The years 1643-1715 were a defining period in the military, diplomatic and economic affairs of European states. Most of these years were characterised by conflicts between the major European powers and the Sun King's forces. This four-volume series is the first to provide a comprehensive account of the many facets of the French army and the wars it fought. It was an era in which the Sun King's army, and eventually all European armies, underwent extraordinarily significant changes, such as: the emergence of very large professional armies, increasingly centralised command systems, the training of officers and common soldiers, the introduction of compulsory military service, improvements in discipline and control, technical advances in weaponry that influenced battlefield tactics, significant advances in fortification, the introduction of uniforms, improved army logistics capable of supplying large armies, new financial practices that allowed the maintenance and payment of numerous military forces. The above factors and other elements led to many influences that played a major role in the geopolitical and geostrategic issues of the European states. They were largely determined by Louis XIV of France, practically from the assumption of his autocratic rule in 1661 until his death. As his army was initially the largest, most modern and most effective in Europe, he was successful to the point that neighbouring countries formed coalitions to stop him. However, the Sun King was a master of geostrategy, particularly in terms of the balance he was able to maintain with the Ottoman Empire, whose troops were always threatening the eastern borders of France's opponents. Thus, France's forces were always sufficient to keep the enemy mainly on the defensive. It was unthinkable that they would ever reach Paris. These and many other topics are covered in this four-volume work. Each volume essentially consists of two parts. The first part deals with the wars, campaigns and their context, the second consists of a detailed look at a specific part of the French army. The appendices contain specific aspects such as contemporary uniform lists or assessments of the Sun King's opposing and allied armies.

Many of the paintings produced also depict events from the war between 1568 and 1648 between the Kingdom of Spain and the Netherlands, which was striving for freedom and independence. However, a parallel pan-European conflict, the Thirty Years' War from 1618 to 1648, also provided many motifs for an entire generation of artists.
One important representative of this period was the Antwerp-born painter Pieter Snayers. His paintings in particular are extremely authentic in terms of military history. In the many siege scenes of cities and fortresses, Snayers depicts the views and ground plans of the time very accurately. His topographical and analytical approach was rarely surpassed by other artists. Even in his depictions of the rather rarer field battles, one searches in vain for major points of criticism. Snayers also shows us the lives of ordinary people in the armies of the time in a drastic and unembellished way. As viewers of his paintings, we are thus able to transport ourselves back to the real events of the time, far removed from widespread clichés. His paintings are scattered all over the world and adorn many well-known galleries. Based on his sometimes large-format paintings, this illustrated book tells part of the story of these conflicts with historical accuracy. All of these battles appear again and again in the lists of the great battles of world history, and there are reasons why they deserve a place there. But none of them ended the war in which they were fought. Born in 1698, he took part in the siege of Stralsund in 1715 as a page for Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Dessau at the age of 17, became an ensign in his regiment in the same year and served there until he became a captain. In Rheinsberg he was already a welcome guest at the Crown Prince's table and later won the King's friendship. After falling out with the "Old Dessauer", he went into Danish service in 1739 and returned to Prussia after Frederick's accession to the throne in 1740. De la Motte Fouqué becomes colonel and commander of the newly established Fusilier Regiment No. 37, in 1744 chief of the Fusilier Regiment No. 33 and at the same time commander of Glatz. Frederick II later moves his regiment there and promotes him to General of the Infantry in 1759. In 1760 he was attacked by three times the Austrian superiority at Landshut and was wounded and taken prisoner. Frederick compares him to Leonidas at Thermopylae (we present the story of his Silesian campaign in 1760 in Sodenstern's account, also reprinted). The Austrians, too, are aware of his military importance and do not exchange him until 1763. De la Motte Fouqué died in 1774. Frederick the Great was godfather to his grandson, the later poet and officer of the Volunteer Hunters with the Brandenburg Cuirassier Regiment 1813/14, Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué, who published this biography of his grandfather in 1824.
