<img src='https://www.zinnfigur.com/out/pictures/generated/product/1/390_245_75/561_5967.jpg' border=0 align='left' hspace=5>Special volume 2 from the "Middle East @ War" series. This is the first comprehensive book to illuminate the full scope of this war from a military perspective. The conflict began with the Hamas attack launched from the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023, yet it spanned two years and seven frontsthereby proving to be the longest and most destructive conflict in the region. A brief historical overview places the war within its context, with the Israeli-Palestinian dispute at its center. The expansion of the war to the so-called "Support Front" carried hostilities beyond the Gaza Strip. Clashes in the north with Hezbollah triggered a Third Lebanon War. Limited combat operations in Syria also included strikes against Iranian elements. This led to extensive exchanges of fire with Iran, which ultimately culminated in the Iranian-Israeli War. Moreover, this war was characterized by direct U.S. involvement, aimed at dismantling any nascent Iranian nuclear weapons program. Clashes with Houthi rebels in Yemen dragged on over a prolonged period. Israeli combat operations against militant groups in the West Bank, as well as violence perpetrated by settlers, reached an unprecedented scale. The impact of U.S. support for Israeli operationsboth in material and diplomatic termsis examined in depth. Furthermore, the consequences of the war for Israel are outlined, including extensive mobilization, economic downturn, material damage, financial costs, and international embargoes. Global condemnation of Israel regarding alleged war crimes and genocide against the Palestinians is also addressed. Additionally, the complex diplomatic processes and the challenging of established norms of conduct are presented. These developments led to political and social upheaval in Israel, which, in turn, impacted the conduct of the war and efforts toward ceasefire negotiations. Finally, the social, economic, and political repercussions of the war are discussed, supplemented by an assessment of the prospects for future regional stability.

During the Cold War, Africa became the main theater of proxy wars between East and West. Against the backdrop of the strong rise of liberation movements supported by communist Eastern Bloc states like Cuba and the Soviet Union, Southern Africa experienced one of the fiercest wars ever fought on the continent. South Africa, subject to international sanctions due to its apartheid policies, was cut off from key arms suppliers following the 1977 UN arms embargo. The country had already been militarily involved in the Angolan conflict since 1975 as part of Operation Savannah, and the need for locally adapted equipment arose even before the start of large-scale conventional operations. As the war intensified and gradually evolved into a more conventional conflict, existing equipment proved increasingly unsuitable for the hot, dry, and dusty environment and the constant threat of landmines. This accelerated ongoing research and development efforts locally, leading South African engineers and military planners to develop a number of often groundbreaking and innovative weapon systems. The result was designs for some of the most robust armored vehicles of their time worldwide, which have significantly influenced development in numerous areas to this day. Decades later, the history of some of these vehicles is still visible on many battlefields around the globe, particularly those littered with landmines and improvised explosive devices. This revised and updated edition examines the Eland, Buffel, Ratel, Casspir, G6 Rhino, Ystervark, Bateleur, and Olifant Mk.1A armored vehicles in depth. The development of each vehicle is presented through a detailed description of its key features, construction and design, equipment, capabilities, variants, and operational experience. Richly illustrated with photographs and specially prepared color profiles, this volume provides an exclusive and indispensable reference work.

Due to strong political opposition, Bantam lost the contract to Willys-Overland and Ford, who ultimately produced around 640,000 units of what is arguably the world's most famous vehicle. Hotchkiss manufactured another 28,000 Jeeps in France after the war. During World War II, the Jeep served all the Allied armies. Partially submersible Jeeps landed in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany on D-Day. Under the extreme conditions of the Eastern Front, they proved their capabilities and earned the admiration of the Red Army. After the war, thousands of Jeeps were distributed to the armies of the liberated European countries. Others were restored and are now sought-after collector's items. In the 1970s, restored Jeeps appeared in numerous films, helping to highlight the importance of the Jeep's historical role in the Allied victory.

The Allied landings in Normandy are still considered the largest military operation in history. D-Day and the subsequent massive battle mobilized thousands of soldiers and pieces of equipment, not to mention the crucial role played by the infantry during the landing. "Les véhicules alliés du D-Day" highlights the extreme mechanization of this Allied army, which rarely moved on foot. Indeed, the first of the great Allied victories was primarily a logistical success. Tens of thousands of vehicles of all sizes stretched in enormous convoys along the main French roads, enabling infantry and armored divisions to push the enemy back to the gates of the empire. The liberation of France and much of Europe is above all a victory of the internal combustion engine

The modern tank is essentially based on the same concept as the tanks of early World War II: an armored vehicle capable of transporting a heavy gun to where it is most needed and supporting infantry. However, the technology used today is a blend of elements known 80 years agogun, armor, and tracksand developments that were completely unimaginable then, such as the one million lines of code in an Ajax reconnaissance vehicle or the unmanned turret of the T-14 Armata. "Target Stopped" examines the technological evolution of a modern tank's systems through a chronological account of key periods since 1945, from the Cold War through the various conflicts in the Middle East to Ukraine, and explores the threats that have driven these changes. Through accounts of tank battlescollected from historical records or reconstructed from archival materialthe stories come alive, allowing readers to appreciate the significance of each technological development. Sam Cranny-Evans, drawing on years of expertise in the field, also offers insights into the revolutionary changes that will shape the tanks of the future.

From 1959, Nike and Hawk surface-to-air missiles, later augmented by the British Bloodhound and Thunderbird systems, were deployed in a two-layered missile belt to counter Warsaw Pact air attacks. This book, written by two former air defense officers and based on declassified documents and interviews with former NATO personnel, is the first comprehensive account of the development, technology, and deployment of the NATO air defense system. The first systemsNike Ajax and Herculeswere used to protect air bases and other critical installations, forming a missile belt across West Germany, from Switzerland to the North Sea. NATO's defense capabilities were further developed through improvements to command and control systems, the expansion of the system northward toward Scandinavia and southward toward Italy, Greece, and Turkey, the addition of Hawk, Thunderbird, and Bloodhound missile units, and finally, the deployment of the ultimate Patriot system in the 1980s. This richly illustrated work provides a concise and detailed overview of the system, which at its peak had more than 200 SAM batteries in operation in Germany and along the entire Iron Curtain.

Quickly deployed in combat, these American designs had to face the Panzer IV, originally conceived as a close-support tank but further developed based on combat experience gained in Poland, France, and North Africa. In this study, tank expert Peter Samsonov describes the origins, development, strengths, and weaknesses of these very different tank types. He explains how, after their defeat at Moscow in the summer of 1942, the Germans regained ground and turned their attention south toward Stalingrad. This led to some of the bloodiest battles of the Second World War. After the devastating losses of 1941, the Red Army's armored forces had to use inexperienced crews and, in many respects, unfamiliar tanks to counter an enemy with highly advanced tanks and experienced crews. The author's insightful analysis is supplemented by archival photographs, colored maps and specially created illustrations that depict these tank types in combat on the Eastern Front.

This account sheds new light on these innovative tank designs and their combat in September 1944a critical moment in Operation Market Garden, the Allied attempt to cross the Rhine and end the war by Christmas. In this book, Ivo van der Spoel reconstructs the decisive tank battle outside the Dutch village of Son on September 20, 1944, in which Cromwell and Challenger tanks of the 15th/19th Hussars repelled an attack by Panther tanks of Panzer Brigade 107. In a fierce battle that lasted all day, the British, supported by American paratroopers, destroyed five Panther tanks and repelled one of the most dangerous German attacks on the Market Garden corridor. The text is complemented by rare photographs, color maps, and specially commissioned illustrations showing the two tank types in action.

The exercise area encompassed the Lower Saxon districts of Schaumburg, Hameln-Pyrmont, Minden-Lübbecke, Rinteln, the Hanover region, and Hildesheim. Approximately 3,000 soldiers participated, including units from the 1st (UK) Armoured Division Headquarters and Signal Regiment, the 20th and 7th Armoured Brigade Headquarters and Signal Squadrons, and the Brigade Headquarters of the Danish Reaction Brigade (DRB). Other participating units included elements of the 102nd Logistic Brigade, the 3rd Regiment Army Air Corps, the Joint Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Regiment (JNBCR), as well as units from the Royal Engineers, Royal Artillery, and the Royal Logistic Corps. The exercise scenario depicted a conflict in which the fictional country of Amstel occupied the province of Westerburg, prompting the intervention of NATO forces led by the 1st (UK) Armoured Division. The objective of the exercise was to train command, planning, and logistics procedures for the conventional deployment of British and allied troops.

It was developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries as a replacement for the earlier Type 61 tank. The first prototype was delivered in 1968. It was a second-generation main battle tank equipped with a 105 mm L7A1 gun. The 74TK was designed to be as small and inconspicuous as possible. When it was introduced, it was unique in that it could change its stance using hydropneumatic suspension to raise or lower the hull. This also provided a stable firing platform, which increased firing accuracy. The Type 74 was considered obsolete even before it entered service. Since 2019, the Type 74 has been phased out and replaced by the eight-wheeled Type 16 Mobile Combat Vehicle, which is the subject of another Trackpad title. This book presents the recovery, anti-aircraft and bridge-laying versions of the Type 74, all of which are based on the same chassis.

But his fear of exposing the flanks of the German central front led to costly diversionary manoeuvres in the north and south near Leningrad and Kiev, delaying the attack on the Russian capital. When the Battle of Moscow Operation Typhoon finally began on 30 September, the Panzerwaffe was already weakened, while Soviet forces had expanded their defences and reinforced their lines. Across a 370-mile front, the 3rd and 4th Panzer Armies in the north and the 2nd Panzer Army in the south stormed towards Moscow in a massive pincer movement, with hundreds of tanks and assault guns in tow, relying on the familiar tactics of blitzkrieg. What followed, however, was no Blitzkrieg. Instead, German tanks and infantrymen became embroiled in a gruelling war of attrition during the coldest winter of the 20th century. Snowed in and undersupplied, with entire units freezing to death, the offensive came to a standstill at the gates of the capital. Tanks and Armour in the Battle for Moscow offers a compelling visual account of the doomed advance of the Panzerwaffe on Moscow, based on over 130 rare and unpublished war photographs. With detailed captions and expert narration, it traces the campaign from its faltering restart in the spring of 1942 to the bloody Rzhev-Sychyovka offensive and beyond, chronicling how the Germans lost the initiative on the Eastern Front. By early 1943, all hope of capturing Moscow had vanished, and a protracted retreat to the west had begunone that would not end until the Reich itself lay in ruins.

At the helm of this gigantic clash was Field Marshal Ritter von Leeb, commander of Army Group North. With 500,000 men under his command, consisting of nearly thirty divisions, including six tank and motorized divisions, with 1,500 tanks and 12,000 heavy weapons, as well as an air fleet of nearly 1,000 aircraft, he was determined to advance through the Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, directly to their targetLeningrad. Leeb's offensive on Leningrad progressed rapidly. The backbone of the advance was his tank force, consisting of the 3rd and 4th Panzer Groups under the command of Field Marshal Erich von Manstein, the LVI. Motorized Corps and the XXXIX Motorized Corps of General Rudolf Schmidt, which included the 12th, 18th, and 20th Panzer Divisions. Tanks and Armor at Leningrad 19411944 offers a visual chronicle of how the Panzerwaffe attacked and supported the infantry fighting around the besieged city of Leningrad. With 150 rare and often unpublished images, this book provides an insight into the German tanks that operated around Leningrad, from their early triumphant days in 1941 and 1943 to their slow and painful retreat in early 1944.
