A B-26 Marauder bomber crew typically consisted of a pilot, co-pilot, bombardier or navigator, and machine gunners manning the dorsal turret and rear position. In the European Theater of Operations, B-26 Marauders struck strategic targets deep inside German territorymissions that became routine over time.

These combat missions were brutally demanding. Resistance over enemy territory was fierce and deadly. Long-range flights at high altitude, precise navigation, enemy fighter attacks, and relentless anti-aircraft fire demanded excellent training, tight coordination, and iron discipline. Combat losses were severe.

A pilot from the 320th Bombardment Group later recalled one mission: The anti-aircraft fire was extremely intense. Ahead of me, I saw a B-26 in formation take a direct hit. It broke in half as if it were a toy. Meanwhile, we seemed to be dragged through hell by a hurricane of flak bursts. Almost every B-26 in our formation was hit by fragments from anti-aircraft explosions. Despite the losses and hardships, the pilots of the B-26 Marauder carried out their duty with honor and made a worthy contribution to victory.

Serial production of the HP.52 Hampden B.Mk.I bomber began in the spring of 1938, and the first aircraft reached operational units by the autumn of the same year. With the outbreak of the Second World War, these bombers were actively employed by the Royal Air Force and bore the burden of the early combat operations.

By late 1941, the use of the HP.52 Hampden as a torpedo bomber was proposed. The concept of employing this aircraft for maritime strike operations had been considered as early as 1935, during the design stage, when it was planned to widen the fuselage to accommodate two torpedoes. However, wartime conditions demanded simpler and more practical solutions that did not require major structural changes to the fuselage.

The designers succeeded in installing a single Mk.XII torpedo in the lower section of a standard HP.52 Hampden without significant modifications. Converting the bomber into a torpedo bomber required the reconfiguration of the ventral gunners position, modification of the rear part of the bomb bay, changes to the position of the movable bomb bay doors, and the installation of a special torpedo mounting.

The take-off weight of the torpedo bomber increased by approximately 450 kilograms, while the aircraft retained the ability to carry bombs under the wingsthe bomb racks for two 227?kg bombs remained in place. In total, 144 aircraft were converted to the torpedo bomber role; this modification was designated HP.52 Hampden TB.Mk.I.

The torpedo bombers served with five squadrons of RAF Coastal CommandNos. 144, 408, 415, 489, and 455 Squadronswhich operated over the waters of the North Sea and the Arctic.

The first B-26 bomber took flight on November 25, 1940, and entered service with the US Air Force in February 1941. The B-26 Marauder was a high-wing aircraft with a spacious fuselage and a five-person crew (later expanded to seven). Throughout its operational life, the design was continuously refined to improve flight and combat performance. In 1943, the wing area and tail were enlargedthese modifications remained standard through the end of production. Demand from the US Air Force far exceeded the capacity of Martins Middle River plant in Baltimore, Maryland. In March 1941, production expanded to a second facility in Omaha, Nebraska. All aircraft built there were designated B-26Cstructurally identical to the B-26B with minor variations. The B-26C-45 became the most produced version, with 359 units manufactured.

The Do 217K-2 was developed as a version of the Do 217K-1 bomber designed to carry the Ruhrstahl SD 1400 X guided bomb, also known as Fritz-X. The key modification was an extended wingspan of nearly 25 meters necessary to handle the significantly increased combat load, as a single guided bomb weighed 1570 kg. To preserve flight range, an additional 1160-liter fuel tank was installed in the forward bomb bay. Two special racks for the Fritz-X bombs were mounted under the wings between the fuselage and engines. The German company Ruhrstahl A.G. developed the bomb, designed by engineer Max Kramer. It was an armor-piercing glide bomb for attacking armored naval targets, with flight control from the aircraft via radio waves. The carrier bomber had to fly at an altitude of at least 4 km. The Fritz-X carried 360 kg of explosives and could penetrate 130150 mm of armorsufficient to destroy even battleships. The most famous use of the Do 217K-2 bomber (crew commander Major Bernhard Jope) and the Fritz-X bomb was the sinking of the Italian battleship Roma on September 9, 1943.

In the second half of 1940, the Wehrmacht began deploying the 2 cm Flak 38 anti-aircraft gun. Its reliable design and high rate of fire made it effective for close-range air defense. Beyond engaging aircraft, the gun could also target lightly armored vehicles.

A full combat crew consisted of five soldiers, though four or even three could operate it effectively. To enhance mobility, the 2 cm Flak 38 was mounted in the cargo beds of various wheeled and half-tracked vehicles. One such vehicle was the half-track version of the widely used Wehrmacht truck V3000S, designated Sd.Kfz.3b (also known as V3000S/SSM).

The guns could be installed on special platforms or directly in the cargo bed. To enable firing, the vehicles side panels were folded down or removed entirely. This configuration transformed the vehicles into self-propelled anti-aircraft guns, which the German Army used for both air defense and infantry fire support.

At the beginning of the Second World War, German military leadership did not prioritize specialized air-defense fighter aircraft. They believed anti-aircraft artillery would serve as the primary defense against aerial attacks on the Reich. However, large-scale nighttime raids by British aviation revealed that heavy anti-aircraft guns could not effectively protect ground targets. This necessitated specialized night-fighter units and a distinct tactical approach.

Since no aircraft were specifically designed for night combat at the time, the Luftwaffe initially used standard combat aircraft painted in dark colorssuch as the Bf 109E-4 operated by Nachtjagdgeschwader 1 (the 1st Night Fighter Wing). For long-range interception of British bombers over British territory, they employed a specially converted Do 17 bomber designated the Do 17Z-10 Kauz II. The aircraft featured an infrared searchlight to help locate enemy aircraft in the night sky.

There are also documented cases of Fw 189 A-1 aircraft being used as night fighters after special modifications, including the installation of FuG 212 radar and an additional MG 151 cannon mounted for forward and upward firing.

In 1961, the U.S. Army announced a tender for a light reconnaissance and liaison helicopter under the LOH (Light Observation Helicopter) program. The Hughes OH-6 Cayuse won the competition, making its first flight in 1963. Serial production began in 1966, with 1,434 helicopters built in total. McDonnell Douglas later acquired the production rights and began manufacturing its own variant, the MD 500 Defender. One modification, the MD 530MG, became the basis for the MH-6J Little Bird. This helicopter was designed for the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (160th SOAR), known as the Night Stalkers.

The MH-6J features a single-rotor configuration with a tail rotor, powered by a single turboshaft engine and equipped with skid landing gear. Its aluminum alloy fuselage houses the pilots seats in the forward cockpit section. The avionics compartment sits beneath the cockpit floor, while fuel tanks occupy the rear section.

The helicopter can carry cargo weighing up to 900 kilograms. However, the MH-6J Little Bird most commonly transports four troops seated on two special benches mounted on the fuselage sides.

The 160th SOAR frequently deploys these helicopters in special operations worldwide. The MH-6 Little Bird, along with its armed variant the AH-6, has rightfully become one of the calling cards of this legendary military unit.

The training of future Luftwaffe pilots began at a special flying school, also referred to as the A/B School. Cadets received 100150 flight hours, starting with a few hours of instruction with an instructor, followed by approximately 25 hours devoted to practicing take-offs, landings, and aerial maneuvers. During training, instructors closely observed the cadets, and based on their evaluations, decisions were made regarding the pilots future specializationfighter, bomber, or reconnaissance.

Flights were conducted on light training aircraft, but the schools also included both outdated and modern combat aircraft, including the Hs 123 biplanes. Serial production of these aircraft began in September 1936. The primary role of the biplane was to provide close air support to ground forces, for which it was equipped with two synchronized machine guns and the ability to carry bombs with a total weight of up to 450 kg.

Hs 123s were assigned to air groups for direct infantry support and were also widely used by training units. The aircraft featured a simple design but was distinguished by reliability and good flight performance, which allowed it to remain in Luftwaffe service almost until the end of the war.
