While traditional Irish warfare mainly relied on swift-footed hit-and-run tactics, these battle-hardened warriors stood and fought it out to the last man, galloglass often facing galloglass.
The era of the galloglas reached its gory climax in the Battle of Knockdoe in 1504. Described as huge, violent and raw-boned by contemporary sources, these warriors represented an archetypical element of Irish warfare, and yet they had their origins in the Hebrides off the Scottish coast.
This book seeks to describe the origins, the history and the eventual disappearance of the galloglas from the battlefields of Ireland. Drawing on the latest archaeological evidence, it sheds light on the outward appearance, weapons and equipment, pay, organisation, and the motivation of these fearsome warriors.
The book was written in cooperation with Claíomh, one of the leading Irish reenactment groups reconstructing the daily life of the galloglas. Apart from numerous photographs of reenactors in reconstructed galloglas equipment, this volume contains detailed photographs of weapons and equipment as well as of historic locations, contemporary illustrations, and specially commissioned artwork.

This book describes the origin, history and disappearance of the Galloglass. It takes a look at their appearance, armament, pay, organisation and self-image of these warriors.
The latest archaeological findings are also taken into account.
The book was written in cooperation with Claíomh, one of the leading Irish re-enactment groups.
Included are many depictions of re-enactors as well as detailed photographs of weapons and equipment, contemporary illustrations, photographs of sites and a number of drawings.

Napoleon's Iberian Nightmare. The guerrilla warfare waged by the Spanish against the French occupiers between 1808 and 1814, coupled with the actions of the Portuguese and British allies, contributed in no small part to the fall of Napoleon I. This booklet examines, among other things, the Spanish guerrilla warfare in the Iberian Peninsula. This booklet looks at the historical background to the bloody conflict, the guerrilla leaders and the regions they controlled, guerrilla tactics, their weapons, the French countermeasures and the importance of priests to the guerrilla movement in Spain.
The fact that the Spanish word "guerrilla" - small war - is used all over the world today is evidence of the lasting impression made by the resistance that the Spaniards put up to Napoleon's troops invading their country between 1808 and 1814. While it was not a purely small-scale war (the regular Spanish army never completely disbanded), in fact there has never been such a large number of guerrilla groups again in history. Many of them later, because of their efficiency, even joined forces with the regular armed forces.

Content:
Origins of the "Little War"
The Spanish War of Independence
The Beginning of the Spanish Guerrilla War
The Horrors of War
Statutes for the Guerrillas
The Regional-.Guerrillas and their Leaders
Tactics of the Guerrilla War
The Guerrillas and the Regular Spanish Army
The Guerrilla Priests
The War against the Guerrillas
The Guerrilla Fighter and his Region
Weapons of the Guerrillas; The GuerrillaCamp
The Guerrillas and the Military Intelligence of the British
Demystifying the Guerrillas
The Guerrillas in British and French Testimonies
The Role of the Guerrillas in the Liberation of the Peninsula
The Militarisation of the Guerrillas and the Fate of their Leaders

Miguel Ángel Martín Más
Born in Cartagena in 1971
Miguel Ángel Martín Mas holds a PhD in Philology from the University of Salamanca and works as a teacher and as a Russian and English interpreter.
Service on the Indian Frontier. The history of the U.S. Cavalry and its struggle against the northern Plains Indians and the southern Apache tribes. Gapless descriptions of the lives, uniforms, equipment and tactics of the Indian fighters from 1866 to 1890. Included is a description of the Little Bighorn campaign and the hunt for Geronimo.
The role of the US cavalry during the Indian Wars has been enormously embellished in the literature. As part of the story of the Wild West, it became a legend long before the advent of American cinema. Hollywood contributed greatly to this success by creating a unique genre of cinema: the Western.
The 7th Cavalry, led by General George Armstrong Custer, Sioux, Comanches and Apaches, as well as battles such as Little Bighorn, have captured the imagination of many generations and turned the Wild West into a myth.
In truth, legends blur and transfigure history, but at the same time they perpetuate historical events. Today, the Western seems to have disappeared from our cinema screens. Over the generations, the blue soldiers, revolvers and Indians fell into oblivion.
This book tells of the military units, their strategies, uniforms, daily routines as well as their battles in a dangerous and hostile territory, against capable and terrible warrior peoples: the "redskins". It focuses on the climax and the end.

Content:
Introduction
Service on the Indian frontier
The cavalryman
Life on the prairie
The forts
The cavalry uniform
Life at the fort
The harsh winters
Organisation of the cavalry
Flags and insignia
Strategy. and Tactics in the Indian Wars
The Elusive Indian
Skirmishes and Ambushes
The Weapons of the Cavalry
The Horses
Saddle and Bridle
The Scouts
The Indian Wars
Little Bighorn; Custer's 7. From Akkon in the Outremer to the state of the german knights order in the Baltic. In 1190 citizens of the german cities Bremen and Luebeck founded a field-hospital for the pilgrims and crusaders near Akkon in Palestine. They cared for the sick and wounded. The monks called themselves "German Brothers of the church St. Mary of Jerusalem". In 1198 they became the Deutschritterorden or Deutschorden, the order of the teutonic knights. In the Holy Land the germans became the third most mighty knights order, but the templars and the order of St. John had still claimed most of the land for themselves. So the knights and german settlers conquered the land east of the river Oder along the baltic coast to the lake Peipus. In 1410 the knights were beaten at the battle of Tannenberg by polish knights and lost most of their territory.

Content:
Origins and expansion of the Order
Timeline
Order structure and organisation
What kind of men were they
The Order in the Holy Land
Crusade in the Baltic
The Prussians and Lithuanians
The Order's Cross
The Order's Costume
The members of the Order
The Army of the Order
The Horses of the Teutonic Order
The Sword
Other Weapons
The Shield
The Helmet
The Armour
The flags of the Order's army
Towns and crusaders
Mercenaries and Witings
Tactics and fighting methods
The lance or glefe
Horn, whistles, heralds
The siege system
The camp
The troop; field rations
The medical service
The Struthers - Christian buccaneers
The scouts
The couriers
Monetary value, cost of living
The Castle of the Order
The ships of the order
Other Orders of Knighthood in the Baltic; List of Sources

Rolf Fuhrmann
Born 1957 in Gronau/Leine, living in Wilhelmshaven since 1996.
Trained as a nurse, self-taught draughtsman.
Since graduating from high school in 1976, he has worked mainly as a freelance artist and author, specialising in costume, uniform and military history.
- The defeat of the Teutonic Knight Order. There had been a lot of legends and myths about the battle on the ice. Is it really true, that Tannenberg was the "Stalingrad" of the german knights ? In volume 6 "Der Deutschorden" the author described the knights, the order, the armour and weapons of these famous warriors. In this additional volume 7, he shows the political situation before and after the battle, the battle at Tannenberg itself, the defence of the Marienburg and the reconstitution of the order. Also enclosed is a complete order of battle of the combatants, a list of the fallen superior knights, pictures of banners, armour and heraldry etc. Lots of colored illustrations, 60 pages, paperback, german text.

In the national consciousness of the Polish people, this battle stands on an elevated pedestal to this day. In their understanding, the righteous defenders of their country were victorious over aggressive, conquering German knights. Every major Polish town has a street bearing the name of the battle, and every schoolchild still knows about this event today.
For German historiography from the 19th to the first half of the 20th century, the Battle of Tannenberg signalled the defeat of the Teutonic Order through superiority and betrayal.
Strangely enough, there is no account of this largest medieval battle on German soil in German literature after the Second World War. In the publications available to date, some of which are difficult to access (in German, Polish and English), the interested reader will sometimes find only superficial, sometimes strongly divergent or nationalistic accounts.

Contents:
The Teutonic Order
Prehistory
The political situation around 1400 and the causes of the war
The beginning of the war and the armistice
The Battle of Tannenberg
The Teutonic Order army
The allied army
The probable battle formation of the two armies
The battle for Marienburg Castle
Continuation of the war, 1st Peace of Thorn
Outlook
Supplement
German/Polish place names
Bibliography

The appendix contains a list of all the grand bailiffs and commanders who fell in the Battle of Tannenberg. Illustrated in colour throughout, many coloured drawings. 60 pages.

Gerald Iselt
Born in Erfurt in 1956
After studying and graduating as a pedagogue, he has worked as a social pedagogue in various youth facilities for over 20 years and has been head of a residential youth community for three years.
He has been interested in history since his earliest youth and in recent years has spent his free time intensively studying the Teutonic Order in the Middle Ages and the Battle of Tannenberg.

In the western literature about the japanese Samurai, there was no comparable book with a detailed analysis about those armies until today. How were they composed? Which role played the warriors of the different branches and types of weapons? What was the difference between japanese and european armies of these centuries? In fact, however, the first of these tenshutaku were built at the very end of the Sengoku period. Most fortifications were built of wood, had earthen ramparts and moats, and cleverly exploited the natural environment.

The second volume in the series will present these older fortifications as well as fortifications that were affected by major sieges such as Takamatsu in 1582, Fushimi and Ueda in 1600 and Osaka in 1614/15. The book explains the sophisticated siege techniques, countermeasures as well as the Japanese artillery system of the time.

A second focus is on the complex heraldry of leading as well as lesser-known samurai families of the Sengoku period, with many colourful examples.

Also important for heraldists, but equally for figurine collectors and painters, the third part continues with an introduction to the world of traditional Japanese textile patterns and colours, their use, the method of manufacture in the pre-industrial age, and their special symbolism.

Contents:
Forts, castles and fortresses
- An eyewitness account
- Fortifications of wood and earth
- Types of Japanese castles
- Fortresses of stone, wood and earth
- Elements of Japanese fortress architecture
Sieges, Sieges, siege equipment and artillery
- Sieges -
Four case studies from the 1600
- Siege techniques and equipment
- Artillery
Heraldry and field signs - variants and functions
- The mon as the basis of Japanese heraldry
- Personal field signs - uma-jirushi
- Large high rectangular banners - nobori no hata
- Back flags - sashimono
- Other forms and functions of banners
- Maritime heraldry
- Heraldic and other
Unit identification
Dress, Colours and textile patterns of the samurai
- Evolution of clothing - kimono and noragi
- Symbol of the warrior: the jimbaori
- Stand, clothing and choice of colours
- Colour mixtures and combinations
- Some colour groups and their applications
- Textile patterns

Till Weber
born. 1965 in Berlin
Occupation: Associate Professor
Since 1998 at Ryukyu University in Okinawa (Japan) as a university lecturer. This new publication describes not the legionaries, but their opponent: the germanic warriors under their leader Arminius, a former roman officer. Clothing, weaponry, equipment and tactics are as well illustrated as the tribal origins of the different warrior clans and their motivations for the fight.

Field insignia in particular were usually a favoured target of enemy attacks and the losses among flag bearers and their cover were often enormous during a battle.
For a number of the captured and lost flags or standards, the circumstances under which they were taken from the troops or under which they were stubbornly defended have been recorded, sometimes very precisely. From time to time, more comprehensive personal details have also survived about those who snatched a standard from the enemy or saved it from being lost to the enemy, often at the cost of their own lives.
On this basis, the reader learns details about a whole series of often bitter disputes over the possession of these standards. In the case of several other flags, their condition during the fighting or immediately after the battle is described. All flags and standards mentioned are graphically depicted in detail.
In addition to the actual battle of Waterloo on 18 June 1815, the battles at Quatre Bras, Ligny and Plancenoit are also included, as far as events worth mentioning concerning the flags are concerned.
The protagonists are members of the armies of all participating nations.
In addition to the harrowing descriptions of battles for numerous field insignia, the reader learns interesting facts about the flags themselves, their significance and handling in the Napoleonic armies.
What did the uniforms of the flag bearers and their cover look like, where did their members stand in the formation?
The flag groups were composed of corporals, non-commissioned officers and officers.
In addition to the numerous illustrations of flags, this volume contains detailed descriptions of the rank insignia and special features of these ranks of all participating armies on many colour plates!

Contents
Field insignia. No other army of the Confederation of the Rhine went through such drastic chances in organisation and uniforms then the saxon army. After the defeat at the side of the prussian army at Jena/Auerstaedt and the campaign of 1809 as part of Napoleons army, it made the experience of a totally reform. Afterwards the saxons looked like french soldiers, but in different colours. Volume 13 of the "Heere and Waffen"-series ("Armies and weapons") shows this "new saxon army" in contemporary prints and coloured new plates by Patrice Courcelles and Edmund Wagner. All different regiments are portrayed by Dr. Peter Bunde. The book is completed by a history of the saxon army in the years 1810-1813.

English edition: 502/300.

Starting with the origin and relationship of ranks and service positions and their development since 1789, Lutz Amsel analyses in the main part the special features of the rank groups and their uses during the 1st Empire:
- Marshals and generals
- Staff officers
- officers
- non-commissioned officers
- enlisted men.
He also deals with the special features of the Guard. An extensive chapter is dedicated to the rank of Caporal and its duties and uses.

There are a large number of publications on this subject. Many of them have a problem with the methodological approach. For the most part, no clear distinction is made between rank and position. This creates a number of comprehension problems. This assessment also applies to numerous French publications. There is a further problem with publications in other languages. Here, attempts are often made to project national views and peculiarities onto the French army. This leads to further problems of understanding.

Contents:
Preliminary remarks
Origin and relationship of ranks and service positions
Ranks and positions since the Revolution of 1789
Marshals and generals
Staff officers
Officers
Non-commissioned officers
Crews
Special features of the Guard
Rank insignia
Appendix 1 Duties and responsibilities of the Caporal
Caporal as group leader
Caporal of the week
Caporal for economic affairs
Caporal as orderly
Caporal for surveillance tasks, especially in the military hospital
Caporal as patrol leader
Caporal as guard commander
Caporal on the march
Caporal on campaign and in battle
Appendix 2: Uniform designations in the French army
Appendix 3: The statutory ranks and positions in the French army
1804 - 1815
Appendix 4: The uniforms of the medical officers
Bibliography

As a result, Emperor Julian settled Frankish warriors and their families in Toxandria in present-day North Brabant in exchange for military services, where they took over border security. The Franks not only made up a considerable proportion of the soldiers in the Roman army anyway, but through their service they also reached the highest military and civil leadership positions, whose holders were often also Frankish district kings. Eventually, one of them, King Clovis I of the Merovingian dynasty, succeeded in eliminating the other Frankish petty kings and conquering all of Gaul after the decline of Western Roman power. Under him and his successors, the Franks rose to become the leading military power in Central Europe.

In this first volume, in addition to a brief historical outline, the costume, protective weapons and personal equipment of the warriors of the Frankish Empire are first described in detail. The graphic reconstructions cover leaders and retainers from the period from the middle of the 4th to the second half of the 6th century A.D. They are based on the numerous surviving weapon graves, some of which are richly furnished, as well as on the few surviving written sources.

Contents:
Time table (236-561 A.D.)
Introduction

Historical Background
- The Franks and the Roman Empire
- Clovis, King of the Franks
-Chlovis' Heirs: Imperial division and expansion

Sources
- Pictorial sources
- Written sources
- Archaeological sources
- Principles of reconstruction

Costume and costume accessories
- Clothing
- Tunic and flap skirt
- Leggings
- Coat and brooches
- Fabrics and dress colours
- Footwear and gloves
- Jewellery
- Hair and beard costume
- Belts

Belt pouches and bag hangers
Personal equipment

Protective weapons
- The helmet
- The armour.

Due to the Frankish right of succession, however, there were repeated divisions of the empire and reunions, which eventually led to the decline in power of the Merovingian dynasty. When, after the death of King Dagobert I, the empire was divided between his two underage sons, the increasing influence of the house emperors already began to emerge.

In this second volume, the shield and sword of the Franks as well as those of the Alamanni, Thuringians and Bavarians incorporated into the empire are described in detail. The graphic reconstructions show Merovingian foot and cavalry warriors from the period from the middle of the 6th to the middle of the 7th century and are based on the numerous preserved and in part also richly furnished weapon graves of this epoch.

The shield
Body of the shield
Sheathing
Shield hilt
Shield bosses
Border and ornamental fittings
Painting
Reconstruction

Weapons
The sword
- Blade
- Handle
- Scabbard
- Weir suspension and method of carrying
- Sword beads
- Conclusion.

Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, strove to build a strong Central European empire. But although the Saxon army enjoyed a good reputation as a modern army, it suffered a series of bitter defeats against the ridiculed Swedish army under the young King Charles XII.
This volume analyses the structures of the Saxon army during the war. The usual recruiting conditions and living conditions of an early modern army are described in detail, as are the campaigns and battles in which the Electorate of Saxony's army took part.

Contents:
A young king, an old empire
Alliance policy
Karl XII.-. a ridiculed monarch and a degenerate army?
Tactics and strategy
Uniforms and weapons of the Augustan army 1694-.1705
The Battle of Fraustadt
The Swedish Occupation
Reorganisations
The Cost of a Standing Army
Recruitment
The End of the Land Defension
Army Reorganisation
The Return to war
The rise of Russia
August's return to Poland
The war in Pomerania
The siege of Stralsund
Rebellion and peace settlements
Army reductions
Conclusion
Literature.
