January 1679.
This series documents the final chapter of the Swedisch-Brandenburger War (1674-1679). The Elector and his troops follow the Swedisch retreat and to save time take sledges to travel on the frozen Baltic Sea transporting artillery as well as troops.
From an army of 14 thousand Swedes only three thousant reache their homes.
Includet: 9 sled.
"The Great Sleigh Drive" (German: Die große Schlittenfahrt) was a daring and bold maneuver by Frederick William, the Great Elector of Brandenburg-Prussia, to drive Swedish forces out of the Duchy of Prussia, a territory of his which had been invaded by the Swedes during the winter of 1678. Wikipedia.
The Scanian War (Danish: Skånske Krig; Norwegian: Den skånske krig; Swedish: Skånska kriget; German: Schonischer Krieg) was a part of the Northern Wars involving the union of DenmarkNorway, Brandenburg and Sweden. It was fought from 1675 to 1679 mainly on Scanian soil, in the former DanishNorwegian provinces along the border with Sweden, and in Northern Germany. While the latter battles are regarded as a theater of the Scanian war in English, Danish, Norwegian and Swedish historiography, they are seen as a separate war in German historiography, called the Swedish-Brandenburgian War (German: Schwedisch-Brandenburgischer Krieg).

In the war against the Swedes between 1675 and 1679, the Brandenburg Elector Friedrich-Wilhelm was able to drive his opponents out of the then Swedish-controlled Western Pomerania after several battles. The last fortress to fall was Greifswald on 7 November 1678. The military pressure on the ancestral homeland of Brandenburg had been removed. Frederick-Wilhelm could now concentrate on liberating the Duchy of Prussia, which had fallen to him by succession.
The Swedish troops had marched from Swedish Pomerania to Courland and on to East Prussia and were soon in front of the town of Memel. The defender of the place, General Dönhoff, had to withdraw after the town was on fire and there was no further possibility of defence. In this situation, the Elector felt compelled to launch another immediate campaign. First, however, he secured the protection of his ancestral lands in the west and in Pomerania. At a meeting in Bad Doberan, the existing alliance between Denmark and Brandenburg was renewed (24.11 .1678). In the West, he negotiated simultaneously with the Emperor in Vienna and the French King to obtain an alliance against Sweden or further neutrality from the Great Powers.
In Prussia the situation worsened. Johann Sobieski, King of Poland, did not openly enter the battle on Sweden's side, but secretly recruited troops for the Swedes with French money. The Brandenburg governor in Prussia, the Duke of Croy, reported this to Berlin and the Elector now felt compelled to intervene in Prussia.
In Pomerania he gathered his troops, with a few exceptions all the regiments standing there, and sent them to Prussia under the generals Derfflinger, Götz, Promnitz and Schöning. General Görtzke had already set off there in advance in October 1678 with his cuirassiers, the "Sydow" dragoons and 1000 musketeers. He advanced to the Vistula, threw back the recruited Poles and stopped at the town of Wehlau.
In January 1679, the Elector set out on the march himself with his army. In Marienwerder he joined forces with Derfflinger's troops and the Pomeranian corps (4000 horsemen, 1500 dragoons and 3500 infantry along with 34 cannons). On hearing of the Brandenburg advance, the Swedish General Horn retreated as far as Insterburg and continued on to Tilsit. His pursuit was first taken up by General Görtzke, but then also by General Derfflinger with 2800 horsemen.
If the Elector wanted to prevent the Swedes from escaping, he had to shorten his route overland. Since the "Frische Haff" was frozen over, he gathered all the sledges he could find in the district, loaded his infantry as well as baggage and cannons onto them and transported everything across the ice. Thus the army reached Königsberg, the capital of the Duchy of Prussia. From there, also on sledges, he crossed the "Curonian Lagoon" and reached the town of Gilge. From here he advanced the last miles to Tilsit in battle formation.
In Tilsit, the ennobled General Derfflinger (von Treffenfeld) and his vanguard first met the Swedish cavalry, which was defeated despite fierce resistance. While the Elector was still discussing with his generals whether to attack immediately, the Swedish General Horn left the city by night and fog, leaving his entire baggage behind. He went as far as Heidekrug, was attacked there by the pursuing Brandenburgers under General Görtzke, defeated and fled across the border to Poland. Generals v. Treffenfeld and Görtzke followed at his heels. General Schöning also took up the pursuit and confronted the Swedes. A battle ensued, but it did not bring a final decision. The Swedes retreated further to Riga. The Brandenburgers broke off their pursuit and took up winter quarters between Tilsit and Memel. The Swedes were driven out of Prussia.
The crossing of the Brandenburg army on sledges over the fresh and Curonian Lagoon was one of the reasons why Frederick-Wilhelm was called the "Great Elector". The winter war in ice and snow, without the blessings of our modern civilisation, was an outstanding event to which even the opponents of the time paid tribute.

Series list for 100/17
No. 100-706 (4x) BB.
