As the most successful fighter pilot of the First World Warcelebrated both at home and among his adversariesRichthofen embodied an ideal of courage and skill that transcended national borders. His rise was rapid and extraordinary, spanning from his first aerial victory in 1916 to the awarding of the prestigious *Pour le Mérite* order. Yet, behind the mythfueled by a powerful and sophisticated propaganda machinelies a more complex story: that of a man who became a symbol far removed from the horrors of the trenches and was elevated into a beacon of hope for a nation shattered by war. Enriched by outstanding photographic documentation, this volume offers a comprehensive and compelling portrait of the Red Baron, placing his personal story within the broader context of the First World War. It is a journey between reality and legend, designed to truly understand the man behind the icon.

In a desperate bid to turn the tide of the Second World War, Hitler pinned his hopes on a terrifying arsenal of so-called "wonder weapons" designed for mass destruction and psychological terror. This richly illustrated volume from the "Images of War" series offers a comprehensive look at the V-1 flying bomb and the V-2 ballistic missilecollectively known as the *Vergeltungswaffen* (Retaliation Weapons). Through 150 rare and previously unpublished photographs, alongside expert analysis, supplementary text, and detailed captions, the book chronicles the development of these groundbreaking weapons, the construction of launch sites, and the missile production process that relied on forced labor from concentration camps such as Mittelbau-Dora. From the initial fixed V-1 launch sites in northern Franceparticularly the Pas-de-Calais regionto the shift toward mobile V-2 launchers that wreaked havoc not only on London and other English cities but also across mainland Europe (especially in France and Belgium), this book reveals the full story behind Hitlers final technological gamble. Although these weapons failed to alter the war's outcome, they ushered in a deadly new era of military history, claiming 18,000 livesthe vast majority of them civilians. A compelling and meticulously researched photographic record of ambition, cruelty, and the race for technological supremacy, *V-1, V-2 and V-3 Launch Sites* is essential reading for anyone interested in the Second World War, military innovation, or the dark legacy of Nazi science.

The modern ?weapons of mass destruction? were, in particular, machine guns and artillery, along with poison gas as a chemical weapon that kills silently. Alongside this new weapons technology, tanks and aeroplanes also made their appearance. To escape the anonymous mass deaths amidst the barrage of fire, the clouds of poison gas and the mud of the trenches, thousands volunteered for the air force. They are encouraged in this decision not only by a generally fostered enthusiasm for technology and flying, but above all by the image of the combative and death-defying flying hero propagated by the media. Thus, for example, Peter Falkenstein, a farmer?s son from the Eifel region of the Rhineland, emerges from the nameless ranks of frontline soldiers to attack cities and armaments sites in the enemy?s rear as the pilot of a heavy fighter aircraft. Beyond the physical destruction it causes, strategic aerial warfare aims to weaken the morale and willingness to defend themselves among the civilian population. The French and British air forces respond to the attacks by German airships and aircraft on London and Paris with bombardments of Rhineland cities such as Düsseldorf, Cologne, Koblenz and Trier. The German civil air defence countered these attacks with anti-aircraft guns and fighter squadrons. Thus, the Rhineland becomes the scene of an air war which, for its inhabitants, already foreshadows the horrors of the bombing terror of the Second World War. The end of the war in 1918 also marks the demise of the German air forces.

When the pilots' kill tallies became known after the war, they were initially met with disbelief. The highest reported figure stood at 352 kills, and more than 100 pilots had each achieved over 100 aerial victories. However, postwar investigations confirmed that these figures had been reported in good faith and that confirmations were granted only after rigorous verification. To uncover the secret behind this success, aviation historian Mike Spick examines the achievements of these aces and sheds light on the specific operational conditions they faced. He provides a detailed analysis of all major theaters of war and their unique characteristics: climate, numerical and qualitative strength ratios, the availability of radar and other systems, and the performance capabilities of the aircraft types employed. In doing so, he focuses on the methods and tactics used by individual aces, drawingwherever possibleon firsthand accounts to place the reader right alongside the pilot in the cockpit.

The more the creators considered this, the more concrete the idea became. True to the style of the main series, each appendix volume offers a predominantly statistical analysis of various aspects of the air battle, complemented by insightful text, original documents, and current research findings. This second appendix volume focuses on Luftwaffe fighter units during the Battle of Britain, presenting the information in a clear, user-friendly reference format. For each *Gruppe* (group), the volume lists the airfields used, the ten most successful pilots, and the total number of claimed victories and losses. Additionally, bar charts illustrate each group's claims and losses for every day of the battle. It is a unique reference work that serves as an excellent complement to the book series. The statistical data are drawn from various sources, with the majority contributed by Peter Cook, an expert on the Battle of Britain. Peter Cook has spent over 20 years compiling an impressive database on the Battle of Britainone that is unparalleled in its level of detail.

Led by Major General Dietrich Peltz, the operation targeted London and other English cities, including Bristol, Hull, and Portsmouth. Despite its ambitious goals, Operation Steinbock was poorly planned and executed. By 1944, the Luftwaffe's bomber force was a shadow of its former self, suffering from an acute shortage of trained aircrews, fuel, and modern aircraft, while British radar surveillance, night-fighter defenses, and anti-aircraft coordination had become highly sophisticated and extremely effective. A variety of Luftwaffe aircraft types were deployed in the attacks, ranging from the four-engined Heinkel He 177A to the Junkers Ju 188, Dornier Do 217, Junkers Ju 88, Messerschmitt Me 410, and Focke-Wulf Fw 190. Losses among the attacking forces were catastrophicover 500 aircraft were destroyed or damaged, resulting in the loss of irreplaceable aircrews. This represented 63% of the German aircraft committed to Operation Steinbock, with an average loss rate of 77 aircraft per month. Such losses brought the German bomber force to the brink of collapse. Peltz himself summarized the campaign after the war as follows: "In my opinion, the attacks on London and other British cities were like a drop in the oceana bit of a stir, but the whole thing was forgotten very quickly." Indeed, compared to the "Blitz" of 194041, the air raids caused only limited damage. Although approximately 1,556 people lost their lives, the attacks had little impact on British morale or industry. Operation Steinbock marked the Luftwaffe's final sustained, large-scale strategic night-bombing campaign against the United Kingdom during the Second World War. In this book, Luftwaffe historian Chris Goss chronicles not only the course of the campaign but also the response of the RAF and the Allies. As the author explains, Operation Steinbock highlighted the Third Reich's waning air power and the increasing futility of offensive operations in the face of Allied air superiority. The operation's failure also undermined the Luftwaffe's ability to counter the Allied air offensive that was to immediately precede the D-Day invasion.

Having been subjected to RAF air raids following the conclusion of their commerce-raiding missions in the Atlantic, three of the Kriegsmarine's most significant capital shipsthe battlecruisers *Scharnhorst* and *Gneisenau* and the heavy cruiser *Prinz Eugen*broke out of the Breton port of Brest. In a bold daylight "breakthrough," they traversed the English Channel, aiming to reach the ports of Wilhelmshaven and Brunsbüttel on the German North Sea coast. The operation was protected by a meticulously planned and equally audacious Luftwaffe air cover screen, codenamed "Operation Donnerkeil." The Luftwaffe deployed nearly 300 fighter aircraft and bombers for the mission; despite fierce aerial combatinvolving around 675 aircraft from RAF Fighter, Bomber, and Coastal Commandsthe Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe could rightly claim the "Channel Dash" as a triumph. In this study, aviation historian Chris Goss recounts the "breakthrough" and its aftermath from the perspectives of both sides, drawing on contemporary reports and documents as well as the latest research and analysis. His account is complemented by hundreds of rare photographs, color illustrations, and maps, combining to create the most detailed and compelling narrative of Operations "Cerberus" and "Donnerkeil" to date.

Born on June 13, 1918, he initially served as a day-fighter pilot in the Luftwaffe, flying the Messerschmitt Bf 110 during the early campaigns of the war. Lent's combat career began over the North Sea, Norway, and during the early phases of the Battle of Britain; however, in September 1940, his unit transitioned to night-fighter operations. As part of *Nachtjagdgeschwader 1* (Night Fighter Wing 1)and after initial self-doubts regarding his abilitieshe established himself as a formidable night-fighter pilot, adapting to the emerging technology of radar-guided interception. His preferred aircraft was the Messerschmitt Bf 110, though in 1944 he flew the Junkers Ju 88; he employed both types with devastating effect against Allied bombers conducting night raids over German territory. Of his 110 aerial victories, 102 were achieved at night. By 1943, Lent had risen through the ranks, eventually assuming command of *Nachtjagdgeschwader 3*. He received numerous decorations, including the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords, and DiamondsGermany's highest military honor. He was the first night-fighter pilot to be awarded this distinction, a fact that cemented his status as one of the leading figures in nocturnal aerial warfare. Lent's career came to an abrupt end on October 5, 1944, when his Ju 88 crashed during a landing attempt. Two days later, at the age of 26, he succumbed to his injuries. His standing within the Luftwaffe was such that *Reichsmarschall* Hermann Göring delivered the eulogy at his funeral. Based on Lents own logbooks as well as a unique collection of rare archival imagesand supplemented by surviving combat reports and documents from the Lent family archiverenowned aviation historian Chris Goss illuminates the life and military career of one of the most successful night-fighter aces of all time.

By day, the Flying Fortresses of the US Air Forces "Mighty Eighth" faced off against the day fighters of the *Luftflotte Reich*; then came the turn of Bomber Commands Lancasters to fend off the deadly predators of the night fighter force. Throughout the war years, the tactics and technology of Allied escort fighters evolved just as rapidly as those of their German interceptor counterparts. For the Allied airmen who fought in this war, the cost was appallingly high; for those who stood against themboth in the air and on the groundit was even higher. As the bombing campaign intensified, the German High Command found itself compelled to divert ever-increasing resources in an attempt to defeat the Allied air offensiveresources that were urgently needed elsewhere: both on the Russian Front and, following D-Day on June 6, 1944, on the new Western Front. This book, covering one of the most controversial campaigns of the Second World War, is written from the perspective of "the other side" and is told, as far as possible, through the words of the veterans themselves.

<img src='https://www.zinnfigur.com/out/pictures/generated/product/1/390_245_75/5731_545.jpg' border=0 align='left' hspace=5>A portrait of the Austro-Hungarian fighter pilot Eugen Bönsch. This publication guides the reader through the life of the Czech-German pilot, a native of the Giant Mountains, proprietor of the renowned Lucní Bouda mountain hut, and a pioneer of gliding in the region. Naturally, particular attention is paid to his military flying careerespecially his service with the most successful Austro-Hungarian fighter squadron, Flik 51J, on the Italian Front. The impetus for this book was the discovery of Bönsch's diary, over a century old, from the war years of 1917/18. In it, he describes, almost day by day, his entry into aviation, his pilot training, and above all, his combat missions over the Isonzo and Piave rivers with Flik 51J. The surviving diary, covering the period from mid-February 1917 to early May 1918, is a unique and valuable record of Austro-Hungarian fighter aviation and the air war on the Italian front. It offers numerous new insights, enriches existing archival holdings, and lends them a more personal and dramatic dimension. Bönsch's eyewitness account of the fierce engagement with British RFC fighters on March 30, 1918, near Ghirano airfield, even significantly revises the long-established British interpretation of this episode. Following Bönsch's wartime narrative, the book includes short biographical sketches of several pilots associated with his military service. The text is supplemented by tables summarizing the activities of Flying Company 51J and Eugen Bönsch, as well as by numerous documents and maps. Model builders will appreciate the colored profile drawings of the Albatros D.III (Oef) (various versions), Fokker B.II, Hanriot HD.1 and Sopwith F.1 Camel.

Founded in 1978 as a US-owned airline serving West Berlin, it became a defining German carrier after reunification and was for a long time the second largest airline after Lufthansa. Its combination of affordable fares, holiday routes, and business-class service made it unique and attractive to customers. Growth, acquisitions, and poor decisions led to its insolvency in 2017a watershed moment for the market. In this book, Kai Ortel tells the compelling and well-researched story of this very special airline.

The focus is not only on the models themselves, but also on the presentation of technological innovations and their significance. Three-view drawings, rare photographs, and technical data provide a complete overview of this important topic in aviation.

The aircraft, with its distinctive gull wings and characteristic dive-bombing siren, saw action throughout the war and on almost every front, proving particularly effective in its early years of service. Nearly 6,000 aircraft left the Junkers production line by 1944. This volume, with its wealth of detail and contemporary photographs, is undoubtedly the best book currently available on the Stuka.

It was revolutionary in every respect. Dr. Wernher von Braun's team laid the foundation for all rocket development with its construction. Ultimately, this led to the successful American moon landing in 1969. This documentary, featuring rare photographs and outstanding graphics, describes in unprecedented depth the development and also the devastating wartime use of the world's first large-scale rocket, known as the V-2 ("Retaliation Weapon 2").
