To mark this years centenary commemorations of the formation of the Swedish Air Force, this model set charts the development of the force from one which purchased overseas aircraft types, to one of the most powerful air forces in the world. By the start of the Second World War, the Swedish Air Force consisted of 180 aircraft of different types, but mainly purchased from countries such as Britain, the US, Germany, and Italy.

Their first indigenous design was introduced in 1942, but in order to defend their neutrality, they continued strengthening with aircraft produced overseas. This continued into the jet age, however, Sweden was working hard to develop their own jet fighters, and when the most significant came, it was something very special: the SAAB J35 Draken supersonic interceptor.

Since then, Sweden has continued to produce impressive new aircraft, often operating them from dispersed sites using public roads as runways, with SAAB cars sharing the road with SAAB fighters.

As Britain prepared to mark the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain in 2015, an aircraft unveiling at RAF Coningsby captured the imagination of enthusiasts and modellers alike, as one of the RAFs cutting-edge Eurofighter Typhoon FGR.4 jets had a smart new paint scheme, which took its inspiration from a famous Fighter Command aircraft from 1940.

This high-tech multi-role jet aircraft had been painted in a scheme similar to that worn by the Hawker Hurricane Mk.I flown by Flight Lieutenant James Brindley Nicolson on 16th August 1940, the day on which his actions in combat earned him a Victoria Cross - the only VC awarded to a Fighter Command pilot during the entire war.

Nicolsons RAF No.249 Squadron Hurricane was on fire after being attacked by a Messerschmitt Bf 109, however, he stayed in the aircraft to press home an attack against a Bf 110 Destroyer which passed in front of his stricken fighter, despite flames licking around him. Nicholson later took to his parachute and landed safely, returning to combat flying after a period of treatment and recouperation.

Presenting the usually grey Eurofighter Typhoon in Battle of Britain era camouflage was a masterstroke by the RAF, and throughout the summer display season, she became the most popular aircraft in Royal Air Force inventory. Enthusiasts even referred to her as GINA, after the code letters carried on the aircrafts fuselage, and she will always be remembered as one of the RAFs best looking Typhoon jets.

When it comes to specially presented RAF Typhoon FGR.4 display aircraft of the past 10 years, the one which served the longest on the UK airshow circuit, and was unquestionably the most patriotic in appearance was ZJ914.

Resplendent in a smart all-over black Aggressor scheme, the aircraft also benefited from union flag style markings and an RAF roundel on each side of its tail, and no matter what the weather, when this aircraft displayed with afterburners engaged, it was an aviation sight to behold.

The scheme was similar to the one worn by the RAF Shorts Tucano T.1 display during the 2008 season, which also had a black airframe, with red, white and blue detailing to mark the 90th anniversary of the Royal Air Force. Two Tucanos were presented in this manner: ZF210 and ZE338, with one serving as a reserve should the assigned display aircraft become unserviceable.

The Tucano was the RAFs basic training aircraft for 30 years, prior to its service withdrawal in 2019. In the continuation of a now popular tradition, Typhoon ZJ914 also inherited a name by which all enthusiasts referred to her, as she became Blackjack. The aircraft wore this popular scheme for three full display seasons and even throughout the early months of display work up to the 2024 airshow season.

So, is it any wonder that Blackjack became one of the most popular aircraft to have represented the Royal Air Force during the 21st century? 'Blackjack' and the aircraft which inspired her look are now both ready to build in 1:72 scale - a great project for modellers startimg to find their feet in this hobby.

In advance of the nations commemoration events to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day in summer 2024, Britains army of aviation enthusiasts found themselves regularly checking the social media feeds of the Royal Air Force Typhoon Display Team, just in case they made any interesting announcements.

Sure enough, on a damp Monday in May, the doors of one of the Hardened Aircraft Shelters at RAF Coningsby opened to reveal a beautifully presented Eurofighter Typhoon, resplendent in 1944 camouflage and identification markings.

The impressive scheme applied to Typhoon FGR.4 ZJ913 took inspiration from the RAF No.257 (Burma) Squadron Hawker Typhoon Mk.Ib flown by Pilot Officer Denzil Jenkins in support of the D-Day landings on 6th June 1944, complete with the black and white identification markings which were such a distinctive feature of Allied aircraft operating over Normandy on D-Day.

This was a masterstroke by the RAF PR team, and this aircraft thrilled millions of people throughout the airshow season which followed, at commemorative events in both the UK and France, and whilst undertaking a successful tour of Canada.

Enthusiasts were quick to give this distinctive aircraft a name of its own, and from that very first day at Coningsby, she was referred to as Moggy, another play on the squadron codes the aircraft wore, using the roundel as an O.

Sadly, this attractive aircraft only served a single season as the RAF display Typhoon, but will be fondly remembered as one of the most popular RAF aircraft of the post-war era.

'Moggy' can now take pride of place on your workbench, along with the aircraft that inspired her look, with both aircraft model kits in 1:72 scale.

Avro Shackleton AEW.2/MR.2 68,50 €

Tracing its lineage back to the famous Lancaster of the Second World War, the Avro Shackleton was a long-range maritime patrol aircraft used primarily for anti-submarine operations, but it was also required to perform several other roles.

Entering RAF service in 1951, the majority of Shackletons were powered by the mighty Rolls Royce Griffon engine, and became the last aircraft in the illustrious line of four-engined propeller-powered bomber/strike aircraft to see service with the Royal Air Force.

The decision to scrap HMS Ark Royal left the Royal Navy concerned that their ships would lose vital airborne early warning cover, however, a proposal to fit the radar units from Ark Royals former AEW Fairey Gannets to RAF Avro Shackletons allayed those fears.

Twelve Shackleton airframes were converted to AEW Mk.2 standard and operated in the colours of No.8 Squadron at RAF Lossiemouth, where they remained until the unit finally disbanded in 1991.

One of the worlds first classic jet fighters, the F-86 Sabre was a true pilots aeroplane, featuring beautifully harmonised controls and six reliable 0.50cal M3 Browning machine guns, in the days prior to rocket armament becoming the norm.

An aircraft which may look relatively innocuous but was actually an effective airborne warrior, the Douglas SBD Dauntless was the scourge of the Imperial Japanese Navy and the aircraft which allowed the US Navy to strike back after the Pearl Harbor attack.

History

From 1944, the de Havilland Mosquito B.XVI was delivered to front line squadrons. The B.XVI was a development of the earlier B.IX variant, but a new pressurised cabin had been incorporated so the aircraft could operate at high altitude.

Although it was unarmed, the B.XVI could carry a 3,000Ib bomb load. Not long after the start of B.XVI production, modifications were incorporated on the production line to allow a 4,000Ib Cookie or blockbuster bomb to be carried internally, a weapon which possessed devastating destructive capability.

Combining the power of these fearsome weapons with the legendary speed and bombing accuracy associated with Mosquito operations allowed Bomber Command to keep the pressure on the enemy throughout the latter stages of WWII.

By this time, with its first test flight on 12 March 1945, the last bomber version of the Mosquito, B.35, was at an advanced stage of development. Powered by the Merlin 113/114 engine, the war ended before the B.35 entered service. However, it had a long career with the post-war RAF, serving operationally until early 1954.

When the RAFs new jet-powered replacement for the Mosquito, the English Electric Canberra was introduced to service in May 1951, the Mosquito B.35 was relegated from frontline operations and many B.35s continued to operate in secondary roles after conversion to target tugs.

These conversions were undertaken by Northamptonshire-based Brooklands Aviation Ltd and called TT.35s. These remained in service with Civilian Anti Aircraft Cooperation Units (CAACU) until the last one was retired in May 1963. The TT.35s target-towing system consisted of a wind-driven ML Type G winch with 6,000ft of non-twisting steel cable towing a fabric target drogue.

Restricted by the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, the German Kriegsmarine exploited a loophole by designing a fleet of fast, wooden-hulled attack craft they referred to as Schnellboots.
