Raiders and traders, with their highly developed seafaring skills, were able to navigate all the seas and major rivers of Western Europe, greatly influencing the destinies of several nations, such as Great Britain and France, during what became known as The Viking Era.

Some historians consider that this era started in 793, with the raid on the Lindisfarne Abbey in Northumberland. The event sent shockwaves through Christendom and is recorded in many contemporary chronicles that offer a really dark testimony:

Never before has such terror appeared in Britain as we have now suffered from a pagan race The heathens poured out the blood of saints around the altar, and trampled on the bodies of saints in the temple of God, like dung in the streets. wrote Alcuin of York about the event. He was a scholar in the court of Emperor Charlemagne

Our miniature portrays a Viking chief after the raid, getting ready to inspect some loot.

Note: This is a resin miniature kit that requires assembly and painting.

His teachings inspired a huge movement in the XV century Bohemia, the Hussites, which initially had a religious nature but evolved into a full-fledged political faction.

The two main events that marked that evolution were the execution of Jan Hus in 1415, accused of heresy, and the death of the Catholic King Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia a few years later in 1419. There was already unrest among the Hussites when Wenceslas successor, his brother Sigismund of Luxembourg, received permission from the Pope to launch a crusade against them.

The Hussites were mainly an army composed of militia, and many of them were equipped with farming tools, but they made a really imaginative use of their scarce resources to fight against the Bohemian troops. In the early engagements of the battles of the Hussite Wars, they developed their famous defensive technique for fighting in wagons, combining that protection with the power of the earlier firearms that were gradually appearing on the European battlefields of the era. In the Battle of Sudom??, they managed to repulse a decisive surprise assault by the enemys heavy cavalry using that technique.

Our miniature represents one of the many Central European mercenaries that fought during that troubled period, and can be painted to represent a member of any of the factions of the conflict.

It was a clash between the desires of Prussian-led unification of Germany on one side, and the fears of France about the consequences of the emergence of a new powerful expansionist empire right at its doorsteps.

The German forces obtained a decisive victory over the French, as they had better training and leadership. Also, their equipment was more modern and they made better use in warfare of three relatively new assets available: railroads, telegraph and modern artillery.

As the German Army was composed of troops from the different states of the Confederation, there was a wide variety of uniforms and insignia.

Our figure, a classic Elite Miniaturas reference sculpted by Stefano Cannone, portrays a drummer from a Bavarian line infantry regiment, dressed in the particular cornflower blue uniform of the troops of this German State.

Almost from the beginning, the Confederacy had serious trouble equipping its soldiers properly and coherently, and they tried to compensate for their lack of equipment and supplies with great tenacity and courage.

On the other hand, officers were a different story. Normally, their uniforms were privately purchased and tailored, so following the regulations was a bit easier.

This officer carries a regulation kepi and greatcoat over his uniform, along with riding boots and other elements, like the binoculars case and sabre, that were typical of his rank.

After the fall of Acre in 1291, the Kingdom of Jerusalem relocated to Cyprus, and Pope Clement V awarded the Templars the formal ownership of this island, trying to maintain at least a small foothold in the area.

The island had a small port and a castle, and its garrison consisted of a bit more than a hundred knights with an additional detachment of archers and servants, under the command of Maréchal Barthélemy de Quincy.

Since the siege of Acre, the Mamluks had started to take control of Syria, and they were not going to leave the strategic enclave in the hands of the Crusaders. They landed on the island with a highly superior force and laid siege to the fortification. After a lengthy fight, the Templars surrendered in exchange for a promise of safe passage, which was ultimately broken by the Mamluks. The bowmen and servants were executed, and the knights were sent to Cairo as captives.

Our figure depicts a member of a militant order on the eve of the XIV century, and can be used to portray any similar subject of choice.

The death of the childless King Edward the Confessor put Harold Godwinson, the new Anglo-Saxon king on the throne, but started a struggle among some claimants to the English throne, among them Harald Hardrada, king of Norway, and William, Duke of Normandy. So, their armies set sail to fight for their leaders rights to be the next king of England.

The king of Norway was killed at the Battle of Stamford Bridge battle so the destiny of the realm would be decided in a fierce crucial battle between the Saxons and the Normans at Hastings. At the end of the day, Duke William, soon to be known as "the Conqueror", was victorious and a new era started for England.

The Normans were descendants of Viking raiders who settled in the actual area of Normandy, France. They were fierce warriors and their army was a mixed ensemble of infantrymen, archers and cavalry.

Our figure would be a typical Norman warrior, equipped with a gambeson, sword and a kite shield.

From their humble origins, they evolved to become one of the most important Christian military orders.

After militarising the order in the first half of the XII century, they became very active elements for the Christian kingdoms during the Crusades until the siege of Acre in 1291. After the Muslim conquest of the Holy Land, they moved their base of operations, first to Cyprus, then to the Isle of Rhodes, which they ruled until they further relocated again to Malta.

Our miniature depicts one of these monk-warriors at the end of the XIII century and can be painted as a member of any other militant order or as a generic Knight of Outremer.

Subsequently, the cuirassiers participated in all major campaigns of the period, including the Franco-Prussian War.

In this conflict, the cavalrymen of the 8th and 9th cuirassier regiments lived through a dramatic situation during the Battle of Wörth in 1870. While chasing some Prussian troops in a counterattack in the nearby village of Morsbronn, 700 men ended up trapped inside the village and were massacred by close range fire in a matter of minutes. This massive casualty episode is remembered as one of the most tragic moments of the history of French Cavalry.

They inhabited the area equivalent to actual England and developed a culture that was the result of them mixing with the previous Romano-British people. The end of their hegemony was marked by the Danish invasions and, in special, the Norman conquest of the Island in 1066.

During the early days, the Anglo-Saxons came to Britain in migration waves and settled in diverse territories, sometimes by force, sometimes through defense agreements with the previous inhabitants. That led to a fragmentation and many small kingdoms were created. Among these kingdoms, Mercia gained such military superiority over the others that even the Frankish Emperor Charlemagne recognized one of their leaders, Offa, as a king.

Our miniature carries the weapons and equipment that a Mercian warrior could have used, with a mixture of Romano-British and Nordic elements.

By the time of Batu Khans ascension to power, it was already fragmented into large kingdoms. The lands of the Golden Horde were situated in the northwestern corner of the empire and stretched from Siberia and Central Asia to Eastern Europe.

The peak of the power of this kingdom occurred in 1380 under Tokhtamysh Khan, the last great ruler of the horde who briefly unified all its territories under his command. However, the invasion of Timur, founder of the Timurid Empire, in 1396, threw the whole region into chaos and fragmentation into smaller khanates whose influence declined steadily.

The irruption of the Mongols towards the West changed history radically. This mighty force of skilled riders and mounted archers marked a milestone in Medieval warfare.

Their colorful attires and their martial expertise made them well known in the battlefields of the continent, in the particularly tumultuous late XV and early XVI centuries.

One of those mercenary troops was the Black Band, a military contingent that served at the orders of Francis I, the king of France. They fought in several battles and campaigns during the early XVI century, including the famous defeat of the French Army at the Battle of Pavia, in 1525, where they were virtually annihilated by the Imperial-Spanish coalition troops, which also captured the French king that same day.

Along the famous dopplesöldners, the men who carried the emblematic two-handed sword called Zweihänder, the landsknechts also included formations of pikemen, halberdiers, and the increasingly important arquebusiers.

The miniature portrays one of these landsknecht arquebusiers, dressed in the characteristic black and red attire of the Black Band. It can be painted in a wide variety of color combinations to represent any kind of other landsknechts.

Also, the first continental army suffered hard from the lack of supplies and trained officers. In spite of this, they grew in confidence and efficiency as the conflict developed and became quite an effective army in the best tradition of European standards.

Our bust depicts a generic Continental Infantryman that can be painted in a big array of combinations depending on the regiment of choice. For this version, we have chosen the 1st Pennsylvania regiment that sports the combination of blue uniforms with red facings that was assigned to these troops.

Despite some other important Great Plains tribes taking arms against the Federal Army on the Indian Wars, the Blackfoot decided not to intervene. This was mainly due to the precedent set by the famous Marias Massacre.

A young native called Owl Child killed the rancher Malcolm Clarke after a series of disputes. In response, a punitive expedition by the U. S. Army killed around 200 natives, mostly women, children and elderly men that didnt even belong to the same tribe of the native who initiated the chain of events.

Even if they decided not to participate in the wars, the federal victory over the other tribes and the posterior almost complete extinction of the buffalo, led them to a clear decline as their way of life quickly slipped away.

Among them, the Blood tribe or Kainai Nation is mainly distributed between Canada and the United States of America, and our miniature portrays a warrior with the particularly detailed attire they used to wear in that era.
