The flight of thousands of Prussians and Saxons in the autumn of 1806, following the disaster at Jena and Auerstedt, lasted three weeks and unfolded between Saalburg and Prenzlau, and further west as far as Lübeck and Ratekau. The Russian-German Legion was formed by the Russians in 1812 from mainly German "volunteers" before being transferred to British pay. The Saxony-Weimar Sharpshooter Battalion, armed with rifles, fought against the Prussians at Auerstedt in 1806. In 1807, the contingent formed the III Battalion/4th Rhine Confederation Regiment "Saxon Duchies", which fought in Tyrol (1809), in the Peninsular War (1810-11), at Vilnius (1812) and in the defence of Danzig (1813). The Thuringian battalion, taken prisoner of war, fought against Napoleon at Leipzig (1813). Also included are chapters written by Stephen Summerfield on uniform and standard details of the formations covered.

The "Ranking List of the Royal Prussian Army for the Year 1804" published in this publication is interesting from the publisher's point of view for the following reasons: There is a manoeuvre disposition for the autumn manoeuvres of the Prussian Army in September 1804 (order no. 5/10368). This is a manuscript by the Field Marshal General and Governor of Berlin, Wichard Joachim Heinrich von Möllendorff (1724-1816), one of the outstanding personalities of the old Prussian army.

Möllendorff is known from the history books as the legendary "Captain of Leuthen", the officer whose conduct in this battle of the Seven Years' War contributed significantly to its success, thus attracting the attention of Frederick the Great and establishing his own rise. Born in 1724, Möllendorff lived under four and served under three Prussian kings. He was able to witness and help shape almost a century of Prussian-German military history, witnessing the actions of the Prussian army in the First and Second Silesian Wars, the Seven Years' War, the War of the Bavarian Succession, in which he commanded an army corps, and as commander-in-chief in the First Coalition War against France in 1792-97, he experienced the downfall of the old Prussian army in the 1806-07 war, the army reform, the revival of the New Prussian army and the wars of liberation in 1812-15, the rise and fall of Napoleon I., until he died as a canon in Havelberg in 1816 at the ripe old age of 92. The manoeuvre disposition mentioned is not only a rare autograph, but also a historically relevant document. For the manoeuvre negotiations described vividly demonstrate the standstill in development known from literature that had occurred since the death of Frederick the Great, which ultimately led to the catastrophe of Jena and Auerstedt. The autograph is published by the editor simultaneously with the reprint of the ranking list for 1804 as a separate publication. For the reception and analysis of the document, the use of the ranking list of the Royal Prussian Army for the year 1804 is a useful aid. It can also be an indispensable aid for those interested in military history in connection with other documents and writings of the period.
