These memoirs were written in 1919 but never published. Following the outbreak of war in 1914, Bagnold joined the Royal Engineers, completed his training at Woolwich and Chatham, and arrived in France as a young officer in July 1915. Bagnolds unitthe 83rd Field Company, attached to the 20th Divisionwas stationed near Laventie, France, from October 1915 to January 1916; it is here that he begins recounting his experiences at the front. As a sapper officer, he was typically quartered a few miles behind the front line, moving forward each night to work in the trenches and No Mans Land. In February 1916, Bagnold and his men relocated to Ypres, but in July 1916, they marched south to the Somme. The four chapters describing his experiences on the Somme form the heart of the memoirs. While Bagnold was initially impressed by the sheer scale of the undertaking and hopeful for success, his perspective shifted; as the massive offensive dragged on, he increasingly grasped the impossibility of a decisive victory. Many of Bagnolds observations are vivid and compelling, often drawing connections to broader themes. What did the first tanks look like, and how effective were they? What does it feel like to put on a gas mask or inhale poison gas? What did frontline soldiers think of the General Staff? What was daily life like for the sappers? The narrative brings us closer to all of this. *A Sapper Officers War* concludes amidst the fierce fighting at Passchendaele. The abrupt nature of this ending likely reflects the unique and definitive experience of many soldiers.

In this volume, military historian and former intelligence officer Anthony Tucker-Jones recounts how Churchills formative yearsmarked by a thirst for adventure, ambition, and unwavering self-confidenceshaped the warlord he would eventually become. Drawing on a rich collection of rare photographs, archival materials, and striking images, Tucker-Jones traces Churchills transformation: from rebellious schoolboy to cavalry officer, from daring war correspondent to rising political force. Each chapter brings to life the campaigns and conflicts that shaped Churchills worldview: Indias North-West Frontier, the deserts of the Sudan, the battlefields of the Boer War, and the corridors of the Admiralty, where he first experienced the weight of responsibility. These pivotal moments laid the foundation for the strategic instinct, resilience, and boldness that would later guide Britain through its darkest hour. Far more than a mere chronological pictorial record, this biography offers an intimate and multifaceted portrait. Tucker-Joness expert commentary provides essential background and insight, revealing the experiences that molded Churchills character, sharpened his instincts, and ignited the indomitable determination for which he is remembered to this day. Rich in atmosphere, deeply researched, and visually captivating, *The Making of a Warlord* deepens our understanding of Churchillnot only as a statesman but as a young man forged by conflict and driven by destiny.

Precisely for this reason, it has garnered significant public attention against the backdrop of contemporary crises. This volume presents the findings of a 2023 conferenceheld to mark the centenary of the French-Belgian occupation of the Rhenish-Westphalian industrial regionsupplemented by additional contributions. It examines transnational dimensions of politics, law, and violence; economic aspects; issues of migration and mobility; and local and regional concerns. Twenty-eight essays address perspectives previously neglected by scholarship and demonstrate the far-reaching impact of this conflict played out within the region. The volume thus contributes to the historiography of the Ruhr Crisis and to an understanding of the regional dimension of an international conflict.

But how did Britain develop its complex military strategy during these wars, and how were decisions made by those at the top?

Robin Prior examines the influence politicians had on military operations, in the first history to assess both world wars together. Drawing uniquely on both military and political archives and previously unexamined sources Prior explores the fraught relationships between civilian and military leaders: from Lloyd Georges remarkably interventionist stance on military tactics during the First World War to Churchills near-constant arguments with American leaders during the Second. Conquer We Must tells the complex story of this military decision-making, revealing how politicians attempted to control strategybut had little influence on how the army, navy, and air force actually fought.

The work is illustrated with original maps and documents issued to officers during the war, as well as regimental recordsall preserved within a family archive now housed in the Special Collections Department of the Leeds University Library. In 1914, at the age of 19 and on the verge of joining the family business, Douglas Crockatta pacifistvolunteered for medical service. In 1915, he served for nine months on the Western Front near Merville and Bac St. Maur; there, he recounts his experiences in the aftermath of the Second Battle of Ypres and during the Battle of Aubers Ridge. In 1916, deeply moved by the suffering he had witnessed as a medical orderly, he decided to become a "fighting soldier." He first underwent infantry training before transferring to the Machine Gun Corpsa step from one extreme to the other: from pacifism to the deployment of the "queen" of deadly weapons on the Western Front. Serving as a machine-gun officer, he was wounded in 1916 during the Battle of the Ancrethe final phase of the Battle of the Somme. Maps, letters, drawings, and photographs enable a comprehensive reconstruction of the engagement in which he sustained his injury. Following his recovery and further training back home, Douglas Crockatt returned to the front to fight in the Battle of Passchendaele; for his service, he was Mentioned in Dispatches and recommended for the Military Cross. The battles of Pilckem Ridge and Menin Road are reconstructed and described in detail. The original documentsthe regimental war diaries and mapsenable the reader to trace and relive the role of machine-gun units in the unfolding conflict down to the smallest detail. Following the conclusion of the fighting at Passchendaele and a brief leave at home with his fiancée, Douglas suffered a physical and mental breakdown in December 1917. He was discharged home as a disabled veterana circumstance that allowed him to deepen his relationship with his fiancée. He spent the first half of 1918 in the hospital; from July 1918 until Armistice Day, he served in an administrative capacity on the home front. Two weeks after the official declaration of peace, he married and returned to the bosom of his family and to his father's business. The book concludes with an examination of the impact Douglas Crockatts traumatic wartime experiences had on his personal development in the years that followed.

Janet Macdonalds new, detailed, and scholarly study demonstrates how the British Army managed this enormously complex organizational and logistical challenge during the First World War. She describes the personnel who carried out these tasksfrom the government and military leadership in London down to those who handled the material directly in the field. They bore responsibility for clothing, accommodation, medical care, transport, small arms, weaponry, and communicationsa vast logistical network that had evolved to supply millions of soldiers in active service. This meticulously researched account of a significant subjectone hitherto neglected by military historiansconstitutes essential reading and an important reference work for anyone interested in the modern British Army, particularly its organization and operational capabilities during the First World War.

This book was first published in 1936; Ralph Mottram served for the greater part of the war on the Western Frontinitially with the "Royal Norfolks" and later as a liaison officer to civilians in the forward areas of the BEF, primarily along the Franco-Belgian border. He undertook the preparatory work for the book in late 1935 and early 1936, although he had already revisited the old battlefields prior to that time. He covers vast stretches of the former war zone in France and Flanders, adopting the original approach of dividing the region into five sectionsa structure that roughly aligns with the sectors held by the five armies of the BEF. It is fascinating to view the modern-day Somme region and the "Salient" through the eyes of a gifted author and veteran of that campaigna man who penned his work just as the large-scale commemorative and construction projects of the Imperial War Graves Commission were nearing completion, and as the landscape, villages, and towns had already regained a certain measure of normality. Almost everything Mottram describesonly a few years before the region would once again be devastated by a world warremains recognizable today. What he brings to this deeply personal guidebook is the trained eye of a man who lived amidst the local population during the war years, yet remained an integral part of that colossal undertaking represented by the BEF. As a literary figure, he imbues the book with astute observations; in doing so, he consistently frames his descriptions within the context of the fighting soldiers he knew personally, while also drawing extensively upon the wealth of materialmemoirs and historical accountsthat had appeared in the years immediately following the war. This work is a true literary gem regarding the First World War.

For the first time in English, this book traces the activities through which the Polish diaspora supported the restoration of an independent Polandincluding the recruitment of an army of over 100,000 men that fought on the Western Front alongside the French. It covers the founding of the Polish White Cross, which provided medical and other aid to the troops, as well as the "Grey Samaritans," who served as social workers to bring relief to the newly independent nation. The book also follows the Polish army in France on its journey to post-war Poland, where it repelled a Bolshevik invasion; likewise, it tracks the relief organizations that followed the army to assist the civilian population, which was suffering from the ravages of war, population displacement, and widespread hunger and disease. No other ethnic diaspora came even close to matching the political pressure, military contribution, and humanitarian relief efforts provided by Polish communities living abroad throughout the world.

Without the support of New Jersey's industry, the United States' war effort might have failed. New Jersey's contributions ranged from artillery shells (Amatol) and fuses (Bloomfield) to grenades (Lyndhurst), gun carriages (Singer), aircraft engines (Duesenberg), Handley Page bombers (Elizabeth), and shipbuilding (New York Shipbuilding and ELCO). Over 140,000 New Jersey residents served in the war, and the state hosted 38 military bases at the end of the war, including Camp Dix. The troops from New Jersey included National Guard units that were activated and assigned to the 29th Division, training at Camp McClellan, Alabama, and National Army conscripts assigned to the 78th Division, also training at Camp Dix. Units of the 29th and 78th Infantry Divisions stationed in New Jersey fought in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. Women in New Jersey were also trained to serve in the Army Signal Corps. At the same time, women from the state volunteered with relief organizations such as the Red Cross and raised funds for the war effort. In the postwar years, over 160 monuments were erected throughout New Jersey to commemorate the war dead and honor World War I veterans, including several of E. M. Viquesney's famous "Spirit of the American Doughboy" statues. Mothers and widows from New Jersey made pilgrimages in the 1930s as part of the "Gold Star Mothers and Widows" pilgrimage to battlefields and cemeteries in France, such as the American Cemetery Maas-Argonne, and to Brookwood Cemetery in Great Britain to visit the graves of their loved ones. This book will reveal, for the first time, the full extent of New Jersey's crucial role in America's war effort during World War I and will shed light on prominent figures and their connections to New Jersey, such as Dr. Fred Albee, the father of bone transplantation; Cecil Dorrian, the first American female war correspondent in World War I; Amabel Roberts, the first American nurse from New Jersey to die in France during the war; and Lillian Marx, who danced and sang at wartime fundraisers in Newark.

The deployment of gas troops in the battles of Monte San Michele in 1916 and Caporetto in 1917 constitutes the central focus.

In peacetime, the medical corps did not form a cohesive unit, but rather a dispersed organization across all authorities and formations, organizationally part of the supply train. The relatively small number of personnel, united into a medical corps, were distributed among all regiments and battalions of the army, in addition to their duties in offices and garrison hospitals. Only at the outbreak of war were separate formations established: Each corps received three medical companies and twelve field hospitals for the recovery and initial treatment of the wounded. In 1917, an organizational change occurred, so that each division now had one medical company and two field hospitals, while the remaining units were transferred to the army troops. In view of the unexpectedly large influx of wounded, the total number of companies had to be tripled and the number of field hospitals doubled. To relieve the burden on the operational area of ??wounded soldiers, extensive hospital and transport facilities were established in the rear areas of the armies. Over 70 military hospital units operated a network of field hospitals, enabling the wounded and sick to receive medical care within the war zone. The seriously wounded, however, were transported home, where they were admitted to military reserve hospitals and community hospitals run by volunteer nurses. A total of 60 hospital trains, over 130 ambulance trains, and 90 community hospital trains were provided for these transports. The care and rehabilitation of the wounded was of paramount importance to the conduct of the war. Consequently, the medical corps grew into a considerable organization over the course of the war, encompassing approximately 25,000 physicians and 93,000 medical personnel.

Personalities such as Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, and Leopold, the first King of the Belgians, remain well-known to this day. However, the founder of the dual duchy, Ernst I, is often overshadowed by his famous relatives. This volume focuses on the ambitious duke who, in turbulent times, laid the foundations for his dynasty's rise through diplomatic skill and dynastic foresight. Alongside Ernst's work as a politician, builder, and collector, the book also illuminates the often overlooked figures behind the scenesthose who shaped the administration and collections. It offers a multifaceted look at the emergence of a dual state, its challenges, and the foundations of an "Ernestine Age" that transformed Coburg and Gotha into centers of European history and whose influence continues to shape the cultural landscapes on both sides of the Thuringian Forest.

In fact, it wasn't really a revolution at all. At least, it never entered the German historical consciousness as such. This is due to how it was passed down. Even the historical contemporaries of 1918/19 struggled to describe it as a "revolution" or even to recount it. The concept of revolution lacked majority support and inclusiveness among them. This book examines how they perceived, described, and narrated the events before their eyes, and how they grappled with the guiding principle of "revolution." It offers a new perspective and a new understanding of the founding history of the Weimar Republic.

This historical and iconographic study analyzes the appearance and spread of the edelweiss cap badge in its numerous variations and variants, initially in the Austro-Hungarian and later also in the German army, from August 1914 until the establishment of the Southwestern Front, which brought the Tyrolean military units back to defend their homeland.

Damals war sich kaum jemand des enormin Einsatzpotenzials dieser neuen Waffe bewusst; erst im Verlauf des Krieges wurden die umfassenden militärischen Fähigkeiten dieses technischen Mittels deutlich. According to the Krieg you can quickly find all the Lands of the Rückgrat with a fully-fledged Streitkraft. In this text there is a new uniform for the Luftwaffen, and the soldiers of the new specialization will be added to the uniform of the Armed Forces.

This collection of scholarly essays examines the various occupation regimes during the First World War. During the First World War, vast, densely populated regions of Central and Southern Europe were occupied. The volume analyzes the experiences of occupation from the perspectives of both the occupiers and the people in the occupied territories. The occupation led, among other things, to economic exploitation and mass emigration. The symposium will present various models of occupation policy, including the Russian occupation of Galicia and Bukovina, as well as the Austro-Hungarian and German occupations of Russian Poland, Ukraine, and Serbia. Just as today, more than 100 years ago Russian imperialism denied the national sovereignty of the Ukrainians.

But it also survives in objects: uniforms, dog tags, everyday items, and fragments that still bear the marks of their time and tell something of the men who once possessed them. Precisely because they have been through hell, bearing the marks of suffering, they become relics. Those who preserved and passed them on transformed them, in a sense, into sacred memoriesof the returning soldiers and the fallen. Testimonies of a transition, a final gift. This volume arose from an interest in these material memories and a desire to share them: to preserve them, to research them, and to tell their stories. Over time, the guardians of these fragments of memory often changed, but the intention always remained the same: to keep the past alive through something that still touches our hearts and minds.

Hundreds died in avalanches, and tens of thousands fell in battles of attrition, often for minimal territorial gains. Serious leadership errors in the initial phase and militarily senseless actions on both sides increased the losses of Italians, Austrians, and soldiers of other nations. The victory at Flitsch-Tolmeinthe Italian debacle of Caporettoand the advance to the Piave River represented a victory that ultimately only prolonged the demise of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. What remained was a devastated landscape, shattered families, and broken livesand the seeds of the Second World War. Gross leadership errors in the initial phase and militarily pointless actions on both sides increased the losses of Italians, Austrians, and soldiers of other nations. Historian Peter Schubert has been studying this front for over 50 years. He has written seven books and numerous articles on First World War topics, worked with Walther Schaumann, and in that capacity contributed to the development of the "Peace Trails," open-air museums, and the museum in Kötschach-Mauthen. His book on the fighting on the Isonzo was published in German and Italian, and his book on the Piave battles in German, Italian, and Slovenian. Most recently, he published two volumes as a guide to historically important sites along the "Peace Trails" in Italy, Austria, and Slovenia. In this book, Schubert presents a modern account of the events, drawing on sources and narratives from both sides. It is as well-researched as it is compelling, even though he deliberately avoids the heroic tales and legends that have often been used to obscure the truth.
