Precisely for this reason, it has garnered significant public attention against the backdrop of contemporary crises. This volume presents the findings of a 2023 conferenceheld to mark the centenary of the French-Belgian occupation of the Rhenish-Westphalian industrial regionsupplemented by additional contributions. It examines transnational dimensions of politics, law, and violence; economic aspects; issues of migration and mobility; and local and regional concerns. Twenty-eight essays address perspectives previously neglected by scholarship and demonstrate the far-reaching impact of this conflict played out within the region. The volume thus contributes to the historiography of the Ruhr Crisis and to an understanding of the regional dimension of an international conflict.

For the first time in English, this book traces the activities through which the Polish diaspora supported the restoration of an independent Polandincluding the recruitment of an army of over 100,000 men that fought on the Western Front alongside the French. It covers the founding of the Polish White Cross, which provided medical and other aid to the troops, as well as the "Grey Samaritans," who served as social workers to bring relief to the newly independent nation. The book also follows the Polish army in France on its journey to post-war Poland, where it repelled a Bolshevik invasion; likewise, it tracks the relief organizations that followed the army to assist the civilian population, which was suffering from the ravages of war, population displacement, and widespread hunger and disease. No other ethnic diaspora came even close to matching the political pressure, military contribution, and humanitarian relief efforts provided by Polish communities living abroad throughout the world.

This collection of scholarly essays examines the various occupation regimes during the First World War. During the First World War, vast, densely populated regions of Central and Southern Europe were occupied. The volume analyzes the experiences of occupation from the perspectives of both the occupiers and the people in the occupied territories. The occupation led, among other things, to economic exploitation and mass emigration. The symposium will present various models of occupation policy, including the Russian occupation of Galicia and Bukovina, as well as the Austro-Hungarian and German occupations of Russian Poland, Ukraine, and Serbia. Just as today, more than 100 years ago Russian imperialism denied the national sovereignty of the Ukrainians.

But it also survives in objects: uniforms, dog tags, everyday items, and fragments that still bear the marks of their time and tell something of the men who once possessed them. Precisely because they have been through hell, bearing the marks of suffering, they become relics. Those who preserved and passed them on transformed them, in a sense, into sacred memoriesof the returning soldiers and the fallen. Testimonies of a transition, a final gift. This volume arose from an interest in these material memories and a desire to share them: to preserve them, to research them, and to tell their stories. Over time, the guardians of these fragments of memory often changed, but the intention always remained the same: to keep the past alive through something that still touches our hearts and minds.

Hundreds died in avalanches, and tens of thousands fell in battles of attrition, often for minimal territorial gains. Serious leadership errors in the initial phase and militarily senseless actions on both sides increased the losses of Italians, Austrians, and soldiers of other nations. The victory at Flitsch-Tolmeinthe Italian debacle of Caporettoand the advance to the Piave River represented a victory that ultimately only prolonged the demise of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. What remained was a devastated landscape, shattered families, and broken livesand the seeds of the Second World War. Gross leadership errors in the initial phase and militarily pointless actions on both sides increased the losses of Italians, Austrians, and soldiers of other nations. Historian Peter Schubert has been studying this front for over 50 years. He has written seven books and numerous articles on First World War topics, worked with Walther Schaumann, and in that capacity contributed to the development of the "Peace Trails," open-air museums, and the museum in Kötschach-Mauthen. His book on the fighting on the Isonzo was published in German and Italian, and his book on the Piave battles in German, Italian, and Slovenian. Most recently, he published two volumes as a guide to historically important sites along the "Peace Trails" in Italy, Austria, and Slovenia. In this book, Schubert presents a modern account of the events, drawing on sources and narratives from both sides. It is as well-researched as it is compelling, even though he deliberately avoids the heroic tales and legends that have often been used to obscure the truth.

Even today, this sensitive, complex, and problematic topic is often discussed superficially and thoughtlessly, based on well-known cases and clichés. Understanding history, however, also means searching in dark corners and bringing to light what has been deliberately concealed or hidden for years. The author has the courage, without presuming judgment, to continue the research of those who have previously addressed this subject. This continuation of the investigation does not simply recount familiar episodes but illuminates over 400 execution cases, meticulously examined using archival methods, official sources, witness testimonies, family members, and documents hidden for decades. This publication does not mark the end of the study of executions; rather, it provides a solid foundation for future research and perhaps a more objective understanding of history.

He was ordered to lead his troops in an attack on the Turkish positions, but to the dismay of his commander-in-chief, Anastasios Papoulas, he decided to follow his own battle plan. After three weeks of bitter fighting, Papoulas ordered a retreat and blamed Prince Andrew for the defeat. The final defeat of the Greek army in Asia Minor came in August 1922 and led to the revolution of 11 September 1922 in Athens, which banished Prince Andrew from his homeland for life. Towards Disaster is Prince Andrew's own account of the campaign in Asia Minor, in which he defends his actions during the Battle of Sakarya, a battle he considered hopeless and in which he was careful to avoid unnecessary loss of life.

A volume from the Asia @ War series. Against the backdrop of escalating rivalry between China and India, Air Power in the Indo-Pacific examines how the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) and the Indian Air Force (IAF) might behave in conflict, how great the discrepancy between India and China is in terms of air power, and whether the existing numerical imbalance gives China a clear and undeniable advantage. Volume 2 examines the history, culture, organizational structure, force structure, operational planning and combat readiness, and capabilities of the Indian Air Force in the present and near future. Given China's demonstrations of power, it is crucial for India and the world to understand the challenges facing the PLAAF. A systematic and rigorous examination of the operational capabilities of the IAF and the PLAAF has not yet been conducted. Despite a large and growing body of work on China's overall military capabilities, the literature on the operational dynamics of the PLAAF and the IAF during wartime remains sparse and underdeveloped. Understanding the history, organization, culture, and weapon systems of both the IAF and the PLAAF, as well as their development in the near future, is important for assessing their warfighting capabilities. Air Power in the Indo-Pacific attempts to understand the interactions between the key determinants of modern warfare, such as technology, strategic advantages in high-altitude air warfare, tight organization, leadership, weapon platforms, combat experience, force structures, doctrine and operational concepts, training, geography, weather, and distance, in order to better understand the warfare capabilities of the IAF and PLAAF. Air Power in the Indo-Pacific provides an understanding of India's past and present approaches to air power and offers an important basis for assessing future challenges. This volume covers the history of the IAF, its culture, organization, doctrine, logistics, bases and infrastructure, technological modernization, ORBAT of the Western Air Command and Eastern Air Command, air bases, training at home and abroad, AWACS, EW, and ELINT aircraft, air defense in Leh, Ladakh, and the eastern sector, and network-centric warfare.

From the wild fields of the Cossacks to the ground zero of drone warfare: for centuries, the Donbass has been Europe's military melting potthrough industrial armament, the Russian Civil War, Soviet domination, and the unrest of the 1990s. Today, this once-forgotten industrial heartland has become a battlefield laboratory where AI, autonomous weapons, and decentralized tactics are redefining 21st-century warfare. When Belgian industrialists transformed the barren steppe into the Russian Empire's arsenal in the 1860s, they laid the foundation for a region that would continually reshape warfare. British engineer John Hughes built Donetsk, which armed the tsarist armies. Bolsheviks and White Guards fought their bloodiest battles here, and during the Holodomor, Stalin squeezed the region's grain reserves to finance his war machine. After the collapse of communism, this once-powerful industrial complex fell into disrepair along with the once-proud Soviet army, becoming a rust belt of outdated 19th-century machinery and economic ruin. Until 2014, when volunteer fightersoften soccer hooligans with hockey sticksdefended the Euromaidan revolution in Kyiv and marched east to confront Russian-backed separatists. Donbass shows how decentralized innovation has replaced state monopolies in warfare. Discover how crowdfunded drone units, battlefield hackers, and AI developers have created a people's military-industrial complex that NATO generals cannot replicate. From FPV kamikaze drones to autonomous targeting systems, this book reveals the technological arms race that is changing combat while traditional armies remain mired in bureaucratic paralysis. This is essential reading for military historians, defense analysts, and anyone who wants to understand the economic background of how modern warfare has evolved from industrialized battles to AI-assisted fields - and why the future of conflict may be decided by startups rather than states.

An unlikely ally of Ibn Saud emerged when the French destroyed Hashemite Syria, before he launched a final war to conquer the Hejaz and destroy the enemy kingdom. The holy cities of Islam were not spared the horrors of war when drunken Russian mercenary pilots bombed them from the air on behalf of the Hashemites, Lawrence's old allies. The overly aggressive and independent fundamentalist Ikhwan sect was Saud's iron fist during his wars, but later became a problem for the king to deal with when they brought Saudi Arabia to the brink of war with the British Empire due to their constant raids on the Bedouins in Iraq and Transjordan. Glubb Pasha had to learn to deal with them using the air force and armed vehicles, adapting British tactics to the harsh reality imposed by the Bedouins in the desert. Ibn Saud was forced to suppress his Ikhwan in the ensuing civil war, in which the rebel cavalry was slaughtered in 1929 at the Battle of Sibillah and subsequent campaigns by the machine-gun fire of a fledgling modern Arab army. Ibn Saud ended his wars of unification when he invaded Yemen in 1934 to conquer the last remnants of the Kingdom of Asir, creating an enmity that continues to this day. Swords of Saud Volume 2 provides an indispensable military history of the origins of the modern state of Saudi Arabia for military enthusiasts and professionals seeking a deeper understanding of the history of this region.

Nowhere in Canada was the impact of the First World War felt more keenly than in Nova Scotia. There are countless stories of Nova Scotian soldiers and their extraordinary service. While it is impossible to tell them all, "Service and Sacrifice. Extraordinary Nova Scotians in the Great War" highlights ten remarkable stories of service and sacrifice to recognize and honor all those who wore the Canadian uniform. From the courageous deeds of Indigenous soldier Sam Glode, who cleared more than 450 mines and explosive devices from roads and bridges in two days, to Jerry Jones, a Black soldier from Colchester County whose bravery was only recognized posthumously, to nurse Minnie Follette, whose devoted service to wounded and dying soldiers ultimately cost her her life. This diverse group of Nova Scotians is representative of the more than thirty thousand people who accepted and fulfilled the difficult duty of citizenship, regardless of creed or custom. With more than 90 images, Service and Sacrifice tells these stories in a way that honors the sacrifices made, sparks new interest in Nova Scotia's rich military history, and contributes to a better understanding of the real people who gave so much of themselves for others.

The first major tank offensive took place on 20 November 1917, south-west of the northern French town of Cambrai. Seven British divisions and the entire Tank Corps attacked a section of the so-called Siegfried Line. The well-developed but rather weakly manned defence system was breached by the British attackers at the beginning of the battle. However, leadership errors and increasing German resistance prevented complete operational success. Ten days later, the German divisions surprised the British enemy with a counterattack and recaptured the lost territory. In his book, Karsten Richter describes the background, the course of the battle, selected military cemeteries as places of remembrance, and special events related to this operation. Cambrai 1917 marks the starting point of mechanised warfare in the 20th century.

With numerous colour illustrations and QR codes for access to additional content, this is military history with a difference. Part history book, part travelogue and part battlefield guide, Thunder in the Mountains tells the extraordinary story of battles fought in the most inhospitable of environments, from the howling wilderness of the arid Karst Plateau to the avalanche-ravaged mountains of the Dolomites. Against a beautiful backdrop, incredible feats of arms were accomplished as men dug tunnels in ice, blew up mountain peaks and made progress measured in vertical metres. The author spent six years exploring the battlefields and researching the subject. In addition to the well-researched text, 149 photographs and 26 maps help readers understand the scale and difficulties of mountain warfare and appreciate the wild beauty of these battlefields. In a radical departure from other military history books, Thunder in the Mountains also includes QR codes that link to additional photographs, maps, videos, animations, and downloadable battlefield walks. This additional content can be viewed alongside the text, giving readers a deeper understanding of this incredible conflict.

After signing a treaty with Germany, Russia's withdrawal from the war gave Germany and Turkey access to the oil fields in Baku. Oil was crucial to the war machine and therefore a precious commodity. Concerned that Germany and the Ottomans would gain access to the oil fields, Britain, under Major General Dunsterville, assembled a multinational force called Dunsterforce, which set out for Baku to stop the Turkish advance. Deteriorating relations between Germany and Turkey led both countries to try to keep each other at bay while simultaneously fighting the British forces, the Bolsheviks and the White Russians. The rise of Bolshevism in the region, supported by the Jangalis, was also a cause for concern for Britain, as it feared it could spread to British interests in Central Asia and India. With illustrations, detailed maps and historical images, this book delves into the highly political campaign to secure the oil in Baku in 1918 and examines the far-reaching consequences of involvement in this region.

Over 8 million horses died, as did tens of thousands of dogs, cats and pigeons. They lost their lives transporting artillery, rescuing the wounded, fighting vermin and delivering messages. Most died without recognition, but a few survived and became animal stars. Warrior, the happiest horse on the Western Front, became a horse hero; Rin Tin Tin, a German shepherd, was born in the trenches and later starred in over 30 films; Percy the cat served in one of the first tanks; and Cher Ami, a carrier pigeon, saved a US battalion from certain death. Other animals used in the war included baboons, bears, camels, donkeys, elephants, maggots, pigs, ponies, snails and even whales. In contrast to the animals used in the war, mosquitoes, lice and rats spread disease; in Salonika, more men died of malaria than from enemy fire. At home, many families kept chickens, rabbits or pigs, while elephants replaced horses on the roads and fields, pulling carts and ploughs. This book commemorates the role of animals throughout the conflict and tells the story of how all creatures, large and small, contributed to winning the First World War.

During the Russo-Japanese War, he travelled to Japan to procure weapons and money for a Polish uprising. During the First World War, he skilfully navigated a dangerous tightrope. He formed the Polish Legion to fight alongside the Central Powers against the Russians. In the final stages of the war, he distanced himself from the Central Powers and secured Poland's independence. After achieving his great goal of a free Poland, he waged a series of wars. These little-known conflicts (with Ukraine and Lithuania) are illuminated by Evan McGilvray. When it became clear that Bolshevik Russia was preparing to invade Poland, Pilsudski launched a pre-emptive strike in 1920. Despite initial successes, the Russians managed to gain the upper hand and were on the verge of Warsaw before Pilsudski's masterful counterattack brought about the Miracle on the Vistula and turned the tide. This is a long-overdue study of a key figure in modern European history.

Can the First World War be reduced to the Western Front, stretching from the North Sea to the Swiss border and the famous trenches? The British Western Front, the German Western Front, the French Front de l'Ouest, which the General Staff reduced to the north and north-east of France, was considered the most important and decisive front at the time. However, the war of 1914-1918 was not just a war of trenches, earthworks, major offensives, bombardments, mines and soldiers waiting in the cold and mud. It was also marked by major naval operations, troop deployments, expeditionary corps, raids, special operations and forward operating bases. This book aims to shed light on some little-known or hardly known military aspects of this conflict. While the deployment of thousands of African soldiers in Europe is now well documented, the conflict experienced by hundreds of thousands of Africans, thousands of Indians and a handful of Europeans in Africa remains largely unknown, at least in France. Is it well known that while the Russian army suffered heavy setbacks in East Prussia, it inflicted a crushing defeat on the Ottoman army in the Caucasus with significant consequences? That a British army in Mesopotamia was lured into a trap by the Ottomans? That the entrenched camp at Salonika was undoubtedly one of the best ideas of the First World War? Far from Verdun, the author takes us on a journey of discovery through this other Great War in Europe, Asia, Africa, in unexpected regions, from Galicia to Mesopotamia, from Namibia to China, in the mountains, deserts, forests, cities and oceans of the world.

This book reconstructs one of the most dramatic and fascinating episodes of the Dolomite front during World War I based on historical, partly unpublished military diaries. Col di Lana 19151916 is set in the broader context of mine warfare in the Dolomites (34 mines exploded along the entire front), but illustrates why this mountain in particular had such a strong impact on the collective imagination. With a tragic loss of around 11,000 Italian casualties compared to 462 Austrian soldiers, Col di Lana became a symbol of a war that changed military tactics in the Alps forever. Combining historical accuracy, compelling narrative, and strategic analysis, this book is aimed at both specialists in World War I and readers interested in military history who want to understand one of the most symbolic episodes of the Dolomite conflict. Even today, the mountain still holds the remains of the fallen: between 1992 and 2018, the bodies of more than twelve unknown soldiers were found, tangible evidence of a history that still challenges the present.

This is the eighth volume in Christina Holstein's series of books on the battlefields in the Verdun area during the First World War, which follows the usual method of describing the scene with a narrative and supplementing it with detailed tours. The author brings to bear her knowledge of the terrain and her deep understanding of the military problems faced by both sides, aided by her ability to read both French and German sources. The six tours, which expand and deepen the narrative chapters and make up over 70 per cent of the book, are richly illustrated and the whole is remarkably well mapped. The book focuses on the little-known fighting in the Verdun region in the first weeks of the First World War and the German attempts to overcome this powerful, entrenched camp without a frontal assault. Starting with the devastating border battle on 22 August 1914, the author traces the French retreat to the Marne, where their desperate resistance at the Revigny Gap and Vaux-Marie Farm prevented a breakthrough, while Fort Troyon's refusal to surrender to massive bombardment halted a simultaneous attack on the French rear. In a second attempt two weeks later, the Germans captured the important town of St. Mihiel and established a bridgehead on the Meuse, but got no further; Verdun remained in French hands. Fighting ceased, and there was little movement until the start of the Battle of Verdun. This was launched on 21 February 1916 to end the war, but quickly became bogged down, and three hundred days later the French declared victory over the third and final German attack on Verdun.
