In these inspiring memoirs, the author recounts how he left school without a single qualification and embarked on a thirty-year career, spent largely in Herefordincluding four years within "The Regiment" itself. Against all odds, he rose through the ranks, eventually earning his commission and retiring with the rank of Major. Initially assigned to the 22 SAS as a radio operator, he volunteered for the "Selection" processarguably the toughest and most demanding of all military testsand passed it successfully. He was subsequently posted to the "Boat Troop" of D Squadron, with which he saw active service during the Falklands War, in Northern Ireland, and as part of the UK's counter-terrorism team. Thanks to a diary he kept during the Falklands War, the reader is treated to a gripping, first-hand account of the intense combat operations he and his comrades experiencedincluding reconnaissance missions, diversionary attacks, commando raids, and ambusheson both South Georgia and the Falkland Islands. Later, he commanded the Royal Signals unit supporting D Squadron of the 22 SAS; this was followed by his commissioning as an officer and, subsequently, a second career as a security consultant in various crisis regions across the Middle East. It is a privilege to read this admirably humble account of the unique career of a man who offers a fascinating insight into the life and work of an elite Special Forces soldier.

This book was first published in 1936; Ralph Mottram served for the greater part of the war on the Western Frontinitially with the "Royal Norfolks" and later as a liaison officer to civilians in the forward areas of the BEF, primarily along the Franco-Belgian border. He undertook the preparatory work for the book in late 1935 and early 1936, although he had already revisited the old battlefields prior to that time. He covers vast stretches of the former war zone in France and Flanders, adopting the original approach of dividing the region into five sectionsa structure that roughly aligns with the sectors held by the five armies of the BEF. It is fascinating to view the modern-day Somme region and the "Salient" through the eyes of a gifted author and veteran of that campaigna man who penned his work just as the large-scale commemorative and construction projects of the Imperial War Graves Commission were nearing completion, and as the landscape, villages, and towns had already regained a certain measure of normality. Almost everything Mottram describesonly a few years before the region would once again be devastated by a world warremains recognizable today. What he brings to this deeply personal guidebook is the trained eye of a man who lived amidst the local population during the war years, yet remained an integral part of that colossal undertaking represented by the BEF. As a literary figure, he imbues the book with astute observations; in doing so, he consistently frames his descriptions within the context of the fighting soldiers he knew personally, while also drawing extensively upon the wealth of materialmemoirs and historical accountsthat had appeared in the years immediately following the war. This work is a true literary gem regarding the First World War.

A tribute to British heritage, the Trusted Guardians have been the monarch's personal bodyguard since 1660. They occupy an iconic position in British society as guardians of tradition and ceremony, and are recognized worldwide as the epitome of British splendor and national identity. At public ceremonies, the men and women of the regiment appear as a single military unit, their uniforms uniting them into a cohesive ceremonial and combat force. The photographs, taken over a period of almost two years, document the timelessness of regimental life and, in particular, the bond between horse and soldier.

The United Nations responded immediately, calling on its member states to support South Korea. Great Britain also sent troops. One of the British units drawn into the three-year-long, bitter conflict was the 1st Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment. "The Glosters in the Korean War" chronicles the events surrounding the battalion, from its mobilization for deployment in Colchester in 1950, through its training and arrival in Korea, to the return of the last prisoners of war at the end of 1953. In February 1951, as part of the 29th British Independent Infantry Brigade, the Glosters saw heavy fighting and spearheaded the attack to recapture Hill 327 from Chinese forces. Their successful attack was part of a larger UN operation to reclaim lost territory. Yet, just a few weeks later, in April 1951, that same hill would become the scene of their most famous and desperate resistance during the massive Chinese Spring Offensive. On April 22, three divisions of the Chinese 63rd Armyover 27,000 soldierslaunched a major offensive across the Imjin River. Faced with this overwhelming force, the Glosters, numbering just over 700 men, held an eight-kilometer defensive line. For three days, they endured relentless attacks, heavy artillery fire, and brutal hand-to-hand combat. When the order to retreat finally came, the battalion was virtually cut off and on the verge of encirclement. Their resistance, however, bought UN forces crucial time to reorganize and helped stabilize the front north of Seoul. The price of victory at Imjin was devastating. Of the 620 Glosters who went into battle, only a few escaped. Many were killed or wounded, and more than 500 were taken prisoner. For their extraordinary courage, the battalionsoon hailed as "The Glorious Glosters"received the U.S. Presidential Unit Citation, an honor rarely bestowed upon non-American units. General James Van Fleet later described their actions as "the most outstanding example of gallantry by a unit in modern warfare."

After nine grueling months of infantry training at the Guards Depot in Pirbright, he was assigned to the Irish Guards. Tim saw action twice in South Armagh, a region notorious as "bandit country" where the Provisional IRA was responsible for the deaths of 165 British security forces during the Troubles. After several years with the Irish Guards, Tim transferred to the Royal Irish Regiment and patrolled South Derryanother republican stronghold with close ties to the Provisional IRA. In this account, Tim paints an unflinching picture of his life as a young soldier, told with his characteristic honesty and self-deprecating humor. He presents a gripping, authentic narrative of his time in the British Army, revealing both the triumphs and the hardships of being a career soldier. "Woodentop: Her Majesty's Foot Guards, Adventure Drinking, and Northern Ireland" is a candid and unforgettable autobiography that captures the culture, camaraderie, chaos, and constant danger of serving during the Northern Ireland conflict. Filled with previously unpublished reflections, vivid details, and dark humor, it will captivate readers of military history and memoirs alike, as well as anyone interested in the reality behind the uniform.

These deployments led to new uniforms, weapons, equipment, tactics, and a new organizational structure, culminating in the creation of the Future Commando Force in 2020. This book focuses precisely on these changes, using in-depth text and striking, specially commissioned illustrations to document the evolution of the Royal Marines Commandos' uniforms, insignia, weapons, and equipment since 1991. Whether in landing craft, small boats, helicopters, by parachute, jetpack, or on foot, they appear where their adversaries least expect them. But first, they must complete the Commando Course and earn the coveted green beret.

The conflict escalated in the 1970s when Sultan Qaboos received military support from Britain and Iran. By 1975, government forces, with the help of British and Iranian troops, had defeated the rebels, secured the region and stabilised Sultan Qaboos' rule. Major David Freeman was one of those British soldiers a British infantry officer who was seconded to the Sultan of Oman's armed forces in the 1970s. Major Freeman has recorded his experiences of this conflict the operations, tactics, successes and battles in great detail, covering the final year of the war in 1975 and the first six months of 1976 in the still active eastern sector of Dhofar. Fighting the Sultan's War is an insightful first-hand account of one of the lesser-known small wars of the Cold War era.

Given the great public interest in the dramatic events unfolding in the South Atlantic at the time, the term caught on and is now in common use. The Yompers is the first account written by a company commander who fought in the Falklands War. Raised from their beds in the early hours of 2 April 1982, the author sailed 8,000 miles with the rest of 45 Commando Royal Marines to play a key role in recapturing the Falkland Islands from Argentine occupation. Without helicopters and with little provisions, they yomped in appalling weather with overloaded rucksacks over terrain that threatened to break their legs and ankles with every step. Despite extreme hardship, their morale and training ensured that they remained a cohesive, combat-ready force. They fought in the decisive night battle for Two Sisters, the twin 1,000-foot peaks that were crucial to the defensive positions around Stanley. The author paints a revealing picture of the Royal Marines Commandos at war. The book The Yompers is realistic and moving, sometimes ironic and amusing, and offers vivid, original first-hand insights into other aspects of the Falklands War and conflicts in general.

Within three days, the Soviet-backed North Koreans had captured the South Korean capital of Seoul and threatened to take over the entire country. Facing imminent defeat, the South Koreans and their American allies urgently called for reinforcements. Among the first to answer that call were the men of the 27th British Commonwealth Brigade. The Commonwealth Brigade, composed of units from five countriesBritain, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and Indiafought nine months of brutal battles. From the Pusan Pocket in the far south to the border with communist China, the diverse units of the brigade forged themselves into a highly effective fighting force. The Commonwealth troops faced North Koreans, Chinese communists and the equally brutal General Winter and emerged from numerous battles as a respected and effective fighting force. This book is the first to examine the composition of the five countries that made up the Commonwealth Brigade, describing their similarities and differences and how they were brought together into a single effective unit. It also examines in detail the incident of friendly fire on Hill 282, when the Argylls were accidentally bombed by the US Air Force and the first VC of the war was awarded. This book also covers the decisive battle at Kapyong, which helped to blunt the Chinese spring offensive of 1951. Unlike earlier historical works, which often focused on the actions of a single country, this book considers the contributions of all Commonwealth forces as a whole and shows that it was the combined efforts of Commonwealth troops that ultimately led to success.

Shamrocks among the Poppies describes how a small group of soldiers from the Royal Irish Regiment and other units isolated and outnumbered fought to defend a dilapidated mud-brick complex against determined and well-armed Taliban insurgents who were bent on their destruction. The book not only provides a vivid description of life and death in the compound during more than five weeks of heavy Taliban attacks, but also sheds light on the controversial background and consequences of Britain's decision to shift its focus to Afghanistan while still heavily involved in the US-led invasion of Iraq. It highlights the failures of the intelligence services and political and military decision-makers that led to the deployment of a force that was too small and understaffed for the tasks at hand, and how British soldiers found themselves scattered in small groups in northern Helmand, fighting for their lives against a fierce and fearless enemy while trying to prop up a weak and frightened provincial governor. Equally important, however, is the author's highlighting of the long-term impact of the sustained, intense fighting on the mental health of many of the soldiers deployed there, and his criticism of the government's shameful failure to provide the veterans of Musa Qal'eh with the necessary medical care upon their return.

Overlapping great powers the Ottomans, the Polish-Lithuanian Empire and Muscovy Russia fought over the vast geopolitical Ukraine, which stretched from the Danube across the Black Sea and the Caucasus to the Caspian Sea. Embedded in this turbulent conflict is the emergence of Ukraine, or rather several Ukraines, proto-states of military groups linked by strategic goals, social classes and economic interests. They were promoted by the empires and overwhelmed them from within by developing superior resources and combat capabilities. This is a link to today's Ukraine and a fascinating insight into the current confrontation.

In 2021, the Department of Veterans Affairs discontinued the prescription of Vicodin, which Bob Armstrong had been taking since 1976 for a back injury he sustained ten years after leaving the US Marine Corps. What began as an appeal to the Department to reverse this decision became this autobiography, in which reflections on the war and its social injustices are interwoven with a relentless portrait of America in these dangerous times. Drawing on his personal experiences, the author recounts his time as a photographer in the 3rd Marine Division. With suspenseful words and photos, a selection of which can be seen in the book, he paints a vivid picture of the fighting in the jungles of Vietnam. In addition to gripping action stories, the book offers comprehensive social commentary on the treatment of veterans and their healthcare. The VA reduced prescriptions for opioid painkillers from 679,000 veterans in 2012 to 247,000 in 2020. Armstrong recognises the scale of the drug crisis, but also believes that an unknown number of responsible veterans have been deprived of much-needed pain medication. With humour and cynicism, the author shares his insights into living with pain and his frustration with the bureaucratic system that controls access to medication. He admits that his opinions sometimes seem perverse and twisted, but only because he hasn't taken his medication.

America, it is said, processes its traumas with the help of Hollywood, and few experiences were more traumatic than involvement in the Vietnam War. When the last US helicopters fled the American embassy compound during the fall of Saigon, they left behind a country ravaged by twenty years of death and destruction. They returned to a country that was damaged in other ways. The America that ended its involvement in Vietnam in 1975 was defeated, humiliated, divided and scarred. It was a confusing change for a nation that saw itself as being on the right side of history. Just a generation earlier, Americans had celebrated the bravery of the GIs and Marines who stormed the beaches of Iwo Jima and Normandy. Now they were confronted with a uglier side of war: senseless casualties, disillusioned and mutinous soldiers, massacres of innocent civilians, and the shooting of unarmed student protesters. For a long time, it was impossible for America to process these experiences until Hollywood showed the way. The film industry had initially begun to treat Vietnam as a continuation of the Second World War. The action-packed John Wayne film The Green Berets (which was made with the full support of the Pentagon) had a simplistic we are the good guys message. However, as American casualties in Vietnam rose, social unrest broke out and the war aims became increasingly unclear, the film studios withdrew. After The Green Berets in 1968, no major films were made about the conflict until a decade later, when the controversial and groundbreaking film The Deer Hunter was released. The subject was considered too controversial, although some courageous filmmakers dealt with it in an indirect way (Soldier Blue was a retelling of the My Lai massacre, set in the Wild West). Finally, The Deer Hunter tore off the band-aid and shed light on the American experience in Vietnam. The portrayal of US soldiers as victims rather than heroes led to arguments in cinemas and questions in Congress. But it paved the way for the greatest series of war films ever made. Apocalypse Now, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket and many others rewrote the grammar of war films and helped a wounded nation come to terms with an unpopular war. This is the story of how these films came to be, how they were received at the time, and how they shaped the American experience in Vietnam. The names behind them are legends in the film industry, from directors such as Francis Ford Coppola, Stanley Kubrick and Michael Cimino to actors such as John Wayne, Sylvester Stallone, Tom Cruise, Robert de Niro and Meryl Streep.

The task was not to destroy the enemy, as they were subjects of the Sultan, but to persuade the rebels to join the Omani government and encourage the independence-minded peoples of Jebel Dhofar to withdraw their support for the insurgents. If necessary, these objectives were to be achieved by making it clear to the insurgents that they could never win the armed struggle. This is the gripping story of the role played in this conflict by the men and squadrons of the 22nd Special Air Service Regiment, the first full SAS squadron in the region. Written by the man who commanded this unit and successfully recruited the first groups of Dhofari guerrillas to fight for the Sultan, SAS. Secret War offers a unique and personal insight into one of the most successful counter-insurgency campaigns of the 20th century.

The unit and its capabilities are discreet in nature, in keeping with its motto, Lateo, which means to remain hidden. In 1982, amid the tensions of the Cold War, the unit was formed with a special mission: to operate covertly behind enemy lines, wait for Warsaw Pact units to pass through, and then attack the following forces. These elite soldiers, consisting of specially selected teams of six, took refuge in underground shelters and then emerged to be deployed at observation posts armed with the firepower of the British Army. The tasks of this special unit, which is part of the Royal Artillery's 1st Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance Brigade, include directing artillery fire and attacks by combat aircraft and precision missiles, as well as providing vital information on enemy positions, movements, strength and morale. The battery has also been deployed as a Surveillance and Target Acquisition (STA) patrol, operating far from the main force, sometimes deep behind enemy lines. Members of the battery are expected to be able to remain undetected for up to a week without the enemy noticing their presence. In the 1980s and 1990s, there were numerous deployments to Northern Ireland and the Balkans. As the world changed after the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001, the unit also changed and was deployed several times in Iraq and Afghanistan. Written by a former Special Observer and infantry officer and troop commander, with contributions from across the military, including British special forces, Special Observers of all ranks and generals in the British Army, this is the first time the world has been given an insight into this top-secret unit.

With their deployment to the front line drawing ever closer, a Welsh infantry battalion was in the process of selecting its best men for sniper training. The selected young Welshmen became close friends as they battled through the gruelling sniper training. Shortly after completing the course, they lost one of their comrades to the Taliban, and Eddie and the other lads were sent to Helmand province for the second time, into the raging war. Follow their journey as they take on the Taliban, from enemy snipers to Taliban leaders. As part of the largest air strike operation since World War II, they fired from a distance of one mile and even took out two enemy fighters with a single volley. They were victorious in battle and earned their title as snipers, but it came at a price. As the mission in Afghanistan came to an end, Eddie began to feel the effects of what was later diagnosed as post-traumatic stress disorder, which quickly took control of his life and sent him into a downward spiral. It was a humiliating, terrifying experience that lasted over a decade and nearly cost him his life. With the discouraging diagnosis that there is no known cure, Eddie decides to take his life into his own hands and find his own solutions, as this compelling story shows. With detailed accounts of his mental decline and complex insights into killing by pulling the trigger, Afghanistan Sniper takes readers on a journey through the highest highs and lowest lows that only those who have walked the same path know.

This is the aim of James Goulty's Eyewitness RAF. Using a vivid selection of statements from men and women, he offers a direct insight into all aspects of everyday life in the service during the war. Throughout the book, the focus is on the individual experiences of RAF personnel preparing for flight, flying itself, daily life at an air base, time on leave, and the issues of discipline, morale and motivation. One particularly vivid section describes, in the men's own words, how it felt to take part in missions and the impact of losses airmen who were killed, wounded or captured. The result is a fascinating and varied insight into the RAF, which may be less heroic and glamorous than the image conveyed by some post-war reports, but which gives today's readers a much more realistic assessment of the entire spectrum of life in the RAF seventy years ago.

Allan Mallinson, military historian and former officer of the Light Dragoons, explains the complex historical and strategic background of Operation Herrick and describes the evolving tactical thinking in this multinational NATO-led campaign. Almost from the outset, the Light Dragoons, a small, close-knit family regiment recruited from Yorkshire and the north-east of England, were deployed in Helmand province, the main British area of operations. As an armoured reconnaissance regiment, they played a leading role in Operation Panther's Claw, the month-long battle in the scorching summer heat of 2012, which was marked by fierce fighting and heavy casualties and proved to be a turning point in the campaign. On Afghanistan's Plains describes what it was like to travel on foot in Helmand or to fight the Taliban crammed into an armoured vehicle. The later NATO commander in Afghanistan, US General Stanley McChrystal, paid the Light Dragoons the greatest compliment: As I looked into their bloodshot eyes, I was reminded of the extraordinary professionalism, competence and sheer courage of these young men.

The Royal Marines enthusiastically took on the role of Arctic combat troops on Norway's northern flank and became experts in this field. The idea was to deny the Russian submarine fleet access to the Norwegian fjords, which would have prevented the US from reinforcing Northern Europe. How did NATO and the British military implement this? Well, they sent the Royal Marines to Norway for three months of skiing every year, their military skills were further enhanced by sailing trips around the world, and every sporting activity was encouraged. Occasional deployments to Northern Ireland maintained internal security skills, but the big event was the invasion of the Falkland Islands by Argentine forces in April 1982. The Royal Marines effortlessly adapted their commando and Arctic warfare skills to not only brave the elements of a harsh winter in the South Atlantic, but also to overwhelm a numerically superior army 8,000 miles from the United Kingdom. The 42nd Commando of the Royal Marines played a significant role in this conflict, carrying out one of the most successful battalion-strength assaults since the Second World War on Mount Harriet.

It contains the first detailed narrative and analytical account from the personal perspective of a senior Foreign and Commonwealth Office expert who participated in numerous realistic and demanding verification activities at British and foreign military and commercial facilities, including the former Soviet nuclear weapons test site at Semipalatinsk in Kazakhstan. Drawing on the author's personal recollections, government documents from the National Archives, and official reports submitted to the Conference on Disarmament and other international meetings, the book compiles a fascinating and compelling account of an important but hitherto neglected part of the history of the Cold War and post-Cold War era. Despite the differences between nuclear, biological and chemical weapons and their means of production, the UK's verification exercises, described in detail here, have produced many common insights that apply to the design and implementation of on-site inspections, regardless of the treaty in question. In general, the verification of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons control is treated separately, but this book discusses all three areas in a unique, coherent overview of the lessons learned. In addition to the seriousness of the subject matter, the author also recounts the omnipresent humour and many other anecdotes that never made it into the official post-exercise reports.
