But it is not only the wilderness that is a ruthless opponent, but above all hostile Indian tribes that make life difficult for him and his friends. He marries the Mandan Indian Mato-wea in order to have life insurance in the wilderness. It is a marriage of convenience, for of course he wants to marry a respectable white woman when he returns to St. Louis.

When little Claire is born, he begins to have doubts about his abundantly pragmatic attitude, for he has to admit that he cares far more for Mato-wea and the little daughter than he had intended. When Blackfeet raid the post, his life spirals out of control. An exciting story from the time of the fur trade on the Upper Missouri told from three points of view: the French trapper Pierre DuMont, his Indian wife Mato-wea and Wambli-luta a self-confident and dangerous Lakota warrior. Wambli-luta and Mato-wea are also linked by fate, for he had spared her life during an attack on the Mandan village and has since believed in a providence of spirits. The life paths of the three characters intertwine in an adventurous way.

He attended boarding school at Saint Francis Mission and learned English there, but without ever forgetting his mother tongue, Lakota. After his school education, he joined the American armed forces and fought in the Pacific during World War II. He was a gifted boxer and trained Indian children even after his time in the army. Throughout his life he saw himself as an ambassador for his people, sharing their history and culture with all who truly wanted to learn. He travelled tirelessly as an artist, spokesman and messenger for his people and also tried to promote the economic development of the tribe.
