On board ship, a drummers rhythm would direct the changing of the watches or beat the men to quarters. Royal Marine Drummers were first mentioned in the 1664 Convening Order, at the formation of Corps and so pride themselves as being the oldest branch in the Corps. Without doubt, groups of musicians existed in the Service before 1767, when Royal Marines Divisional Bands were formed at the naval dockyard-bases of Chatham, Plymouth, and Portsmouth and the naval gathering-point of Deal in the Downs. Marine corps of drums provided music on board ships before and during battles of the Napoleonic Wars.

The M1895 Winchester Lee Navy and M1898 Krag-Jørgensen used by the U.S. military were deemed inadequate when up against Spanish Mausers in Cuba and the Marines made the upgrade to the new M1903 as early as 1908. Within a short period of time, Marines were winning interservice matches with the rifle which began an almost cultlike reverence for the 03 Springfield. Some accounts claim that Marines began accurately engaging German soldiers at ranges of up to 800 yards. As a famous Marine Corps chronicler, Col. John W. Thomason, stated, "...the Germans were given a new experience: rifle-fire that begins to kill at 800 yards; they found it very interesting."

Its basics were a blue, wool jumper, short jacket, and flare-bottomed trousers, which were easily rolled up, essential for deck washing. The square collar, or "tar flap" was used to protect the uniform in the time when sailors wore the log hair in a queue held together by tar and was originally a separate piece. Wedge-shaped pieces of canvas sewn together with a brim rolled low was used as cover and became known as a "Dixie Cup" hat. The black silk neckerchief was primarily worn as a sweat rag but could also be used as a battle dressing. These "service dress blues," would be nicknamed "Cracker Jacks" after the popular snack treats cartoon mascot first seen in 1916.

Sailor wears the simplified version of the white service uniform, otherwise known as the "undress whites." This more formal service white uniform was a derivative of the earlier U.S.N. uniform established in 1866. The "undress whites" formed the basis for the white service dress uniform that was designed to be a summer-friendly alternative to the classic blue service dress sailor suit. Enlisted "undress" is less ornamental than the blue service dress sailor suit. This figure exhibits many of the characteristics known to exist on the U.S.N. whites worn between 1919 -41 such as the canvas twill "Dixie Cup" hat and cotton pullover V-neck jumper with squared "sailor collar." The cotton twill, flat-front trousers have a front fly, two pockets, laced-back gusset, and plain-hemmed bellbottoms.

The enlisted waist jacket is a plain sky blue wool, unlined with narrow cut sleeves, closed with nine small Waterbury Marine pattern buttons down the front. The jacket had two shoulder epaulettes fastened with small buttons, a stand up collar, two exterior pockets, and functional cuffs that were closed with one small cuff button per sleeve. This jacket was worn by the Marines at Harpers Ferry and was almost identical to the U.S. Army fatigue jacket of the period but without any trim. The 1839 forage cap, or "wheel hat," in dark blue wool with a black leather visor, saw service from late 1839 up to the mid 1840s.

Although only a few enlisted men were sketched or painted, several excellent officer portraits confirm the written descriptions of the time. Blue full-length coats with red facings and gold trim and buttons were called out in the regulations, but minor variations in the details of decoration were not unusual. Unlike the enlisted men, all of the officers dress was privately purchased from tailors, hatters, and suppliers of military ornaments. Although boots were fashionable dress for officers in this period, low quarter shoes would be just as acceptable.

The first official uniform issued to the men were actually surplus uniforms from the small U.S. Army. A special short jacket had been designed and issued to the rifleman of the Legion of the United States under Major General Anthony Wayne but when they were later reorganized into regular infantry regiments in 1796, these flank company uniforms were discontinued. The thrifty government of the period seized the opportunity to reuse these uniforms for the newly formed United States Marines. The first uniform specifically designed for the marines was introduced in 1805.

As they were granted the title "Royal" in 1802, the facings were blue with gilt buttons and lace set in pairs. A black beaver Chapeau Bras was worm with a feather plume attached just above the black leather cockade, and gilt tassels were attached at each end of the hat. When on duty a crimson silk sash was worn around the waist and a gilt gorges was worn at the neck. In 1810, epaulettes were altered to conform with the army practice of a single gold one with fringe worn on the right shoulder for junior officers, one worn on the right with bullion fringe for captains, and bullion epaulettes worn on both shoulders for senior officers.

Westmoreland, Commander, U.S. Military Assistance Command Vietnam, requested two Marine battalions to protect the Da Nang airbase from the increasing threat by the Viet Cong. By early March, the 9th Marine Expeditionary Brigade landed there and by the end of March 5,000 Marines had taken up position. By wars end in 1975 nearly 500,000 Marines would serve in Southeast Asia. This figure appears as he would have during the early stages of the war with his standard green combat fatigues, vest, M1 combat helmet and M14 rifle. From his belt hangs a three pocket pouch for fragmentation grenades, a hold over from the Second World War.

Following 1964s Gulf of Tonkin incident, their relationship with Southeast Asia changed considerably. This Marine carries the M14 rifle used during the earlier stage of the war. The M14 became the standard battle rifle for the U.S. Military in 1957 replacing the M1 Garand of World War II and Korea (the U.S.M.C. would adopt it in 1965). The rifle was of similar construction to the M1 but chambered for the .308 round with magazine extension. It had a loud report and a lot of hitting power but proved too heavy and cumbersome for the jungle environment and would be replaced in 1967 by the M16 assault rifle.

As scouts and sentries, messengers and mercy dogs, canis familiaris has been a steadfast soldier whose fidelity and fortitude knows no bounds. In WWIIs Pacific theater the United States Marine Corps used dogs to help wrest control back from the Japanese occupying forces. While many varying breeds of dog were used, the Doberman Pinscher became the official/unofficial dog of the U.S.M.C. (the Bulldog still their mascot). Many of these dogs were donated by their owners and of the 549 dogs that returned from the war, only four could not be returned to civilian life.

After defeat in the Spanish/American War, 1898, Spain relinquished claim of her Caribbean holdings. Following this, the United States proceeded to conduct military interventions in most of Central America in an extrapolation of manifest destiny. Ostensibly to reign in "warring tropical countries, lawless societies, and corrupt politicians" but also to secure the sugar and fruit trade for private U.S. companies. Because of the high degree of control these fruit companies held over the Central American countries, the term "banana republics" came into use. The armed intrusions were primarily carried out by the United States Marine Corps - this Marine is firing his Thompson Sub Machine Gun with spare drum magazines on his hips.

This Leatherneck carries the M1928 Thompson submachine gun with a 100-round drum magazine, a pouch for an additional 5, 20-round stick magazines, and an Automatic Pistol, Caliber .45, M1911A1 on his hip. The Raider battalions were disbanded on 8 January 1944. The changing nature of the war in the Pacific, i.e., large-scale amphibious assaults, negated the need for small light units that could surreptitiously strike deep into enemy territory.

In fact, with very few changes, this dress uniform has been in service the longest of any of the U.S. military branches. The tunic seen here has four pockets stitched on the outside of the jacket indicating its post war manufacture. The high, stand-up collar resembles that of the Continental Marines who wore leather collars and despite popular mythology, it was never meant to fend off sword blows - its purpose was to make the Marine hold his head up straight. The Peaked Cap, white dress cap, or "barracks/garrison cover" displays the famous Eagle, Globe, and Anchor device on the crown.

The white facings of the corps were changed to blue in accordance with the practice that all royal regiments were to wear blue facings. During the Napoleonic Wars of 1793 to 1815, the Royal Marines were present in every notable fleet and ship-to-ship action. They were at: Glorious First of June, St Vincent, Camperdown, the Nile, Copenhagen, Trafalgar, the Dardanelles, Cape Lissa, and Aix Roads. They always formed part of any cutting out excursion (the use of small boats to seize an enemy ship), and also distinguished themselves on land either serving with the army or as part of a naval brigade. The Royal Marine establishment of 1803 was 22,467 men. The addition of four artillery companies in 1805 brought the establishment to 30,000 men. Additional companies raised gave the Marines supernumerary until 1814 when the force was reduced in numbers.

In the early 18th century, many British units were still identified by the name of the commanding officer, with Sir William Gooch becoming the colonel of newly raised Goochs American Regiment. Unfortunately, rather than being posted in British North America, the unit was diverted for service in the Caribbean. Most of the regiments soldiers served aboard the naval ships, as marines or seamen - in clear breach of their terms of enlistment. During an expedition to Caragenda in 1741 the regiment performed poorly during an assault on the outer works of Fort St. Lazar - disobeying orders, abandoning the field, and laying down the scaling ladders the assault column needed to carry the walls. The regiment was transported to Jamaica where it encamped and was severely neglected by the British government. The soldiers were considered unreliable, lacking discipline, and were devastated by losses due to tropical sickness. In October of 1742 the unit was disbanded.
