Er rief das deutsche Volk zum "Totalen Krieg" auf. The Aufstellung der SS-Division "Hitlerjugend" war Teil dieses großen Plans des Führers. The original ideas of Artur Axmann, the Führer of the Hitler Youth, and the SS-Gruppenführer Gottlob Berger, the Chef of the SS-Hauptamtes and the true leader in the Recruitment in the Waffen-SS. Also covered are the personal items and ration packs carried within this gearthe very objects that give the book its title, as they were vital during marches, in combat, and, in many instances, for survival.

He examines the battles for liberation in Tessy-sur-Vire, Vire, the Forest of Saint-Sever, Champs-du-Boult, Gathemo, Chérencé-le-Roussel, the Forêt de la Lande Pourrie, Barenton, Domfront, and the Lonlay-lAbbaye region. By analyzing thousands of pages of records concerning the German divisions that opposed the U.S. 2nd Armored Division, he was able to re-evaluate every event and gain a deeper understanding of the suffering, courage, and selflessness displayed by both sides. This lends the narrative a human dimension that is rarely portrayed. A journey was required to compile over 800 pages of war diaries from this American divisiondocuments of which less than 10 percent had been utilized since the end of the Second World War. To further enrich this study, Guillaume Payan has reconstructed all of the divisions' staff maps using overlays based on original maps that have since been lost.

The beginning of 1945 boded ill for the Third Reich, as the Red Army stood practically at its borders. When the Soviets launched the Vistula-Oder Offensive on January 25, the Reich's easternmost territories fell rapidly, one after another. In this book, the author focuses on events in Kolberga quiet coastal town in Eastern Pomeraniawhich, for various reasons, became a focal point of German resistance against the enemy after the troops stationed there received orders to transform the town into a fortress. Kolbergs motley garrisoncomprising remnants of Waffen-SS veterans alongside newly recruited *Volkssturm* civilians with no combat experiencewithstood the Soviet onslaught and the assault of the Polish People's Army. They fought a slow, fighting retreat that ultimately achieved a remarkable objective: the almost complete evacuation of a vast number of civilians and combatants by seaall while under constant field artillery fire and subjected to air raids both day and night. Who truly won the Battle of Kolberg? Readers can form their own opinions by carefully reading the book's chapters, which guide them through the bitter fighting of this phase of the warstreet by streetto the once-peaceful port in Eastern Pomerania. All of this is complemented, among other features, by a selection of previously unpublished photographs provided by the Military History Museum of modern-day Kolobrzeg.

What was it like to be a citizen in the Third Reich? What were the worries and hopes of the Germans who lived through the madness of the Hitler years? How much of their time did they spend thinking about the war, and how much on more trivial concerns? How did they perceive the unfathomable violence that constituted one of the regimes primary instruments? What views did they hold regarding propagandaanother key instrument? What hopes did they harbor for the future following a victory, oras became increasingly likelyfollowing a defeat? Answering these questions has proven difficult, if not impossible, since the collapse of the Reich in 1945. While some Germans did write memoirs after the war, and others provided their testimonies through oral history projects, these sources are of rather dubious value; they are inevitably distorted by a high degree of rationalization and self-justificationgiven the stigma associated with having belonged to arguably the most notorious regime in human history. However, there exists a unique and extensive source that offers immediate insights into the mindset of Germans under Hitler: hundreds of top-secret reportstotaling 6,700 pagescompiled by the SS intelligence service between 1939 and 1945, which documented public sentiment on a wide range of topicsfrom assessments of the Nazi leadership to the price of vegetablesin minute detail. The information contained in these reports was derived from dispatches filed by a dense network of informants spanning the entire territory of the Reich. These informants represented every social stratum, every profession, and every walk of life. Since the SS had made it unequivocally clear that it desired no sanitized version of realitybut rather information that came as close as possible to actual conditions, in order to form a precise picture of public sentimentthere emerged in this way a veritable treasure trove of information regarding every aspect of life in the Third Reich. These reports cover a broad spectrum of topics: a single report might range from the relief citizens displayed in the face of a rumor regarding a peace settlement with the Soviet Union; to the complaints of elderly citizens concerning the rudeness of young Germansa stark contrast to the official image of cohorts kept under strict discipline during the Nazi era; to citizens' grievances about having to share doctors' waiting rooms with foreign laborersreflecting a high degree of everyday racism; as well as skepticism toward newspaper accounts regarding alleged British postwar plans for a defeated Germanya circumstance suggesting that the German population knew they were not being told the whole truth in the official media. Drawing in detail upon the original reports, Peter Harmsen offers insights into the thoughts and feelings of ordinary citizens who lived through the Third Reich.

When, in August 1944, formations of British and Canadian bombers reduce Königsberg to rubble and ash, the end of a seven-hundred-year history becomes inevitable. What follows is one of the most dramatic mass exoduses of the Second World War. In *Ostpreußen 1944*, Hermann Pölking constructs a polyphonic narrativewoven from diaries, autobiographical memoirs, local and regional historical accounts, official documents, and family loreto present the harrowing panorama of a society teetering on the brink of the abyss, yet blindly refusing to look into it.

This volume picks up exactly where the first book left off: with Knoblauchs experiences as an officer in the 1st Parachute Panzer Division "Hermann Göring." His account guides the reader through the highs and lows of his time in this armored Luftwaffe divisionfrom 1944 through to Hitlers death, Knoblauchs capture and time in captivity, and the end of the war. Supplemented by photographs and a comprehensive appendix, Knoblauchs gripping eyewitness account of his service in the Wehrmacht reaches a compelling conclusion in this volume.

This study employs original methodological approaches to examine the subject in an innovative manner. The first volume of a two-part series, this book covers the Tunisia Campaign, the battles for Italy, three of the four battles for Kharkov, the Siege of Leningrad, the defense of the Kuban region, the Battle of Kursk (encompassing both the German offensive and the massive Soviet counteroffensives), the German withdrawal from Ukraine and Central Russia, and the collapse of the southern sectors of the Eastern Front in the spring of 1944. Historian Ben Wheatley argues that the heavy losses Germany sustained during this period led to the strategic decision to reinforce the Eastern Front while neglecting the Western Fronta choice that ultimately resulted in the squandering of German panzer formations on the battlefields of Normandy. Drawing upon primary sourcesincluding contemporary aerial photography, cartographic materials, and detailed inventories of armored strengththis book deepens our understanding of some of the most renowned battles in military history.

In this book, Marc-André Ennas uncovers the inner workings of this ruthless apparatus, from its methods of indoctrination to its role in the crimes of the Third Reich. How did the SS forge a caste of men utterly devoted to Hitler, body and soul? What codes, ceremonies, and symbols defined them? From recruit training to the pagan cults established by Heinrich Himmlerincluding the specialized training centers and the influence of Germanic mythsthis study penetrates to the very core of the "Black Orders" mechanisms of power and manipulation. Drawing upon contemporary documents, eyewitness testimonies, and historical analyses, the author also traces the careers of key SS officers and sheds light on lesser-known aspects, such as the role of women and the place the SS occupies in the collective consciousness. This essay offers a comprehensive understanding of one of the most influential organizations of the 20th centuryan organization whose legacy continues to challenge our relationship with history and memory to this very day.

Three times he was sentenced to death for his crimes. After nine years of imprisonment, he was granted a pardon shortly before his death. In his hometown of Peine, Lower Saxony, Hartjenstein's fate remains unknown to this day. Only his great-nephew, Werner H., has spent decades attempting to investigate the dramatic life of his great-uncle and his involvement in Nazi crimes. In a gripping investigative account, Jürgen Gückel reconstructs the singular life trajectory of concentration camp commandant Friedrich Hartjenstein.

Of the millions of boys who absorbed the tenets of National Socialism between 1933 and 1945, most marched eagerly into wardesperate not only to secure Germanys supposedly rightful place but also to die for the man they regarded as their "father": Adolf Hitler. *To Die for Hitler* paints a portrait of this fateful erathrough the eyes of its most brilliant, albeit notorious, leaders, as well as the child soldiers they molded. Baldur von Schiracha social climber descended from both German and American aristocracyexpanded Hitlers youth organization from a few thousand members to millions. Artur Axmannas academically gifted as he was street-smartcreated a dedicated division specifically for them. Joseph Goebbelsthe "Svengali" of National Socialismcreated the very atmosphere they breathed. Bound by absolute loyalty to a single man, they forged the legions required for a very specificand ultimately disastrousobjective. It proved to be a monumental and galvanizing undertaking. For youths like those born in 1928, concepts such as "defeat" and "surrender" were simply unimaginable. At the age of sixteen, Rudi Schulz volunteered for the 12th SS Panzer Division "Hitlerjugend." His weeks as a member of an "anti-tank squad"amidst the decisive final battles in northern Germany during the last month of the warbecame a testament to his devotion and a secret he kept to himself for the rest of his life. The spirited Robert Ullrichwhose grandfather owned a prominent private bank in Colognefound in his training for the "Battle for the Reich" the very intensity and camaraderie for which he had yearned. Never truly growing up, he clung to the "Führer" and kept his Californian roots a closely guarded secreteven in those moments when his anti-aircraft battery was shooting down enemy planes over Vienna. The cosmopolitan Gerhard Wolf eagerly absorbed everything the Reich imparted to him through cinema, the school system, and youth training. Proud to serve in the ranks of the Waffen-SS, he later fought desperately for sheer survival as a teenage prisoner of war. These boys fulfilled the dream that had been promised to themright up to its unfathomable and tragic end.

Nearly 80 years later, the concept and scale of the Nazi program of genocide remain an indelibleindeed, almost unfathomablestain on human history. Yet it was a terrible reality, for whichas this compelling book demonstratesall too much evidence exists. Between 1941 and 1945, an estimated three and a half million Jews, along with an unknown number of other victimsincluding Soviet prisoners of war and Sinti and Romaperished in six camps established in Poland: Auschwitz-Birkenau, Belzec, Chelmno, Majdanek, Sobibor, and Treblinka. Uncomfortable as it may be, it does modern generations no disservice to be reminded of man's inhumanity to manif only to ensure that such atrocities are never repeated. This is precisely the purpose of this book: it traces the history of the so-called "Final Solution," as well as the construction and operation of the "Aktion Reinhard" campsfacilities built solely for the purpose of mass murder and genocide.

There, he served until the end of the war as Hitlers bodyguard, courier, orderly, and, ultimately, as head of the communications center. From the terrace of the Berghof, he observed Eva Braun organizing parties, took the measure of Heinrich Himmler and Albert Speer, andon July 20, 1944, following the assassination attempt on Hitlermonitored telephone calls between Berlin and the headquarters in East Prussia. As the war drew to a close, Misch retreated into the Führerbunker alongside the last remaining loyalists. As defeat loomed, he dutifully remained in charge of the bunkers telephone exchangecontinuing his duties even after Hitler had committed suicide. Misch knew Hitler as a private individual, and his attitude was characterized by unconditional loyalty. His memoirs offer an intimate glimpse into life in Hitlers immediate proximity, as well as into the endless hours spent deep within the bunker; moreover, they provide new insights into military eventssuch as Hitlers initial consideration of withdrawing the 6th Army from Stalingrad. Shortly before his death, Misch penned a new foreword for this English-language edition.

From that point onward, it navigated a field of tension defined by political reorientation, economic pressure, confessional ties, and the loss of traditional avenues of influence. Yet, the nobilitys role during the Weimar Republicand particularly under National Socialismis often reduced to sweeping generalizations: Did the nobility, as a collective entity, act as enablers for the National Socialists? Or were all members of the nobility, conversely, engaged in resistance? Drawing on fifteen contributions, the present volume examines the stance of the Rhenish nobility and selected key figures. These analyses rely primarily on previously untapped archival sources and eyewitness testimonies, painting a nuanced picture: situated between the poles of collaboration and resistance, a diverse spectrum of political gradations and individual patterns of action emergesdynamics that evolved significantly over the course of those years.

The book opens with the capture of Austrian infantryman Wolfram "Wolfie" Redler amidst the chaos that followed the fall of Stalingrad. It chronicles his forced march eastward as well as his transport to Siberia during the merciless Russian winter. Ravaged by typhus, he somehow manages to survive this "death camp." The narrative continues with his transfer to a labor camp, describing in harrowing detail the hardships that Redler and his comrades were forced to endure. That heor indeed anyone at allcould survive this borders on a miracle. Brutality, starvation, disease, and grueling forced labor took their toll on over ninety percent of the soldiers who fell into captivity during those first months of 1943. This honest and unvarnished accountnow translated into English for the first timestands as a powerful testament to the cruelty of war. Yet the greatest lesson of this book lies not in how we die, but in how we live. Despite all the suffering he witnessed and endured, "Wolfie" remained a man who showed everyone around him what it truly means to live.

After being transferred to the SS Division "Totenkopf," he fought in France and Russia. Following a run-in with civilians outside a cinema in Danzig, he was convicted and sent to the SS and Police Penal Camp in Danzig-Matzkau. There, he volunteered for probationary service with the SS Parachute Battalion, with which he served until the end of the war. During this timein 1945he was awarded the Iron Crosses 2nd and 1st Class, as well as two special badges for the single-handed destruction of enemy tanks. His memoirs, which are at times remarkably detailed, offer fascinating insights into this probationary unit of the Waffen-SS.
