TAMIYA model making - "First in Quality Around the World"

TAMIYA is a world-renowned brand in the field of model building. In addition to particularly detailed plastic model kits, TAMIYA produces and sells high-quality RC models under the brand slogan "First in Quality Around the World" (own spelling). The company is the Japanese market leader for remote-controlled electric vehicles.
The headquarters of the traditional company are located in Shizuoka (Japan). In Germany, the products are distributed by the Simba Dickie Group.

TAMIYA Model Making - The History of Plastic Model Kits

In the 1950s, more and more plastic model kits from abroad entered the Japanese market, so that sales of TAMIYA wooden models steadily declined. TAMIYA therefore entered the plastic model market in 1959. The first plastic model was a replica of the famous Japanese battleship Yamato, which was built in the 1930s for the Imperial Japanese Navy.
However, TAMIYA could not offer the model at competitive prices: Sourcing the required injection moulding tools in Japan was too expensive.
Through the great commercial success of a small racing car produced with used injection moulds, the company finally managed to raise urgently needed capital for the purchase of new injection moulds.
The choice of the new model fell on the replica of the German battle tank Panther due to the many straight surfaces favourable for mould making. This model was produced in 1:35 scale because the model should be suitable for the use of a small electric motor with gearbox as well as the necessary batteries. The kit, unlike other competitor's kits, was distinguished by clear and easy to understand instructions which greatly simplified assembly and the model became a great success.
TAMIYA eventually established its own mould production facility in 1964 to solve the problem of expensive external sourcing, which was beset by supply problems.

TAMIYA - Packaging Design

With the introduction of slot cars in 1968, the packaging design changed fundamentally. Whereas up until then the packaging usually depicted complete scenes with the respective model, the models were now shown standing alone on a white background.
This type of presentation became a TAMIYA style element.

TAMIYA Modellbau - The plastic model kit range

TAMIYA model kits are characterised by extreme attention to detail. In contrast to the models of other competitors, TAMIYA, for example, depicted screws and nuts very early on in a lifelike manner as hexagonal, whereas other manufacturers depicted these screws and nuts merely by means of simple elevations.
It seems that TAMIYA has been and continues to be a role model for manufacturers such as Trumpeter when it comes to attention to detail.
The very extensive product range includes plastic model kits of cars, motorbikes, military vehicles, military figures, aircraft and ships.

TAMIYA Car Model Making

Car models and plastic model making are inextricably linked. In the TAMIYA range you will find classic models such as the Porsche 934 "Jägermeister", current vehicles such as the Porsche Carrera GT and cult vehicles such as the Honda S600.
Some car models are even available in 1:12 scale!

TAMIYA Motorcycle Model Making

As a Japanese manufacturer, TAMIYA has a very large range of plastic motorbike model kits.
Model building and motorbike enthusiasts can enjoy a wide range of models from Japanese manufacturers such as Kawasaki, Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha. But other brands such as Ducati can also be found in the range.
Some models are also available in 1:6 scale, for example the legendary Honda Monkey is offered in this scale. This guarantees great assembly fun.

TAMIYA Military Model Making

TAMIYA has a wide range of military vehicles and figures in 1/16th, 1/35th and 1/48th scale, enabling the construction of extensive dioramas.
In addition to current tank models such as the Leopard 2A6 "Ukraine", countless models from the world wars are also available. These include the legendary Mk IV, which was used in large numbers in the Battle of Cambrai in 1917, for example.

TAMIYA Aircraft Model Making

In addition to current models such as the Lockheed F35, you can also find the famous classics such as the Spitfire in a large selection in the range.

TAMIYA Ship Model Making

A very large selection of watercraft completes the TAMIYA model kit range. The Yamato must be mentioned in this context. The ship models are mainly offered in scales of 1:130 and 1:700.
From the simple set for beginners and tinkering-enthusiastic children to the 1000-piece professional kit, the large product selection ensures that really every fan gets his money's worth.
Similar to Revell and Airfix, TAMIYA has an entry-level line for small model making fans in its range: TAMIYA Dinosaur Diorama Series.
The dinosaur models are particularly easy to assemble. Children as well as adults will learn a lot of interesting facts about the dinos and will also receive many tips, for example on painting the models, through the detailed assembly instructions. The diorama sets such as the Brachiosaurus set are a real eye-catcher and a great gift for young budding model building fans.
