence.

In the historical imagination, Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, and Napoleon Bonaparte embody the archetype of the great military commander. Viewed by their contemporaries as virtually invincible, they led extraordinary campaigns and sought to build empires destined to outlast the boundaries of their times. Although separated by vast stretches of time, the three are regarded in collective memory as the greatest representatives of the Western military tradition. What unites them is a profound understanding of the art of war and the ability to lead their troops with determination and success. On the battlefield, they knew how to identify uncertainties, anticipate their opponents' moves, and intervene at the decisive moment to alter the course of events. By comparing their military successes and strategic decisions, this volume explores the essence of leadership and the secret behind the quality that turned them into legends: charismathat personal power capable of inspiring armies and leaving an indelible mark on history.

The men who do this are not criminals; on the contrary, they are upstanding members of society. They accept the fact that their actions are illegal. For them, another value ranks higher than the law: their honor. They are willing to risk their lives for it. Yet, being drawn into a deadly fight is actually a mark of distinction, for it demonstrates that a man belongs to the upper echelons of societyto the exclusive circle of those deemed worthy of dueling. However, this violence does not take the form of unbridled aggression; it is restrained and controlled. The combatants adhere to rulesspecifically, those of a chivalrous contest governed by the code of the duel. What appears to be a bizarre, archaic ritual was, in fact, a part of social reality well into the twentieth century. The first part of the book outlines the historical and social background of the duel, describes the various modes of combat, and addresses prohibitions and criticisms. The duel is also a major theme in European literature, which portrays aspects that a cultural-historical account cannot capture. Literature depicts the inner lives of those facing a fight to the deaththeir motives, thoughts, feelings, and fears, as well as their behavior in an extreme situation. The tension, sensationalism, tragedy, illicit nature, and fateful significance of these affairs of honor provided rich material for drama and narrative fiction. The second part of this book undertakes something never before attempted: a comprehensive account of the duel in literature.

Thus, mastering maritime deterrencecreating and displaying naval power to discourage an attackis vital for peace.
Conventional Maritime Deterrence revives and updates our understanding of how deterrence at sea differs from its terrestrial counterpart. Adam Lockyer examines four types of maritime deterrence strategies: offensive sea control, defensive sea control, offensive sea denial, and defensive sea denial. These fleet operations showcase what crises a nation can plan to respond to, how it can intend to respond, and the likely success of these efforts. Lockyer conducts analysis of cases throughout history and also takes a deeper look at the US Maritime Strategy from the late Cold War in the Pacific, ultimately finding that the credibility of conventional maritime deterrence rests upon what a naval power can be seen to do rather than what it can do.
This book will provide policymakers, naval officers, and scholars of international relations with insight into maritime deterrence for both current and future contests.

And indeed, women have been serving in European armed forces for centuries. But they are hardly ever remembered. At best, individual exceptional heroines - Amazons in men's uniforms - have a place in the collective memory, while the history of the many female troopers, auxiliaries, nurses and soldiers actively involved in the war effort is largely forgotten. The mass military service of women in the two world wars has also been largely suppressed from the culture of remembrance. Karen Hagemann has now finally closed this "memory gap".

The renowned historian takes a comprehensive and comparative look at the military service of women in European wars since 1600, using numerous testimonies from herself and others to bring women's experiences of war to life, describing how these women were perceived in their respective times and asking why it has never been possible to adequately remember their active role in the military and war across national and systemic borders. A chapter on the current situation concludes this unique fundamental work, which will also be indispensable for women in the current debates on compulsory military service.

It was the legions of the Romans who conquered a vast empire on the Mediterranean, the divisions of Napoleon who subjugated Europe and the "Poor Bloody Infantry" of the Americans, British and Soviets who occupied it under the rule of the National Socialists. New weapons may change the tactics of warfare, they may increase the effectiveness of infantry or complicate their operating conditions. Artillery may conquer, as they said in the First World War, but infantry occupies. And only what you occupy in war can be claimed in peace.
This volume provides a concise account of the history of the infantry from early history to the present day. It analyses their equipment, tactics and operational conditions. While the emergence of new technology such as artillery, aircraft, tanks and most recently drones has always been attributed a revolutionary effect on warfare, infantry is the great constant. New weapons offer opportunities and pose threats, but infantry will always adapt to these challenges.

It was the Roman legions that conquered a mighty empire in the Mediterranean, and the divisions of Napoleon's Grande Armée which secured French rule over Europe. Ultimately, it took the "poor bloody infantry" of the combined American, British and Soviet armies to rid the same continent of the scourge of Nazism. New weapons may alter the tactics applied in warfare, they can increase the impact of infantry, or impede its use on the battlefield. While artillery may conquer, infantry holds, a notion which was not lost on the men fighting the First World War. It is only the areas thus occupied that can serve as pledges in a future peace agreement.
The present new volume provides a concise history of infantry from ancient times to the present, analysing equipment, tactics and employment in battle. While revolutionary impact has frequently been attached to new technological developments such as artillery, tanks, planes and, lately, drones, infantry has always proved a constant and often enough decisive factor in war. The inherent tactical potential of new weapons will always provide new opportunities and threats, but infantry will continue to prevail.

Yet this could change in an instant. Even a simple power outage can become a critical test of our resilience. Out in the wilderness, too, a minor mishap can have serious consequences: a sudden storm or a sprained ankle is all it takes to turn a relaxing outdoor excursion into a major crisis. Sooner than you might imagine, you could find yourself in a situation where you have to spend the night outdoors and build a fire. This book provides the 100 most essential skills to help you prepare effectively, identify risks, avoid hazards, and remain capable of taking action when it matters most. Between 1790 and 1930, over six million Germans sought their fortune in the so-called New WorldAmerica. The hardships endured by the first travelers during the age of sailing shipson their odyssey toward a better lifewere of an almost unimaginable magnitude, demanding every ounce of endurance from them and their families. Providing sustenance during these weeks-long journeys proved particularly challenging. Relying on the meager rations provided aboard the sailing vesselssupplemented by their own small caches of provisionstravelers strove to prepare dishes that were as appetizing and nutritious as possible from the few available ingredients, in order to sustain their strength until their arrival on the distant continent. Bettina Meister has spent years researching exactly what the ships galley yieldedand what was served on bare wooden tables below deck in the flickering light of oil lampsunearthing a collection of surprisingly good recipes. Allow yourself to be whisked away on a culinary journey back to the pioneer era.

Yet in today's worldamidst ongoing and newly erupting warsarchaeology must also address the precariousness and long-term consequences of armed conflict for all parties involved. This edited volume examines how the short- and long-term effects of warfare manifest in the archaeological recordfrom prehistory through the Middle Ages. For the vanquished, the consequences may include nutritional deficiencies, health impairments, physical trauma, and increased mortalityaspects that can be discerned in bioarchaeological evidence. Victorious communities, conversely, may benefit from plundered resources, potentially leading to prosperity and improved living conditions. Moreover, conflicts can trigger migrationswhether through violent expulsion or deportationphenomena that, while well-documented in historical texts, are more difficult to trace in eras lacking written records. Finally, warfare can leave settlements and landscapes in ruins, thereby rendering them less habitable. To comprehend the trauma of war, it is essential to investigate its physical and material dimensions. Through case studies drawn from prehistoric Iberia, Ancient Egypt and Nubia, Roman Britain and Pannonia, the "Barbaricum" of the Middle Danube, the Late Antique Balkans and Eastern Mediterranean, Viking-Age Scandinavia, and medieval Anatolia, this volume explores whoin the wake of a conflictemerges as a winner and who becomes a victim.

This historical study presents an argument of unparalleled rigor. It explains how and why, since the 19th century, this East Asian island nation catapulted itself into modernityspecifically by adopting Prussian-German models in every sphere, from military organization to its authoritarian constitutional structure. This strategic course of action had fatal consequences: allied with Hitlers Germany, the Empire initiated the Second World War with the attack on Pearl Harbor. Following its defeat in 1945, however, it rose to become an economic giant just as rapidly as the Federal Republic of Germany. And now, in the 21st century, these two aging nations are once again grappling with very similar challenges. They must navigate a world in which the post-war order is crumblingand with it, the very foundation of German-Japanese success.

As a pioneer and practitioner of total war, Sherman knew better than most what warfare had evolved into by the mid-19th century: a devastating, all-consuming enterprise that no longer targeted armies alone, but also aimed at societies and economies in order to break a nation's will to fight. Indeed, this is the central narrative of warfare over the past two hundred yearsfrom Napoleons massive armies sweeping across Europe and Shermans March through Georgia, to the area bombing campaigns of the Second World War and the threat of nuclear annihilation. In *War Is Hell*, Daniel Long traces the rise of total war across two centuries of bloody conflict, paying particular attention to its impact on the civilian populationthose people drawn ever deeper into armed conflicts as war itself assumes an increasingly lethal form. While the roots of total war reach back to antiquity, it only gained massive momentum with the industrialization of the world in the early 19th century. It is the story of Napoleon and Sherman, of the Indian Wars on the American prairies, of the "Rape of Belgium" in the First World War and the Nanjing Massacre of 1937, as well as of the bombing raids on Japanese and German cities during the Second World War. In the years since 1945, the number of large-scale wars has indeed declined; yet the "small wars" that have taken their placeand have since proliferatedentangle the civilian population no less deeply and no less devastatingly in the unfolding conflict. Vietnam, Cambodia, the Iran-Iraq War, Bosnia and Kosovo, Rwanda, and Ukraine serve as a warning to us: warfare remains "total"and the human toll remains high.

It encompasses our understanding of the Earth and the universe, as well as of nature, society, and the role of humanity within them. A worldview thus serves as a "lens" through which reality is perceived, interpreted, and explained. It varies depending on region, era, and cultural conceptions. Drawing upon historical sources from Klosterneuburg Abbey, this book opens up perspectives on the world that - from a contemporary standpointappear strikingly unfamiliar: maps, scientific treatises, travel diaries, and accounts of pilgrimages and expeditions reveal how those within the monastery walls followed events with keen interest, thereby constructing their own image of the worldalways in dialogue with the cultural and scientific developments of their time.

It is the most detailed study of spurs availablefrom the original thorn spurs to the wheel spur and up to the spurs that were in use at the time the work was written.

Featuring contributions from early-career and established scholars, the book analyzes the complex dynamics of these border regions in the Middle East and Southeast Europe. It explores how local communities coped with imperial rule, national borders, and quarantine systems, revealing the intersections of public health, military strategies, and border security. By focusing on these peripheral areas, the book offers new insights into the imperial legacy, state-building, and the challenges of governance in the (post-)Ottoman world.

It perfectly captures what they simply cannot do without. While the meals of ordinary soldiers were usually modest, military leaders feasted like princes, befitting their rank. This book spans from antiquity to the end of the Napoleonic Wars and presents the favorite dishes of famous military leaders, from Ramses II to the Duke of Wellington, which readers can recreate at home.
