Despite the heavy bloodshed on both sides, the engagement did not prove decisive. The war continued in Piedmont for many years, causing heavy casualties and much suffering, especially for the civilian population, until the signing of the Treaty of Turin in 1696. This treaty ended hostilities between France and the Duke of Savoy, Victor Amadeus II, and sanctioned the neutralization of Italy. However, the conflict continued albeit for a short time on the Flemish and Rhine frontiers, as well as on the Iberian Peninsula (fall of Barcelona).

The study of the evolution of the Venetian military organization will be developed through various volumes, which will analyze it in a chronological way, together with other volumes of in-depth studies on individual themes and topics. This volume will deal with the development of the uniforms of the Venetian army and of the auxiliary or capitulated troops, during the initial period of the war against the Turks (1684-1685).

The Most Serene Republic of Venice, the beating heart of the entire State that the lagoon city had to build around itself and on which it imposed its dominion, never had the intention of organizing itself to submit to its sovereignty more territories (Italian and otherwise) than it could use to protect its naval bases from land attacks and worked to prevent others from establishing similar ones in any way in order to threaten its trade routes, its markets, disturbing those political balances that produced its economic fortunes. This way of behaving was valid not only towards other States, but was always applied also within its possessions where the development of the major urban centers was certainly not favored but controlled and compressed always in favor of the lagoon city. Finally, the Venetians always directed their efforts and capital towards the defence and expansion of their vast eastern empire, more coastal and insular than territorial, dealing with "Italian affairs" only to maintain the division of the peninsula into many small different states, in constant conflict with each other, with the aim of preventing one of them from gaining the upper hand over the others to the point of becoming too great a threat even for them. With this work the authors wish to propose a reconstruction of the events of the army of the Republic of Venice in the last hundred years of its existence, a period rich in events that saw the Republic of San Marco, exhausted by the war of Candia (Crete), which ended disastrously in 1669 with the cession of almost the entire island to the Turks, recover vast territories in the Levant (peninsular Greece joined to the continent by the Isthmus of Corinth, called "Morea", or more classically "Peloponnese"), and in Dalmatia (the "New Purchase", or Grimani Line of 14 July 1700), before the end of the century, only to definitively lose many of them during the second War of Morea in 1719. As Eugenio Barbarich already noted about a hundred years ago "... if there is any work of undoubted value on the army of the Venetian Republic, little or nothing published can be found relating to its army, almost as if it were a negligible subject in the vast plot of the political events of the State born on the island of Crete". Extensive documentation, previously scarcely accessible, has made it possible to reconstruct an almost ignored, but highly honourable event for the Savoy troops, who. surrounded by a hostile population, faced with overwhelming adversary forces and with an unfriendly ally, always maintained maximum cohesion, executing to perfection the defensive plan devised by Victor Amadeus II from the previous year and managing to hold the island until 1720. This volume (divided into three tomes) is the first in the series and deals with the Savoy army and navy, as well as the militia and other Sicilian corps.

All three previously published volumes on this conflict over Sardinia and Sicily have now been brought together in one volume.

Italian Text, paperback, many colour illustrations. 226 pages.

Northern as well as southern Italy constituted a key place in the strategic duel between Spain and France, and the Peninsula lied on the front line in the struggle against the Ottoman Empire. Moreover, Italian states constituted good examples of fairly efficient governance machines, which developed many matters, included the "Military". Some of these states experienced long periods of wars, to the point that the claim regarding social elites progressively demilitarized to an unequalled extent anywhere else in Europe should be considered no longer valid.
This second volume looks at the armies of the lesser Italian States. The armies of Genoa, the Papal States, Tuscany, Parma, Modena, Mantua, Lucca, and many others are all examined in detail never before seen in the English language.

This volume also covers the nature and execution of military affairs and war in Italy. The book is lavishly illustrated and comes with 16 especially commissioned colour plates drawn by the author himself.

Italian Risorgimento desperately wanted to repudiate the values of the previous centuries. In place of a politically fragmented and militarily weak collection of small states, in the thrall of Counter-Reformation Catholicism, the 19th century historians dreamed of a united, secular, industrial and well-armed country that could withstand comparison to France, England and Germany. The lack of interest on this period increased even more under the fascist regime, which preferred to elude a period in which Italian states appeared as political entities dominated by foreign interference and focusing on the unreal Imperial myth reworked from the vestiges of the monuments of ancient Rome.
However, in the 17th century Italy was the third-largest country by population in Europe, after France and Germany, passing into second position for a century after 1650.

This first part of Volume 6 places Italian political and military within the wider European context and examines the armies of Savoy-Piedmont and the Republic of Venice.

The author deals with the events leading up to the battle and with the composition of the armies involved, especially that of the State of Milan, which was partly made up of officers and soldiers from the Italian peninsula.

The reconstruction of the situation on the ground is very meticulous and is done using sources that were difficult to find. What is remarkable is the detailed study of the state of the sites at the time of the battle, which today is no longer comparable to that of 1702 due to the changes that the course of the Po has undergone over time and the human activities and settlements that have taken place. Without it, it would not be easy to understand the movements of the troops in the area and the course of the battle itself. In this book, Fabio Fiorentin has managed to capture the various aspects of one of the most significant moments of the War of the Spanish Succession in Italy, which culminated in the famous siege of Turin in 1706 and ended with the defeat of the Franco-Spanish armies, which were forced to abandon the peninsula. In it, a strong imperial (or Austrian) dominance was established in place of the Spanish, which, between various vicissitudes and the Napoleonic interruption, shaped Italian history for the next 150 years. Fiorentin also extends his research to the events after the battle and their impact on the overall course of the war, so one may look forward to his further studies on this period.

The Spanish expedition of Montemar (1742-43) was repulsed by the Austrians thanks to the intervention of the Piedmontese army on the Panaro, and Austria took advantage of this to try in turn to reconquer the Kingdom of Naples, which had been conquered ten years earlier by Charles of Bourbon, son of the Spanish royal family.

The Austrian pursuit of the skilful Spanish retreat failed in the summer of 1744 in front of the entrenched camp that the Spanish and Neapolitan armies had set up under the command of King Charles of Bourbon at Velletri. Since no one wanted to risk a decisive battle, there was a long stalemate, dearly paid for by the population, with various diplomatic back-and-forths and Austrian attempts, partly supported by English ships and reactionaries hostile to King Charles' reformism, to win an indirect victory (first with a raid in Abruzzo, then with a narrowly failed coup against Velletri with the aim of capturing the king). The campaign ended with the Austrians' retreat to Rimini and King Charles' solemn entry into Rome, celebrated by the Pope.

The Italian front was so important that the French considered it as important as the German one, and committed there their best generals. William III considered it to be far more important than Spain, and, in spite of having no British army there, after King William's death London committed to it 1/10 of her war expense. It was considered so important in Vienna that the Emperor sent there his best general. Last, it was the front where all the French hopes to submit Europe died in Turin in 1706 after the first dramatic wound they suffered in Blenheim in 1704.
