This volume recounts its past, focusing in particular on the last 40 years since its relocation to Hyères. The regiment performed heroic deeds in the First World War, but its development over the last century has been eventful. Originally a conventional artillery regiment, it was reorganized as an anti-aircraft artillery regiment in Verdun in 1970, where it tested the Roland weapon system. Stationed in Hyères since 1984, it has participated in the successive restructurings of the French Army and is now its only anti-aircraft regiment. The 54th Artillery Regiment participates in all operations of the French Army and has regularly been in the spotlight over the past ten years: its first deployment to Mali in 2013, the independent rotation of personnel in Mali until the withdrawal of Operation Barkhane troops, which it protected up to the border with Niger, the neutralization of a terrorist by a three-person team during an attack in Nice in 2015, the intervention in Paris on November 13, 2015, the night of the attacks, the death of the last French soldier in Mali in 2022, and so on. All these events, as well as the deep sense of duty of the artillerymen of the 54th Regiment, are described in this book, which combines the human side, the experience, the versatility, and the pride in belonging of the men and women who work for the esprit de corps of the 54th Artillery Regiment.

He was introduced to Freemasonry at an early age and was always supported in his career by the powerful Masonic networks that were inextricably linked to the Third Republic and were rebuilt after the hardships of the First World War. He was appointed head of their military cabinets by radical and socialist council presidents or war ministers, including Edouard Daladier. He worked in perfect intellectual harmony with them to implement the ideals of the republican left in the areas of personnel management and strategic defence options. In 1940, he commanded the Fifth Army, which was stationed behind the Maginot Line in Alsace. This disappeared after a few battles in defeat, and he himself was held captive in Germany for five years. However, he remained true to his pre-war views and was often unable to distance himself from his friends who collaborated with the Reich. These republican networks did not always ignore men who were classified as right-wing, such as Lattre or de Gaulle. But defeat exacerbated the divisions. Some members of these networks would tacitly or openly profess their collaboration with Germany. Others would embody the repression of this collaboration after the liberation, without having been resistance fighters themselves. The paths of ideologues, whatever their nature, are always tortuous. But beyond the fate of individuals, this study offers a picture of a French army torn between politicians and military leaders with conflicting ideologies. It was unable to escape this and went down with them in 1940.

In a region where imperial ambitions, local rivalries and strategic challenges collide, the Regiment of the Levant asserted itself with a tenacity that commanded respect. From Syria and Lebanon to the post-war upheavals and Tunisia, this story is first and foremost a story of people. Officers, non-commissioned officers and legionnaires unite under the flag, pay a high price and are driven by the same aspiration: the honour of service and the discipline of the corps, summed up in their motto Ad unum, To the last. The first work devoted exclusively to the 6th REI, this book traces the epic story of a unit that has long been overshadowed, based on individual life stories and the regiment's memories.

<img src='https://www.zinnfigur.com/out/pictures/generated/product/1/390_245_75/528_10397.jpg' border=0 align='left' hspace=5>This new project on Versailles aims to continue Pierre Verlet's monograph, Le Château de Versailles, published by Fayard in 1961 and reissued in 1985. This exemplary work of scholarship has established itself as a reference work on the residence of the Ancien Régime, which is analysed in minute detail. Verlet's text thus makes it possible to retrace the stages of the construction of Versailles and its design, but also provides useful details about the use of the premises and their development up to the Revolution. The dense text is illustrated with plans that allow the reader to find their way around the palace. Since 1985, the date of a landmark colloquium devoted exclusively to Versailles, however, work on this subject has proliferated to such an extent that it would not be inappropriate to speak of Versailles studies to describe this science of the place and its history, which lies at the intersection of political history, art history , architecture, painting, sculpture, engraving, garden art, music, tableware, literary history, scientific history, institutional history, social history and the history of mentalities. Alexandre Maral, who has devoted his professional life to Versailles and is now the leading specialist in this field, has decided to publish a new monograph modelled on that of Pierre Verlet. The aim is to offer the curious reader the essentials of what can be known about the history of the place. However, the subject matter of this new work has been expanded in two respects: temporally, by including the period before Louis XIV (which has long been neglected but is fundamental to understanding the significance of Versailles, which is part of a long history) and the period after 1789 (up to 2023); spatially, by including the estate, the town and the surrounding area. Apart from the fact that knowledge on the subject has been enriched by numerous studies since 1985, the approach deserved to be renewed and to include reflections on Versailles as an instrument of government and a concentrate of civilisation. The final work combines scholarship and reading pleasure in a carefully designed, bound and richly illustrated edition.

It is both a journey through time and a guide for anyone interested in military matters, inviting readers to rediscover weapons, uniforms, songs, esprit de corps and the meaning of centuries-old symbols. This history and these traditions strengthen the cohesion of the troops and the moral strength of the soldiers of a united army. Above all, however, it is an indispensable tribute to the soldiers of yesterday and today. With its content, which is likely to become a universal reference, this book encourages reflection on the importance of human commitment, both individual and collective, in the service of the greater good and of France.

On the battlefields of both world wars, during decolonisation and on foreign missions, this elite unit has forged its identity as foot soldiers, proud of its past and determined to look to the future. In the heart of the Pays de Bitche or on missions at home and abroad, the 16th BCP continues to prove every day that it is a worthy heir to its predecessors from Ramscapelle and Tannay. This book traces the 150-year history of this unit and the men and women who have served and currently serve in it.

A brilliant military man, skilled diplomat and key player in the secret service, he lived through the major conflicts of the 20th century, often leaving behind traces that went unnoticed. As the heir to Lyautey and a companion of Charles de Gaulle from the very beginning, Catroux distinguished himself through his political acumen, his mastery of networks of influence and his decisive role in the affairs of the Middle East and North Africa. From the Middle East to Moscow and Algiers to Indochina, he asserted himself as a mediator and strategist for the empire, arousing both admiration and controversy. Judged by some as the liquidator of the empire and regarded by others as a peacemaker, he embodies a fascinating and enigmatic figure who oscillates between military rigour and diplomatic ambitions. This book reveals a nuanced and deeply human portrait of a man with a complex personality who was often criticised but always determined to play a central role in the great affairs of his time.

He was 20 years old. He had actually wanted to become a teacher, but during the first battles, amid the roar of bombs and grenades, he realised his military calling. Among other things, he took part in the Second Battle of the Marne on 25 September 1915. He was wounded twice. Exhausted by the strain, he was admitted to hospital several times. As he was no longer fit for combat, he was transferred to the AFN as an officer for indigenous affairs. For almost twenty years, he served at the foot of the Grand Erg Oriental in his sun- and heat-scorched Bordj of Bir-Kecira in the Goum Saharien of Tunisia, where he became commander, and devoted himself entirely to sovereign tasks, from pursuing Rezzous to monitoring Habib Bourguiba, the future president of Tunisia. In the first weeks of the Second World War, after returning to France two and a half years earlier and being promoted to battalion commander, he was sent to the Battle of Lille in May 1940 with the 14th Zouave Regiment. After resisting the enemy's attacks until his last bullet, he was forced to lay down his arms. Commander Mathieu was taken to an officers' prisoner-of-war camp in northern Germany and was killed in a bombing raid in 1945.

Although the geopolitical environment, the alliance game, and the motives and intentions of the German enemy varied greatly from one era to another, France's military power was taken very seriously. A comparative study of the campaigns that took place in the Belgian and French Ardennes illustrates the fate of a French army that was at the height of its prestige at the end of the Second Empire and was destroyed 70 years later in the ruins of the Third Republic. At a time when the European continent is once again the scene of intense warfare, it seems appropriate to analyse what led our armies in the past to the disasters of August 1870, August 1914 and May 1940. Is the French army doomed, regardless of the period, to be ignorant or incapable of preparing and conducting a campaign? Far from being a harsh indictment, this essay attempts, in the form of a three-part analysis of these three decisive military operations, to decipher the causes of the intrinsic weaknesses of an army whose overwhelming majority of officers, non-commissioned officers, soldiers and civilian employees have always shown exceptional courage in the most tragic trials.

It was an identity-forming, Francophone, Francophile, patriotic and protesting press. After returning to France in 1918 and faced with the threat from Germany, the same press became the guardian of the reconquered France. With a solid information network and under the leadership of outstanding editors-in-chief who knew Germany and diplomatic secrets very well, the Presse Messine made it its mission to warn of the growing danger from Germany. The threat posed by a Germany that opposed the democratic Weimar Republic, was hostile to France, nationalistic, pan-Germanist, militaristic and revanchist... A Germany that, even before National Socialism, was determined to wage war to bring down the Treaty of Versailles of 1919 and regain its place as a world power. The foresight of the Presse Messine was incredible, but unfortunately it was not heeded by France. Four years of research and illustration work were set in motion to bring this work to fruition.

The pages of this book are filled with stories of bravery and the spirit of camaraderie that characterises the paratroopers. At the heart of the 1st RCP's strength and identity are its flags, symbols of tradition and unity. Each flag tells a story, the story of a company, a battalion, an era. The book reveals these stories and illustrates how traditions were born and evolved, sometimes from simple fantasies that became respected customs. These traditions are the glue that holds the regiment's esprit de corps together, a spirit that can be felt on every page. This book is more than a simple chronicle; it is an open window into the soul of the 1st RCP, offering a deep understanding of its heritage and its connection to its flags. The result is an authentic and captivating narrative, enriched by black-and-white and colour photographs that bring the flags and the stories they carry to life.

This anthology is the result of lengthy work involving the best military history specialists, and it allows us to grasp the full richness and historical depth of this story. How can we identify the contours of a French school of military thought? To what extent has France's geographical position influenced its sensitivity to the combat environment? Does its early centralised organisation affect the way it perceives conflicts? Is there a relationship to the offensive that is more pronounced in French thinking than in that of other nations? How did the construction of a vast colonial empire lead the French to deepen counterinsurgency thinking more than others? With this compilation, the book enables the reader to feed his or her reflections on French strategic thinking and its sedimentation over the centuries. From Brantôme and Richelieu, through Chevalier de Folard and Comte de Guibert, to the generals of the Apocalypse who designed France's nuclear strategy during the de Gaulle era, the selected texts are presented here with annotations that shed light on the historical context of their creation and put each author's work in a new perspective.

It was characterised by a policy of expansion that is embedded in its political, economic and cultural history. This book deals with the debates that it has triggered: the impact of this policy in the mother country and in the colonised countries, the organisation, control and exploitation of these territories, ultramarine cultures, the interaction between colonisers and colonised, the rise of independence movements... These questions show the weight of a heritage that is still alive, in which taboos, memories, identitarianism and social unrest do not cease to (re)awaken this colonising France. To feed these discussions and provide an echo, the facts, their material, human and cultural impact throughout history and the legacies passed on to the present are juxtaposed in thematic sections. An extensive bibliography is linked to each chapter, making it easy to use.

A highly topical subject - as the Russian invasion of Ukraine shows and with the advent of digital technology and its impact on warfare. The military strategy chosen by General Burkhard, "winning the war before the war", offers a broad and timeless field of activity for French military transmitters, extending to the control of conventional weapons and electronic warfare in the context of hybrid warfare. Thanks to private archives such as those of General René Marty, Director of the Transmission Department (1953-1958), and key testimonies such as that of General Patrick Bazin, who was in charge of the Inter-Army Directorate of Defence Infrastructure Networks and Information Systems (DIRISI) from 2010 to 2014, this volume presents - as Olivier Forcade points out in his epilogue - the best available knowledge on the subject.

This magazine in turn provided the basis for a regional publishing house in 1975, which soon dedicated itself to the landing and the battle in Normandy and thus became a pioneer. From 1990 to 1995, the golden age followed, during which the memories of numerous veterans who became legends were collected. As with all independent companies, the road was rocky, but Heimdal, with this wealth of experience, opened up discoveries from antiquity to the Second World War and the Middle Ages to its readers.
