From their appearance in the 13th century to the 16th century wars of the Tudor age, the so-called galloglas determined the manner in which war was waged on Irish soil. While traditional Irish warfare mainly relied on swift-footed hit-and-run tactics, these battle-hardened warriors stood and fought it out to the last man, galloglass often facing galloglass.
The era of the galloglas reached its gory climax in the Battle of Knockdoe in 1504. Described as huge, violent and raw-boned by contemporary sources, these warriors represented an archetypical element of Irish warfare, and yet they had their origins in the Hebrides off the Scottish coast.
This book seeks to describe the origins, the history and the eventual disappearance of the galloglas from the battlefields of Ireland. Drawing on the latest archaeological evidence, it sheds light on the outward appearance, weapons and equipment, pay, organisation, and the motivation of these fearsome warriors.
The book was written in cooperation with Claíomh, one of the leading Irish reenactment groups reconstructing the daily life of the galloglas. Apart from numerous photographs of reenactors in reconstructed galloglas equipment, this volume contains detailed photographs of weapons and equipment as well as of historic locations, contemporary illustrations, and specially commissioned artwork.

This book describes the origin, history and disappearance of the Galloglass. It takes a look at their appearance, armament, pay, organisation and self-image of these warriors.
The latest archaeological findings are also taken into account.
The book was written in cooperation with Claíomh, one of the leading Irish re-enactment groups.
Included are many depictions of re-enactors as well as detailed photographs of weapons and equipment, contemporary illustrations, photographs of sites and a number of drawings.

While it was not a purely small-scale war (the regular Spanish army never completely disbanded), in fact there has never been such a large number of guerrilla groups again in history. The order of the teutonic knights. From Akkon in the Outremer to the state of the german knights order in the Baltic. In 1190 citizens of the german cities Bremen and Luebeck founded a field-hospital for the pilgrims and crusaders near Akkon in Palestine. They cared for the sick and wounded. The monks called themselves "German Brothers of the church St. Mary of Jerusalem". In 1198 they became the Deutschritterorden or Deutschorden, the order of the teutonic knights. In the Holy Land the germans became the third most mighty knights order, but the templars and the order of St. John had still claimed most of the land for themselves. So the knights and german settlers conquered the land east of the river Oder along the baltic coast to the lake Peipus. In 1410 the knights were beaten at the battle of Tannenberg by polish knights and lost most of their territory.

- The defeat of the Teutonic Knight Order. There had been a lot of legends and myths about the battle on the ice. Is it really true, that Tannenberg was the "Stalingrad" of the german knights ? In volume 6 "Der Deutschorden" the author described the knights, the order, the armour and weapons of these famous warriors. In this additional volume 7, he shows the political situation before and after the battle,the battle at Tannenberg itself, the defence of the Marienburg and the reconstitution of the order. Also enclosed is a complete order of battle of the combatants, a list of the fallen superior knights, pictures of banners, armour and heraldry etc. Lots of colored illustrations, 60 pages, paperback, german text.

In the national consciousness of the Polish people, this battle stands on an elevated pedestal to this day. In their understanding, the righteous defenders of their country were victorious over aggressive, conquering German knights. Every major Polish town has a street bearing the name of the battle, and every schoolchild still knows about this event today.
For German historiography from the 19th to the first half of the 20th century, the Battle of Tannenberg signalled the defeat of the Teutonic Order through superiority and betrayal.
Strangely enough, there is no account of this largest medieval battle on German soil in German literature after the Second World War. In the publications available to date, some of which are difficult to access (in German, Polish and English), the interested reader will sometimes find only superficial, sometimes strongly divergent or nationalistic accounts.

The elegant, multi-storey main towers of Japanese castles, surrounded by massive fortifications, are widely known as symbols of samurai rule. In fact, however, the first of these tenshutaku were built at the very end of the Sengoku period. Most fortifications were built of wood, had earthen ramparts and moats, and cleverly exploited the natural environment.

The second volume in the series will present these older fortifications as well as fortifications that were affected by major sieges such as Takamatsu in 1582, Fushimi and Ueda in 1600 and Osaka in 1614/15. Fought, captured and lost
Numerous flags changed hands during the fateful Battle of Waterloo or "La Belle Alliance" on 18 June 1815 - in most cases under highly dramatic circumstances. Field insignia in particular were usually a favoured target of enemy attacks and the losses among flag bearers and their cover were often enormous during a battle.
For a number of the captured and lost flags or standards, the circumstances under which they were taken from the troops or under which they were stubbornly defended have been recorded, sometimes very precisely. From time to time, more comprehensive personal details have also survived about those who snatched a standard from the enemy or saved it from being lost to the enemy, often at the cost of their own lives.
On this basis, the reader learns details about a whole series of often bitter disputes over the possession of these standards. In the case of several other flags, their condition during the fighting or immediately after the battle is described. All flags and standards mentioned are graphically depicted in detail.
In addition to the actual battle of Waterloo on 18 June 1815, the battles at Quatre Bras, Ligny and Plancenoit are also included, as far as events worth mentioning concerning the flags are concerned.
The protagonists are members of the armies of all participating nations.

The saxon army 181-1813. No other army of the Confederation of the Rhine went through such drastic chances in organisation and uniforms then the saxon army. After the defeat at the side of the prussian army at Jena/Auerstaedt and the campaign of 1809 as part of Napoleons army, it made the experience of a totally reform. Afterwards the saxons looked like french soldiers, but in different colours. Volume 13 of the "Heere and Waffen"-series ("Armies and weapons") shows this "new saxon army" in contemporary prints and coloured new plates by Patrice Courcelles and Edmund Wagner. Roman Troops in Germania 9 AD.
This is a detailed description of the Roman troops that were completely routed by rebellious Germanic tribes in a cauldron battle in the autumn of 9 AD in the area the Romans called "Saltus Teutoburgiensis", Teutoburg Forest. The legionaries and auxiliary troops under the command of Publius Quinctilius Varus, commander-in-chief of the Rhine army, are reconstructed as realistically as possible on the basis of the current state of historical and archaeological research, with special reference to the ground finds of Augustan military camps in Germania and the battlefield at Kalkriese.

Here, attempts are often made to project national views and peculiarities onto the French army. This leads to further problems of understanding.

From the 3rd century AD onwards, Frankish followers repeatedly invaded Roman Gaul, where they wreaked severe havoc. As a result, Emperor Julian settled Frankish warriors and their families in Toxandria in present-day North Brabant in exchange for military services, where they took over border security. The Franks not only made up a considerable proportion of the soldiers in the Roman army anyway, but through their service they also reached the highest military and civil leadership positions, whose holders were often also Frankish district kings. Eventually, one of them, King Clovis I of the Merovingian dynasty, succeeded in eliminating the other Frankish petty kings and conquering all of Gaul after the decline of Western Roman power. Under him and his successors, the Franks rose to become the leading military power in Central Europe.

In this first volume, in addition to a brief historical outline, the costume, protective weapons and personal equipment of the warriors of the Frankish Empire are first described in detail. The graphic reconstructions cover leaders and retainers from the period from the middle of the 4th to the second half of the 6th century A.D. They are based on the numerous surviving weapon graves, some of which are richly furnished, as well as on the few surviving written sources.

Part 2: Shield and Sword

Under King Clovis I and his successors, the Frankish Empire had developed into the leading military power of Central Europe. Due to the Frankish right of succession, however, there were repeated divisions of the empire and reunions, which eventually led to the decline in power of the Merovingian dynasty. When, after the death of King Dagobert I, the empire was divided between his two underage sons, the increasing influence of the house emperors already began to emerge.

In this second volume, the shield and sword of the Franks as well as those of the Alamanni, Thuringians and Bavarians incorporated into the empire are described in detail. The graphic reconstructions show Merovingian foot and cavalry warriors from the period from the middle of the 6th to the middle of the 7th century and are based on the numerous preserved and in part also richly furnished weapon graves of this epoch.
