He was eventually crowned emperor in Rome the first western Roman emperor in 300 years and the precursor of the line of Holy Roman Emperors which continued into the 19th century. Conquering and Christianizing much of western and central Europe, he is considered Europae Pater, the Father of Europe. His political, military, religious, and educational reforms and statutes would inspire those after him, continuing to shape Europe, and the West, for generations.

Headquartered on the Temple Mount, they offered protection to pilgrims throughout the Outremer and were often the shock troops in many battles of the Crusades. While beginning as an impoverished organization (their symbol shows two knights on a single horse), this soon changed as the order amassed great wealth and even engaged in lending, which perhaps was the cause of their eventual downfall. They were guided in all things by the rule of their order, the Latin Rule, which even dictated that they must at all times wear their famous dress, a white surcoat with a red cross.

Its name came from its soldiers grey military uniforms. 54 men served in the first company under Captain Thomas H. Breece and 68 men in the second company under Captain Robert C. Morris. These men, as well as several companies of Texicans who had recently arrived, were eager to face the Mexican Army directly at the Alamo. 23 Greys would die at the Battle of the Alamo. The Greys would also fight and die at the Siege of Bexar, the Goliad Campaign, and the Battle of San Jacinto.

In 1833 the official title of the United States Regiment of Dragoons was established replacing various army ranger experiments. Dodge would serve as Colonel. One of his captains was Nathan Boone, son of Daniel Boone. The dragoon regiment was the fourth mounted regular army unit in United States Army history, not including the American Revolution Continental Dragoons. He was an Indian fighter, most noted for his 1835 peace mission commissioned by President Andrew Jackson, who had called out the U.S. Dragoons to assist.

In 1754, Washington led a surprise attack on a small French force at Jumonville Glen in the Ohio Country, which is considered the first major conflict of the French and Indian War. Following the Jumonville Glen skirmish, Washington constructed a small fort called Fort Necessity where he was later forced to surrender to French forces after a battle. Despite the surrender at Fort Necessity, Washingtons experience inthe French and Indian War provided him with valuable combat knowledge and leadership skills that would be crucial in the American Revolutionary War.

While he never ruled a truly united England it was his lifes work to bring the kingdoms together by defending against the Danes and their raids and encroachments, building alliances with neighboring Mercia and Wales, and building defensive works throughout the kingdom. While an eventually united England is perhaps his most famous legacy, it is the intellectual renaissance that he propelled (he is known to have translated Boethius, Augustine, and to have promoted the learning of "such books as are the most needful for all men to know") that probably shaped the nature of the England to come as much as any of his acts. To this day, no other English monarch has equaled his achievements or has ever surpassed him in the right to be called "the Great."

Generally, these battalions worked in depots and stores doing administration and support work, enabling more able-bodied soldiers to campaign. In December 1806, the 10th Royal Veteran Battalion was established on the Isle of Wight for service in Canada with the promise of land in Canada upon their retirement or the battalions disbandment. The 10th Royal Veteran Battalion arrived in Quebec the following year with a full complement of officers and 600 other ranks and were dispersed to various forts in Canada. When the War of 1812 broke out, the 10th RVB serving at Fort St. Joseph went into active service crossing Lake Huron in July of 1812 to capture Fort Mackinac. The following year members participated at River Raisin and the failed assault on Fort Stephenson.
