This book analyses the use of mounted troops from prehistoric times to recent conflicts in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. In contrast to many military history treatises that claim to identify a decline of cavalry over time in favour of modern infantry, Alexander Querengässer argues that only modern motor vehicles were able to replace cavalry. The book illuminates the diverse historical uses of cavalry, analyses conditions of deployment, the role of geographical and climatic factors in their use, and developments in equipment and tactics. Military and Warfare in Europe 1300-1815.
In the half-century between 1300 and 1815, European military affairs changed in many ways. The late medieval knight was supplanted by the mercenary and the war entrepreneurship of the lansquenet period was finally replaced by the standing army. These changes were accompanied by technical developments, such as the advent of firearms and the emergence of specialised sailing warships. Again and again during this period, the military sought innovations of a technical and tactical nature that would revolutionise the nature of warfare. Such a "military revolution" eventually led to the dominance of European military affairs throughout the world.
This volume takes a critical stance on this concept of a "military revolution" and argues that changes occurred only slowly and over a longer period of time and that military developments were characterised by long-lasting continuities instead of drastic caesurae. He illuminates the diverse developments in European military affairs, attempting to look not only at the supposed great powers of their time - Spain in the 16th, France in the 17th and Prussia in the 18th century - but also at developments in small states. "Military Evolution" offers a fascinating overview of half a century of European military history, recounts significant battles, presents the great and the small armies and fleets of their time, and provides astonishing new insights into military efficiency.

A cultural history of the uniform from the late Middle Ages to the First World War.
Until the introduction of camouflage uniforms, the "colourful skirt" dominated the appearance of Western armies. Originally designed for economic reasons, uniforms in the Baroque era served to abolish the individuality of the soldier and to create an esprit de corps bound to the association, to distinguish the soldier from the civilian community, as well as for princely representation. However, pre-modern manufacturing practices, from the possibility of dyeing fabrics uniformly to the processing by different tailors, undermined this ideal of a uniform appearance of the military just as quickly as the demands of a campaign, in which uniforms had to be worn out and supplemented by all kinds of garments.
This book attempts to illuminate the history of the colourful skirt from its origins to the present day from various perspectives, asking about its materiality, its function, the limits of uniformity, the softening of a uniform character, the symbolic character, fashionable forms of expression and influences and much more. It is a cultural history of the uniform that goes far beyond fashionable aspects.

Industrialisation in the 19th century brought quantum leaps in weapons technology and the overall development of the Western military. While the armies at Waterloo in 1815 still fought with flintlock muskets and muzzle-loading cannons, a hundred years later in the First World War mass armies faced each other with long-range multi-loading rifles, machine guns and rapid-fire guns. This advance in weapons technology is at the same time held responsible for the fact that European colonial empires in Africa and Asia reached their zenith. Apart from the colonial conflicts, however, the 19th century between Waterloo and the First World War is regarded as a peaceful epoch of conflicts limited in time and space.

This book aims to present the military developments in the Western world in the 19th century and to question existing patterns of interpretation. It shows that the first half of the 19th century was much more conflictual than often portrayed, both in Europe and on the American continents, where new Western-style states emerged and fought long wars with each other. The volume also questions the role of modern weaponry in the conquest of Western colonial empires and makes clear that improvements in logistics and communications were perhaps even more important. It also sheds new light on the common portrayal of the First World War by comparing it with other contemporary Western conflicts, such as the Mexican Civil War, the Balkan Wars or the Russian Civil War.
"Western Warfare 1775-1923" is a compact and complex account of a period of conflict and military innovation that sheds new light on many developments.

Since the invention of black powder and the development of large cannons, artillery has been considered a gamechanger of global military history. It spelled the end for knights and castles, both of which were unable to resist its powerful impact, and it ushered in radically new warship designs, whose firepower changed the face of sea warfare forever. Artillery was seen as a vital component in the military rise of Europe, with whose armies and navies Asian, African and American native forces were unable to compete. While such ideas continue to exist, the present volumes aim is to approach the history of artillery on a broader scale by taking global developments into account and putting them into perspective. It begins by examining the mechanical artillery of antiquity with its catapults and stone-throwers. The development of the cannon from a cumbersome and unreliable bombard into a modern high-tech weapon was a long process that took centuries to complete. The efficiency of the new weapon was highly dependent not just on improved production techniques but also on transport and logistics, and on increasingly lethal and destructive ammunition. And although artillery has been considered an indispensable part of any army for five hundred years, it remained an auxiliary weapon for a long time until mass deployment of fast-firing, large-calibre, guns during the First World War made artillery the true queen of battlefields.
Alexander Querengässers new book gives the interested reader an innovative overview of the history of artillery which appreciates developments both inside and outside Europe. It seeks to examine the many factors which proved decisive for its consistently improving efficiency from ancient times right to the battlefields of the present. Though the dynamics of the Congo Crisis have received, and continue to receive, a good deal of literary and scholarly attention, missing from the canon of work on military forces in the Congo is a study of the Force Publique, a paramilitary police force established by King Léopold II to secure the Congo Free State and to protect a vast geographical swath of Central Africa that had become his own personal possession following the Berlin Conference of 18841885. In many ways, the absence of any study on the origins of the Force Publique to its dissolution in 1960 means that our knowledge surrounding the history of the Belgian Congo and the modern-day Democratic Republic of the Congo is incomplete. Indeed, it is possible to trace the origins of rebellion in the Congo Crisis (19601967) back to the Batetela Rebellions that took place in the Congo Free State in the 1890s and early 1900s, and to link them with a succession of anti-Belgian popular uprisings that took place in the Congo up to the time of the Congo's independence. Moreover, a revolt by NCOs of the Force Publique was one of the sparks that plunged the Congo into crisis in early July 1960.
It would be wrong to say, nonetheless, that the geographical extent of this volume - the first of two on Belgian military forces in the Congo - is limited within the boundaries of the Congo Free State and the Belgian Congo: through descriptions of military encounters in Africa in the late 1890s and First and Second World Wars, the history of the Force Publique is extended into a study of war in the Sudan, East Africa, and in Ethiopia.
For aviation enthusiasts, this volume is significant in that its objective is to provide a history of the development of air travel to and from the Belgian Congo in addition to examining the evolution of military air forces in the colony. Again, we can link the Force Publique's air branch to the Congo Crisis as a number of its pilots and aircraft served to form the basis of the Katangan Air Force and the Congolese Air Force; two forces that were highly influential in deciding the future of the Congo after its independence.
The first volume of "Belgian Military Forces in the Congo" is illustrated throughout with photographs and includes specially commissioned colour artworks of the weapons, soldiers and aircraft of the Force Publique.

For aviation enthusiasts, this volume is important in that it not only examines the development of the military air forces in the colony, but also the development of air transport to and from the Belgian Congo. It begins with the tunic and ends with the field grey uniform. The viewer is provided with a wide range of illustrative material from this period, showing the diversity, shape, colour and change of the rank insignia. The blue tunic was introduced in Prussia with A.K.O. of 23 October 1842. Before this date, collets or tailcoats were worn. The description of the epaulettes on the tunic for enlisted men is to begin from this date and for officers from the introduction of the field epaulettes with A.K.O. of 7 June 1866. The illustrated book is intended for laymen interested in uniforms, possibly for collectors to identify epaulettes and shoulder boards, and for military historians who may be seeing some of the items for the first time. The illustrations are also intended to enable classification into a period or formation. All objects come from the extensive collection of the editors and authors, which contains many rare items from this era, but cannot be complete due to the diversity and peculiarities of the respective contingents. The present illustrated book is enlivened by contemporary photos, illustrations of functional badges, awards and sealed samples from the clothing department of the Prussian War Ministry. A work that aims to provide information and insight into epaulettes and shoulder boards, and thus a sub-area of uniform studies, will naturally also contain errors that may give rise to criticism.
