Late in the summer 1759, Québec, the capital of New France, was under siege. British Major General James Wolfe had the city surrounded and cut off from reinforcements in Montréal, Vice Admiral Charles Saunders was in firm control of the rivers surrounding the city as well as the supply routes into the region. The French population found itself low on food and ammunition to defend themselves, and suffering daily bombardment by the English. The walls of Québec were manned by militiamen and sailors taken from French ships lost or anchored above the city for their protection. Lieutenant Général Louis-Joseph de Montcalm-Grozon and his aide-de-camp Louis-Antoine de Bougainville commanded the French regulars outside the city, moving them in rapid deployments to counter the British advances.Here the story is told by the citizens within the walls: an artillery captain, a prominent citizen, the emissary traveling between the British and the French commanders, and a Catholic nun working in the main hospital, treating the sick and wounded of both armies. Three of these works are offered in English for the first time, and all four are fully annotated. These journals and memoirs bring us inside the siege, allowing us to watch through their eyes as the fate of New France was determined.

During the American War of Independence (1775-83), Congress issued almost 800 letters of marque as a way of combating Britain's overwhelming naval and mercantile superiority. At first, it was only fishermen and the skippers of small merchant ships who turned to privateering, with mixed results. Indeed, Jeremiah O'Brien's privateer Unity successfully fought the first sea engagement of the Revolutionary War in the Battle of Machias of 1775. With just 40 men, their guns, axes, and pitchforks and the words "Surrender to America", he managed to capture a British armed schooner. By the end of the war, some of the largest American privateers could venture as far as the British Isles, and were more powerful than most contemporary warships in the fledgling US Navy. A small number of Loyalist privateers also put to sea during the war, and preyed on the shipping of their rebel countrymen. Packed with fascinating insights into the age of privateers, this book traces the development of these remarkable ships, and explains how they made such a significant contribution to the American Revolutionary War.

In 1778 Great Britain set in motion a series of events which led to the second British southern invasion of the American Revolutionary War. Unlike the first invasion in 1776 which ended British hopes of a speedy end to the conflict, pressure from the former royal governors of the southern states and false expectations of more loyalists flocking to the crown's colors along with a perceived weaker colonial defenses gave the British an opportunity to hope for a different outcome. General Clinton, Commander of British military forces in North America, ordered an expedition of 3,000 British soldiers, Hessians and Loyalists to sail from New York City and capture Savannah, capital city of Georgia as a base for future operations in the southern colonies. After Savannah fell in December 1778, British and Patriot forces conducted a series of moves and counter moves resulting in the battles of Kettle Creek, Brier Creek and Stonor Ferry. By September 1779 Admiral Charles-Henri d'Estaing brought his French fleet and army from the Caribbean to remove the British forces at Savannah following numerous appeals from the Colonials. This first combined allied effort which was only expected to last no more than 10 days evolved into a prolonged siege, which culminated into an all-out assault on the British fortified positions protecting Savannah. The attack will go down as one of the most costly defeats suffered by the French and patriots during the entire war.
