Officer - Scots Fusilier Guards - Crimea 1854 31,95 €

Along with the Coldstream and Grenadier Guards, the Scots Guards were part of the Guards brigade during the Crimea War. They were involved in the conflict from the early beginning in 1854.

During the engagement at Battle of the Alma River, the first wave of British and French assault units was repelled by the Russians and retreated in chaos and confusion, leaving the second wave, where the Guards brigade was included, exposed to the enemy.

The Scots Guards were the most forward unit of that contingent and, consequently, the first one to be attacked. They managed to hold the line and repel the Russian advance, forcing them to retreat to Sevastopol.

For their actions on that day, the Scots Guards earned four Victory Crosses and the Battle Honor "Alma", which holds a special significance to the regiment.

The Varangian Vikings migrated from Scandinavia, in particular from Sweden, to the southeastern European mainland. They settled in a wide area comprised of todays Belarus, Western Russia, and Ukraine. In this later and more southern area, they founded the medieval state of Kyiv.

They traveled along the Dnieper and the Volga towards the Black Sea, working as traders, mercenaries, and pirates, and it was just a matter of time before they clashed with the Byzantine Empire in the South, in what is known as the Rus-Byzantine Wars.

During this long period of conflict, which spanned until the early XII century, many Varangians ended up serving as mercenaries in the elite guard of the Byzantine emperor and converted to Orthodox Christianity. This eventually would lead to the Christianization of the Kyivan Rus.

The 17th Alabama was raised on August 1861 at Montgomery, and put under the command of Colonel Thomas H. Watts. Among other engagements, it participated in the battles of Shiloh, Bentonville, Peach Tree Creek, and Franklin, along with the Atlanta Campaign. When the regiment surrendered in 1865, very few men remained, having sustained dramatic losses during the conflict.

The most desirable thing for an Army is to furnish its soldiers with regular uniforms, but the Confederacy always had many problems achieving such things. The commanders of the Confederate Army preferred to have their men well-equipped and warm above all things. Because of that, the typical fashion of Johnny Reb was described as, "no two dressed alike". Those men wearing partly uniform and also civilian clothes were widespread, and were known as "Pards". When the men fought in long-period campaigns and didnt receive supplies on time, they survived with the generous donations of the Southern people in the form of great appeals and other initiatives done by the states and the Quartermaster Department. Different tones of grey, butternut, and a myriad of civilian clothes could be seen in the same unit at any given time.

This miniature is a classic portrayal of the quintessential Confederate soldier, long out of production, and now re-released in high-quality resin.

The Gallic Wars were a series of campaigns and confrontations in which the people of the Gaul fought against the Romans, in an attempt to resist their assimilation into the Empire. The climax of the conflict was the Siege of Alesia (September, 52 BC), in which the army of Julius Caesar finally defeated a confederation of Gallic tribes united under the leadership of Vercingetorix of the Arverni.

This was a brutal campaign for the Roman army, who had to fight against a well-organized enemy that was highly motivated to defend their homeland. The Gallic warriors were particularly fierce and well-equipped.

Our miniature portrays one of these warriors, with the typical Celtic design helmet that would later be adapted by the Romans themselves.

In Romania, he is regarded as a national hero; for some other cultures, the ruthless cruelty of his actions has earned him a criminal and sadistic reputation.

In any case, he was Voivode of Wallachia in a certainly fascinating period. During those times, the area was a hot spot, with constant fights and frictions among the local powers that tried to gain predominance, along with the incessant war against the Turks.

With such a background, there was a strong martial culture among the members of Wallachian nobility. Some of them even belonged to the Order of the Dragon, devoted to the fight against the Turks.

The initial push of the Crusades devastated the Holy Land, expelled the Muslim powers, and created diverse Christian kingdoms in the Middle East. The situation in those kingdoms was barely stable and they needed a continuous flow of warriors from Europe to guarantee their survival in front of the Arab armies pressure that were fighting to conquer back those territories.

At first, faith had been the main incentive for these warriors, fervent devotes that didnt hesitate to travel across half-world to fight for their beliefs. But later, a lot of members excluded from the European societies went there for the promise of a future that offered incredible opportunities to those who dare to grab them.

Our miniature can be painted in many different ways and heraldries, but the intricate decorations in the leather greaves make him a very suitable candidate to portray a knight from any of the different states from Medieval Italy.

In 1838, the British East India Company, fearing an increase of the Russian influence over Afghanistan that would threaten their interests in the area, started making plans for armed intervention. After a successful campaign where the British forces captured key points like the city of Kandahar or the fortress of Ghazni, they stopped in the outskirts of Kabul itself, but they decided not to capture it for diplomatic concerns.

The British Army set camp and relaxed after the victory but the Afghans, which were not too happy about the occupation, started to plan a revolt. At the end of 1841, the Afghan leader Akbar Khan started an armed insurrection against the invading forces.

After some initial success of the rebels against the clearly inferior and unprepared British forces, General Sir William Elphinstone, their commanding officer, tried to negotiate a settlement with the Afghans. They agreed on a retreat of all the British troops, along with their families, servants, and other civilian workers.

As soon as they left Kabul, leaving behind the powder reserves and most of the weaponry along the wounded and sick, the Afghans started the attack on the column. After some days of harassing and diverse acts of treachery by Akbar Khan that made things much worse, the British forces were either destroyed or heavily scattered.

The biggest surviving group was composed of 65 officers and soldiers from the 44th Regiment of Foot and spare members from other units. They made their last stand on a snowy hilltop near a village called Gandamak, resisting fiercely wave after wave of Afghans tribesmen until most were killed and the rest were captured. Among the survivors was a certain Captain Souter. He had rolled the regimental colors around his waist to preserve them from capture and the Afghans spared his life thinking that he was wearing a yellow sash like the ones that British generals wore.

The episode was a shock on the British Empire, that immediately started preparing a retaliation force that eventually destroyed Kabul.

Our miniature represents an officer from the small contingent of the Royal Horse Artillery present among the British forces on that fateful episode.

When Pope Urban II called his fellow faithful Christians to take the road to an armed pilgrimage to Jerusalem during the Council of Clermont, in 1095, he surely wasnt aware of the reach and historical consequences of his request. The First Crusade was, as its name indicates, the first of a series of conflicts that ravaged the Middle East for three centuries and shaped history in ways that we can even feel today.

Byzantine Emperor Alexis I Komnenos requested the help of the western Christian kingdoms for his fight against the Turkish Seljuks. When the Pope supported the request, it was met with popular enthusiasm and began the first part of the crusade, known as the Peoples Crusade. With scarce organization or planning, and led by a French priest, Peter the Hermit, they traveled to the East and were annihilated once they reached Anatolia in 1096.

In the meantime, a noblemen-led strong contingent of armies started to mobilize. Among their commanders, were men like Bohemund and Tancred of Tarento, and Robert II of Normandy, ambitious Norman leaders that saw the military expedition as a way to gain fame and fortune for themselves.

The campaign was a success that culminated in the conquest of the Holy City of Jerusalem, where Godfrey of Bouillion was established as a leader. Many of the soldiers that participated in the pilgrimage decided to stay in the newly conquered lands. The whole adventure in the lands of Outremer had just started.

Our miniature could have been one of those adventurers and soldiers that traveled East in one of the contingents of the Norman lords, maybe from the original lands in Northern France or from the Tarento kingdom in the South of Italy.

Nobody is really sure of the origin of the nickname Black Watch for the 42nd Highlanders regiment. Some believe it comes from the dark tones used in its tartan, some others trace the origin of the name to the Jacobite rebellions. In any case, this regiment is part of the history and traditions of the British Army in modern times, from the American Revolution to World War II.

Along with some other regiments of Scottish lineage, they were part of the Highland Brigade when serving in the Crimean War. Their most famous action was during the Battle of Alma.

Positioned on the right of the Brigade, it was with the order Forward the 42nd that the Commander, Sir Colin Campbell sent the Regiment up the heights to encounter the enemy who was driven back to their base in Sebastopol. There the Regiment shared in all the dangers and tribulations of work in the trenches before the town for nearly 18 months.

The First Anglo-Sikh War started when the British tried to secure the border of the imperial territories and the increasingly turbulent area of Punjab. Shortly after, the Sikh army crossed the River Sutlej into their territories, starting the conflict.

The East India Company Army forced them to retire and, after a few fierce engagements, they marched against the Sikhs as they retreated towards Aliwal.

The 16th Lancers, along with some Indian cavalry troops, made a dashing charge against the Sikh regiments that, trained in the European fashion, formed a square to defend themselves. Nevertheless, they managed to defeat them, even at the cost of many casualties.

Our figure is a classic from Elite Miniaturas that portrays a trooper of that regiment during the campaign.

Swiss mercenaries were a common sight throughout all Europe during the Renaissance period. These fierce men were highly demanded in an era in which the military commanders were more inclined to hire corps of veteran and highly trained professional soldiers than resorting to feudal-style levies of unskilled numbers.

They developed a unique style of fighting that involved deep columns of men, armed with their famous long pikes, supported by halberdiers and skirmishers. Until the arrival of the handguns to the European battlefields, any army incorporating enough units of Swiss infantry was considered impossible to beat.

Our figure depicts a halberdier dressed in the black and yellow characteristic from the canton of Uri.

The landsknechts were German mercenaries that had a formidable reputation during the times of the early modern Europe. Their colorful attires and their martial expertise made them well known in the battlefields of the continent, in the particularly tumultuous late XV and early XVI centuries.

One of those mercenary troops was the Black Band, a military contingent that served at the orders of Francis I, the king of France. They fought in several battles and campaigns during the early XVI century, including the famous defeat of the French Army at the Battle of Pavia, in 1525, where they were virtually annihilated by the Imperial-Spanish coalition troops, which also captured the French king that same day.

Characteristic among the landsknechts were the dopplesöldners, a special type of troops that carried the famous two-handed sword called Zweihänder. This long sword was used to break formations of pikemen, as it was strong enough to break the points of the pikes. For that kind of dangerous job, these soldiers received double pay than the average soldier. That particular thing is also the origin of their name.

The miniature portrays one of these soldiers, dressed in the characteristic black and red attire of the Black Band. It can be painted in a wide variety of color combinations to represent any kind of other landsknechts.

This classic from miniatures history was released in the late 90s by Elite Miniaturas and the original boxart was painted by Mike Blank himself.
