MS Duke of York was the third of the King George V class battleships to be built after a lull in battleship design and construction following the signing of the Washington Naval Treaty. The battleship was laid down on May 5, 1937 at John Brown & Company Limited, Shipbuilding & Engineering Works in Clydebank, Scotland. She was commissioned four and a half years later, on November 4, 1941.

The "Deutschland"-class ships were the first heavy vessels of the German Navy after the First World War. In Germany they were classified as "Panzerschiffe", but in other countries the term "pocket battleships" was very popular. The third and last vessel of this class was "Admiral Graf Spee". She was laid down on 1 October 1932, launched on 30 June 1934 and commissioned on 6 January 1936. During the Spanish Civil War the ship patrolled coastal waters of this country. Before the outbreak of the Second World War, on 21 August 1939 the ship steamed out for the Atlantic. From 26 September she was fighting Allied shipping, sinking nine British vessels. On the morning of 13 December "Graf Spee" encountered a group of Allied warships (the heavy cruiser H.M.S. "Exeter" and light cruisers H.M.S. "Ajax" and H.M.N.Z.S. "Achilles") near South American coast. The gun battle that ensued went to the history as the Battle of the River Plate. Both the "Exeter" and her german enemy were damaged during the course of the engagement. The commander of "Graf Spee", Kapitän zur See Hans Langsdorff decided to break off the battle and enter the nearby port of Montevideo in Uruguay. According to the international law the German corsair could not stay in a neutral port longer than 72 hours. Convinced that massive British forces were concentrating in the vicinity and hence the escape was impossible, Langsdorf decided to save the crew and scuttle the ship. On 17 December "Admiral Graf Spee" steamed to the roadstead and there the explosive charges were fired. The German ship sunk in shallow waters and her commander shot himself three days later in a hotel in Buenos Aires. The wreckage was penetrated even during the war by British divers in order to recover more valuable items and obtain information about German technology. In the post-war years many single parts of the ship were recovered.

In June 1943 the production of Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. H began in order to increase the armour piercing capabilities of its main armament. Although the new model received the modified 75-mm KwK43 L/48 tank gun, the Ausf. H was still sharing many components with the previous version. This Panzer IV version first saw combat in the summer of 1943 during the German retreat on the Eastern front. The tank proved to be quite complicated and labour-consuming in production which led to simplifying its design. As a result, the less complex Ausf. J model was introduced into production in June 1944.

The worlds first modern tank, a pioneering vehicle whose basic features can be found on todays modern tanks. FT was an undeniable success. Large number of FTs were provided to most Western front units by 1918, and they were involved in all major offensives, successfully crossing over trenches as intended, but also driving through forests. Renault produced two variants of the FT, The machine-gun model, which was more common, and a short-barreled 37 mm Puteaux SA 18 gun. Those models were defirent by their definitive Omnibus turret, multi-faceted or rounded with bent metal plates. By December 1917 3100 FTs were to be produced with the Omnibus turret, in both types. The FT had some flaws of the first series, including the radiator fan belt and cooling system problems.
In 1919 a new redesigned version was proposed by Renault, including a more powerful engine, a long-barreled Puteaux gun and additional cases fitted in their tracks. It was successfully exported throughout the world. Some of them were immediately put into action, like the Finnish and Polish versions against the Soviets. M1917: US obtained the license to start producing the Renault FT tank in America. For security reasons, the early FT were just called 6 ton tractor. Later, they were given the official designation Model 1917 6-ton light tank. This was more commonly abbreviated to just M1917. Only 64 M1917 tanks had been built by the end of the war. Ten M1917 tanks were delivered to France before World War One finished on 11th November 1918. None of them saw active service on the front line.
