Designed as a comprehensive two-volume set, the series examines the armies of the Khmer "God-Kings" through a systematic analysis of hundreds of military depictions from the 11th and 12th centuries that have survived on the temple walls of Angkor in modern-day Cambodia. Volume 1 focuses on the structure, composition, equipment, and evolution of the Khmer armed forces themselves. Utilizing detailed photographic evidence, the book reconstructs Khmer military organization at every levelincluding command structures, royal guards, infantry, archers, naval forces, war elephants, cavalry, and logistical support units. It examines weaponry, armor, shields, helmets, military attire, banners, modes of transport, and ceremonial equipment, while simultaneously analyzing tactics, battle formations, siege warfare, recruitment, and the general military culture of the empire. Furthermore, the work explores the relationship between military power and the Khmer state, investigating how Angkors sophisticated hydraulic infrastructure and immense agricultural wealth sustained one of the largest urban agglomerations of the medieval world. At the zenith of its power, the Khmer Empire dominated vast tracts of mainland Southeast Asia, exercising its authority over a territory comparable in extent to that of the contemporary Byzantine Empire. Volume 2 expands the study to encompass the allies, tributaries, rivals, and enemies encountered by Khmer armies throughout Southeast Asia; it thus provides an unprecedented visual and military-historical portrayal of one of the greatestyet least understoodempires of the Middle Ages. Richly illustrated throughout, *Armies, Allies and Enemies of the Khmer Empire* combines archaeological evidence, military analysis, and visual reconstructions to form the most comprehensive study to date of Khmer warfare and military society.

The book features profiles of approximately 25 real-life knightsnot kings or celebrities, but "ordinary" knights for whom a surviving likeness exists, typically in the form of a tomb slab (often of astonishing realism). Timm Radts illustrations depict the armorincluding its design and ornamentationin meticulous detail, bringing these historical figures to life. Thanks to the chronological arrangement of the individual portraits, readers can clearly trace the evolution of body armor (or "knightly panoply") over time. A glossary and a map indicating the origins and spheres of activity of all the featured individuals provide readers with quick and easy reference tools. *Men in Blech* reveals the origins of our modern imagery of knights while simultaneouslythrough its contemporary illustrationsengaging the reader's own imagination and fantasy. A must-read for anyone interested in the Middle Ages, castles, and knights.

While most treatises on this subject remain rather superficial or rely solely on pictorial representations and a handful of well-known texts, Sean Manning additionally draws upon documents and lesser-known writings in a wide variety of languages. A large portion of this information has never before been translated into English, and a considerable part of the remaining findings was previously scattered across long-out-of-print books. The author traces the developments of that eradevelopments that evolved alongside the steady advancement of armor technology and military requirements, yet were equally subject to the whims of fashion. In doing so, the book covers not only noble knights but also other men-at-arms and common soldierspresented in a highly accessible manner that avoids excessive technical jargon, while simultaneously dispelling common misconceptions and clichés. This meticulously researched volume is richly illustrated with numerous line drawings and color photographs, drawing primarily upon primary sources such as medieval manuscripts, paintings, and funerary monuments.

Between the 15th and 17th centuries, Albanian soldiers wrotein blood and with the swordsome of the most intense chapters of European and Mediterranean history. Moreno Pedrinzani takes us on an extraordinary journey through the lives of men who served both the Ottoman Sultan and the *Serenissima* with equal ferocity and loyalty; who crossed the Adriatic to reinvent themselves within the Italian aristocracy; and who resisted every form of hegemony without ever losing their soul. From the Venetian *Stradioti* to the national hero Skanderbeg, from guerrilla warfare in the mountains to the courts of Europe, this book restores dignity to a forgotten "armed proletariat" and reveals how the Albanian people decisively shaped the military tactics, political dynamics, and cultural identity of an entire era.

The volume presents the complete texts of ordinances issued for campaigns across a range of different theaters of warfrom Richard IIs campaign in Scotland in 1385 (the earliest for which a complete text survives) to the campaign in Ireland in 1599 under the command of Robert Devereux, the Earl of Essex. Each of these collections of ordinances is carefully contextualized within the specific campaign for which it was issued; this approach makes it possible to trace both continuities and changes in the manner in which armies were raised, organized, and deployed. "English Military Ordinances, 13851599" constitutes the first comprehensive study of the rules that governed conduct within royal English armies during a period of profound military transformation. The work vividly illustrates how systems of disciplinary control were developed and expanded in response to evolving challenges both at home and abroad.

This book offers a comprehensive look at this momentous event, shedding light not only on the invasion itself but also on the forces that shaped it and the far-reaching consequences that ensued. It begins by tracing the development of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom and the rise of the Duchy of Normandy, thereby setting the stage for the dramatic events that unfolded following the death of King Edward the Confessor. It examines the rival claims to the throne, Duke William's preparations, and the decisive Battle of Hastings. Moving beyond the conquest itself, the book explores the profound changes ushered in by Norman ruleincluding the creation of the Bayeux Tapestry, the brutal "Harrying of the North," and the groundbreaking Domesday Book. Rich in detail and illustrated with scenes from the Bayeux Tapestry, this book offers a fresh and all-encompassing perspective on how the Norman Conquest reshaped the political, cultural, and social fabric of England.

It demonstrates how members of the lower nobility shaped their surroundings through the acquisition, renovation, and use of castles, palaces, and monasteries, and how they exercised political, social, and religious roles on a supra-regional level. Using examples such as Leitzkau Castle, Goseck Castle, and Falkenstein Castle, the traces of their actions, networks, and familial connections become visible. Large-format illustrations and accessible texts make the volume equally suitable for specialists and readers interested in culture. The publication documents the current state of research and invites readers to rediscover historical developments, buildings, and lives.

When he finally ascended the English throne at the age of twenty-six, he exercised the office of kingship exactly as expected: tough on enemies and traitors, uncompromising in his demands on himself and others, steadfast in his faith, and unapproachable behind a mask of cool detachment, through which, in rare moments of calm, an artistic side shone. In the cold February of 1400, a boy walked behind the coffin of Richard II, bitterly questioning his father's decision. Why did Richard have to die? Was mercy not an option? This thirteen-year-old would one day be King of England, revered by his contemporaries, and later immortalized in literature by Shakespeare. Henry V was the statesman who understood better than anyone else of his time how to assert himself on the international stage. He is the king who, with a keen sense for the fragile relationship between monarch and people, maintains domestic harmony. He is the nerveless general who inflicts a historic defeat on France at the Battle of Agincourt and fulfills the English dream of the French crown. Fate is on his side until an infection accomplishes what many before him have tried in vain: Henry V dies at only thirty-five years old. What if?

Since antiquity, they have captivated the human imagination. While dragons are known from many cultures, with the exception of Far Eastern cultures, it is the European Middle Ages that produced the most extensive depictions of dragons and lindworms in the visual arts and various literary genres: In heroic epics, chivalric legends, and even hagiographies, these mythical creatures present a constant challenge to heroes in word and image. This book explores the function of medieval dragons and, with the help of over 100 illustrations, also depicts their appearance. A final chapter examines the survival of these monsters to the present day.

Riade, this book, titled "A Narrative of German History," is printed in A4 format due to its many, partly historical, maps and, with 64 glossy pages and 60 illustrations and maps, is very attractively presented.

They searched for it south of Merseburg and along the Unstrut River. The conclusions drawn from these studies point to the Merseburg area, where the memory of the Hungarian Wars remained alive for centuries. The former mayor of Merseburg, Brotuff, played a significant role in this search. At the end of the 19th century, Otto Küstermann placed Riade south of Merseburg, Ernst A. Fabarius near Halle, and the local historians Meyer and Größler near Ritteburg on the Unstrut. Around 1933, this discussion reignited with the participation of scholars, a commission of historians, and chroniclers of the Unstrut region. In 2009, Günter Mühlpfordt argued for a reed bed on the southeastern edge of Halle. The second chapter discusses the objective criteria of warfare. The Elster Valley wetlands, almost impassable in the early Middle Ages, occupied a key position for the Battle of Riade, for the eastward expansion of the emerging German Empire, and for the history of Merseburg. Important criteria for locating the battlefield of the Battle of Riade in 933 include the route taken by the Hungarian cavalry, where and why they split into two armies, what kind of political and military preparation enabled King Henry I to win, and what terrain conditions were necessary to prevail against a fast-moving cavalry army. These questions are answered in the volumes "Riade - The Battle" and "Riade: The Search for the Battlefield." From all this, it follows that the battlefield of "Riade" was located on the Reide River near Osendorf, and the "castle of the Thuringian Wido," mentioned in the 10th-century Wiedukind Chronicle, is to be sought in the area of ??Ammendorf-Schkeuditz-Landsberg/Reideburg.

The Kingdom of the Thuringians lasted only a mere 80 years (455531 AD), but laid the foundation for the state structures of the following centuries in Central Germany. It was one of the greatest powers in the Germanic world. Emerging only in the mid-5th century AD, its sphere of influence in the early 6th century stretched from the middle Elbe River to south of the Main River and west to the Werra Riverthe dividing line between the rival Franks (west) and the Goths (south). The Thuringians joined the alliance system of the Ostrogothic king Theodoric against the expanding Frankish kingdom. However, dynastic strife weakened their defenses. Soon after Theodoric's death (526 AD), the Thuringians were defeated by the Franks in 531 after suffering heavy defeats on their own soil. Their society was shattered, the royal family wiped out, and ethnic groups resettled. However, certain ideas survived, such as state administration and clerical legitimacy of rule.

<img src='https://www.zinnfigur.com/out/pictures/generated/product/1/390_245_75/5623_11289.jpg' border=0 align='left' hspace=5>In July 1331, a most unusual army assembled, its quarters scattered across the humble ports of Yorkshire's east coast. Its objective: the invasion of Scotland and the overthrow of the fledgling Bruce dynasty. This was a formidable task, disproportionate to the small army attempting to command it. It was an objective they would ultimately fail to achieve, though not without some spectacular successes that forever altered the balance of power in Scottish politics. The most notable of these triumphs were the Battle of Dupplin Moor and the more widely known Battle of Halidon Hill. Such unexpected victories lent credibility to their cause and ignited another decade of war. The army was largely English, but its leaders were the disinherited sons and grandsons of the once-flourishing Scottish knighthood, an alliance of related Scottish nobles who had been banished from Scotland for continuing to refuse to acknowledge Robert Bruce's claim to the throne. Although they eagerly sought the support of the reigning English king, Edward III, they were not mere puppetstheir fathers and grandfathers had been among the most ardent defenders of Scottish liberty and independence. Edward I of England had exploited the succession crisis following the death of Alexander III to thrust himself into the center of Scottish politics and force the Scottish nobility to acknowledge his claims to overlordship. The ensuing war, however, was defined as much by the struggle between rival Scottish dynasties as by the imperial ambitions of successive English kings. Parallel to the war against English overlordship in Scotland, an internal conflict raged, with various factions of the Scottish nobility vying for the throne. Both the Bruce family and the Comyn family, from which most of the exiles descended, vacillated between loyalist and collaboratorial positions in their attempts to dominate Scottish politics. The Bruces and their allies ultimately triumphed in this dual conflict, but it was a victory for the family and their faction, not for the kingdom or the nation. The return of these disinherited nobles and the war they unleashed rekindled English ambitions to annex Scotland, leading to the Second War of Scottish Independence. This book examines the history of the families from which these exiles came, as well as their conduct in both wars of independence, to offer a valuable new perspective on Scotland's historical struggle for independence and to uncover the truth about the almost forgotten civil war that so profoundly shaped Scotland.

One of them was the author's grandfather, Guardsman H. H. Smith, who rejoined the 3rd Grenadier Guards Battalion. The 3rd Grenadiers belonged to the 1st Guards Brigade and were among the first troops deployed to France as part of the British Expeditionary Force. When Hitler's troops attacked on May 10, 1940, the BEF was forced to advance into Belgium to halt the Germans at the River Dyle. On the evening of Monday, May 20, 1940, five British and two Belgian infantry divisions faced each other on a 51-kilometer front along the west bank of the River Escaut. There, General Gort intended to hold the line and fight. The following day, chaos erupted. After a devastating and protracted artillery barrage, the five opposing German divisions attempted to cross the rivers but were only able to establish temporary bridgeheads on the west bank of the Escaut at Tournai and Pecq. At Tournai, the Germans were repulsed by the Royal Norfolks. Sergeant Major George Gristock was later awarded the Victoria Cross for his "outstanding act of gallantry" that day. Lance Corporal Harry Nicholls of the 3rd Grenadier Regiment also displayed gallantry at Pecq, which likewise earned him the Victoria Cross. In both instances, the Germans were driven back. Despite the valiant resistance of his men, Gort had no choice but to withdraw once more. Holding the line along the 51-kilometer front in some of the fiercest fighting of the Blitzkrieg was a remarkable featyet, astonishingly, it is not mentioned in the official history of the campaign. In this book, researched over thirty years in collaboration with survivors and the families of the fallen, as well as the Grenadier Guards themselves, the author tells the whole story of the 1st Guards Brigade during the Dunkirk campaign and some of the first Victoria Crosses awarded in the Second World War.

Torn between the history of its various communes and that of the Dauphiné region, the medieval past of the Grésivaudan Valley encompasses vastly different situations: the communes of the upper Grésivaudan suffered for two hundred years from their border location, while at the same time already prosperous towns like Montbonnot and Montfleury led perfectly normal lives. The villages in the Belledonne massif, on the other hand, belonged to the County of Geneva for much of the period under investigation! The author has chosen to tell the story through events in order to better understand the twists and turns that shaped the destiny of this valley.

Berengar von Ernstein, whose father, Albert of Ernstein Castle, represents the power of Heinrich XII of Schwarzburg-Blankenburg as his ministerial, has many tasks to solve at the risk of his life. Above all, he tries to refute the claim that his foster sister Selda, whose mother was his wet nurse, as Reglindis, Albert's wife, died during his birth, had acquired the gold coin by evil means. The young count, son of Heinrich, a monster, repulsive and of low character, was also trying to get hold of the gold, suspecting that he was on the trail of a greater treasure. He took Selda into his power, also with the intention of assaulting her with the help of his men. Berengar and Selda are connected by a budding love, without clearly showing it. Albert von Ernstein receives the news that his son Berengar has been killed. He must defend himself in a terrible duel against Henry XII, with whom he actually has a personal connection, as far as this is possible between ministerials and lords: Henry, who is much younger, was his squire and was prepared by him for the Schwerleite, the initiation into knighthood. The duel arises from Henry's assumption that Albert wants to judge his son, the young Henry, because he considers him to be Berengar's murderer. The monk Brother Severin plays a very important role as the great teacher of the very attentive Berengar, whom he introduces to the knowledge, customs and traditions of the time with his extensive knowledge and experience. Later, another life of the monk becomes known. Finally, Henry XII sentences Selda to death by drowning in a proper trial, as she had taken possession of the gold, which was actually fool's gold (pyrite), by force. Berengar, with the help of Konrad, a promising, relatively unknown boy, escapes from captivity and thus also from the presumption of his death, and must prove Selda's innocence: Listen to me, everyone! Brother Severin raised his voice again, The girl is innocent! Berengar will prove it. Your Grace, grant a reprieve, I beg you! Henry considers, then says, I will show mercy. We will wait until the red edge of the sun has disappeared behind the Reins Mountains. Then the girl will be drowned.

The early Middle Ages hold a special fascination not only for the author. Countless publications, especially on the period of Charlemagne, suggest that the state of research is good in comparison to other early historical periods, whether archaeological or historical. However, reconstructions of events in the Saxon settlement area, primarily in north-western Germany, are somewhat more incomplete. Archaeological sources, such as the early medieval burial ground1 at Visbek-Uhlenkamp II, are therefore of crucial importance here.
