25 Aug 1845 - 13 June 1886 Ludwig II Otto Friedrich Wilhelm von Wittelsbach, King of Bavaria (b. 25 August 1845 at Nymphenburg Palace, Nymphenburg, now Munich; 13 June 1886 in Lake Würm, now Lake Starnberg, near Berg Palace), descended from the House of Wittelsbach, was King of Bavaria from 10 March 1864 until his death.
Ludwig II made his mark in Bavarian history as a passionate builder of castles, especially Neuschwanstein, Herrenchiemsee and Linderhof; he is also known as the Fairytale King. His name is also inextricably linked with the generous sponsorship of Richard Wagner. It was under Ludwig's reign that the Kingdom of Bavaria entered the German Empire in 1870/71.
