As the world erupted into conflict in September 1939, the Royal Air Force had more Bristol Blenheims in service than any other aircraft type and it saw extensive service during the savage air battles. Used mainly in the light bomber role, around 200 Blenheims were also modified for use as long range fighter/night-fighters, with these aircraft being equipped with ventral packs mounted on their undersides, housing four forward-firing 0.303 machine guns.

Production of these bespoke components, along with their mounting frames, was sub-contracted to the workshops of Southern Railway at their Ashford site in Kent.

One of the most instantly recognisable aircraft from the Second World War era, the Junkers Ju-87 Stuka was an inverted gull-winged dive-bomber and ground-attack aircraft which made its first flight in 1935.

With a two-man crew, up to four machine guns and the ability to carry 1800kg of bombs, the Stuka was rather a large aeroplane to be powered by a single V-12 Junkers Jumo engine, particularly when considering it weighed over four tonnes.

Of course, our model kit version is far smaller in 1:48 scale, so it should fit on your workbench perfectly.

When Britain was standing alone against the might of the all-conquering German war machine, they needed heroes to steel the nation to its duty - men like Douglas Bader. Joining the Royal Air Force in 1928, Bader was a gifted sportsman with the reputation of a thrill seeker. However, he struggled with the academic side of life at Cranwell.

Commissioned in July 1930, he was posted to No.23 Squadron at Kenley to fly the Gloster Gamecock, and later, the Bristol Bulldog, one of the most advanced fighting aeroplanes in the world at that time. Although Baders wartime exploits and aerial victories were linked with both the Spitfire and Hurricane, the aircraft which defined him as an airman was the Bulldog biplane.

During an impromptu flying visit to the Reading Aero Club on 14th December 1931, and with official instructions not to perform low altitude aerobatics in the Bulldog still ringing in his ears, Bader recklessly ignored those instructions after being challenged by fellow pilots.

Having performed a series of spectacular manoeuvres and with his aircraft just a few feet above the ground, the wingtip of his fighter struck the ground during a slow roll manoeuvre and cartwheeled across the airfield, inflicting catastrophic injuries on the pilot, to the horror of those watching.

Despite suffering the amputation of both legs, Bader was determined to fly for the Royal Air Force again, and was given his chance following the outbreak of the Second World War. He flew both the Spitfire and Hurricane operationally, and was credited with 22 aerial victories, before being forced to bail out of his Spitfire over France, becoming a POW on 9th August 1941.

Douglas Baders story of courage and determination inspired Britain in her darkest hours, and when a victory flypast took place over London at the end of the war, it was hero Bader who led the formation in a Spitfire.

One of the most significant aircraft of the post-war era, even though Britains Westland Helicopters eventually produced well over 300 of the American Sea Kings, only a small number of these machines became some of the highest profile aircraft to ever serve within Britains armed forces. The robust and stable Sea King was an ideal aircraft with which to undertake the specialist Search & Rescue role across the UK, and Westland developed a number of Sea Kings specifically for this task.

Designated HAR.3 and produced for the Royal Air Force, Search & Rescue Sea Kings were fitted with highly advanced search and navigation equipment and were capable of operating in this demanding role in all weather and at any time, night or day.

Always on station in times of need, these yellow Sea Kings became some of the most famous and best loved aircraft in Britains skies, with crews never in any doubt as to the affection in which they and their aircraft were held by the public.

Westland Lysander Mk.III "Special Duties" 43,95 €

In 1941, the RAF issued a requirement for around 40 of their Westland Lysander communications aircraft to undergo modification in support of a new clandestine role, which they described as Special Duties. The aircraft had defensive armament removed and have their range increased by adding a larger oil tank internally, and an external 150 gallon fuel tank under the fuselage.

The gunners compartment was also modified by adding a rear-sliding single piece canopy, and room to accommodate up to three people inside. A robust ladder was fixed to the port-side fuselage to allow passengers to quickly enter and exit the aircraft when they were engaged in this new Spy Taxi role.

Operating under cover of darkness and with the support of the French Resistance, specialist crews bravely flew these unarmed aircraft across the English Channel at night, delivering and extracting agents at great personal risk to all involved, operations which proved crucial to the eventual outcome of the Second World War.

When it comes to operating distinctive aeroplanes at sea, the Royal Navy have had more than their fair share of aircraft types, but perhaps the strangest looking (and sounding) was the Fairey Gannet.

During the summer of 1950, a Gannet became the first turboprop-powered aircraft in the world to land on the deck of an aircraft carrier, and production deliveries of the most heavily produced AS.1 variant of the aircraft began in 1954.

The Gannet also saw service with the navies of Australia, West Germany and Indonesia, but it was the Royal Navy who were the last to retire in service examples of this rugged naval aircraft type.

When it comes to significant British aircraft of the post Second World War era, few have had anything like the impact of the English Electric Lightning. It was a supersonic sensation which was originally introduced to protect Britains V-Bomber airfields against Soviet bomber attack. The ultimate incarnation of this flying hot-rod was the Lightning F.6, an aircraft which took all the performance of its predecessors, and presented it with even more speed, greater range, and better handling.

This magnificent aircraft posted a stellar 28-year career with the Royal Air Force, through some of the most volatile times in world history. The F.6 variant saw the return of guns to the Lightning, following their omission on the F.3 which preceded it, armament which complemented a pair of Red Top air-to-air missiles and was welcomed by serving RAF pilots.

Although incredible speed was always something associated with the Lightning, pilots were always of the opinion that the aircraft was more than just a point defender, and was easily capable of dogfighting, as long as its cannon armament was retained.

History

A gleaming silver steed to be flown by the most capable and intrepid young men Britain could call upon, the Bristol Bulldog was one of the most important British aircraft of the inter-war period, when powerful biplane fighters unquestionably ruled the skies.

Initially developed as a private venture by Bristol Aeroplane Company, the Bulldog was the brainchild of accomplished aircraft designer Frank Barnwell, the man behind the successful Bristol F.2B Fighter of the Great War. It was a light, all-metal, fabric-covered fighter, powered by a 440hp Bristol Jupiter engine.

The Bulldog was armed with a pair of forward-firing Vickers 0.303 in machine guns mounted either side of the cockpit, but ultimately never fired its guns in anger during a relatively short seven-year period serving with Fighter Command.

Although it was the most capable fighter of the day, the Bulldog was more closely associated with challenging formation flying and spectacular aerobatics, with the Royal Air Force thrilling huge crowds at airshows and pageants around the country, as they demonstrated the effectiveness of a modernising air force.

In May 1965, the Defence Ministries of France and the UK agreed on a joint programme to develop a supersonic trainer and tactical strike aircraft. France had already decided upon the Breguet 1221 design and this, together with the Rolls-Royce/Turbomeca Adour engine became the basis of the Jaguar. Design leadership was with both Brequet Aviation and the British Aircraft Corporation, so the companies established the joint company SEPECAT to coordinate production.

The first two-seat Jaguar trainer flew in September 1968 and the first single-seater in March 1969. Production GR.1 aircraft entered RAF service with 54 sqn in March 1974. The French Air Force phased the type into service earlier in June 1973. The GR.1 for the RAF was a single-seat all-weather strike and ground attack fighter equipped with NAVWASS (navigating and weapons aiming sub-system) enabling it to attack without using radars.

Based mostly in Germany, RAF Jaguars were used for rapid deployment and regional reinforcement, and others flew in the tactical nuclear strike role carrying the WE177 bomb. Upgraded GR.1A Jaguars flew successfully in the 1990 Gulf War, where 12 aircraft flew 612 combat sorties without loss. The final Jaguars were retired from RAF service in April 2007.

Arguably the most unconventional Fairey-designed aircraft to enter full production, the Gannet was developed to meet a 1945 Royal Navy requirement for an advanced carrier-based turboprop-powered anti-submarine hunter-killer.

Intended to counter the recent expansion of the Soviet submarine fleet at the start of the Cold War era, the Gannet was equipped with the last electronic detection equipment and if an enemy submarine was detected, it could be marked, tracked and attacked using bombs, depth charges, rockets and air-launched acoustic torpedoes. It was a highly effective anti-submarine aircraft, able to attack submarines on the surface or submerged.

One feature of the Gannet that gave it a unique appearance was its innovative Armstrong Siddeley Double Mamba powerplant. This arrangement saw two gas turbine engines mounted side by side, sharing a common gearbox, but operating independently, each engine driving its own coaxially mounted, contra-rotating propeller. Another unique feature was the bi-folding wing system, designed to allow this large aircraft to be stored aboard relatively small aircraft carriers.

A groundbreaking helicopter design, the Westland Lynx was developed as the potential replacement for several rotary types in British service during the 1970s, and produced in collaboration with French manufacturer Sud Aviation.

From the prototype's maiden flight, it was clear this was a very special aircraft. It set many helicopter speed records and became famous for its incredible agility.

With variants produced for the British Army and the Royal Navy, the Lynx was used in many roles and remained in service for 40 years.

As a thoroughbred fighting aeroplane, the basic airframe of the Supermarine Spitfire was capable of accepting successive modifications which saw this incredible aircraft remain in production throughout the entire Second World War. That adaptability allowed the Spitfire to be upgraded to meet the challenge posed by the latest Luftwaffe fighters, one which saw the Spitfire Mk.IX hurriedly introduced during the summer of 1942 to combat the dominance of the fearsome Focke Wulf FW190 Butcher Bird. This variant of the Spitfire has since been described as potentially the most effective stop-gap fighter in the history of military aviation.

Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I 33,95 €

The Supermarine Spitfire is arguably the most famous and beautiful fighter aircraft ever to grace the skies. First flying in 1936, R.J. Mitchells masterpiece was the interceptor of choice for Fighter Command by 1940, and the envy of many of the worlds air arms. Powered by the equally famous Rolls Royce Merlin V12, the Spitfire was capable of speeds of over 360mph and had exceptional manoeuvrability.

The Spitfire was an excellent dog-fighter, able to turn on the inside of an opponent to great effect during the struggles over southern England and the English Channel during the Battle of Britain. The Spitfire Mark I has come to be seen as a symbol of The Few, vital to the defence of the United Kingdom against the previously all-conquering Luftwaffe. Supermarine Spitfire PR.XIX 33,95 €

The PR.XIX was the final photo reconnaissance version of the Spitfire to see active RAF service. Produced by mating features of the Mk.XI Spitfire to the powerful Griffon engine of the XIV, the PR.XIX was one of the fastest and, some say, best-looking of all Spitfire variants.

Due to its role as a reconnaissance machine, it featured no armament, relying upon its high top speed to evade potential enemies. After the war, the PR.XIX served in the Far East, operating over Hainan Island and performing the RAFs last ever operational sortie by a Spitfire over Malaya on 10th June 1957.
