Volume 2 describes the aeronautical endeavours of Austria-Hungary, from balloon reconnaissance to the founding of the k.u.k. Military Aeronautical Institute and the Airship Department. It examines the challenges of manufacturing aircraft, training pilots and integrating airships and aeroplanes into military operations. A comparative perspective emphasises the unique contributions of Austria-Hungary in comparison to its European partners. Lavishly illustrated with photographs, technical diagrams and illustrations, this volume brings to life a fascinating and often overlooked era.

Here at the Steinfeld with its weather-resistant ground, ideal conditions prevailed. Designers tested their designs, spectacular competitions took place and world records were flown. The Emperor arrived and the military pilots presented themselves to the public for the first time. In the period from 1910 to 1912, the aviators and aviation pioneers triggered enormous enthusiasm; on fine days, tens of thousands of spectators came to the airfield.

Naturally, there was a huge demand for memorabilia, especially postcards. This incidentally also resulted in an accurate documentation of all events at the airfield. In years of meticulous work, the author has assembled a very comprehensive collection of more than 400 postcards from the Wiener Neustädter Flugfeld. They document its tumultuous development in all its facets and convey an immediate impression of this great period of aviation that was just beginning. The photo studios and their working methods are also presented in this comprehensive work.

Luftfahrttruppen a unique memorial. They outline the history of these young troops and have collected a large number of previously unpublished pictures. The result is a fascinating account of this hitherto scarcely documented part of Austro-Hungarian military history.

From the contents: The beginning of military aviation - "heavier than air" in the Danube Monarchy; Camillo Castiglioni - the master of the aviation industry; The heroes of the air; The seaplanes of the Imperial and Royal Navy; The aircraft factory of the Austro-Hungarian Air Force. Kriegsmarine; The Aircraft Factories in Austria-Hungary; What Remained of the Imperial and Royal Aviation Troops. Aviation Troops. Although the Danube Monarchy had been one of the leading states in the field of aviation in the years before 1914, it was only possible to send aviation companies into the field at the outbreak of the war with the greatest effort. Because the existing aircraft material was not fit for war, planes and engines had to be hastily purchased from the allied Germany. In 1915, it was finally possible to boost aircraft production and pilot training. Towards the end of the war, however, the general economic fatigue of Austria-Hungary and the superiority of the Allies became noticeable.

Along the mighty dreadnoughts, battle cruisers and U-boats, it housed a new breed of weapon the seaplane. Beginning from a shed in Teodo, then an olive grove in the tiny village of Kumbor and later, out of a solid and well-equipped base and forward flying stations in Durazzo and Gravosa, Austro-Hungarian naval airmen played a major role in the conflict of unprecedented proportions in human history. This book tells the forgotten story of their hardships, sacrifices, friendship and successes, from a modest start over frightening Montenegrin mountains, over daily actions against Entente forces in the Southern Adriatic, until the bitter end of the once mighty Empire, and resurrection of its former naval air arm within the new South Slavic Kingdom. It is drawn on archival sources, as well as privately-owned documents from Serbia, Austria, Croatia, Italy, Czech Republic, Hungary, United States, France, Germany, Slovenia, Montenegro and United Kingdom, and contains many previously unknown or long unplaced facts, 33 aircraft profiles and 189 authentic photographs from the epoch, most of which are published here for the first time.

This book tells the forgotten story of their problems, sacrifices, friendships and successes, from a humble start over Montenegrin mountains, through the daily actions against the Entente forces in the southern Adriatic, to the bitter end of the once mighty Habsburg Empire and the resurrection of former bases of the Imperial and Royal Naval Air Forces in the new South Slavic Kingdom.
Austro-Hungarian industry produced a series of poor fighter types such as the Phönix D I and Hansa-Brandenburg D I during the early stages of the war, and it was not until licence-built examples of the battle-proven Albatros and D II and D III began to reach Fliegerkompagnien, or Fliks, in May 1917 that the fortunes of pilots began to look up. Unlike the German-built Albatrosen, which initially suffered wing failures in flight, the Oeffag aircraft were far more robust than German D IIs and D IIIs. They also displayed superior speed, climb, manoeuvrability and infinitely safer flight characteristics. Such attributes were used to the full by all the leading Austro-Hungarian aces, including Brumowski, Arigi, Kiss and Linke-Crawford, who fought Italian pilots in Hanriots and SPADs, as well as British pilots in Camels and Bristol Fighters. The exploits of Austro-Hungarian aces were initially brought to the attention of English-speaking readers in the 1980s through the pioneering work of Martin O'Connor. An additional 30 years of additional research has allowed Paolo Varriale to integrate and update his work, rectifying some inaccuracies and adding new details and a large number of unpublished photographs. The careful crosschecking of Allied sources with Austrian and German records form the basis for a detailed reconstruction of the dogfights fought by the leading aces. This painstaking research allows many myths to be exposed and errors to be corrected. The book will cover the use of Albatros fighters on the Italian and Eastern Fronts, from the fighters' initial arrival in mid 1917 through to the last days of war. It will also chart the careers of the Austro-Hungarian aces that flew the D II and D III, their successes and their defeats, with additional information about their personal background and their post-war lives in the nations born from the collapse of the Hapsburg Empire. Some 49 pilots achieved acedom during World War 1, and the bulk of these pilots made their claims flying the 586 Oeffag-built Albatrosen.

It took until 1783, however, when the first flight of a manned hot-air balloon brought this goal closer. In the late 19th century, the military increasingly devoted itself to the subject of "aviation". One of the aviation pioneers of the time, Franz Hinterstoisser, published personal experiences and impressions of the conquest of the "air ocean" in his "Airship Diary" long before the First World War. Journeys with Katharina Schratt, the friend of Emperor Franz Joseph, with archdukes and officer comrades are brought to life in it, as well as the first crossing of the Eastern Alps in an aircraft and the manifold efforts to arouse the interest of the general public for aviation.

Immediately after the First World War, the newly founded Republic of "German Austria" possessed about 1000 aircraft due to the aircraft still on airfields or returning from the fronts after the armistice. According to the articles of the peace treaty of St. Germain in September 1919, however, Austria was prohibited from "manufacturing, importing and exporting" aircraft; "complete land and seaplanes, as well as those in the process of manufacture, repair or construction" were delivered at Austria's expense. In order to mitigate this ban and still build up an air force, albeit a small one, the "Military Airport Police" was founded at the Vienna-Aspern airfield as early as July 1919. This was followed by the police aviation squadrons in Graz and Fischamend, as well as a second airport police force in Wiener Neustadt. The reason given to the Interallied Control Commission for this formation was the need to protect the border against Bolshevik Hungary. The squadrons were mainly equipped with Hansa- Brandenburg and Phoenix aircraft. In the Republic, aircraft types from the Austrian company Hopfner were also added. This volume from the series "Austrian Military History" shows the arduous path that the Air Force of the First Republic had to take in order to obtain and maintain a basic stock of aircraft and cadre personnel. An extremely exciting account of a largely unknown chapter in Austrian aviation history.

Paperback, very many bw photos, 14 three-page sketches of aircraft, 2 bw maps. 80 pages.

He either did not take care of it, the easiest accusation, or actively supported it by making transport space available. The retreat of his army group across the Balkans in 1944/45 remains his undisputed military masterpiece. In 1945, Löhr remained with his soldiers during the surrender, although he could have withdrawn and although he was aware of the fate that lay ahead of him. Perhaps the deliberate defamation was also intended to conceal the fact that only a few officers had the stature to do so. Also, when he took command as WB "Southeast", the situation in the Balkans had long since become muddled. After all, he demonstrably made an effort to conduct the war in a humane manner.

First, his work and the work of the Austrian Air Force during World War I is examined. This is followed by the interwar period, in which Austria had to struggle with the same prohibitions and difficulties in building up an air force as the German Reich. The book concludes with a consideration of the situation in the 1930s, when the existence of a separate air force was announced.
