To visually emphasize his desire for revenge, he had his soldiers dressed entirely in black, with their shakos decorated with a white skull and crossbones. In June 1809, the Brunswick corps invaded Saxony together with 7,500 Austrians. After the Austrian defeat at Wagram, Frederick William marched with his corps into the newly founded Kingdom of Westphalia, where he wreaked havoc and defeated the enemy several times. When the duke was surrounded by overwhelming forces, he fought his way out and was evacuated by the British fleet from Elsfleth. After the corps had been landed at Yarmouth and Grimsby, it entered British service on August 14. From then on, the Brunswick Corps, consisting of infantry, light infantry, and hussars, fought with the British army on the Iberian Peninsula.
