Each biography, based on numerous sources in various languages, brings the generals of the Austrian army to life, transforming them from mere names on paper. The three-volume work covers the generals from Abele to Gyurkovic and also provides an overview of the Austrian army of the period. Volume 2 contains the biographies of Generals Haan to Quosdanovich, along with information on the beginnings and progression of their careers. Finally, Volume 3 is dedicated to Generals Radetzky to Zschock and includes an extensive bibliography. Each biography includes genealogical information where available, as well as a description of the individual's career from joining a regiment to retirement. The biographies were compiled using material from a wide variety of sources, including regimental and campaign histories and periodical articles.

This company leased cargo space on Intra Airways aircraft to transport fresh flowers and produce from Guernsey to the UK mainland. Subsequent expansion led to the creation of Express Air Services, which introduced passenger charter flights and secured its first contract with the Royal Mail. The Dart Group acquired Express Air Services in 1983 and renamed it Channel Express. The airline offered scheduled and ad-hoc charter flights throughout Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, operating a variety of aircraft. In October 2002, the Dart Group entered the low-cost carrier market, establishing Jet2.com. As its route network expanded, the airline opened bases at Leeds Bradford, Manchester, Belfast International, and Newcastle. Jet2holidays was launched in 2007, offering package holidays operated by its sister airline. By 2019, Jet2.com carried nearly 14.5 million passengers annually with a fleet of 100 aircraft operating from nine bases. This fleet increasingly consisted of Airbus A321s, marking a shift from a predominantly Boeing fleet. Featuring over 170 illustrations, this book chronicles the history of Jet2.com, from its predecessor Express Air Freight through its growth to its transformation into an award-winning scheduled airline.

This historical overview of the regiments of the Austrian ruling house Geschichte und bildliche Vorstellung der Regimenter des Erzhauses Oesterreich (History and pictorial representation of the regiments of the Archduchy of Austria) comprised 168 plates depicting the uniforms of the various regiments of Emperor Franz II of Habsburg. Each engraving was hand-coloured and accompanied by a short caption indicating the date of foundation or origin of the regiment and its changing names over the years. This collection, which was available at the time at the Reillychen geographischen Verschleiss Komptoir in Vienna, is now very rare. It is an important contemporary source of images relating to the wars of the French Revolution and the First Empire. The fifty plates depicting the cavalry regiments of the Holy Roman Empire (two carbine regiments, nine cuirassier regiments, eight dragoon regiments, six light cavalry regiments, one ulan regiment and nine hussar regiments) and the general staff are reproduced here in colour with their original captions in German. These captions have been translated and supplemented for better understanding.

The battles around Graz in 1809 were part of the Fifth Coalition War. The confrontation began on 30 May with the French entering the city without a fight for the time being, but it was not until 13 June that the siege of the Schlossberg began with the bombardment of the Graz citadel, where a weak garrison had entrenched itself. On 25 June, the garrison was followed by a brief relief operation by parts of an Austrian corps under Ignaz Gyulai, which led to a battle in St. Leonhard on 26 June. In this battle, the French Division Broussier successfully withstood the attacks on the Ruckerlberg and Rosenberg and forced the Austrians to retreat after the arrival of reinforcements. As a result of the armistice of Znojmo, the commander of the garrison still holding out, Major Hackher, had to lay down his arms on 22 July and hand over the Schlossberg to the French.

However, the multi-ethnic state of Europe was still strong enough to stand up to the new forces by means of the best army equipment and a corresponding willingness to learn. After a stalemate in the 1790s and two crushing defeats in 1805 and 1809, the forces around Metternich were able to put the brakes on progress.

Without Austria, victory in the Battle of the Nations and Napoleon I's abdication in 1814 would not have been possible. Moreover, its part in the final defeat of the Emperor of the French in 1815 has often been undervalued. The years spent fighting Napoleonic France are recounted here on the basis of memories of Austrian military officers. Kurt Mitterer begins by explaining the changes in the Imperial and Royal Army's image of war from the Revolutionary Wars to the end of the war. Army from the Revolutionary Wars to the Congress of Vienna.

Russia, Prussia and Austria also sat at the negotiating table at the Congress of Vienna. The order shaped by Prince Metternich at that time is regarded as the epitome of reaction, against all new liberal and national forces. Wolfram Siemann's biography "Metternich. Strategist and Visionary" has changed this picture. For his biography, the successor to Gerhard A. Ritter evaluated Metternich's long overlooked estate in Prague, where he came across documents on the Austrian foreign minister's motives: after 20 years of war in Europe, Metternich feared that the nations' drive for freedom would lead to an even bloodier catastrophe.

Wasn't a legally binding balance of the European powers then the progress that could be made at the time? Wolfram Siemann looks at Metternich in his own time and discovers an adversary of Napoleon who was more modern than he has long been given credit for.

In this work, the author attempts to redefine the role of Archduke Johann as a military figure in the Habsburg Monarchy during the Napoleonic period. Emperor Franz saw a favourable opportunity for himself to break Napoleon's rule by attacking and to restore Austria's old role in Europe. The warnings of Archduke Charles and the Peace Party were not heard and a hasty attack on Bavaria followed in April. After no reports of success came from the front, the population began to grumble. It all ended in Austria's defeat and the suppression of the uprising in Tyrol.

With the perspective of contemporary witnesses from the ranks of France's allies, the months of the war in Austria in 1809 are described. There were soldiers of the Confederation of the Rhine from a total of 22 countries from Baden to Bavaria, Saxony and to many small principalities.

In addition to the cavalry, artillery and pioneer corps examined in this third volume, even rarer types of troops such as the Generalquartiermeisterstab or the navy are considered. One chapter deals with the composition of the grenadier battalions in the 1809 campaign and thus offers a good complement to the first part of this series. Finally, there is a section at the end on the Tyrolean Uprising of 1809 including a look at the organisational structure and uniforms of the insurgents.
Similar to the previous two parts, the individual units of the troop types are presented with their development and formation history, with special consideration of the operations in the war of 1809. Especially the cavalry had a long tradition in the Habsburg multinational empire, an explanation for the large number of light cavalry such as hussars or ulans. But also the artillery as well as the pioneer corps were subject to some upheavals in the course of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, which are presented in detail in this volume.
This volume was also accompanied by a specialist editorial team, which ensures that the current state of knowledge on the history of the Austrian army is taken into account. In addition, in contrast to the original edition, the German translation is accompanied by numerous, hitherto largely unknown, illustrations that give the reader a nice impression of the military units dealt with.
With the completion of the series, German-speaking readers have a detailed basis for researching the Austrian army on the threshold from the Revolutionary Wars to the "mass armies" of the late Napoleonic period.

In addition to the Feldjäger battalions, which should be even better known as line troops, this volume deals with the units of the military frontier as well as the Landwehr.
It is precisely the frontier regiments that underline the diversity of the peoples living in the border regions of the Habsburg Empire through their recruitment. After a historical introduction to the military frontier and its protection, especially against the Ottoman Empire, the author goes into detail about the individual frontier units and gives testimony to their deployment, especially for the campaign of 1809.
Even more important in the Austrian army organisation, however, is the Landwehr. Formed at the instigation of Archduke Charles, the Landwehr was intended to provide the active army with a reservoir of soldiers ready for action and to be deployed together with the Austrian line troops in the next military conflict. Acerbi describes the special features of the Landwehr formed in the individual parts of the Habsburg Empire and provides impressive insights into their deployment in the war of 1809 against Napoleon's armies.
In order to give Acerbi's descriptions of the formation history a visual impression of the troop units dealt with, numerous, mostly contemporary illustrations have been added to the German translation. For example, Eder's plates, presented here for the first time in a comprehensive form, show the variety of uniforms within the Austrian army. The significantly expanded picture section thus offers German-speaking readers added value compared to the original English edition.

What could have been the beginning of a great military reform and an incomparable triumph for the military administration in Vienna and the Generalissimo Archduke Charles turned into one of the greatest catastrophes in the history of the Habsburg Empire.
Austria disappeared from the scene of European politics after a series of unfortunate events and wrong military decisions. It lost important territories and, perhaps more importantly, its powerful armies. The author will report on this period and explain the organisation of the Austrian army, from recruitment methods to various details concerning the different units. After all, until the First World War, this army was the largest force Austria had ever possessed.
German translation of the title "The Austrian Army 1805-1809".

Contents:
Foreword
The Imperial and Royal Army 1805-1809
The Austrian Army 1807-1812
The Austrian Tschako
(In)felix Austria - The Austrian Army
1805-1809: An Essay

The Line Infantry
I. In early 19th century, the Austrian army was the third largest and one of the best-trained armies in the world. The individual regiments performed well and were considered solid. However, hampered by the inherent conservatism of the hierarchy, the Austrians had to face the most modern army in Europe. Despite the many defeats suffered, the Austrian soldiers performed with discipline and played a central role in the coalitions against France, from the campaigns in 1790s, to the Austerlitz campaign of 1805, the closely-balanced battles of 1809, and the final victorious campaigns of 1813-1814. Austrian cavalry, in particular, was considered one of the best in Europe by allies as well as enemies. For the first time, this topic is introduced starting from the first campaign against France. The book includesthe regimental histories of each unit after the original sources, unpublished iconography, and is completed by detailed illustrations depicting uniforms and equipment of the mounted kaiserlich white coats.

Despite the many defeats, the Austrian soldiers were disciplined and played a central role in the coalitions against France, from the campaigns of the 1790s to the Austerlitz campaign of 1805, the even battles of 1809 and in the campaigns of the Wars of Liberation of 1813-1814. Armee") was the armed force of the Holy Roman Empire under its last monarch, the Habsburg Emperor Francis II, although in reality, it was nearly all composed of the Habsburg army. When the Holy Roman Empire was dissolved in 1806, it assumed its title of the Army of the Austrian Empire under the same monarch, now known as Emperor Francis I of Austria. The ancient name of "Imperial-Royal Army" was used from 1745, as "Royal" referred to the Apostolic Kingdom of Hungary, which was not part of the Holy Roman Empire, but under Habsburg rule. The key feature of the army of the Austrian Empire during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars (1792-1815) was that, due to the multi-national nature of the territories, regiments were split into German units (which included Czech-troops recruited from Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia, Polish and Ukrainian units recruited from the territory of Galicia, Flemings and Walloons territory of the former Austrian Netherlands, and Italians) and Hungarian units (which included troops from Croatia and Transylvania).

The Imperial-Royal Army was the armed forces of the Holy Roman Empire under its last monarch, the Habsburg Emperor Franz II, although in reality this imperial army was mainly formed from the contingents of the Habsburg Empire. The old name of the "k.u.k. The main characteristic of the army of the Austrian Empire during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars (1792-1815) was that, due to the multinational nature of this multi-ethnic empire, the regiments of the Imperial and Royal Army were divided into German (to which Czech troops were added) and Hungarian (to which Czech troops were added) regiments. With Napoleon's French troops depleted and debilitated after the long struggle in the Spanish War, the German troops for the first time played a major combat role in the centre of the battle line.Aiming at a union of German states under French protection to replace the decrepit Holy Roman Empire, Napoleon sought to expand French influence in central Germany at the expense of the Austrian and Prussian monarchies, ensuring Frances own security.
