The Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 changed the political map. The Kingdom of Bavaria was absorbed into the German Empire. It was able to retain its army, but this now became part of the Imperial Army. The volume deals with times of upheaval: the war of 1870/71 stands at the threshold between traditional warfare and the industrialised wars of the 20th century. The period of peace that followed until 1914 was marked by rapid change, which transformed both the military and society. The book contains all the objects on display in the exhibition. In addition, a section of essays provides insight into the political and, above all, military developments of the era. With contributions by Ansgar Reiß, Oliver Stein, Mareike König and Dieter Storz, as well as catalogue texts by Daniel Hohrath, Priscilla Pfannmüller, Tobias Schönauer and Oliver Stein.

In June 1866, three Prussian armies marched into Bohemia and defeated the hastily assembled Austrian troops that stood in their way. The defeated Austrians retreated to the town of Königgrätz (now the Czech city of Hradec Králové) on the Elbe River, where their reserves were waiting. The battle began on 3 July and ended in victory for the Prussians. Historian Angus Konstam examines this decisive battle of the Austro-Prussian War and sheds light on what the Prussian victory meant for the political landscape and how it led to the emergence of the modern German state. With illustrations, detailed maps and historical images, this book also shows how important the advanced technology of the industrial age was and how modern tactics were used against the old style.

The forms of violence in the colonial context of East Africa (1885 to 1918) went beyond guerrilla tactics and a scorched earth policy. They claimed hundreds of thousands of civilian lives. Tanja Bührer describes decisive battles throughout the colonial period in which African warring parties also took the initiative to attack the foreign invaders, placing them in the broader context of European expansion at the fin de siècle. The series Kriege der Moderne (Wars of the Modern Age), published by the Centre for Military History and Social Sciences of the German Armed Forces, makes the latest research findings accessible to a wide audience. The most important military crises and armed conflicts of the past centuries are vividly presented and analysed, both in terms of the course of the conflicts and in relation to political and cultural contexts.

In this context, the photographs of the Potsdam 1st Garderegiment zu Fuß, the Hohenzollern's personal regiment, form the main focus of this book and at the same time show everyday military life in the city. In keeping with tradition, all Prussian kings until 1918 were always the heads of this regiment. In a time, therefore, in which the Prussian military occupied a respected position in society. In addition, the military historian Volker Schobeß presents all the then famous Potsdam Guards Regiments under Kaiser Wilhelm I in their colourful skirts. The colourful uniform panels of the Potsdam Guards are dedicated to Emperor Wilhelm I and the victorious military campaigns of 1870/71. The painter Carl Friedrich Schindler had put together every single Potsdam military branch for a well-meaning readership.

It was fought for the most part in dreadful weather conditions which subjected its participants to extremes of physical hardship. The culmination of the campaign was the battle of Le Mans, which tested the armies on both sides to an even greater extent than the months which had gone before. For the French, the indomitable Alfred Chanzy was by some way the ablest of their generals; notwithstanding the series of defeats sustained by his 2nd Army of the Loire, he never gave up. Less fortunate was General Claude dAurelle de Paladines, whose tenure in command of the Army of the Loire was marked by the abominable mistreatment which he suffered at the hands of Charles de Freycinet, the "delegate" appointed by Leon Gambetta to support him in carrying out his duties as Minister of War. The author has previously examined two of the other campaigns directed to the relief of the capital. In "The Somme, 18701871. The Winter Campaign in Picardy", he traced the campaign of the Army of the North, under General Louis Faidherbe, which ended in failure at St Quentin on 19 January 1871.The second of these relief campaigns was mounted from the south-east of France, by the Army of the East, led by General Charles-Denis Bourbaki. After defeat at the battle of the Lisaine on 1618 January by the German Corps led by General August von Werder, Bourbaki was compelled by the advancing Südarmee under General Edwin von Manteuffel to retreat into Switzerland, and surrendered there. The author described this campaign in "The Last Throw of the Dice. Bourbaki and Werder in Eastern France 18701871".

The letters, which came to the Hessian house archive as the inheritance of their youngest daughter, Margarethe Landgravine of Hesse (18721954), are a unique record of the couple's intimate relationship. They wrote to each other daily when they were separated. The wars were a time of separation including the 1866 Austro-Prussian War. In the 156 private letters, one becomes an immediate witness to both the family tragedy - their two-year-old son Prince Sigismund died of meningitis and the events of the war, which had geopolitical consequences. Her writing style is unconventional - "private jargon" - and "unreserved", although the fear that her letters might be intercepted is ever-present. More than 130 original portrait photos from historical photo albums illustrate this source edition and also put a face to many of the names mentioned.

Using the extensive archival legacy of the first German emperor and his entourage, previously unknown to research, this study embeds the life and times of Wilhelm I in a comparative European context and provides new answers to the questions of what political role he played as heir to the throne and ruler at the Berlin court and what influence he exerted on the development of the Hohenzollern monarchy between the Vormärz and the foundation of the empire. The person of Wilhelm I is an exemplary reflection of the ambivalent multifunctionality of the monarchy as an institutional motor, but also as an inhibiting factor of political modernization. During the Vormärz period, in the role of the Kartätschenprinz, he played a key role in plunging the Prussian kingdom into the crisis of the revolutions of 1848/49. In the years that followed, however, he pushed for the nationalization of the throne and state and led Prussia on the path to the German Empire. Ultimately, Wilhelm I must be credited with the political directive of the foundation of the empire.

This book describes the final conflict over the now almost forgotten "Schleswig-Holstein question", which was once a decisive issue for the great powers of Europe. The Schleswig and Jutland campaign was also the first of Otto von Bismarck's wars of German unification, which together created a united German Empire under Prussian leadership. This conflict was the first in which one of the protagonists' armies was equipped exclusively with breech-loading rifles; military telegraphy, rifled and cast-iron artillery and armoured warships were also used on a large scale. The detailed story of this last 'Cabinet War' is told here for the first time in English and compiled from numerous published and unpublished sources, including many contemporary and first-hand accounts as well as official reports. This is an invaluable resource for anyone studying the mid-19th century. Among the most important topics are:<br>The historical background of the conflict; The political crisis of 1863, the intervention of the German Parliament and the development up to the war; Complete descriptions of all military and naval forces involved; The first phase of the war - the defence and retreat from the Danewerken; The siege and defence of the Düppeler Schanzen ance; the Jutland invasion of the Allies and the naval war, including the Danish blockade of the northern German ports; the first armistice, the attempts of the London Conference to hold peace talks and its failure; the final phase of the conflict, in particular the Prussian conquest of the island of Als.

It not only reflected the federal statehood of the empire founded in 1871, but also the traditionally differently uniformed and equipped branches of the army. This is particularly evident in this volume, which for the first time presents the clothing and equipment of the military retinues of all federal princes and the household troops between 1871 and 1914. The first part of the book deals with the military retinue of the German princes. These were officers assigned to the kings, grand dukes, dukes, princes and regents (e.g. in Bavaria between 1886 and 1913). They were distinguished from the troop officers by their special uniform insignia. The household troops presented in the second part, such as the Prussian Castle Guard Company and Life Guards, the Hessian Guard NCO Company, the Württemberg Castle Guard Company and the Bavarian Hartschiere, were characterised by particularly splendid uniforms. The Prussian mounted infantry corps, the orderlies of the Grand Duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach and the Gotha castle guard corps are also covered - although they are not domestic troops in the strict sense. In addition, the gala dress of the Prussian regiment of the Gardes du Corps and the 1st company of the Mecklenburg Grenadier Regiment No. 89 is also covered. This volume follows on from the volumes already published on the German cavalry, infantry, generals, artillery, pioneers and railway from 1871 to 1914. As in the previous volumes, important public and private collections made it possible to provide a rich selection of illustrations of original items of clothing and equipment. Many of these are being published for the first time. Contemporary, mostly previously unpublished photos complement the colour photographs.

Long-established families produced several generations of participants in the wars of the 19th century. Others were commissioned as officers in the regiments stationed in Hamm, including members of nationally recognised aristocratic houses. Another centre of attraction was the Higher Regional Court, which brought numerous lawyers to Hamm, who themselves or through their sons were connected to the military.<br><br>The Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 and the creation of the German Empire were a particular highlight. In several districts of Hamm and the surrounding villages, street names and monuments as well as memorial plaques in the churches commemorate the events and theatres of war at that time and the fate of many war victims. In addition, Hamm not only cared for wounded and sick soldiers, but also housed numerous French prisoners of war. A special feature of the cemetery on Ostenallee are the preserved cemetery plots where Germans and Frenchmen who died as a result of the war were buried side by side. Their origins and family affiliations have been researched and documented for the first time. A further chapter is devoted to the doctors and clergy of all denominations who worked in the emergency hospitals. Finally, the voluntary help for the sick, which was organised in the Hammer Women's Association, should also be mentioned in this context.<br>This resulted in a large number of people from the most diverse social classes whose individual fates are portrayed in this work.

In the first decade of the twentieth century, however, a series of scandals derailed this emancipatory project. Simultaneously, public debates began to invoke homosexuality, sadism, transvestism, and other sexological concepts to criticize military policies and practices. <br>In pursuing the threads with which queer authors and activists stitched their fantasies about uniforms, Jeffrey Schneider offers fresh perspectives on key debates over military secrecy, disciplinary abuses in the army, and German militarism.<br><br>Drawing on a vast trove of materials ranging from sexological case studies, trial transcripts, and parliamentary debates to queer activist tracts, autobiographies, and literary texts, "Uniform Fantasies" uncovers a particularly modern set of concerns about such topics as outing closeted homosexuals, the presence of gay men in the military, and whether men in uniform are more masculine or more insecure about their sexual identity.

At the time, Richard Knötel was not only a well-known German history painter, but also a recognised authority in the field of uniform studies. It was therefore logical to entrust him with the majority of the designs for the exhibits. A total of 83 soldier figures were exhibited, some on foot and some on horseback, including 10 figurines for Bavaria, 55 figurines for Prussia and 9 figurines each for Saxony and Württemberg. The designs for Prussia and Württemberg, i.e. for a total of 64 figurines, came from Professor Richard Knötel. The designs for the Bavarian figurines came from the history painter Louis Braun from Munich.<br><br>The designs for the Saxon figurines were created by the painter G. Müller from Dresden. All the figurines were modelled by the sculptor Paul Werner from Berlin. The horse figurines were supplied by the court purveyor Bock from Berlin. The figurines were arranged in five groups for the eras 1680 to 1739, 1740 to 1807, 1808 to 1842 and 1843 to 1863 as well as for royal household troops from 1775 onwards. Originally, two further groups were planned with the uniforms of the German Empire in 1899 and the uniforms of the colonial troops around 1900. However, these groups were cancelled following intervention by Kaiser Wilhelm II. The aim was to avoid confronting the French public with uniforms that resembled those from the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. The Royal Prussian War Ministry published a richly illustrated catalogue for the exposition, which we published as a reprint in volume 1 of our digital print edition in 2022. Of the figurines exhibited at the 1900 exposition, only five from the Württemberg contingent have survived and are in the collection of the Rastatt Museum of Military History. There is also a collection of surviving design drawings for the figurines and a catalogue in which, among other things, the sizes of the figurines are specified. This interesting bundle was in the estate of the sculptor Paul Werner. It was acquired by WGM Rastatt in 1995 and is published in this book edition.<br><br>Curt Hoffmann: Curt Hoffmann, born in 1932, learnt the trade of lithographer after the Second World War and later studied cartography, graduating as a graduate engineer (FH) and then geography, graduating as a graduate geographer. In his 51-year working life, he worked for 45 years at the State Surveying Office of Saxony and retired in 1997. Since then he has been involved in digital image processing and has been active as a journalist and writer. He edits the illustrations and book layout for his books himself, right up to uploading the print files to the publisher's print shop. His books are published as digital print editions. In addition to good image reproduction, this has the advantage of long-term availability, as there is no need to print limited editions. He prints what is ordered, an innovation that was only made possible by digital printing, and working on his books has become a challenge for the ninety-year-old, who is severely disabled and suffers from failing eyesight. He has ensured the continued existence of his books by appointing legal successors. The second volume of a two-volume edition on the 1900 German Army Uniforms Exposition in Paris presented here publishes surviving sketches of the figurines from the holdings of the Rastatt Museum of Military History. The first volume contains a digitally restored reprint of the exhibition catalogue.
