Equipped with the Supermarine Spitfire, the squadron was soon deployed to bases south of London and found itself in the thick of the fighting against the Luftwaffe over England, the English Channel, and northern France. Remarkably, between August and November 1941, No. 452 Squadron held the record within Fighter Command as Britain's most successful unit. This success was largely due to the exceptional skill and leadership of several outstanding fighter aces, including the Irishman Wing Commander Brendan "Paddy" Finucane and the renowned VFL footballer Squadron Leader Keith "Bluey" Truscott. In 1942, the squadron was transferred to Australia and became part of No. 1 Fighter Wing, which was responsible for the defense of Darwin. The following year was marked by interception missions against large formations of Japanese fighters and bombers. These fierce engagements took a heavy toll, including the loss of the commanding officer, Squadron Leader Ray "Throttle" Thorold-Smith. In the final stages of the war, the squadron advanced north to the islands of Morotai and Borneo in the Dutch East Indies. No. 452 Squadron was rightly acclaimed by the Australian media and deserves to be remembered as one of the most significant RAAF units of the war. Yetas a "400-series" squadron formed in Britainit is often overlooked.

In January 1970, the Boeing 747a massive new jetlinerentered service; it was essentially twice the size of any commercial aircraft existing at the time. The transition from piston-engine aircraft to jets was well underway; indeed, 1970 marked the year the last major U.S. airline finally retired aircraft powered by this older technology. Other wide-body aircraft also began appearing at airports during the 1970s, including the McDonnell Douglas DC-10, the Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, and later, the Airbus A300. The decade was defined by significant developments in other respects as wellthough not all of them were positive. The oil crisis of 197374, which initially restricted fuel supplies and subsequently led to a massive surge in oil prices, sealed the fate of many older aircraft types. Yet, despite this setback, the rapid expansion of passenger travel continued, and significant new players emerged in the air cargo sector. Richly illustrated and thoroughly researched, *Decades of the Airliners: The 1970s* tells the full story of this exciting era in aviation history.

Through the heroic efforts of the British Eighth Armybeaten but not defeated, and supported by the Royal Air Forcethe *Panzerarmee Afrika* was first brought to a standstill just short of Alexandria and subsequently forced onto the defensive. The see-saw battle on the ground was mirrored in the air: both sides strove in vain to gain a strategic advantage that would have secured air superiority over the battlefield, with hundreds of sorties flown daily in the struggle. Ultimately, the air warlike the ground fightingresulted in a costly stalemate. In that month alone, over 200 aircraft were shot down in aerial combatin addition to losses from accidents and anti-aircraft fireand numerous aircrew members lost their lives. This book chronicles that air war and honors the memory of all the airmen and ground personnel who took part in it, and especially those who lost their lives in the process.

In short, the prevailing view was that the Germans lacked the means for a strategic bombing campaign. The indomitable British peoplewhose morale was supposedly unshaken by the enemy air offensivewere said to have seen the situation through. Fundamentally, the Blitz was regarded as merely a minor side note to the Battle of Britain. This study, however, demonstrates that this was not the case. In 194041, the Luftwaffe was the finest air force in the world and was fully capable of planning and executing a strategic air offensive. At that time, no one possessed the necessary resources for such an air operation. Yet, it is both unfair and conceptually flawed to compare the events of the early war years with the achievements of Bomber Command and the US Eighth Air Force in 1944 and 1945. In reality, during the era of the "Blitz Spirit," British civilian morale was on the verge of collapse by late spring 1941. Drawing on primary documents and an extensive English-language bibliography, this study also examines two other Luftwaffe air offensives: the Baedeker raids of spring 1942 and the "Baby Blitz" of 1944.

Although it powered Bristols own Beaufighter, it saw more widespread use in bombers. Ranging from the 1,375 hp Hercules I to the 1,735 hp Hercules XVIIproduced towards the end of the warthese variants powered aircraft such as the Avro Lancaster B.II, Handley Page Halifax, Short Stirling, Vickers Wellesley, and Vickers Wellington. The sleeve-valve engine featured an efficient configuration that allowed for the use of lower-octane fuels while maintaining the same compression ratio; it was a clever and effective design. Gordon Wilson presents a biography of this brilliant workhorse, which was developed and modified under the pressures of wartime. He had exclusive access to the restoration of a Handley Page Halifax, providing him with photographic details unavailable anywhere else.
