In the course of the American War of Independence from 1775 to 1783, the English crown under King George III hired up to 30,000 soldiers from various German princely courts to reinforce its small number of troops. In carefully negotiated contracts, the respective princes undertook to make contingents of their military available to Great Britain in the conflict with the North American colonies. In addition to alliance aspects, the financial side was the main motivation for these negotiations in order to reorganise the mostly deficit-ridden state coffers of the principalities. At the end of the war, the - Hessians - as they are generally referred to to this day, played a part in the creation of a new nation and brought back numerous experiences and memories to their old world.
This volume deals with the contingents of the Duchy of Brunswick and the troops of the Principalities of Hesse-Hanau and Anhalt-Zerbst. In addition to participation and deployment in combat operations, such as the campaign to Saratoga in 1777 and the garrison periods in Canada in 1783, the focus is on the organisation and appearance of the individual troop units.
With numerous previously unpublished illustrations and infographics, a comprehensive picture of the individual formations is presented.

Tactics and Strategy in the Prussian-Austrian War.
The scholarly examination of the 'causes' of the Austrian defeat in 1866 is as old as the war against rising Prussia itself. Already immediately after the war, the search for the reasons of the failures was eagerly pursued. At that time, it was believed that the fault lay in the wrong decisions of the army leadership and especially in the person of the commander-in-chief of the Imperial and Royal Northern Army, Feldzeugmeister Ludwig Ludwig. In the 20th century, the background to the defeat was sought on a political level on the one hand and on a military level on the other, with both aspects being closely intertwined. Even today, the main objects of investigation in the military perspective are the development of weapons technology, the (strategic) operational mistakes made during the campaign and the shortcomings of the Imperial and Royal Army as a result of the drastic austerity policy. In 1866, Austria went to war against Prussia with a tactic that was almost 60 years old and based on an overestimation of the historical tradition of military values.

This volume takes a close look at precisely this aspect. In the context of armed conflicts since the revolutionary and coalition wars against France, Austrian military doctrine, especially tactics, is presented and systematically analysed. In doing so, this treatise critically examines the backward recruitment as well as training system of the time and does not leave topics such as uniforming and equipment, everyday life of soldiers or communication untouched. However, the focus of the study is firstly on the use of firearms, which the Austrians despised, and secondly on the unshakeable belief in the invincibility of their own closed combat formations. A special role was attributed to the bayonet attack. Furthermore, the interaction of the different types of weapons in the war is shown and the complex interrelationships of strategic and tactical ideas are pointed out. It becomes apparent that the Imperial and Royal Austrian Army was one of the last 'Napoleonic' forces of all, and with its admirably courageous but hopelessly outdated fighting style was on lost ground in the industrial age.

From Samurai to Soldiers - Japan in the 1860s
From the early 17th century until the 1860s, Japan was ruled by samurai led by the Shoguns of the powerful Tokugawa dynasty. The long period of peace following almost incessant civil war had negative effects on the proficiency of these feudal warriors. When industrialized Western powers whose armies and navies were equipped with the most modern weapons began to take interest in Japan in the 1850s, a tumultuous period of reforms and radical changes ensued Bakumatsu. From this time emerged a country which had thoroughly albeit painfully rid itself of former taboos: modern rifles and artillery produced new tactics, while modern uniforms replaced the samurais former splendour in arms. Now even non-samurai could become fighting men. By the 1870s, the Emperor Meiji ruled over a new Japan which no longer had any use for its ancient warrior élite.

The Zeughaus Verlags third volume of the history of the samurai provides a detailed overview of the opposing parties as well as their respective military reforms. The reader is introduced to the various modern and traditional-minded combatants, from lowly but efficient regular infantry to the gallant desperadoes filling the ranks of the Shinsengumi. Rag-tag militias replaced proud and resplendently attired samurai fighting for a lost cause. Tactics, arms, clothing and equipment are presented in detail. The author describes the campaigns and battles which changed the countrys face between 1866 and 1869, and introduces the protagonists of the struggle which culminated in modern Japans entrance onto the world stage.

In this volume of Heere und Waffen, the author paints a detailed picture of the Russian cuirassiers and dragoons at the beginning of the 19th century. He has analysed numerous sources and enriches the existing publications - which are not as comprehensive as those on other armies - with a qualified account. This should find a large readership, as it covers the Napoleonic Wars, in which Russia played a not inconsiderable role. It is well known that many interested experts and laymen continue to study this period intensively.

In his publication, the author takes a very comprehensive and detailed look at the cuirassiers and dragoons. He describes how the organisation and structure developed, how the regiments were replenished, where they were deployed, what their armament and equipment looked like and, last but not least, how their uniforms appeared. The latter takes up a lot of space and is described as it developed. The reader must always bear in mind that it could take years from the promulgation of a decree to its full implementation. This applied to uniforms as well as armour and equipment. In the regiments belonging to the Guard, on which the eye of the ruler rested, these changes naturally progressed more quickly than was the case in the deep provinces of the vast Russian Empire. In the description of the regiments, special features of the Guards are presented from this perspective, but also from the point of view of their prominent position. An interesting aspect of the work is the detailed depiction of both combatants and non-combatants. The latter are often not mentioned at all in comparable publications. Here, on the other hand, not only is their uniform, armour and equipment described, but their specific function is also explained.

Overall, it can be said that this work can provide both military scientists and military historians with detailed insights as well as historical film makers, tin figure collectors and interested laymen with new insights. The clear structure of this work makes it easy to use as a reference work. The appended index of Russian terms and their German translation enables a clear conceptual categorisation in both languages.

The so-called "Galloglas" shaped Irish military history for centuries - from their appearance in the 13th century to the wars of the Tudor period in the late 16th century. If the warfare of Irish armies was characterised by lightning-like raids with equally rapid retreats, the Galloglas fought it out to the utmost, including Galloglas against Galloglas.
The bloody climax of Galloglas warfare came at the Battle of Knockdoe in 1504.
Described in contemporary accounts as violent and hulking, the warriors represented an Urrian phenomenon but were actually from the Scottish Hebridean islands.

This book describes the origins, history and disappearance of the Galloglas. It takes a look at their appearance, armament, pay, organisation and self-image of these warriors. The latest archaeological findings are also taken into account.
The book was produced in collaboration with Claíomh, one of Ireland's leading reenactment groups. Included are many depictions of reenactors as well as detailed photographs of weapons and equipment, contemporary illustrations, photographs of settings and a series of drawings.

The period around 1730-1732 is not insignificant for European and Saxon history. Saxony was an important political and military power in Europe during this period. It therefore makes sense to look at the appearance of the Saxon army - especially its uniforms. However, the sources available for this period are relatively thin, unlike those for the Seven Years' War, which began soon afterwards.
The aim of the work presented here is to explore the existing sources in greater depth, to evaluate them critically, to take new findings into account and, from this point of view, to present - as far as possible - an overall picture of the uniform of the Saxon army at this time. The author combines several strands of Saxon uniform studies: the study of 18th-century paintings in Saxon and Polish art galleries and castles, 19th-century reconstructions and the evaluation of the extensive and sometimes idiosyncratically structured source collections of Johannes Eichhorn (1903-1969).
For all those interested in military history and uniform studies as well as Saxon history, the study of this work should deepen or present new and expanded insights in overview and detail.

Many of the ancient Near Eastern peoples succumbed to the Assyrians' thirst for conquest. The Assyrians secured their power over these peoples through a skilful policy of alliances and dependencies. The Assyrians often only achieved this by military means. Some of these peoples, who defended themselves against the overpowering Assyria during the Sargonid period around 722-627 BC, are presented here. Unfortunately, there are very few contemporary illustrations of them - in contrast to the Assyrians. Their appearance had to be reconstructed on the basis of the few sources and artefacts found. Not much is known about the military system of most of the Assyrians' opponents either, so the little information that has been gathered has been included in this volume. These peoples experienced the upheavals of the time just as the Assyrians did. This period was also characterised by the final transition from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age, which was reflected in their equipment. The exchange of innovations with each other and with the Assyrians played a major role here. Ultimately, there were too many opponents and Assyria was weakened in many long battles, so that it was ultimately defeated.
The peoples of the Urartians, Elamites, Medes, Persians, Cimmerians, Philistines, Neo-Hittites, Scythians, Arameans, Chaldeans and others emerge from the darkness of history.

The first great empire in history was created by the Assyrians in the 7th century BC under the leadership of a series of important kings from the Sargonid dynasty. The basis for this was a well-organised and well-equipped military power. The king was in charge of the supreme leadership. The tightly organised Assyrian army had foot soldiers, horsemen, chariot troops, craftsmen and pioneers. Assyrian and foreign mercenaries, the army of the tax-paying inhabitants of the Assyrian empire, dependent vassals and allies were used. Their own resources, booty and an elaborate tribute system ensured the basis for exemplary military equipment. The transition from the Bronze to the Iron Age was already complete in Assyria. Depending on the required properties and availability, both materials were used. For over a century, the neighbouring cultures had little to oppose the Assyrians' expansionism. The Assyrian empire stretched from the Mediterranean to the Zagros Mountains, from southern Armenia to the Persian Gulf and for a short time also to Egypt.
Based on archaeological finds, this volume offers a comprehensive overview of the army of the Assyrians from their heyday to their catastrophic downfall.

This volume is the final part of the trilogy on the Austrian army from 1805 to 1809. In addition to the cavalry, artillery and pioneer corps examined in this third volume, even rarer types of troops such as the Generalquartiermeisterstab or the navy are considered. One chapter deals with the composition of the grenadier battalions in the 1809 campaign and thus offers a good complement to the first part of this series. Finally, there is a section at the end on the Tyrolean Uprising of 1809 including a look at the organisational structure and uniforms of the insurgents.
Similar to the previous two parts, the individual units of the troop types are presented with their development and formation history, with special consideration of the operations in the war of 1809. Especially the cavalry had a long tradition in the Habsburg multinational empire, an explanation for the large number of light cavalry such as hussars or ulans. But also the artillery as well as the pioneer corps were subject to some upheavals in the course of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, which are presented in detail in this volume.
This volume was also accompanied by a specialist editorial team, which ensures that the current state of knowledge on the history of the Austrian army is taken into account. In addition, in contrast to the original edition, the German translation is accompanied by numerous, hitherto largely unknown, illustrations that give the reader a nice impression of the military units dealt with.
With the completion of the series, German-speaking readers have a detailed basis for researching the Austrian army on the threshold from the Revolutionary Wars to the "mass armies" of the late Napoleonic period.

In the second part of Enrico Acerbi's three-volume work on the Austrian Army from 1805 to 1809, he deals with rarely studied troops. In addition to the Feldjäger battalions, which should be even better known as line troops, this volume deals with the units of the military frontier as well as the Landwehr.
It is precisely the frontier regiments that underline the diversity of the peoples living in the border regions of the Habsburg Empire through their recruitment. After a historical introduction to the military frontier and its protection, especially against the Ottoman Empire, the author goes into detail about the individual frontier units and gives testimony to their deployment, especially for the campaign of 1809.
Even more important in the Austrian army organisation, however, is the Landwehr. Formed at the instigation of Archduke Charles, the Landwehr was intended to provide the active army with a reservoir of soldiers ready for action and to be deployed together with the Austrian line troops in the next military conflict. Acerbi describes the special features of the Landwehr formed in the individual parts of the Habsburg Empire and provides impressive insights into their deployment in the war of 1809 against Napoleon's armies.
In order to give Acerbi's descriptions of the formation history a visual impression of the troop units dealt with, numerous, mostly contemporary illustrations have been added to the German translation. For example, Eder's plates, presented here for the first time in a comprehensive form, show the variety of uniforms within the Austrian army. The significantly expanded picture section thus offers German-speaking readers added value compared to the original English edition.

If a historian had wanted to celebrate what was once Europe's greatest land power, Austria-Hungary, he certainly would not have chosen the terrible year of 1809. The Landshut War of Succession from 1504 to 1505 laid the foundations of the all-Bavarian duchy that later became the Kingdom of Bavaria. Maximilian I was able to distinguish himself as a general and as the head of the empire, Georg von Frundsberg acquired his first merits and Götz von Berlichingen lost a hand. His first crony and later opponent Conz von Schottenstein lived up to his reputation as a "hedge rider" and the "Bavarian Attila" devastated entire regions. As a result of the war, the military supremacy of the Electoral Palatinate, which had only existed for a short time, was lost.
The Landsknechts were able to establish themselves as a new type of warrior and proved their dominant role on the battlefield. The sites of the Landshut War of Succession, also known as the "Bavarian Feud", range from the Middle Rhine through Alsace and Lower Bavaria to Tyrol.
This book was produced in close cooperation with international re-enactment groups. It also includes colour illustrations and some of Wolfgang Braun's excellent reconstruction drawings.

No era and no region shape our idea of piracy as much as the "Golden Age" of the Buccaneers and Filibusters in the Caribbean of the 17th and early 18th centuries. Entire pirate fleets made the trade routes unsafe during this period, hunting both the great Spanish treasure galleons and the many small merchant ships that plied between the islands and the mainland. Even heavily fortified cities were not safe from their attacks. At a time when the European colonial powers had insufficiently penetrated the New World, privateers played an important role in war as well-organised "communities of violence", but could rarely be subdued afterwards in peace.
This volume provides an overview of the development of Caribbean piracy from 1600 to about 1725, describing the colourful social composition of pirate crews. Using contemporary sources and archaeological finds, pirates' weapons, clothing and ships are presented. Wreck finds, including the discovery of the "Queen Anne's Revenge", the mighty flagship of the feared pirate "Blackbeard", have considerably increased our knowledge of the way of life of privateer crews. On this basis and thanks to numerous illustrations, a well-founded overview of the "Golden Age of Piracy" emerges.

The Venetian War of 1487 between the maritime superpower Venice and the Alpine archduchy of Tyrol began for trivial reasons and led to considerable political upheaval - especially in Tyrol. The conflict is closely linked to the partly tragic, partly bizarre biography of Archduke Siegmund of Tyrol.
The Venetian War stood at the threshold between the end of the Middle Ages and the beginning of the modern era: on the one hand, the battle for the town and castle of Rovereto, fought with heavy artillery, and on the other hand, the chivalrous duel between Johann von Waldburg-Sonnenberg and Antonia Maria da Sanseverino.
The battle of Calliano was decisive: a veteran of the Burgundian wars on the one hand, a highly respected condottiere on the other, against the breathtaking mountain backdrop of the Adige valley. For the first time, the new warrior type "Landsknechte" was decisive for the battle.
The material remains of the Venetian War are partly still visible today and a scientific treasure trove for archaeologists and cultural historians.
This book was produced in close cooperation with re-enactment groups from Italy, Austria and Germany. It also contains detailed images of weapons, colour illustrations and some of Wolfgang Braun's excellent reconstruction drawings.

In the middle of the 16th century, the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation was shaken by a series of conflicts that already anticipated the confessional disputes of the Thirty Years' War. In 1546/47, the Schmalkaldic League rose up against Emperor Charles V. After several fruitless campaigns, the troops of the League were decisively defeated in Mühlberg in Saxony in 1547. When the emperor's most important ally, Moritz of Saxony, sided with the rebellious Protestant princes a little later, a new uprising against the emperor took place in 1552, which was finally settled only by the Religious Peace of Augsburg.

Brothers of knights and mercenary armies in the 15th century. After its bloody defeat at the Battle of Tannenberg in 1410, the Order's state in Prussia was in a phase of decline. In 1454, the Prussian towns and knights rose up against the rule of the brethren of the Order and allied themselves with the King of Poland. A thirteen-year war broke out. The crusading enthusiasm that had brought huge armies of voluntarily serving knights to the Order at the height of its power had died out in the meantime. Instead, mercenaries dominated the warfare. Their upkeep consumed enormous sums of money and when the Order could no longer raise the necessary funds, the mercenaries themselves seized control of the country.
This volume deals with the army system of this last significant conflict in the history of the Teutonic Order. In addition to the composition of the individual armies, the equipment and tactical deployment of the mercenary armies are analysed and the course of the Thirteen Years' War is traced. Thus a multi-faceted picture of late medieval military history emerges.
