Other military operations occurring during the same period, however, have been largely ignored. This is the case for the war in India, which persisted throughout much of the era of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars, reaching its climax between 1798 and 1805 with the campaigns of Arthur Wellesleythe future Duke of Wellingtonand General Lake in the Deccan and Hindustan. For this reason, Martin Howards study is both timely and important. While fully acknowledging Wellingtons pivotal role, it also examines the nature of the warring armies, the significance of General Lakes campaigns in Northern India, and provides the reader with an understanding of the human experience of war in the region. This was a brutal conflict in which British armies clashed with the formidable forces of the Sultan of Mysore and those of the Maratha princes. There were dramatic battles at Assaye, Argaum, Delhi, and Laswari, and epic sieges at Seringapatam, Gawilghur, and Bhurtpore.

This work serves as the logical continuation of the web series of the same name by the same authorwhich was available on "The Napoleon Series" website from 2009 to 2019but has been significantly expanded: it now contains substantially more extensive biographical information, as well as biographies of key political figures involved in army administration and of the commanders-in-chief of all major command areas. Volume 5 covers, in meticulous detail, the artillery and engineering branches (the "Royal Artillery" and the "Royal Engineers"), as well as the "Royal Veteran" and "Garrison Battalions" within King George III's army during the era of the "Great War" against Franceand the men who commanded these units. The unit data provided includes concise histories of lineage and tradition, operational theaters and garrison locations relevant to the period, tables of authorized establishment strengths, and demographic data regarding the officer corps and the rank and file. At its core, however, the book focuses on the field officersthose Lieutenant Colonels and Majors who commanded these units; Volume 5 alone contains approximately 570 short biographies of men who held such commands. These biographies include details regarding dates of birth and death, family background, education, career paths (including political offices held), awards and honors, and residences.

This attentive, gripping, and well-written account from Corporal Robert Brown's diary describes raids and counter-marches alongside Austrian, Prussian, and Hanoverian contingents. The chronology of the Coldstream Guards' participation in the campaign is supplemented by maps of the battles of Lincolnes (August 18, 1793), Dunkirk (August 24 - September 6, 1793), Tourcoing (May 18, 1794), and Tournai (May 22, 1794).

The 4th Dragoon Regiment was involved in virtually every battle of the Spanish War of Independence from 1809 to 1814. It was a family regiment, with John and George Luard, Charles and George Dalbiac, Tom Fenton, and John Dalton all related to each other and serving at the same time. They left behind diaries and letters describing life in a cavalry regiment on the Iberian Peninsula and detailing the many actions they experienced. What makes With Wellington's Cavalry so extraordinary, however, is the fact that John Luard was also a talented artist and made numerous sketches of the places they visited on their journey across the peninsula, the people they met, and the battles they fought. All of these sketches are included in the book and convey a vivid picture of life in a cavalry regiment. At the time of Waterloo, the Luard brothers were serving in other cavalry regiments, but both survived unscathed and left behind magnificent descriptions of their role in this significant battle. The wealth of detail and numerous images make With Wellington's Cavalry a fascinating study of the impact of such a protracted conflict on relationships and give the reader a deep understanding of what it was really like to be there.

This book contains a detailed analysis of the attack by the French I Corps under Comte d'Erlon and the subsequent counterattack by the Allies at the Battle of Waterloo. This attack, involving 20,000 men and eighty cannons in the early afternoon of 18 June 1815, brought Napoleon closer than ever before to winning the battle. He was eventually repulsed narrowly by two stretched Allied infantry divisions and two cavalry brigades and was, as the Duke of Wellington himself said, one of the heaviest attacks of the enemy. Until now, there has been surprisingly little in-depth analysis of this crucial moment in the battle something this book seeks to remedy. Graeme Callister combines a detailed narrative with a thorough analysis of the sequence of events. All aspects of the attack are covered, from grand tactics to the human experiences at the front, taking into account the experiences, morale, leadership, constitution and cohesion of the soldiers. Using rarely analysed material from French regimental registers, the service records of those involved in the action are examined, as well as the eyewitness accounts and memoirs of those who survived. The book begins with an assessment of the background of each of the forces: their composition, command structures and the condition of their men. It then discusses how they found themselves in their positions on the battlefield, examining the grand tactics, the terrain and the overall strategic situation. The main part of the analysis focuses on the attack itself, looking at the formations and direction of the attacking forces (the four divisions of Quiot, Donzelot, Marcognet and Durutte, as well as the large battery and the supporting cuirassier brigade) and the tactical approach of the men who opposed them. Based on a wide range of primary sources, including those in French, English, Dutch and German, this book offers new perspectives on a crucial part of the history of Waterloo and helps us understand why men advanced or stood still, fought or fled, lived or died in the midst of the maelstrom of battle.

Even when Napoleon considered himself the ruler of Europe, he was unable to control the Mediterranean. Lieutenant John Hildebrand came to the Mediterranean in 1810 as part of the garrison of Malta. He was then involved in the defence of the island of Sicily, the conquest of the Ionian Islands, the siege of Ragusa and the occupation of Corfu. When the war ended in 1814, John and his regiment returned home, but were sent to Belgium in 1815 when Napoleon escaped from Elba. The regiment did not take part in the Battle of Waterloo, but was stationed at Hal, where it secured Wellington's flank during the battle. It then marched with the army to Paris. Edited and annotated by renowned historian Gareth Glover, these lively and entertaining memoirs are sure to find a wide readership among Napoleon enthusiasts and offer a fascinating counterpoint to Wellington's operations on the Iberian Peninsula.

To do so, however, he first had to capture the important border fortresses of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz. This would secure the main routes to Portugal and protect his supply lines. By mid-April 1812, Wellington's troops had captured both forts, and he began planning his advance into central Spain to liberate Madrid. At the end of July, he defeated the French army of Portugal at the Battle of Salamanca and was welcomed as a liberator by the people of Madrid a month later. In September, however, the offensive came to a standstill and French forces began to regroup. In October, the order came to abandon Madrid and retreat to Portugal. Wellington's army had to move quickly to avoid being cut off and losing its line of communication to Lisbon. The retreat soon turned into an arduous march in miserable weather conditions and with little provisions, while the British troops were pursued by a relentless enemy who was hot on their heels. It was not until the end of November that the army reached the safety of the Portuguese border. As in previous years, the Light Division was at the heart of the fighting. It was part of the attacking force in both the storming of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz. It led the army into Spain and was on the left flank at Salamanca. It was one of the first units to enter Madrid and was part of the rearguard during the retreat. By the end of November 1812, the division was back in its quarters around Ciudad Rodrigo. However, it had suffered terrible losses at all levels over the previous eleven months and was now a shadow of its former self. These new sources, particularly the diaries, are full of eyewitness accounts and previously unpublished material, allowing us to examine the movements and locations of the regiments, the effects of overstretched supply lines, and the arrival of reinforcements and new commanders as never before.

What must it have been like to live there? Without social welfare and with little charity, people lived solely on their wits and the sweat of their brow. There was a street vendor on every corner, a pickpocket in every crowd, and cheap gin was plentiful to drown every conceivable sorrow. What was it like to live in a smuggler's community where criminals made the rules and enforced them arbitrarily, brutally and without restraint? How could one survive a highwayman bent on taking one's wealth, dignity and, if necessary, one's life? But Georgian Britain also experienced a great flowering of art, commerce, industry and innovation. It was a time of great opportunity, if one had the means to seize it. Despite all its harsh realities, the Georgian era is also famous for its elegance and sophistication, for Josiah Wedgwood's ceramics, Thomas Chippendale's furniture, Capability Brown's landscaped gardens, the elegance of Georgian balls, Jane Austen's romantic and moving novels, but also for the ostentatious excesses of the Prince Regent and the sharp pen of the satirists. Let this book be your guide to the past and learn first-hand what moved people, what was whispered in the taverns and shouted in the streets. It was a time of excess, but also of great achievements, a time of change that transformed Britain forever.

and 149 of the series From Reason to Revolution 1721-1815. Volume 4 of the series King George's Army deals in detail with the 61st to 104th Foot Regiments of King George III's army during the wars against France from 1793 to 1815 and the men who commanded them. The regimental data includes brief regimental histories, places of service and dispositions for the respective era, combat awards, tables of authorised posts, demographic data on field officers and soldiers, and even the origins of recruits from the militia. However, the focus of the book is on the field officers, lieutenant colonels and majors who commanded the regiments. Volume 4 alone contains around 1,200 mini-biographies of men who held such commands, including their dates of birth and death, their ancestry, their education, their careers (including their political careers), their awards and honours, and their places of residence. Volume 5 will expand the scope and ultimately contain over 4,500 biographies from more than 200 regiments. These biographies show the regimental system in action, officers who were routinely transferred between regiments to advance or gain new opportunities, captains who were also (brevet) colonels, many who retired early, and some who rose to major general and beyond. Where possible, promotions by purchase, exchange or promotion have also been specified. Readers with military ancestors will undoubtedly find much of interest, and the author hopes that the work will help readers break down some walls, whether through connection to the officers recorded, through understanding the movements of regiments around the world, or through the patterns of volunteerism in militia regiments in the regular army. With its encyclopaedic scope and aim to be a lasting source of reference material on the British Army that fought against the French Revolution and Napoleon between 1793 and 1815, King George's Army. British Regiments and the Men who Led Them will hopefully be an indispensable addition to any library of military and family history literature for many years to come.

The first part of this book contains letters written by a British officer of the Royal Engineers who served in the army towards the end of the conflict with Napoleonic France. The first letter, written aboard his transport ship anchored on its way to continental Europe, is dated December 1813. The end of the war was only three months away, but before the defeated emperor abdicated, much blood was to be shed on both sides. Sperling was not destined for the southern theatre of war, but for the Netherlands, where Graham was tasked with subjugating Bergen-op-Zoom and Antwerp. The author's descriptions from an engineer's perspective provide interesting details, particularly his accounts of the various tasks he was assigned. At the beginning of 1815, Sperling was in Brussels and thus already in the war zone when hostilities broke out again after Napoleon made a last desperate attempt to regain power by escaping from his exile on the island of Elba. Sperling's personal experiences and descriptions of his work on the battlefield of Waterloo and afterwards are, of course, of essential importance. This valuable first-hand account is complemented in this edition by two excellent and detailed historical works by Porter and Connolly on the Royal Engineers and the Sappers and Miners, focusing specifically on the period covered by Sperling's letters. This edition includes maps and illustrations not found in any of the original editions of these works.

William Hay had a varied and exciting military career in the later years of the Napoleonic Wars, which took him to the Peninsula, to Waterloo and, after 1815, to Canada. After graduating from the Royal Military College at Marlow, about which he provides a rare account at the beginning of his memoirs, he first enlisted in the 52nd Light Infantry and served with that regiment in the campaigns of 1810 and 1811. After a promotion, he was transferred to the 12th Light Dragoon Regiment, and after a spell at home due to illness, he took to the field with his new regiment as Wellington's army retreated from Burgos. Hay then served for the remainder of the Peninsular War and again during the campaign of Waterloo in the 12th century. A well-connected young man, he spent part of his time away from the regiment on staff duties, serving as aide-de-camp to Lord Dalhousie in the Peninsula and later again for the same officer during his tenure as Governor-General of British North America. This edition of his memoirs is introduced and annotated by historian Andrew Bamford and includes additional information identifying places, people and events, as well as providing context to the original narrative.

Making extensive use of previously unpublished material, this book offers an unprecedented insight into the Waterloo campaign from the perspective of a single regiment. It shows the preparations leading up to the battle, the regiment's role in the battle and the long months the regiment spent in France after the fall of Paris until it finally returned home in December 1815. A command book for the year as well as letters and diaries of several officers provide information about the internal life of the regiment and its - sometimes humorous - social life.

While the regimental history by Percy Groves concluded that the early history of the regiment was missing due to the destruction of the records during the evacuation of Port-au-Prince in 1796, Gareth Glover has located the Orderly Book, which actually exists and is published here, with the addition of a transcript of the handwritten Standing Rules in Canada in 1801 and the Officer's Mess Rules in Jersey in 1802. Added to this are very brief memoirs of the 66th in the Peninsular War. These provide a valuable, unique record of the regiment for the period.

For a regiment as famous as the 42nd Regiment of Foot (The Black Watch), the number of published memoirs is surprisingly small. The discovery of three handwritten diaries in the collection of the National Library of Scotland, covering the period from August 1808, when the regiment left Gibraltar for Lisbon, to the end of 1813, is therefore of great importance to our understanding of the actions of this regiment during the Peninsular War. James Stirling was commissioned as an ensign in the 42nd Foot on 14 August 1805 at the age of thirteen, succeeding Ensign Thomas Munro. On 27 August 1807 he was promoted to lieutenant without purchase. Stirling served with the 42nd Foot on the peninsula from September 1808 to January 1809, then in Walcheren and again on the peninsula from May 1812 to August 1813 (from October 1812 as Aide de Camp to his father Major General James Stirling). After his father's retirement from active service, he joined the Portuguese army as a retired captain on 9 November 1813, where he remained until 13 October 1814. On 11 May 1815 he became a captain in the 42nd Regiment by purchase. He saw action in Walcheren, Corunna, Salamanca, Burgos, the Pyrenees, Orthez and Toulouse. He retired from the army in 1817 and died on 20 January 1818 at the age of just 25. These captivating and revealing diaries cover Captain James Stirling's entire active service with the 42nd Foot, as well as the time he served with the Portuguese forces until the end of 1813. His sudden death prevented him from completing the records of his service with the Portuguese army in 1814. Author Gareth Glover provides explanatory notes throughout, adding context to Stirling's commentary and making this book accessible to historians and enthusiasts alike.

Sir Arthur Wellesley's expedition to South America was immediately cancelled and diverted to the Iberian Peninsula. When the army finally landed in Portugal at the mouth of the Rio Mondego, it had few means of transport. However, as Wellesley remained close to the coast and received logistical support from the Royal Navy, he set off south to confront Marshal Junot and liberate Lisbon. The first battle took place at Obidos and days later Wellesley won his first victory against the French General Delaborde at the Battle of Rolica. As reinforcements were expected in the Bay of Maceira, the army was stationed in Vimiero to protect the landing. In the meantime, Junot had gathered his army and decided to attack Vimiero. In a short but hard-fought battle, Wellesley was victorious, but Generals Burrard and Dalrymple missed the opportunity to defeat the French completely and instead accepted a truce. This eventually led to the infamous Treaty of Sintra.
