Hawker Hurricane Mk II trop Reconnaissance variants

In British reconnaissance aviation, as in fighter aviation, the Hurricane remained in the shadow of the Spitfire. However, where the famous PR Spitfires were in short supply, Hurricanes were used successfully. This was particularly the case where the most intense and interesting operations were taking place: in the Mediterranean and the Far East.

Hawker Hurricane Mk.II is a development of the famous fighter designed by Sydney Camm, created by installing a more powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin XX engine equipped with a two-stage supercharger in a standard airframe. This solution significantly improved performance. The new version designated Hurricane Mk.IIa, with unchanged armament, was first flown on June 11, 1940, and was soon followed by a variant with twelve 7.69 mm machine guns in the wings, designed Hurricane Mk IIb. Unfortunately, the small calibre of the weapon did not significantly change the effectiveness of fire, especially against armoured targets. The situation was improved by the introduction of the Mk IIc version, armed with four 20mm cannons.

Serial Hurricane Mk.II trop fighters were converted for reconnaissance duties in two main ways. In 1941, real Hurricane PR.IIs were being developed at the Heliopolis base in Egypt - unarmed, equipped with a set of cameras, and in place of guns in the wings they had additional fuel tanks installed to increase range. The second variant were tactical reconnaissance aircraft, called Tac-R - which differed from fighters only in having a photo camera and an additional radio to enable communication with ground troops. They were armed, but often some of the guns were removed to reduce the weight of the aircraft, loaded after all with additional photographic equipment. They often even had bomb racks.

Aircraft used for intensive training and test flights. The unit took part in training interception exercises involving B-25B bombers from James H. Doolittles unit, prior to the Tokyo raid in April 1942. The provisional camouflage and visible wear are the result of frequent flying and repeated repainting.

Curtiss P-36C Hawk a short production run at the dawn of a new era

The Curtiss P-36 Hawk was the first modern American fighter aircraft introduced into frontline service with the USAAC. It was developed in response to rapid changes in global military aviation during the second half of the 1930s and marked a clear departure from earlier biplane designs. Retractable landing gear, an enclosed cockpit, and an all-metal airframe made it the starting point for subsequent generations of American fighter aircraft.
P-36C Features

The P-36C variant represented the final stage in the development of the design and was produced in a very limited series. The last thirty P-36A airframes were completed to this new standard, introducing the Pratt & Whitney R-1830-17 engine rated at 1,200 hp along with reinforced armament. Aircraft of this version were fitted with additional .30-caliber machine guns in the wings, with distinctive externally visible containers for spent cartridges mounted under the wings a feature that became one of the most easily recognizable characteristics of the P-36C.

The small number of aircraft produced meant that P-36Cs did not form separate, uniform units but were instead dispersed among squadrons operating mainly earlier P-36A variants. Their largest concentration was within the 27th Pursuit Squadron, which became a natural base for operational trials and testing of new solutions, including experimental camouflage schemes.
P-36C in 27th Pursuit Squadron

Aircraft of the 27th Pursuit Squadron played a key role in the camouflage experiments conducted in 1939. The culmination of these efforts was the participation of P-36Cs in the National Air Races held in September 1939 in Cleveland, Ohio. The aircraft displayed there attracted attention with bold, high-contrast, and often temporary paint schemes, applied without unified guidelines and treated as a testing ground for future standards.
Eglin Field and P-36 vs Doolittle bombers

Another unit operating the P-36C was the 23rd Composite Group based at Eglin Field, Florida. This was the location of the Air Corps Proving Ground, where fighter and bomber tactics were refined and extensive research work was carried out. The same facility later trained B-25B crews for the famous Tokyo raid in April 1942, with P-36 aircraft also taking part in training bomber gunners.

As a result, the Curtiss P-36C entered history as one of the most ambiguous and visually diverse Hawk variants. The short production run, dispersal among units and intensive testing meant that nearly every aircraft differed in equipment details and external appearance, making this version particularly attractive to researchers and modelers interested in the transitional period in the development of American fighter

The P-51K was the variant of the legendary Mustang produced at the North American Aviation plant in Dallas as an evolution of the P-51D. Nakajima Ki-43 II Hayabusa 70087

The Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa (Peregrine Falcon), known to the Allies as Oscar, was the primary fighter of the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force for most of World War II. Comparable in role to the Spitfire or Messerschmitt Bf 109, it remained in continuous development and production throughout the conflict.

Although often overshadowed by the famous Mitsubishi A6M Zero, the Hayabusa played a crucial role over mainland Asia and the Pacific in China, Burma, Malaya, the Philippines and New Guinea. In the early stages of the war, its exceptional manoeuvrability and climb rate made it a formidable opponent, capable of outclassing many Allied fighters.

Designed in the late 1930s by Nakajima and based on experience with the Ki-27, the aircraft followed a lightweight philosophy focused on agility and performance, achieved at the expense of armour protection and heavy armament. This reflected Japanese air combat doctrine, which emphasised manoeuvrability and pilot skill.

As the war progressed, the Ki-43 became increasingly outdated and was gradually replaced by more advanced types such as the Ki-84 Hayate. Nevertheless, it remained in service until the end of the war, including use in special attack units.

History of the P-51D Mustang VLR
P-51D Mustang VLR the Longest Reach over Japan

In the Pacific, the Mustang was not initially welcomed as enthusiastically as it had been in Europe. Many pilots placed greater trust in the Lockheed P-38 Lightning and Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, both of which offered more confidence during flights over ocean and jungle. Only in late 1944 did wider conversion to the North American P-51 Mustang begin, and after the capture of Iwo Jima the type was assigned to VLR duties escorting Boeing B-29 Superfortress bombers over Japan.
Very Long Range Standard

The VLR Very Long Range standard included additional fuel tanks as well as revised radio and navigation equipment, making long over-water missions possible. The typical escort configuration used 110-gallon underwing tanks, giving sufficient range for flights from Iwo Jima to Tokyo and back. These tanks were characteristic of Pacific operations and differed from the more common European configurations.
Strike Missions and Flexible VLR Configurations

Strike missions also employed rockets against airfields and transport targets. Because rockets increased aerodynamic drag, they were often paired with streamlined 150-gallon drop tanks taken from the Lockheed P-38 Lightning.

Different missions required different loadouts. Mustangs operating from Iwo Jima might escort bomber formations one day and attack ground targets the next.
Very Long Range Units over Japan

Units operating in this role included the 506th Fighter Group and the 21st Fighter Group. Their pilots flew long missions over open ocean, where success depended as much on fuel, weather, and mechanical reliability as on combat skill.
The Legacy of the Mustang VLR

Flights from Iwo Jima were among the longest ever flown by Allied single-engine fighters, proving the exceptional versatility of the Mustang. The VLR version became one of the most interesting P-51D variants and a symbol of the final air campaign against Japan.

Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat was the U.S. Navys main carrier fighter during the opening phase of the Pacific War. It was this version that entered combat after the attack on Pearl Harbor, when the American fleet had to halt Japans offensive advance. Although less manoeuvrable than the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zero, the Wildcat was tough, well protected compared with enemy aircraft, and capable of returning even after severe damage.

The F4F-3 had fixed, non-folding wings and was armed with four .50 calibre machine guns. It was valued for its rugged construction, stability as a gun platform, and reliability during operations over the open ocean.

In the first months of the war, Wildcats took part in a series of American carrier raids against advanced Japanese bases across the Pacific. Their main role was escorting carrier bombers and defending the task force against enemy attacks. Even then, several pilots scored their first victories in the F4F-3, beginning the path to fighter ace status.

The F4F-3 played an important role in the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942 the first naval battle in history fought entirely by aircraft operating from carriers. Wildcats protected their own ships and strike aircraft.

A weakness of the F4F-3 was the lack of folding wings, which limited the number of aircraft that could be carried aboard carriers. For that reason, after the Battle of the Coral Sea, units were rapidly re-equipped with the newer Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat, while older F4F-3s were gradually moved to secondary duties.

Although the F4F-3s frontline carrier service was brief, it was this variant that carried the burden of fighter combat in the hardest period of the war, when the outcome of the Pacific struggle was still uncertain.
