These changes created an army and air force upon which the country would rely when it became obvious the international community would take no action to implement guarantees made after the Suez Crisis.
The Israeli forces were honed in low level clashes during the 1960s, notably the Water Wars which the Israelis did so much to provoke. By contrast the Arab forces became complacent usually due to supplies of arms from the Warsaw Pact but, with proper training, this complacency could have been turned into military effectiveness but the Arab forces were plagued by the fact command too often depended upon political reliability which undermined their effectiveness.
In the case of the Egyptian forces their effectiveness was further undermined by their commitment to the debilitating Yemen Civil War which meant they were in no condition to confront Israel. Syria and Jordan, whose forces alone could not fight the Israelis, complained loudly about President Nassers lack of action against Egypt. In the spring of 1967 he decided to regain the prestige he had lost since the heady days of the Suez Crisis with a demonstration in the Sinai Peninsula. This was interpreted by the Israelis as preparations for an invasion. Nasser did nothing to persuade them otherwise and when it was clear the international community would do nothing the Israelis decided to strike.

Initially they aimed to attack only Egypt but Syria and Jordan then provoked attacks upon their territory. The Israeli campaign was heralded by a massive surprise air attack first on the Egyptians and then on the other neighbouring states and ground offensives then followed in succession as the war, like Topsy in Uncle Toms Cabin "just growed". These campaigns were not always examples of military perfection, as will be seen, and the general post-war back-slapping drowned out serious questions about the future of Israels army.

In doing so it examines the air forces involvement in the October 1973 Arab-Israeli War, and then the showdown with the Iranian-supported Kurdish insurgency in northern Iraq in 1974-1975. These two affairs taught the Iraqis that numbers alone did not make an air force. Correspondingly, during the second half of the 1970s, Baghdad embarked on a project based on full technology transfer from France, which was intended to result in preparing the IrAF for the twenty-first century.
This process hardly began when the new ruler in Baghdad, Saddam Hussein at-Tikriti, led his country into an invasion of neighbouring Iran, embroiling it in a ruinous, eight-year-long war. This volume details the events leading up to the beginning of that war and its opening moves in the air.
Although virtually "born in battle", collecting precious combat experience and playing an important role in so many internal and external conflicts, the Iraqi Air Force remains one of the least known and most misinterpreted military services in the Middle East. Richly illustrated, "Wings of Iraq", Volume 2, provides a uniquely compact yet comprehensive guide to its operational history, its crucial officers and aircraft, and its major operations between 1970 and 1980.

Accordingly, Baghdad began a project in the second half of the 1970s that was based on a comprehensive technology transfer from France and was intended to prepare the Iraqi air force for the 21st century.
century. No sooner had this process begun than the new ruler in Baghdad, Saddam Hussein at-Tikriti, led his country into an invasion of neighbouring Iran and embroiled it in a ruinous eight-year war. This volume describes the events leading up to the start of this war and the first air strikes.
Although the Iraqi Air Force was practically 'born in battle', gaining valuable combat experience and playing an important role in many internal and external conflicts, it remains one of the least known and most misunderstood military services in the Middle East. This richly illustrated work offers a uniquely compact yet comprehensive guide to the history of the Iraqi Air Force, its key officers and aircraft, and its most important operations between 1970 and 1980.

These years saw the Arab countries and their military forces caught up in the events of the Second World War.
For those Arab nations which had some degree of independence, the resulting political, cultural and economic strains had a profound impact upon their military forces. In Egypt the Army generally remained quiet, continuing with its often unglamorous and little appreciated duties. Within the Royal Egyptian Air Force (REAF), however, there were a significant number of men who wanted to take action in expectation of what they, and many around the world, expected to be the defeat of the British Empire.
The result was division, widespread mistrust, humiliation, and for a while the grounding of the entire REAF. In Iraq the strains of the early war years sowed the seeds of a yet to come direct armed confrontation with the British.
Volume 6 of "Air Power and the Arab World" then looks at the first efforts to revive both the REAF and the Royal Iraqi Air Force (RIrAF), along with events in the air and on the ground elsewhere in the Arab world from 1939 until March 1941.

In Egypt, the army generally kept quiet and continued to fulfil its often inglorious and unappreciated duties. In the Royal Egyptian Air Force (REAF), however, there were a significant number of men who wanted to take action in anticipation of what they and many others in the world expected to be the defeat of the British Empire.
The result was division, widespread distrust, humiliation and, at times, the cessation of the entire REAF. In Iraq, the hardships of the early years of the war laid the foundations for a later direct armed confrontation with the British.
Volume 6 of Air Power and the Arab World then looks at the initial efforts to revitalise the REAF and the Royal Iraqi Air Force (RIrAF), as well as events in the air and on the ground in the Arab world from 1939 to March 1941.

Great Britain and these three states have had various mutual defence treaties since centuries. This resulted in establishment of very close ties between the British and the Sultan of Omans armed forces. Since 1920s, the British seconded and contract personnel served with the latter services through forming, leading, advising and training them.

Tracing the development of hostilities in the Middle East, this book covers the period from the establishment of the first proper Israeli Air Force in 1948 to the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982. Israel's War of Independence against its Arab neighbours, the inevitable 'round two', the Suez Crisis of 1956, the Six Day War of 1967, the Yom Kippur wars of 1973 and the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982 are all detailed in this fascinating chronicle of war in the Middle East.

It was a period when those Arab states which had real or merely theoretical independence were more or less allied with European countries that were gearing up to face the growing Fascist and Nazi threats. Unfortunately, these anti-Fascist and anti-Nazi countries were themselves the imperial powers, France and the United Kingdom, which were still seeking to maintain their domination of the greater part of the Arab World. To say that this complicated the situation, and strained the loyalties of the men of the newly emergent Arab air forces would be an understatement.
Volume 5 of the "Air Power and the Arab World" series therefore seeks to shed light on a difficult and widely misunderstood time. It draws upon decades of research, including previously unpublished interviews with men now dead, archive sources that have never before been translated into a European language and material which, though available in obscure Arabic publications, has been almost entirely neglected by aviation historians. Dr. David Nicolle especially wishes to acknowledge the contribution of his late colleague, Air Vice Marshal Dr. Gabr Ali Gabr, without whose scholarly research and publications this series would never have got off the ground, let alone been published.
This volume is richly illustrated with specially commissioned colour artworks illustrating the aircraft flown by the air forces in the Arab world during this dynamic period of time.

Volume 5 of the "Air Power and the Arab World" series therefore attempts to shed light on a difficult and widely misunderstood period. It focusses upon the first two weeks of the Palestine War, from 15 May to 1 June 1948.
By that time, in Egypt, Iraq, Transjordan, newly-independent Syria and Lebanon, and to a lesser extent Saudi Arabia, significant efforts had already been made to strengthen these countries armed forces. Where Egypt, Iraq and Syria were concerned, these efforts included a determination to improve or, in the case of Syria to establish, their air forces. All three air forces had been thrown into the First Phase of the Palestine War (see Volume 9) and, in the view of most subsequent commentators or historians, they had failed to perform as well as their government and populations had expected. However, closer investigation and the removal of layers of propaganda which have obscured the realities of this first Arab-Israeli War show that the Arab air forces performed better than is generally realised. Arguably, they have had their limitations and weaknesses, and these had also become apparent as the fighting intensified and losses began to mount. All this was always clearly pointed out in Arabic sources, both official and unofficial, unpublished or published only with limited circulation.

Volume 10 of "Air Power and the Arab World" focusses upon day-to-day events on the ground, in the air and at sea during this hard-fought phase. It does so in remarkable detail because the authors had access to previously unpublished Arab official military documents supplemented by translations from Arabic books and articles containing official and personal accounts by those involved. Perhaps the most remarkable such source is the Operational Diary of the REAFs Tactical Air Force based at al-Arish in north-eastern Sinai, which is available from 8th June 1948 until the end of the Palestine War.

One way or the other, the Iraqi Air Force significantly contributed ? and financed ? the further development of this type, but also influenced research and development of a number of further systems that followed in its wake ? most of which eventually found their way into operational service in France. While the Mirage F.1 has attracted at least some coverage in English language publications, its acquisition and combat deployment by Iraq still remains a topic with not a few controversies. The purpose of this volume is to redress the balance and provide an in-depth insight into the acquisition process, development and equipment of custom-tailored variants made for Iraq, training of Iraqi personnel on the type, and its combat deployment during wars against Iran, 1980-1988, and against the US-led, so-called Gulf Coalition, in 1991 and afterwards.Originally envisaged and acquired as a ?pure? interceptor, before long the Mirage F.1 in Iraqi service proved a highly capable multi-role platform aircraft, and was widely deployed not only for ground attack but also anti-shipping purposes, as an aerial tanker, and for delivering long-range pinpoint attacks.Illustrated with over 120 photographs and many color profiles, this book provides a unique, single point of reference on camouflage, markings, and armament configurations of Mirage F.1s in Iraqi service.

Since September 1962, hardly a week passed without a major armed confrontation or an outright war in Yemen. The number of long-lasting insurgencies, mutinies, rebellions, or terrorism-related activities that took place during this period is going into dozens. Despite duration of all these conflicts and although they may have caused as many as half a million of deaths, the rest of the World heard very little about them. At best, Yemen is nowadays known as a hotbed of international terrorism, an area that is on the receiving end of frequent US air strikes flown by UAVs, or as 'some place' fiercely bombarded by a coalition led by Saudi Arabia. While at least some details about British aerial operations in what was Southern Arabia of the 1960s were published over the years, next to nothing is known about activities of other, 'local' air forces - like those of Egypt - and even less so about that of Yemen. This is even more surprising considering that for nearly two decades there were no less than two, fully developed services of that kind - one operated by what was then North Yemen, another by what used to be South Yemen - and that these were deeply involved in the Cold War, too. Using newly released secret intelligence sources, neglected memoirs, and popular memory, this book is telling the story of military flying in Yemen between 1962 and 1994. It is providing in-depth insights and analysis of campaigns fought by the Egyptian air force of the 1960s, the creation of two Yemeni air forces in the 1970s, an entire series of inter-Yemeni wars of the 1980s and 1990s. Containing over 140 photographs, color profiles, maps and extensive tables, Hot Skies over Yemen is a richly illustrated and unique point of reference about one segment of modern aerial warfare that remains entirely unknown until today.

Illustrated with around 120 photos, colour aircraft profiles, tables and maps, this volume provides a detailed overview of air warfare operations that have received little attention to date.

That was back in the 9th Century A.D. Nigh on a thousand years later the Arab World's critical strategic location made it almost inevitable that these regions would be drawn into the imperial rivalries of the leading European powers, while the Ottoman Empire struggled to maintain its existing position in the area. This in turn meant that the first bombs to be dropped by military aircraft fell on Arab soil. Not surprisingly, as the Arab countries slowly achieved their independence, they too wanted to have air forces. In 1948 the first such Arab air forces were thrown into battle in an ill-fated attempt to keep Palestine as a primarily Arab country. Based on decades of consistent research, but also newly available sources in both Arabic and various European languages, and richly illustrated with a wide range of authentic photography, Volume 1 of the "Air Power and the Arab World, 1909-1955" mini-series is telling the story of the men and machines of the first half century of military aviation in the Arab World.

The battles of the Entente against the Central Powers in the Near and Middle East also saw the multiple deployment of air forces on both sides. The deployment of air units by the Turks, Germans, British, French etc. on the fronts of the Near and Middle East between 1914-1918 is described in detail.

The origins of the force lie in the Imperial Iranian Air Force (IIAF), which became operational with its first fully trained pilots in 1925. Until World War Two, the IIAF inventory consisted entirely of European aircraft, however, following the British and Soviet invasion of Iran, the IIAFs bases were occupied and all aircraft destroyed. In this book, Babak Taghvaee examines the inventory of the IIAF during both world wars.

These years saw the Arab countries and their military forces already caught up in the events of the Second World War. For those Arab nations which had some degree of independence, the resulting political, cultural and economic strains had a profound impact upon their military forces. In Egypt the Army generally remained quiet, continuing with its mostly unglamorous and little appreciated duties.

Within the Royal Egyptian Air Force (REAF), however, there were a significant number of men who wanted to take action in expectation of what they, and many around the world, expected to be the defeat of the British Empire. The result was division, widespread mistrust, humiliation and for a while the grounding of the entire REAF. In Iraq the strains of the early war years led to a political coup, military conflict with the British Empire and the virtual destruction of the Royal Iraqi Air Force (RIrqAF). Volume 7 of "Air Power and the Arab World" then looks at the first efforts to revive both the REAF and the RIrqAF, along with events in the air and on the ground elsewhere in the Arab world until the end of 1942.

This was rudely interrupted in 2004, when the government opened the first of six campaigns against the movement colloquially known as "Houthis". The Yemeni Air Force - partially re-equipped over the previous years - saw intensive involvement in this conflict, but proved insufficient. In late 2009 and through 2010, the war spread into Saudi Arabia, which reacted with its first military intervention in the country. A host of long-simmering internal conflicts culminated in the second Saudi-led military intervention in Yemen, launched in March 2015. Although run along widely accepted Western doctrine of aerial warfare, and highly effective, the campaign in question experienced a number of massive problems - primarily related to unexpected developments and extremely complex relations between multiple parties in Yemen. That the air forces of the Saudi-led alliance involved in the ongoing campaign in Yemen are operating some of most modern combat aircraft and weaponry manufactured in the West is no secret. But, exactly how, why, when, and where are they deploying weapons systems in question and for what purpose remains entirely unknown in the public. Thanks to approach to first-hand sources, this volume is providing answers to precisely these questions and thus providing an exclusive insight into the conduct of operations by such modern aircraft types like F-15S, F-16E and F, Eurofighter 2000 "Typhoon", and Mirage 2000. Containing over 140 photographs, colour profiles, maps and extensive tables, "Hot Skies over Yemen" is a richly illustrated and unique point of reference about one segment of modern aerial warfare that remains entirely unknown until today.

Although the Western doctrine of air warfare was widespread and highly effective, the campaign in question had a number of massive problems - essentially involving unexpected developments and extremely complex relationships between several of the parties involved in the conflict in Yemen. Almost immediately, a number of foreign customers pressed Moscow for deliveries of this long-overdue type, expected to succeed the popular MiG-21 as a standard interceptor. Correspondingly, large numbers of MiG-23 interceptors and fighter-bombers were exported to five major Arab air forces in the mid-1970s.This is a detailed history of the operational service of this Soviet-manufactured interceptor and its fighter-bomber variants in service with Algerian, Egyptian, Iraqi, Libyan, and Syrian air forces, since 1974. While Egypt purchased only a handful before its final break with Moscow, and Algeria limited related acquisitions, Iraq, Libya and Syria continued purchasing advanced variants in significant numbers through the 1980s. The units operating MiG-23s were soon transformed into the backbone of the military services in question, and they saw combat service in a number of intensive military conflicts. In the 1980s, they fought against Israeli jets over Lebanon, against the Iranians in the Iran-Iraq War, and confronted U.S. Navy's F-14s on numerous occasions off Libya. In 1991 Iraqi MiG-23s were deployed in combat against the US-led coalition's F-15s. Indeed, in Syria, different versions of MiG-23 continue flying combat operations today.Illustrated with over 110 photographs - many of these never published before - color profiles and a dozen maps, this volume provides a unique point of reference, revealing much detail about camouflage patterns, unit insignia and aircraft markings.

Officially losses where tiny; only one F-14 was lost in aerial combat (to a MiG-21), one to a control problem and one downed by a ground-to-air missile. This book looks at the F-14s Iranian combat history and includes first hand accounts from the pilots themselves. It will consider key engagements and the central figures involved, illustrating the realities, successes and failures of the Iranian air campaign.

Sukhoi and developed in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s are far less-well-known in the West. Re-established in the early 1950s, the Sukhoi Design Bureau initially followed the same path as its primary competitor and designed two fighters, one equipped with swept wing, and the other with delta-wing. In the West, they became known under the ASCC/NATO-codename "Fitter".
Through the 1960s, and unlike MiG, Sukhoi continued developing its "Fitters", resulting in an entire family of airframes, equipped with ever better avionics and more powerful engines. Its Su-7BMKs (ASCC/NATO-codename "Fitter-A") entered service with Egypt in 1966, Syria and Iraq in 1967, followed by Algeria a year later. In 19721973, Su-17, and then Su-20 - the second generation of this design, and the first equipped with variable-sweep wing - entered service in Egypt, followed by Iraq and Syria. Finally, in 19781979, the third and final generation - including variants such as the Su-22, Su-22M, Su-22M-3, and Su-22M-4 (ASCC/NATO-codenames "Fitter F/G/J/K", respectively) - entered service in Iraq, followed by Libya, Syria, and Yemen. Highly appreciated - and often outright beloved - by their pilots and ground crews alike, they formed the backbone of the fighter-bomber fleets of these six air forces, and saw action in about a dozen different wars.

Richly illustrated with a host of exclusive photographs and custom-drawn colour profiles, "Fitters of the Middle East" is the first title ever offering a comprehensive and inclusive operational history of "Fitters" with six major air forces.
