The IONIC WWI and WWII French Tanks set includes 12 carefully selected acrylic paints designed to capture the characteristic camouflage of French vehicles colors used up until the early years of the Second World War.
From the mid-1930s onward, French regulations favored elaborate multi-tone camouflage patterns typically composed of three to five colors separated by thin black outlines. These schemes combined earthy browns, warm ochres, muted greens, and cool greys arranged in flowing organic shapes designed to break up the silhouette of the vehicle at close and medium range. Each color in the pattern was separated by a black outline. Far from factory-perfect, these patterns were often applied at unit level or depot workshops, resulting in noticeable variation between vehicles. This set embraces that variety by providing a balanced selection of core camouflage tones, including a deep green, a warm brown, a yellow-ochre, and a cool grey, all tuned to work harmoniously together.
Beyond the main camouflage colors, the set provides all the essential auxiliary tones needed to finish a vehicle convincingly. Tracks can be painted using a neutral brown as a base, followed by a dark metallic tone that is equally useful for tools and exposed steel parts. An almost-black brown is ideal for subtle chipping effects, while a dark red is included to simulate oxidized rust. Black serves for rubber elements, and the different brown shades are perfectly suited for painting stowage such as tarps, crates, and personal gear. The set is completed with Bone, a versatile universal color for lightening mixes, creating highlights, and enhancing contrast without the harshness of pure white. Although each of these colors can be used as-is to paint individual elements of the figure, they can also be combined to create new shades or tones, especially to add depth by playing with light and shadow.
