It is based on a publication by Johann Ernst Meyer from that period entitled: The State of the Royal Prussian Army in 1786 and a Brief History of this Army from its Foundation to the Present Day. This edition contains all the uniform illustrations from the original volume and a foreword in three languages: English, German and Italian. The uniforms include all those of the Prussian army, starting with the infantry, line infantry, guard and fusilier regiments, cavalry regiments in all their specialisations, the artillery and special units, the garrison regiments, the corps of senior officers, etc. This work is therefore extremely useful for all lovers of uniforms and costumes, but also for model makers and wargamers and, of course, for those interested in history.

Although the war was mostly fought far away from Saxony in Poland and Pomerania, the city of Torgau was in a constant state of alert, as the local Elbe bridge made it a strategically important target in the event of a Swedish invasion. In the early modern period, the city and the military were much more closely intertwined than they are today, both in times of war and peace. Towns served as garrisons for regiments, whose soldiers were quartered in the homes of citizens. At the same time, the town served as a recruitment center, providing men for service in the militia and the regular army. The town's economy benefited from the establishment of a factory in the Old Chancellery, which produced uniform fabrics for the army. Torgau was also a camp for Swedish prisoners of war during the war. Based on extensive research in the Torgau City Archives and the Saxon State Archives in Dresden, this volume paints a detailed picture of life in the garrison town of Torgau at the beginning of the 18th century. Volume 14 of the series Schriften des Torgauer Geschichtsvereins (Writings of the Torgau Historical Society).

Peter Stephan, on the other hand, describes the crooked Fritz as the systematic inventor of the Prussian state, who symbolised his understanding of himself and his state in the art and architecture of his capital, Berlin. His elegantly written biography is also a fascinating rediscovery of a forgotten Prussia that had no chance under Frederick's successors. Even his father, the Great Elector, did not have much faith in his physically disabled, highly sensitive son, and posterity associated the Berlin Palace he built, a major work of European Baroque architecture, primarily with the name of the architect Andreas Schlüter. For generations of historians, Prussian history actually began with his successor, the Soldier King Frederick William I. Peter Stephan thoroughly revises this image on the basis of years of research. He describes how Frederick, as Elector of Brandenburg, systematically planned his coronation in Prussia, thereby linking the grand design of a Prussian state based on tolerance, culture and the rule of law. In doing so, he masterfully succeeds in bringing works of art such as the equestrian statue of the Great Elector, the Armoury and the Berlin Palace to life as eloquent testimonies to the life and political ideology of the first and most misunderstood Prussian king.

His understanding of battles, soldier movements and field fortifications was based on his own eyewitness observations. His works were indispensable studies in their day, and his great work was translated into English by members of the Craufurd family, including the famous Black Bob Robert Craufurd, who became famous for the Peninsular War. Continuing Tielke's great study, this second volume deals with the Russian campaign against the Prussians, including the Battle of Zorndorf and the Siege of Colberg in 1758. Further chapters deal with the Austro-Russian campaign of 1761 and the Pomeranian campaign of 1761.

Frederick II of Prussia made himself one of the great military leaders through these victories. Prussia's military prowess became legendary. The Franco-German army, which was decisively defeated at Rossbach, and the Austrian army, which was routed at Leuthen, were not only larger and had a greater proportion of professional soldiers, but the Austrians had also defeated the Prussians only shortly before. So how could they be so humiliated?

After the Peace of Westphalia, several German states developed a disciplined 'military' that produced outstanding armies. Germany provided mercenary troops for major and minor powers throughout Europe, and the military state, usually epitomised by Prussia, became a crucial part of German history. However, "Germany" appeared weak and was divided into a multitude of states that constantly faced a hostile environment created by belligerent great powers. Furthermore, the German "militaries" were the result of a system of collective security, internal conflict and resolution that allowed a variety of political traditions to co-exist relatively harmoniously. This system sought to protect "Germany" from formidable attacks without making it a threat to the security of its neighbours. In contrast to the political culture of later German states, that of the Empire was defensive by nature, favouring peace over war in both domestic politics and foreign relations. This study is the first to deal with the armies of the Holy Roman Empire in a single book, based on extensive research in archives throughout Germany and utilising previously unpublished iconography. This third and final volume of Bruno Mugnai's monumental work on the German armies of the late 17th century examines how armies recruited troops and provides a further overview of the armed forces of the myriad states within 'Germany'. The author examines the conflicts in which the German armies were involved in the second half of the 17th century. The book concludes with extensive appendices containing a wealth of material on orders of battle, regiments and the specifics of how armies recruited troops for foreign states.<br><br>Pages : 210 | Images : 10 colour plates, 60 b/w illustrations, 4 b/w maps

Admired and studied by Napoleon, he commanded the Prussian army at sixteen major battles and numerous sieges and other actions, often leading from the front. Under Frederick the Prussian Army became arguably the most feared and efficient in Europe, often defeating numerically superior forces.<br><br>Gabriele Esposito details the organization, uniforms and equipment of the various branches of service that made up the Prussian Army. Starting with the infantry, whose incredible discipline and excellent training made them the backbone of Frederick's forces he details the famous Guards and the line regiments but also the light infantry jagers and even little-known garrison and auxiliary units. Equal attention is given to the cavalry: Guards, cuirassiers, dragoons, lancers and hussars. There is also a chapter devoted to the 'technical corps' of artillery, pioneers and the like, and there are chapters on the mercenary 'freikorps' and Frederick's German allies.<br><br>The whole is lavishly illustrated with beautiful colour plates.<br><br>English text, many illustrations. 192 pages.

Yet half a century later the once-mighty forces of Frederick the Great were crushed on the fields of Jena and Auerstädt. The short War of the Bavarian Succession (1778-1779), the last war of Frederick the Great, is often considered as a first stage in the rapid decline of Prussias Ancien Régime forces.<br>However, this study takes a fresh view on this conflict. It gives a critical analysis of the strength and limitations of the Frederician war machine, before offering a narrative of this forgotten war, which, because of its lack of battles, was scoffed at by contemporaries as a "potato war", as soldiers struggled more to find food than to fight the enemy. While the war definitely revealed weaknesses within the Prussian military system, it was not necessary for Frederick to win battles and campaigns as long as he was able to achieve his political goals.<br><br>This fresh study will change our view of Prussian military effectiveness in the late-eighteenth century.

The contributions are primarily devoted to the court as an institution under the aspects of function and symbolic communication. In addition to the Prussian example, they deal with courts of the multinational Habsburg monarchy, the kingdoms of Bavaria, Italy and Sweden, as well as the court of Napoleon III and the imperial court in Japan.<br><br>Also critically discussed are possible integration achievements of the monarchies, as shown, among other things, in concepts of newly designed palace landscapes or in the travelling activities of monarchs and princes. All this is preceded by empirically based statements of ancient historical and early modern court research, embedded in court research since Norbert Elias.

He was, in the 18th century, the monarch of a German state, Prussia, which had few advantages and many small territories scattered from the east (East Prussia) to the west on the Rhine (Duchy of Kleve). His was a relatively small nation surrounded by France, Austria, Sweden and Russia, all hostile to Prussian interests.<br><br>These two volumes discuss the beginnings of Frederick II's reign and the development he further brought to the army. Having succeeded his father on 31 May 1740, he was able to take advantage of the difficult position in which Austria found itself, due to the thwarted succession of Maria Theresa, and went to war with his new army, intending to take possession of Silesia. With the Treaty of Breslau (11 June 1742) he obtained sovereignty over almost all of Silesia and the county of Glatz.

This comprehensive biography pays new tribute to his life and work, in particular: Mentzel's multifaceted work from a medical-historical perspective as personal physician to the Great Elector up to his collaboration on the first Brandenburg Medical Code; his botanical work with preliminary work on plant systematics, research into native plant species and opening up new plant worlds outside Europe; Mentzel's bibliographical work in Berlin and first Latin-Chinese dictionary as well as efforts to open up Chinese history and culture.<br><br>As the 57th member of the oldest German Academy of Natural Scientists Leopoldina, Christian Mentzel also contributed to the development of scientific standards and the profiling of the first European scientific journal "Miscellanea Curiosa" from 1675. He had lively scientific exchanges with great scholars of his time - such as G. W. Leibniz. The first Mentzel biography of the 21st century on the occasion of the 400th birthday, following important works on medical history by Walter Artelt and Rolf Winau, is intended to contribute to a broader view of Mentzel as well as his time in the 17th century. Volume 1 of the series "Edition Mentzeliana".
