Generally Northern cavalry were better equipped than their Southern counterparts. By 1863 every Union trooper was guaranteed a carbine in addition to his revolvers and saber. Carbines were shorter in overall length, less cumbersome to carry mounted or dismounted, and easier to operate from horseback. However, their accuracy was greatly diminished compared to that of other long guns. Most carbines were .52 or .56 caliber single-shot breech loading weapons and were manufactured by several different companies, with the most common types being the Burnside or Smith carbine, or the Sharps rifle. Late in 1863, the seven-shot Spencer repeating carbine was introduced, but it was rarely deployed. This Union cavalry corporal carries a New Model 1863 Sharps Carbine. These .52 caliber Sharps carbines were one of the most popular weapons issued to Federal mounted troops and were produced from 1863 to 1865.

Geldings were preferred for cavalry horses with the purchase of mares strictly prohibited outside absolute military emergency. Animals were preferred to be dark colors and were required to be free from defects such as shallow breathing, deformed hooves or bones. The three-inch letters US were hot branded on a new horses left shoulders and additional hoof brands identified each animals unit. Morgans were a favored mount by cavalry soldiers in the Civil War. They were sensible under fire and could march tirelessly all day. They maintained their condition on unpredictable rations and were usually loyal to their riders. The war depleted the countrys supply of quality horses, so the boards often accepted mustangs or stock bred from Morgan or thoroughbred stallions and mustang mares. Though the horses quality was often unequal, the military generally obtained good horses at reasonable prices.

The regiment was raised and organized in Rome, New York and was known as the 5th Oneida Regiment. Another nickname, and more widely known by civil war historians, was Hallecks Infantry, after New York born Major General Henry Halleck. You will notice Gen Hallecks name on this figures flag. At first the regiment wore the regular dark blue Federal state jacket, light blue trousers, and standard forage cap. In June of 1863 the regiment switched, changing their uniforms to the colorful zouave dress. This new uniform was not actually zouave, but rather the colorful dress of French-Turco style with the most distinctive features being the sky blue zouave jacket with yellow trimming, a red fez with yellow tassel, sky blue trousers with red sash.

He carries a Virginia state flag first adopted in April of 1861, and readopted again in 1912. Several variations of this flag survive in numerous collections, some with additional mottos or bullion trim along one or more of the edges. In the center of this blue flag is the seal of the Commonwealth of Virginia featuring a standing allegorical figure of virtue having vanquished tyranny, symbolized by a fallen king at her feet. She has an exposed breast in the manner of classical depictions of Amazon with the motto Sic Semper Tyrannis at the bottom, meaning "Thus always to tyrants."

Easily carried on the march, they are loud enough for clear communication of orders over the din and confusion of combat. The responsibility of the Fife and Drum Corps was to communicate these directions in battle and in camp - as well as help move injured to field hospitals immediately following an engagement. A Civil War Fife and Drum Corps would include a Drum Major, Fifers, and Drummers playing both the snare drum and bass drum. Normally attached to a regiment, the size of the Fife and Drum Corps would range from as little as 7 or 8 to as many as 20 men. This infantry drummer is wearing a unique southern made frock coat.

Indeed, the slouch hat came to be the quintessential Confederate infantry headgear by the end of the American Civil War and would go on to see usage during the Indian Wars, the Spanish-American War, and even World War One. The Confederate civilian style slouch hat was adopted for numerous reasons: it was well-liked, practical, and available when kepis were not. Moreover, the slouch hat was found to be more pragmatic, being both comfortable, and most importantly, providing better protection against the elements of sun, wind, and rain.

They would make breakfast before sunrise, pack up camp, set out on the march at daylight, and would continue marching throughout the day, usually fixing dinner at dark. Soldiers would march in any kind of weather: heat, cold, rain, or snow. Rarely did marching occur on good roads as they typically marched through mud and water - it truly was A Hard Road to Travel. Both Confederate soldiers march with confidence to the next campaign with hopes of quickly ending the war. They carry regulation Confederate field equipment with standard 3-band rifled muskets and wear unique Confederate frock coats.

Grant has been widely acclaimed by both his contemporaries and historians as an exceptional horseman. Grant was a commanding general - the first to reach the same rank as George Washington. Born in Ohio near the Ohio River, Grant grew up around horses. He came to admire and love them, and possessing a natural affinity, rode, travelled, and managed horses at an early age. His father Jesse placed much confidence in his ability and gave him tasks involving horses that were rarely expected of a youth. From boyhood through his illustrious military career, Grant had a well-established reputation for training and managing horses. As a cadet he set a high jump record at West Point that stood for a quarter- century. Grant would ride several horses during the Civil War and was particularly attached to one named Cincinnati.
